Bahrain Raid Xtreme se saltará el Desafío Ruta 40 y surgen dudas de la continuidad del proyecto

Se ha conocido esta semana que Bahrain Raid Xtreme (Prodrive) no estará presente en el Desafío Ruta 40 en Argentina este mes de agosto y que se enfocará en el Rally de Marruecos como preparación al Dakar, con lo que Sebastien Loeb perderá la opción de luchar el título del Mundial de Rally Raid FIA W2RC con Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Según los reportes que vienen desde Francia y España, el auspicio de Bahrein ha terminado, lo que pone en duda la continuidad del proyecto hasta sumar un nuevo socio para Prodrive. Si bien el BRX Hunter ha mostrado competitividad, también ha tenido gran cantidad de problemas mecánicos y mala suerte en las tres ediciones del Dakar que ha disputado. Otro tanto ha sucedido en el Mundial, donde, por ejemplo, llegaban de líderes con Loeb al Sonora Rally en México hasta que un accidente los dejó fuera de carrera y bien lejos de Nasser.

Una posibilidad que se ha comenzado a escuchar es que Renault estaría en conversaciones con Prodrive para su proyecto bajo la insignia de Dacia. Todo indica que el año de lanzamiento para ese prototipo sería en 2025.

The 2023 Dakar Rally heads back to Saudi Arabia for its fourth edition on December 31, with the world's best off-road racers facing 5,000 racing kilometres spread over 14 special timed stages before the chequered flag finally falls at Dammam on January 15. Audi, Toyota and MINI will get challenged during the Red Bull Race.    Known as the pinnacle of Rally Raid, the Dakar Rally is a form of long-distance off-road racing that takes place over several days. The rally was born in 1977 after the French motorcycle racer Thierry Sabine got lost while driving his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally.     Start of the Dakar Rally After finding his way back to the civilised world, Sabine determined to design a race based on his former experience, starting from Europe, then Algiers and crossing the Agadeze before the rally finishes in Dakar. Dakar Rally was born.   The race has grown from destinations in Africa to South America. Now to Saudi Arabia, which may be on- or offroad a total distance of more than several thousand kilometres and requires precise navigation via a road book.    Dakar Rally will be the longest since the start, and participants must tackle 5,000 kilometres of notable routes and 14 stages. The trails have more dunes and potential pitfalls than ever before. The prologue starts tomorrow in Yanbu by the Red Sea and ends in Dammam on the Arabian Gulf on 15 January 2023.     The 2023 Dakar Rally Athletes   The team of champions at the Dakar Rally must endure the racing challenges, and fresh-faced talents must prepare to push themselves to the limit in a decor of the gruelling heat and sands of South Arabia.  Drivers in the T1 Car Class, Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel (FRA), make their way in a Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+. The driver aims for a fourth Dakar title. Nasser said: "We're ready to defend our title. It would be incredible to win again."   Using the exact vehicle are the drivers (ZAF)/Dennis Murphy (ZAF), Giniel De Villiers and, Lucas Moraes (BRA)/Timo Gottschalk (DEU), who also will return to the rally. Sebastian Loeb (FRA) and co-driver Fabian Lurquin (BEL) push their BRX Prodrive Hunter after being runner-up to Al-Attiyah in 2022.     Of course, the Audi Team can't miss out during this critical Dakar Rally race. Three-time Dakar Winner Carlos Sainz and co-driver Lucas Cruz from Spain race in their Audi RS Q e-Tron E2. Monsieur Dakar, Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and co-driver Edouard Boulanger (FRA) will join in Audi's three-pronged assault with Mattias Ekström (SWE) and Emil Bergkvist (SWE). Quite the opposite is MINI driver Kuba Przygoński (POL) with co-driver Armand Monleon (ESP) on board.   On bikes during the competition are Dakar and FIM World Rally-Raid Championship bike champion Sam Sunderland (GBR), who will represent Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing as he targets a third Dakar victory. "The 2023 race is looking to be one of the toughest ever. I'm under no illusion of what that means.", according to Sam.   Another rider is the Australian Daniel Saunders. He scored fourth in 2021 with two-time Dakar winner Toby Price. The Australian said: "The terrain in Saudi Arabia makes the rally very fast. Prodrive presenta escudería con cuatro Hunter para el Dakar 2023: Loeb y Terranova en el equipo oficial, Chicherit y Zala en escuderías privadas

Después de demostrar que pueden pelear por la victoria general con el segundo puesto de Sebastien Loeb en el Dakar 2022, las ambiciones de Prodrive son mayores para este Dakar 2023 y el equipo tendrá un crecimiento al aceptar programas privados en paralelo a la estructura oficial Bahrain Raid Xtreme. Con Nani Roma recuperándose del cáncer, los responsables de liderar el equipo oficial serán Sebastien Loeb y Orly Terranova, pero además de ellos se suman dos reconocidos pilotos en estructuras privadas: Guerlain Chicherit representará a GCK Motorsport y Vaidotas Zala a Teltonika Racing con unidades del Prodrive Hunter atendidas en apoyo de la preparadora británica.

En 2022, Prodrive llegó con ganas de demostrar que el progreso del Hunter había llegado al nivel de rivales como Toyota y Audi. En el Dakar, Loeb anotó la segunda posición y Terranova fue P4. Luego, en la temporada del Mundial de Rally Raid FIA W2RC Loeb batalló con Nasser Al-Attiyah hasta el final, consiguiendo la victoria en el Andalucía Rally y terminando segundo en el campeonato. Antes, en el Rally de Marruecos, aunque fuera de la lucha por el título, Prodrive se había estrenado con un 1-2 con Guerlain Chicherit y Orly Terranova. Luego, el Prodrive Hunter ha demostrado ser un auto que puede ganar y pelear por los primeros puestos y en su tercer año, segundo en la clase T1+, podría finalmente ser el año en que logre este éxito para el conocido preparador británico.

Sebastien Loeb sin duda es el favorito del equipo a luchar por la victoria general. El alsaciano estuvo peleando tanto el Dakar 2022 como el título del Mundial con Nasser Al-Attiyah terminando segundo en ambas. Loeb busca su primer triunfo en el Dakar y 2023 pudiera ser una gran oportunidad para lograrlo. Por segundo año, Loeb pilotará junto a Fabian Lurquin en la posición de navegante: “Tenemos un coche muy bueno para el Dakar después de una excelente preparación en Marruecos y Andalucía demostrando que estamos a la altura del rendimiento del Hunter. Fabián y yo estamos listos para empezar y para concentrarnos en nuestro trabajo dentro del auto desde nuestro punto de vista, así que trataremos de ser consistentes y conseguir algunos tramos limpios sin problemas. Tendremos algunos días largos en las dunas y ahí es donde debes mantenerte concentrado, pero ese es nuestro objetivo este año. Estamos entusiasmados por correr” declaró el 9 veces campeón del WRC.

Por su parte, Orly Terranova será apoyado por el experimentado Alex Haro en la navegación con la dupla consiguiendo un gran segundo puesto en el Rally de Marruecos. Terranova viene de un gran cuarto lugar en el Dakar 2022 y espera lograr un podio con un mejorado Hunter en 2023: “He estado entrenando duro para este, mi 15º Dakar. La primera semana, como todos sabemos, será dura con muchos kilómetros por recorrer en un nuevo terreno en Arabia Saudita que nos pondrá a prueba a todos, por lo que debemos estar concentrados y en la mejor forma posible. Alex y yo estuvimos cerca de ganar Marruecos, pero las rocas pincharon nuestros neumáticos con demasiada frecuencia, así que eso es algo que tenemos que manejar en Dakar. Después del cuarto puesto el año pasado y una victoria de etapa, estamos listos para el desafío” complementó el mendocino.

El Dakar 2023 comienza el próximo 31 de diciembre en Arabia Saudita.
