Xie Ke, who often designs hotels, is also a veteran hotel enthusiast. He is willing to change his itinerary because of a destination worth being experienced.

In the Spring Festival of 2008, he drove to Dali with his partner Zhi Hongxin and other friends. Driving around Erhai Lake, they passed by ShuangLang, and a small hotel called “LADYFOUR” caused Xie Ke to change his travel plan and get to know his good friend, Baxun, the owner of LADYFOUR. Therefore, he sketched the rudiment of Sisan · Shuanglang.

If a festival presents a meeting point of the meaning of life, then a ceremony is the origin of the existence of a hotel. With its spatial orders, every hotel recombines the rhythms of experience and encourages people to pay attention to the dramatic details in their ordinary life and re-evaluate their lifestyle.

“LADYFOUR” has defined a ceremony for SISAN·SHUANGLANG, namely, completing the transition from noisiness to quiet and from secularity to relief by means of a central axis.

When Baxun hoped Xie Ke and Zhi Hongxin to build a new “LADYFOUR” for SISAN·SHUANGLANG on the basis of the original buildings three years ago, the designer Xie Ke decided to keep the original ceremony:

With 14 rooms at two floors, and their wide and diversified lake views, the design of SISAN·SHUANGLANG prevails over the interests-centered logic of other local homestays and hotels, and provides guests an enjoyable picturesque life.

Outside is the bustling main street of SHUANGLANG, and there is a restaurant and a bar surrounded by flowers at the front courtyard of SISAN.

Xie Ke’s individual elements, namely his personal signature design elements, such as white walls, old wood, hand-made ceramic tiles, and clear (refined) washed stone packaged the previous warehouses and shops, and constituted the first artistic part of the whole space.

Front Courtyard, Bar and Restaurant In the east-west courtyard, the sunshine differs from day to day in four seasons, but is as free and brilliant as we are in the space. The designer “personally felt the light on the spot, recorded it and actual feeling, and thus designed the light which is dancing in the courtyard of SISAN·SHUANGLANG”.

When SISAN·SHUANGLANG was designed, Chongqing’s KITCHEN COFFE KAH • WOOD’D and GAAGAA KITCHEN had already been in good operation. Persuaded by Baxun, Xie Ke expanded the menu of SISAN·SHUANGLANG.

After a door hidden behind a winding path, a blue stone arch and a fireplace with the rough texture which is specific for SISAN·SHUANGLANG, were brought into the lobby, becoming the exhibits and revealing the memory of “LADYFOUR”.

Under the strong sunlight of Dali, their gray tone allows every guest to immerse in great peace. Turning to the central axis of the space, they welcome a road with trees on its both sides and Erhai Lake which rushes far away at the end of the road.

Great design aims to present the world and natural landscape, instead of landscaping into studios popular for Internet celebrities or objectifying into pictures or images.

Responding to the nature, Xie Ke pursued the creation of an environment which is not limited in form, style or concept. He adjusted the relationship between space and nature by simply thinking to guide people to experience the changes of time at day and night in four seasons.

In the lobby of the hotel, is there the dark furniture and paintings by French artists and the series of photos, titled Nujiang River, by Luo Dan, a famous Chinese photographer, on the walls, which are matched with the melody of classical music.

Long-lasting Enjoyment in Life The light and shadow during day and the candlelight at night contrast with each other at SISAN·SHUANGLANG. On one side are these incoming or outgoing guests; on the other side is the quiet backyard and Erhai River. Staying at the guest room area in the backyard, people can take in Erhai River in a glance. Those white buildings give a wider view and outdoor staircases, balconies, terraces and wooden frames constitute a concave-convex and full picture.

Shaking tree shadows enrich the levels of walls. It has plenty of sunshine and rain in Dali, which makes it especially suitable for plants to grow. Every family has a clean and beautiful courtyard full of flowers. Xie Ke arranged various ecdemic flowers and local plants in the courtyard according to climate, which are prosperous in four seasons.

Each guest room is equipped with an independent courtyard or terrace, and certain of them with two small courtyards. Each room has a different view of Erhai Lake. For the designer, however, such natural lake or courtyard is only one dimension of the hotel experience. Xie Ke used multivariate and multi-dimensional experience, including seeing, listening, touching, smelling, and tasting, to create SISAN·SHUANGLANG into the pronoun of “happy time”

The atmosphere of these guest rooms is determined by its relationship with Erhai Lake. The rooms near Erhai Lake are bright and light-colored in terms of space, furniture and even the artist Li Jun’s “Impermanent Time” series works, and the boundless blue Erhai Lake is the most beautiful decoration for their space. The two largest suites not only embrace both the courtyard and Erhai Lake, but also are equipped with gray and black decorations, dark metal furniture, collected old furniture, Luo Dan’s photography art works titled Nujiang River, which calm down the whole atmosphere to allow people to have a peaceful state of mind and celebrate their rich wonderful sceneries in their eyes.

Yunnan: 9 things to do in China’s wild subtropical wonderland

Yunnan, China (CNN)If there’s a downside to visiting Yunnan, it’s that one trip simply isn’t going to be enough.

China’s southwestern province is its most ethnically diverse.

It’s home to 25 of the country’s 56 recognized ethnic groups.

And each has a unique culture and cuisine.

Then there’s dramatic landscape and breathtaking views that are rumored to have inspired the Shangri-la of James Milton’s “Lost Horizon.”

Here are some of the highlights:

Hani Rice Terraces

Yes, there’s fried cheese in China — and it’s amazing.

Unlike soft or crumbly Western goats cheeses, Yunnan’s version is firm.

It’s sometimes eaten with Xuanwei ham — another regional specialty.

Barbecue, Yunnan style

Because of its location just over the border from Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos, Yunnan cuisine uses spices and herbs more reminiscent of Southeast Asia.

Typical dishes include meat, fish and mushrooms wrapped in pandan or banana leaves, infused with chilies and garlic and then barbecued to perfection.

They’re then served with a side of sweet and spicy fish sauce.

Chicken wings are stuffed with sticky rice and grilled.

And no barbecue is complete without lamb and beef skewers.

A few of these and a bottle of beer makes a delicious dinner at any night market.

Relaxing Xishuangbanna

The palm tree-lined streets of Xishuangbanna’s capital Jinghong feel more like Thailand than mainland China.

Xishuangbanna is an autonomous prefecture, sitting in the south of Yunnan near the border with Laos.

Even in December, daytime temperatures climb to nearly 30 C.

The region is home to the Dai ethnic minority, which makes up about 30% of Yunnan’s population.

Buddhist temples, the Mengla Tropical Rain Forest and ethnic minority parks are some of the places to visit.

There’s also a pedestrian path that stretches for kilometers along the bank of the Mekong River.

Getting there and around

Trips to the Tiger Leaping Gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be booked through guesthouses or the many travel agency booths spread throughout Lijiang Old Town.

Most tours are in Chinese.

Alternatively, private minivans seating up to six people, can be flagged down in the road or hired in front Lijiang’s main bus station.

The China Highlights website offers good tips on hiking the gorge.

Any group tour to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain will include a stop at the Blue Moon Valley and the cable car trip up to the mountain.

Món ăn này bao gồm khá nhiều nguyên liệu như: nước dùng, bún, thịt, trứng, cá hồi, cà rốt, giá đậu nành,…mỗi thứ đều được đựng riêng những những đĩa nhỏ. Không phải là lẩu sườn sụn hay lẩu sườn non là mà lẩu sườn phơi khô. Trong đó, nguyên liệu chính của món ăn này là các miếng sườn non đã được tẩm muối rồi phơi cho se mặt lại và thật ngấm gia vị. Lẩu sườn phơi khô thường được ăn cùng nhiều loại rau và cả Thủy Tinh Tương Hoa – một loại cây chỉ mọc tại hồ Lô Cô rất giòn và ngọt.

Where the hell did 2019 go???

If you were to ask me, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was sitting down at home planning my first trip of the year. The excitement of getting back on the road combined with the stress of visiting a new country still feels fresh in my mind.

So it feels kind of weird to think that a full year has passed since that trip, and even more to realize that 2019 is coming to an end.

So with that in mind, it is time to review my 2019 travel year and the places it took me.

EGYPT

My first trip of the year took me to Egypt, a country that had been on my bucket list for many, many years, which I was very much looking forward to getting to know.

Unfortunately, Egypt fell quite short of expectations, mainly because of the number of touts and scammers that I found in pretty much every city in the country, with the Pyramids of Giza and Luxor being the absolute worst.

Another city I felt disappointed by was Alexandria, one which had been recommended by a few travellers before I got there. On the other hand, I did have a good time roaming around Cairo and getting to see some of the most beautiful sunsets in Aswan.

Even though I wouldn’t put Egypt as a total write-off (no country really is), I unfortunately wouldn’t see myself travelling back there anytime soon.

ETHIOPIA

After leaving Egypt, I decided to go to the heart of Africa once again for the second time in my life, and booked myself a flight to Ethiopia.

Ethiopia was by far my favorite country of 2019. Even months after I left Ethiopia I could not stop singing its praises to anyone who was willing to hear it.

Travelling through the entire country for a month was an absolute adventure-filled experience, full of incredible natural sights. I definitely had a blast travelling by bus from one city onto the next, hiking to the beautiful Blue Nile Falls and visiting the hottest place on earth: The Danakil Depression.

Unfortunately not all my time in Ethiopia was grand, as I did fall sick for a week in Gondar. Luckily, it was also there that I learned how welcoming and helpful Ethiopians truly are, as not only the hosts at my hostel but many others I came across went far and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed during the time I was ill.

My favorite place in all of Ethiopia was definitely Lalibela. Even though Lalibela is only visited for a short period of time by most travellers, the 5 days I spent here were by far the best times I had in the entire country.

FRANCE

An opportunity presented itself in May to return to France; so in the spirit of trying to avoid anything Paris, I opted to travel to the northeastern city of Dinan.

Dinan could very well be the most beautiful medieval town I have had the chance to visit in Western Europe (Sighisoara is still my favorite European city of all times). 

Its cobblestone roads and its old town are the stuff of fairy tales, and its buildings and architecture are extremely well preserved. In short, there is nothing I can say wrong about this small spot in France’s map and would certainly recommend it for a short stay.

BANGLADESH

Bangladesh was my biggest discovery of my 2019 travel year, and certainly one of the most humbling experiences I’ve had during my travel life.

I spent two amazing weeks Bangladesh, most of those days staying with a host family who had invited me to attend one of their relative’s wedding ceremony, a strange but at the same time enjoyable experience.

I also had a chance to travel around Bangladesh for a few days and discover some of the country. I saw some of the most beautiful mountain ranges and the clearest of lakes in Lalakhal, I accidentally crossed the border into India in Bholaganj, I travelled through the Bangladesh capital of tea in Sreemangal, and took a boat to various other places in Sylhet.

To say that Bangladesh is an underrated country wouldn’t be enough. The experiences that I had in this country are parallel to some of the best I’ve had in the many years I’ve been travelling around the world.

CHINA

As it has now become custom every couple of months, I took a few weeks from my 2019 travel year to dedicate them to travelling in China.

My first stop this year was Taiwan, where not only did I get to visit a friend I hadn’t seen in a while, but also I discovered a part of the world I never thought I would have ever had the chance to do so, all under the heat of summer.

I made my way from Taipei to the Toroko Gorge, the most popular destination in Taiwan, and all the way south to Kaohsiung. During the trip, I saw temples, mountains, and ate some of the best food in Asia.

Then I went back to the mainland and made my way to Shanghai, where I spent a few days avoiding crowds and roaming through its busy streets. I enjoyed Shanghai more than I expected, even though the weather was not always on my side.

After a few days, I took a boat towards the abandoned island of Houtouwan, off the Shanghai coast. Houtouwan had also been on my bucket list for quite a while, and I was glad to have made it all the way to one of the eeriest towns I have ever seen in my life.

After Houtouwan, I spent a few days in what many consider to be the most beautiful Chinese ancient town: the Phoenix City of Fenghuang.

This water town is the most picture-perfect place I have visited in China so far, and I’d definitely recommend spending a few days there.

Finally, I spent two weeks in the Yunnan province in western China, where I travelled through some of the most beautiful mountainous sceneries in Lijiang, Dali, and the Tibetan town of Shangri-La.

Yunnan is the Chinese province that packs the most things to do in the country (or at least, very close to Guizhou). Its mountain ranges give the entire province a rural feel.

Even though I spent two full weeks touring the province and I went out to discover every day, I still did not manage to cover everything I wanted to do. So a return trip to Yunnan is definitely in the books, hopefully for 2020.

I capped 2019 with a few small trips in the northeast of China. This time I opted to go to Harbin, the Oriental Moscow, and Dalian, best known for its building of a fake Venice. As well, I did some much needed hiking along amazing mountain sceneries in the Bingyu Valley.

Yunnan: 9 things to do in China’s wild subtropical wonderland

Yunnan, China (CNN)If there’s a downside to visiting Yunnan, it’s that one trip simply isn’t going to be enough.

China’s southwestern province is its most ethnically diverse.

It’s home to 25 of the country’s 56 recognized ethnic groups.

And each has a unique culture and cuisine.

Then there’s dramatic landscape and breathtaking views that are rumored to have inspired the Shangri-la of James Milton’s “Lost Horizon.”

Here are some of the highlights:

Hani Rice Terraces

Yes, there’s fried cheese in China — and it’s amazing.

Unlike soft or crumbly Western goats cheeses, Yunnan’s version is firm.

It’s sometimes eaten with Xuanwei ham — another regional specialty.

Barbecue, Yunnan style

Because of its location just over the border from Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos, Yunnan cuisine uses spices and herbs more reminiscent of Southeast Asia.

Typical dishes include meat, fish and mushrooms wrapped in pandan or banana leaves, infused with chilies and garlic and then barbecued to perfection.

The region is home to the Dai ethnic minority, which makes up about 30% of Yunnan’s population.

Buddhist temples, the Mengla Tropical Rain Forest and ethnic minority parks are some of the places to visit.

There’s also a pedestrian path that stretches for kilometers along the bank of the Mekong River.

Getting there and around

Trips to the Tiger Leaping Gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be booked through guesthouses or the many travel agency booths spread throughout Lijiang Old Town.

Most tours are in Chinese.

Alternatively, private minivans seating up to six people, can be flagged down in the road or hired in front Lijiang’s main bus station.

When thinking of the art of Indochina, one tends to think mainly of the Buddhist art displayed in temples across the area or of the Khmer architecture of Cambodia. But that is to miss a lot of what Indochina has to offer to the art lover. And the region's art is not all ancient! There is a flourishing contemporary art scene throughout the area, attracting serious buyers and collectors from across the globe.

 

To take Vietnam as an example, we can see a long history of artistic works, from the stone age to the present day. As with many aspects of Vietnam's culture, influences have been absorbed from far and wide. Some of the oldest art is displayed through decorated bronze drums depicting scenes of everyday life such as farming, fighting, shipbuilding, music making, etc. Later the influence of China was dominant and the Vietnamese learned many new skills and techniques. Ceramics and porcelain became important.

 

After independence from China, art continued to flourish, with artists combining elements from whichever cultures they came into contact with. During the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam's last imperial dynasty, the emperors encouraged artists and Vietnamese ceramics were exported across Indochina and beyond. Today, calligraphy, originally based on Chinese, now continues using the Roman alphabet, making a unique art form while silk painting and woodblock prints are also very popular.

 

During the French colonisation, artists across Indochina began to absorb European influences and the French established several art schools. Today that tradition of absorption continues and there are rich, vibrant art scenes in Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Bangkok etc. In Hanoi, for example, the old district is a maze of streets where you can find several galleries specialising in contemporary Vietnamese art. You can even find a French style café with art displays and sales.

 

When in Indochina look out for the architecture, not only the original architecture of the indigenous people, but also the strong influences of the Chinese and French. In particular, look out for where these have combined to create something innovative.

 

Laos has a more religion based art. The decorative arts and architecture of the temples and the Buddhist sculptures comprise the high art while in the folk arts the many minorities have their own distinctive styles. Lao ceramics were unknown until the 1970s when they were discovered during excavations in the Vientiane area. Again, western art using oils and water colours were introduced by the French and there is a small but active art community in Vientiane, centred on the National Faculty of Fine Arts, producing original works. Vientiane's T'Shop Laϊ Gallery displays and sells contemporary art.

 

As with much of its population, Cambodia's artists suffered unimaginably during the Pol Pot era, but today, thanks to the Cambodian government. NGOs and the growing number of visitors, a dynamic art scene has emerged here combining the ancient and the modern. But Cambodia's arts highlight must remain Ankor Wat, the peak of the Khmer civilisation's artistic achievement. The architecture and decoration will leave a permanent impression.

 

Thailand, being the most outward looking nation in Indochina, with its more established tourism has a thriving contemporary art scene and has taken part in many European art events. Again, contemporary Thai art combines modern techniques and ideas with the more traditional, which in Thailand's case also means the Buddhist tradition. Traditional art is to be found in the sumptuously decorated temples and in the Buddhist statues. Most art is to be seen in the innumerable temples, but there is also a fine collection in the National Gallery of the National Museum in Bangkok, as well as in many smaller galleries.

 

Yunnan in southwest China has a strong tradition of ethnic art from its minority peoples. Woodblock prints are especially popular, with each artist taking weeks to create each work. Batiks are also produced featuring both traditional and modern topics and themes. Towns and cities such as Dali, Lijiang and Xishuangbanna's Jinghong have gallery shops where you can see and purchase this special art.
