The Langobards
Tumblr media
The Langobards/Lombards/Longobards are an Italic-Germanic tribe with origins in southern Scandinavia around the first centuries B.C. and A.D.
Their steady migration southward can be retraced by archaeological artifacts, which show their Scandinavian origin.
Their early connections to (the geographical city of) Rome made them very influential in the Western Roman world; on financial, military, religious but also law practice and kingship levels.
The Lombards were quickly christened and were the founding fathers of many religious institutions in northern Italy, ruled Italy, and adapted/adopted Roman Law, making for a culturally rich period. Their capital Pavia is located in the Italian province of Lombardy, named after, you guessed it.
It has to be said (it sounds like a fake fact but it is not) that their name means “Long Beards”. In many European languages the descriptive name can be heard in “Langobard” also written as “Longobard”.

There's this common misconception about Lombards, the "Pannonian Vikings", when they invaded the Italian Peninsula: they did NOT replace the whole population as many people believe. We're talking about 100-120k individuals - military groups with families - coming to a territory that contained around 6 millions of former Roman citizens (including the blended descendants of other pre-roman populations like Veneti, Gauls etc), several Ostrogoths, Byzantines, other Barbarian families. There was quite surely a massacre or exile of Roman élites, but 90-95% of the population were peasants who have always lived on those lands and continued to do so under the new Pannonian leaders. Thus, it's unlikely many italians are direct descendants of "proto-Vikings" as they claim. Ancestry is far more complex and less heroic.
Just wanted to debunk some bullshit people believe in this pathetic Country.

Lombards

well that didnt work. I noticed too late that this one is not fitting the page at all. Like not at all. It was meant for the section about the Lombards but the problem with these people is that they barely left anything of their lifestyle. So naturally it’s quite a challenge to do illustrations about them. But well, I will manage somehow. And I still like the overall idea of this unfinished picture. It just doesnt work.
