out of curiosity, what was your favourite picture from cycle 24 and has your opinion changed? back when i was reading your old commentary i realised that the post had gotten removed and i've been wondering what it was 😬
I think by the looks of things it was Sandra's Vulnerable photo (Week 7), and I do still love that shot, even if the whole hands touching them has a slight weirder vibe in 2022 than it did back then. Ultimately still not a huge fan of most of Cycle 24 photoshoots, so much wasted potential across the board.
I think Liberty's post-makeover video would now be a contender for number 1, but I actually think Shanice's Parachute shot might actually be my favourite. She is the only one for me who produced a good shot from that shoot, and I had been so excited about it all season from when I saw it in the promos. It was her shining moment on the show.

2. Where Did They Find These White Girls?
A lot of reality shows only cast a handful of non-white contestants, and those limited spots often go to "the bitch" or "the villain" archetypes, so credit to Top Model for going against the grain. In this cycle, it's people of color who make up the majority of the cast, and it's the white girls who come off the most crazy and unlikable. That's progress, maybe!
For example, there's Liberty, who's from a super white and conservative small town in Idaho. Despite acknowledging she has a lot to learn about the world and politics, she has no problem spouting her uninformed views. I'm really curious to know what was going on in her pretty little head when she asks several women of color if they think there might be pros to having Donald Trump as president in the upcoming years. Spoiler: The black women do not. Second spoiler: The black women are correct.
Undeterred, Liberty outs herself as being pro-Trump because of his business experience. She expects that he will provide "some career opportunities" and improve the economy "a little bit." Yeah, that doesn't seem nearly worth the trade off for having an unstable, incompetent, and corrupt bigot at the helm.
Also, she's essentially telling these fellow models that having a president who views them as subhuman is acceptable if the economy improves. Let's be clear, Liberty, that there's only one wealthy, egomaniacal reality show host who is providing you with a career opportunity right now and it's not the president - it's Tyra Banks!
Then we've got the white girl who's a little too comfortable claiming she's down with brown-skinned people. As Maggie explains to the panel, she grew up in lily white Maine until she went to college in Oakland, which is a lot more diverse. She now goes by the nickname "White Homegirl" since she glommed on to black culture as soon as she was introduced to it.
Oh boy. I don't doubt that some people of color jokingly called Maggie "white homegirl" in college, but if any of those people were really her friend, they would have told her not to embrace that monicker, as she looks completely foolish. Good for her for branching out, but she hasn't been "stripped" of her whiteness. I mean, with that dumb red hat, she still looks like your typical white hipster girl to me.
Finally, we have Liz, who is a mess and a half. She trips on her way into the room, which Tyra seems to love since it makes Liz "memorable," though she does inquire how inebriated Liz is. Liz insists she's sober.
Flashback to Tyra doing the same thing:
That's not to say LIz is sober sober like Tyra since she asks the judges to get drinks with her when the process is all over. Law still suspects she has a flask hiding in her cleavage. Nevertheless, he wants to create a brand just so she can be the face of it.
That's THIS face, mind you. Who wouldn't want to buy what she's selling?
Before the photoshoot, Liz compares herself to both Alice in Wonderland and Courtney Love, which would imply she's mixing psychedelics and downers. Her sobriety is further questioned during the photoshoot when Drew actually has to tell Liz, "Do some where you look beautiful instead of just drunk." She survives the next cut anyway.
Then, at the fashion show, Liz stomps like this, practically stumbling into the audience:
For whatever reason, Law still loves it. She survives the cut after that, as well.
But not before stirring up some confusing drama where she cries at Khrystyana about… well, Liz doesn't even know what the point of her own rambling is, to be honest. That still doesn't stop from her from whining and even getting mad when Khrystyana tries to wrap up the conversation. "You're not letting me finish!" is a fine thing to say to someone who interrupts you, but if you haven't made a coherent point in several minutes, what are you trying to finish even?
"I'm just telling you my feelings," Liz says, and later adds, "I just, like, I just want you to know that, like, I just feel, like, really, like, crappy, you know?" I could die happy if I never heard the pejorative "snowflake" again, but there is something super off-putting about someone who thinks she has the right to hold another person hostage so she can babble about her vague insecurities. Every feeling you have doesn't need to be shared… and perhaps shouldn't when you can't even articulate it!
Bless Khrystyana for being maybe the one example of a non-crazy white person this cycle. She says that Liz seems to be under the impression that she confide in her because she thinks that they're "really close friends," but Khrystyana doesn't know why Liz would feel that way.
She cutely shrugs it off, but we're going to need to Furonda to more bluntly express Khrystyana's point of view:
If Liz were actually Khrystyana’s friend, she wouldn’t dare pull her into a sure-to-be-on-TV moment while she has cream all over her face.
One night in, and the whole house already sees Liz for the basket case that she is. If this is Liz sober, I'd hate to see how ridiculously she'd act on drugs.

#5 – Liberty Netuschil
It is always so incredibly difficult to place someone who clearly deserved to stay longer, but was cut ridiculously early. This cycle definitely had a lot of those, but two were of particular interest. Both Liberty and Christina were eliminated pre-maturely, and deciding who was the stronger model based on such a limited time was problematic. In the end I decided Liberty should come a spot lower. She was arguably one of the strongest photo models of the cycle, and my love for her portfolio is abundantly clear. Quickly she proved her versatility and strength, despite being underestimated. She clearly beat Christina in this aspect, but in my two other categories she fell short. Liberty is a gorgeous girl, and her face is actually very interesting when photographed correctly, but she doesn’t scream model in person. She is definitely one of those girls who would scream actress and singer to me. Similarly, while she had a solid walk, I am still unsure if that would book her jobs, since she does fall on the shorter and plainer side of the spectrum.
With only a handful of shots to choose from, it was clear to see where Liberty’s strengths lie. While she seemed competent in most categories, her angles were far more particular. Straight on was not her friend, and her face did not suit it at all. There was no definition, and it looked too wide, as we can see from her trio shoot. Compared to the rest of her portfolio it was a massively disappointing photo, but I guess there wasn’t much she could have done to avoid that angle in that photoshoot. Still, one bad angle doesn’t make her a bad model. In her music video she displayed incredible versatility, every shot was different, and stunning in its own right. The red hair perfectly off set her typical beauty, and she deserved her first call-out. Looking at the images side-to-side, it is hard to believe that is the same girl.
It makes me incredibly happy that my pre-show favourite actually did well on the show. If only the judges had seen sense; even after they conceded that she was more than a pretty girl during the music video week, they still never seemed to get over it. Then at the first chance they had, well at least in their eyes as she should not have been bottom 2 in the drag queen week, they cut her. Liberty definitely deserved to last a lot longer. At the point of her elimination I would have easily placed her in my top 3, but with the time some other models got they overtook her. Post-show I definitely expect Liberty to do something. Like Sandra, I doubt she will stray from what she did before ANTM, but I expect her to do it incredibly well.

I really wish Liberty had made it to top 6, I don't care about her (stupid) beliefs in Donald Trump's presidency because her photoshoot with the Drag Race alumni was definitely not elimination worthy. I also loved how eager she was to learn about drag queens and homosexuals when it was pride week.
I mean, if it wasn’t for them planning on eliminating her during pride week (which should have been so much more obvious to me, in retrospect), she probably would have actually been eliminated much earlier. Her call-outs show that the judges (aside from her makeover week) never really liked her. I actually think that their planned edit for her wound up making her stay longer than she would have otherwise, so though I think her elimination was kind of bullshit, I’ll take it.

07. Liberty
Liberty is a natural model, that girl knows how to pose and how to make herself look good in photos. I actually think this may is the best photo of the week on a technical aspect. She angled her face very well, and her body positioning is on point : I love the elongating of the leg and the perfectly pointed foot. She makes pregnancy look totally casual. But that’s the problem for me. She makes it look too casual. I don’t get the pregnant mother vibe from that photo, she doesn’t seem particularly happy as she was asked to. So while it is a technically very good picture, Liberty didn’t work the concept well !

4. Activating the Activist
We’ve learned next to nothing about Kyla up to this point, but the one thing we most definitely do know is that she’s an activist, and the show finds a way to mention that fact in just about every scene she’s featured in. I’d rather hear more about the issues Kyla is passionate about than simply “I’m an activist” a million times.
I suppose technically, the show also portrays her as a cake. Looking for a breakout moment, Law Roach says, “I’m still waiting on Kyla to bake that cake.” And on the subject of Kyla’s raw potential, Drew Elliott says, “You have all the bakings, now you just need to turn the gas up.” I don’t know if all the baking metaphors are just because they assume an activist must smoke a lot of weed, but it’s a little silly.
Like cake, activists are rad, so you’re not going to hear any jokes about that part from me, but I do think the show is pigeonholing a girl who we’ve also seen bursts of humor from into this strictly activist role because it seems very “of the moment” or whatever. As if the producers were like, “Let’s get a Trump girl and a Black Lives Matter girl for the house and have them duke it out. Oh and we can put them in the bottom two together at some point for a good vs evil storyline.”
For the most part, though, Kyla and Liberty’s debates seem civil.
For the most part, I said.
Drew must really be attached to Kyla’s activist label because he mentions it nearly as much as she does. When she does her runway walk unsatisfactorily, he complains that he’s still waiting for her “full activist” to come out. (If you can walk a picket line, you can walk a runway!) Then at the photoshoot, he sighs that “she’s not bringing the activism.” I don’t really see how activism would have helped in that particular shoot about royalty, unless she were planning to behead the queen French Revolution style, overthrow the monarchy and free the proletariat.
The one shoot I can think of where activism would be useful was that the first one in Cycle 8 where Tyra had the models take different sides of certain politically charged issues. It’s one of the best moments on the show ever, mainly because Kathleen just DOES NOT GET what it means to be anti-fur or have an opinion in general.
Admittedly, pride week does seem like a good time for her to put her social consciousness on display. She talks about the privilege in being straight and cis, having been in the gay-straight alliance in high school, and having learned how to do makeup from drag queens. (If you’ve ever wondered why she wears so much makeup, that’s probably why.) She’s really excited to represent for the LGBTQ community, too!
“LGBT/Holla holla holla/Hero” as my favorite poet once said.
Then the show throws her a curveball and has her put on a glittery Caitlyn Jenner jacket.
Wait, Kyla does remember that Ms. Jenner is... is...
Yeah, that. There are definitely better transgender figures to support than that rich jackass who peed in a Trump Tower restroom to prove how accepting the now-president supposedly is.
To be fair to Kyla, I’m sure she didn’t personally pick out the jacket. But then, I’m not sure how a person as feminist as she is can tolerate being on a show, that for all of its body positivity, is still pretty regressive when it comes to gender. I’m willing to give Kyla the benefit of the doubt that she sees this show as a platform for amplifying her voice on issues that matter to her. But child… the most “activist” thing Tyra’s done on this whole damn show is to call for equal pay… for MEN. Think about that!
Per usual, Kyla’s face is stunning in her photo, but it doesn’t appear as though she’s putting in a lot of effort for that extra model oomph. Kyla explains it’s because she’s a “chill person,” and Drew correctly points out that work is not the time to “chill.” I can’t imagine Kyla’s that chill while practicing her activism. Maybe she needs to pretend she’s at a protest.
WHAT DO WE WANT? BETTER PHOTOS! WHEN DO WE WANT IT? NOW!
Law Roach seems more preoccupied with her photo’s lack of a neck. “You lost your pretty part,” he whines. Henceforth I will only be referring to people’s necks as their pretty parts.
As for Kyla being a No-Pretty-Part-Monster, I don’t think it’s that her neck isn’t extended in the shot, it’s that she’s wearing a huge neckpiece that’s covering it up.
Kyla lands in the bottom two against her (sort of) Trump-loving (sort of) nemesis, but Kyla chains herself to a tree so she can’t be sent home. Kyla cries upon receiving a second chance, and Tyra revels in it because she loves reducing a girl to tears, since it’s beautiful or whatever nonsense she normally spews. Tyra claims it’s the first time that she feels that Kyla actually cares. Uh, she’s an activist, Tyra, of course she cares about things. If those things happen to be more important than this dumb modeling show, more power to her.
Cosigned.
