Not sure about some of the more real world-esque names in recent SW media ngl. Little boy named Ragnar? Nightsister named Morgan Elsbeth? Are we in 9th century Britain now? I feel like there was a reason SW always slightly changed names that could evoke direct ethnic association (Wilhelm -> Wilhuff) or made regular names more whimsical (Luke ✨Skywalker✨) but just up and calling some little dude Ragnar is so weird like oooo is he gonna hop in his longship and ransack my city when he grows up? Come onn

well maybe if the anglo-saxons didn't keep all their sacred items wrapped in solid gold in undefended coastal monasteries me and my besties would not have been forced to raid lindisfarne.

Ryan Barnes, Hero's Return, 2024, acrylic on canvas, 20 in x 16 in
In this acrylic painting, I really wanted to connect landscape painting with my icelandic heritage and what I have been feeling. I began painting mountains that can be seen on an island in the Norwegian Sea and added to the ocean a norse "picture stone" like depiction of vikings returning. While the two fit in theme, they don't fit in style which is representative of how I feel returning home as a veteran struggling to fit where I once did.

Viking longship found in the Roskilde fjord, Denmark, c.1030
Skuldelev 5 is one of the smallest long ship (17,3m long) in a war fleet, and is ideal for sailing in Danish coastal waters and through the short, choppy waves of the Baltic.
Unlike the other Skuldelev ships, this ship is built using both new wood and recycled timber. A few years before the ship is sunk in the barrier, it is repaired with both new and recycled wood.
Along the sheerstrake there are fragments of the shield-rack, and on the 6th strake on the port side aft there are traces of a carved decoration.
