Let's Go! It's Time for... (drum roll, please) ... SUBMISSIONS!
A letter from the editor Let’s renew, refresh, push through and push past, and let’s finally, finally CREATE AGAIN! “Kelly, I am so burnt out. There is no way I can possibly write a piece and submit it to you.” “I love SLM and haven’t seen any of the writing in a while, but…you want MY writing?” I can’t speak for any of you, but for me, personally, it’s feeling pretty apocalyptic out there…

**September 4th**
This day, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the beguiling notion of temptation—an enigmatic force that beckons to us with the softest of whispers, weaving promises that shimmer like the finest gossamer in the dim light of our desires. Temptation, in its most subtle form, lures us in, much like a moth is drawn to the flame, only to enwrap us in its velvet grasp, leaving us entangled in the web it has so artfully spun.
Inspired by these thoughts, I set my pen to paper, crafting a new tale entitled *Crimson Velvet*. The story centers around a femme fatale of exquisite beauty and cunning, who wields her charm with the precision of a finely tuned instrument. Her allure is not merely a gift of nature, but a weapon she has honed to perfection, using it to bend the wills of those who cross her path, leading them down a treacherous road from which few return unscathed.
As I wrote, the rich and indulgent taste of dark chocolate mousse accompanied my thoughts—a confection both sweet and bitter, much like the story itself. The mousse’s deep, velvety texture seemed to mirror the layers of deceit and danger within *Crimson Velvet*. Each spoonful was a reminder of the delicate balance between pleasure and peril, much like the balance that exists in the heart of every temptation, which, though sweet on the surface, often conceals a darkness within.

New Flash Fiction: "TikToktastrophe" in Short Beasts
Short Beasts is a seriously selective online flash fiction literary magazine that publishes roughly four times a year, so I'm elated the editors chose to include my piece, "TikToktastrophe." The story, written during NaNoWriMo 2022, investigates the intersection of family, self-esteem, and social media.

A First Glimps of Tagaytay
The morning was still young, the sun just beginning to cast its golden rays over the bustling city of Manila. The air was thick with anticipation, a palpable sense of adventure as we prepared for our journey. Our destination was Tagaytay, a city known for its breathtaking views and cooler climate, a stark contrast to the sweltering heat and urban sprawl of Manila.
As we drove down the South Luzon Expressway, the urban jungle gradually gave way to a more rural landscape. The towering buildings were replaced by lush green fields, the blaring horns by the chirping of birds. The air grew cooler, a refreshing change from the stifling city heat.
The ascent to Tagaytay was a journey in itself. The road wound its way up the mountain, each turn revealing a new, more stunning view. But nothing could have prepared me for the moment when Tagaytay unveiled itself in all its glory.
As we crested the hill, the city of Tagaytay stretched out before us. Nestled on a ridge overlooking Taal Lake, the view was nothing short of breathtaking. The blue expanse of the lake, the silhouette of the Taal Volcano in the distance, and the lush greenery that surrounded it all combined to create a panorama that was almost surreal in its beauty.
But it wasn't just the physical beauty of the place that struck me. It was the sense of tranquility, the peace that seemed to permeate the very air. The city, despite its popularity as a tourist destination, had retained its charm. The locals went about their day, their faces reflecting the contentment that comes from living in such a beautiful place.
I remember standing there, taking in the view, the cool breeze gently tousling my hair. It felt like time stood still, the moment etched into my memory. It was a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world, often just a short drive away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
That first view of Tagaytay was more than just a beautiful sight. It was an experience, a moment of connection with nature that left a lasting impression. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life - a cool breeze, a stunning view, a moment of peace amidst the chaos of daily life. And it is these moments that make life truly beautiful.

Super proud of our grad student editors‼️ Posted @withregram • @pacificreview pacREV 2021, The Mirror Maze is OUT NOW!! Thank you to our editors and, especially, to our 50+ contributors for making this happen! After the year (and then some) that we’ve had, I’m happy we can still count on some beautiful poetry, prose, and visual art to color our world and our perspective. This issue revolves around identity— what that means and how that changes based on other factors (inner trauma, mental illness, socioeconomic standing, sexual orientation, familial relationships, etc etc.) Our central question?... When forced to confront your own image, what is it that you see? Please help us celebrate by purchasing a copy (or two) or simply sharing this post! Link in Bio! #BornOnThisDay Dora Marsden (5 March 1882 – 13 December 1960) was an English suffragette, editor of literary journals, and philosopher of language.
Beginning her career as an activist in the Women's Social and Political Union, Marsden eventually broke off from the #suffragist organization in order to found a journal that would provide a space for more radical voices in the movement. Her prime importance lies with her contributions to the suffrage movement, her criticism of the Pankhursts' WSPU, and her radical feminism, via The #Freewoman. There are those who also claim she has relevance to the emergence of literary modernism, while others value her contribution to the understanding of #Egoism. via Wikipedia

'Causes' are the diversion of the feeble – of those who have lost the power of acting strongly from their own nature. They are for the titillation of the senses of the herd, and a person who can act strongly should shun all Cause-ites and their works. Strong natures [...] act out their beliefs in their own person, not realizing that such grounds for actions as Causes proffer are in place only among those who, having lost the instinct for action, amuse themselves by words, occasionally are fascinated by the jargon, with consequences disastrous in the highest degree to themselves.
- Dora Marsden, The Freewoman Volume 1 Issue 1, 1913
Dora Marsden is pictured above being arrested in 1909, after an action in conjunction with several other suffragettes which involved her dressing in her full academic regalia as an alma-mater of Owens College in Manchester, UK, to interrupt a speech by the Chancellor of that college and demand that he speak out against the force feeding of imprisoned suffragettes who were on hunger strike.
Marsden, in the following years, would go on to start three literary and philosophical journals which published many important works including some by authors like T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce.
Following her disaffection with the Suffragette movement, she identified as an egoist and an anarchist, and was one of the most prominent voices who brought Max Stirner's scathing critique of society forward into the twentieth century, building upon him to create her own unique philosophy at the intersection of egoist anarchism and feminism. She advocated for free love and individualism and attacked various cultural monoliths she saw as limiting the freedom of people and especially women, arguing that the institution of marriage reduced women to objects whose only purpose was reproduction.
Later in her life, she published works on the philosophy of language and time, the latter from within a mental hospital where she spent the last twenty five years of her life, the hospital having classified her as severely depressed. She left behind a rich legacy and a large impact on the ideological development of many milieus, and has gained an increased amount of attention in the last few years, with a comprehensive biography of her life being published in 2019.

She tells her love while half asleep,
In the dark hours,
With half-words whispered low:
As Earth stirs her winter sleep
And puts out grass and flowers
Despite the snow,
Despite the falling snow.
