The Sims 3 Beta Lighting mod - in process
3 days, my eyes are popping out of my head and I've already opened and closed The Sims 3 more than 300 times but I think if it continues like this, I can retire knowing that I brought the atmosphere I loved so much to life. I am close!

Just installed @northernsiberiawinds new in-game lighting mod and wow...is this even the same game?
This is NO FILTER NO EDITING NO RESHADE/GSHADE. Absolutely stunning work!!

Thank you for the StdMat shader mod! Since you've worked in this area, do you know if it's possible to get specular lights to render indoors? Or not impracticably difficult? I've experimented with modifying the way the game treats the kAmbientOnly lightingMode wrt specular, but there were no observable changes. It's true that indoors we have point lights and I'm thinking new shader code would have to be written to compute specular light from that--and it would be computationally expensive--but at this point I'd just be happy to get indoor speculars to respond to global lights, lol. (Not a request! I'd like to manage it myself, but I'm kinda stuck.) Thx for any ideas!
Hey! To be honest, I haven't much looked into the way lighting is computed.
Searching in the shaders now:
"lightingMode" (kAmbientOnly/kFullLighting) is only set for the SimStandardMaterial 🤔
The sun I'm guessing is a directional light. Some shaders use "distantLightCount". I found "seti distantLightCount (numLightsOfType(directional))" in a few places too.
The "DX8HardwarePath" function uses "DX8StandardMaterialRendering", which uses "StandardMaterialPassesDX8", which seems to handle point and spotlight speculars.
"DX9HardwarePath" uses "DX9StandardMaterialRendering", which doesn't mention them. Its equivalent is potentially "PixelShader2Rendering".
And I ended up checking in game since I was curious: objects do receive specular light from lamps, but not windows 🤔����

I tested with both a point light and spot light lamp.
Windows use spotlights according to SimPE. Maybe those have different parameters, or don't count somehow?

So I highly recommend the Astral Lights lighting mod brntwaffles. This is the closest I’ve seen my game get to the black night sky that I’ve been wanting.

Please ignore my last ask about the roads! sorry! I figure out what was wrong! I uninstalled the lightingmod and reinstalled and it fixed the roads! I think its cause I had the lighting mod first and then the roads and it got messed up when loading but I got it fixed now LOL my bed for bothering!! <3 thank you

Sliders: For Light, Jonha's sliders are great. (except the Head Size slider, new townies will look super spooky with it, but that's just my opinion xD) Additionally, Ahmad's Sliders. If you want M O R E, check out Brntwaffles Sliders Folder (handy) or Shock & Shame's Masterlist Lighting Mod - For Light, Outdoor Lighting Tweaks Seriously. A little heavier is Brntwaffles Lighting Mods (scroll down again) Look around! Pick one you like. Misc Defaults - If you hate some of the default stuff,SimpleLife's Defaults will probably be a lifesaver. Check them out!
