Mind if I drop another au?
Luciano is a pirate who had been causing a lot of trouble to the marine. With his crew and the ship Smoking Snake he pilages other ships and steals from nobles.
Afonso is a bounty hunter who works for the marine. He targets pirates and took a interest on hunting the young pirate. Luciano had faced many enemies, but the priest was the first to actually make him fear for his life.
Smoking Snakes, I see what you did there 😉
Afonso sailing under the Navy's orders to specially capture the young pirate. He hates pirates, he hates the death and destruction they leave under the guise of freedom. They were hypocrites who only cared about their own greed.
The kid got his interest. He was young, which was rare, but he was also always smiling and laughing. That smile pissed him off.
So he hunted him down. The moment the kid spotted him and opened his mouth to say a witty remark, Afonso started shooting. Unfortunately, the bullets missed his heart and head and the kid lived to see another day.
As he watched the pirate ship disappear in the waves, Afonso cursed and put down his pistols.
"You got lucky, rapaz."

okay heres an actual introduction (???) to my ocs. i originally created these characters almost three years ago, so there's been a bit of tinkering over time. either way, i still love them very much.
Julian Beau Russo
20 year old Fine Arts student that is from Seattle, Washington. He lives in San Francisco, California where he attends school. He plays for his uni's soccer team. Coincidentally his sisters boyfriend, Asher, is the head coach. Although he was born in Seattle, he is of Italian(dad) and Greek(mom) descent. He is fluent in Italian and English. He's also proficient in French.
He currently lives with his teammate, Mateo, and his band mate, Greyson.
Maddox Gray Elrod
22 year old Architecture student that is from Longueuil, Canada. Maddox and his family moved to San Francisco, where his dad is from, when he was 13 years old. He grew up alongside his brother, Alexander, who he currently lives with. Living in a Francophone Province of Canada, makes Maddox fluent in French and English. He is also the reason that Julian is proficient in the language.
He also plays soccer with Julian.
Greyson Rhodes Fox
20 year old Marine Biology student that was born in Bradford, England. Greyson and his family moved to San Francisco for his mom's work when he was really young. Because of moving so young, his British accent is pretty much nonexistent. It's present the most when he's really, really tired. His family speaks German.
Grey plays the drums in a "band" with his friends. They don't make and produce anything seriously, they mainly do it for fun.
Mateo Alexander Kessler
21 year old Engineering student that is from San Francisco. He is best known as the "dickhead" roommate.
Charlotte Lowry
22 year old that is from San Francisco Bay Area. Unlike the boys, she does not attend university and never has. She is a freelance photographer. She also works at a local bookstore cafe that her sister, Elizabeth, owns.
She's also in the band with Julian and Greyson.
* i dont have much to note for Mateo, as he is a developing character. i actually pulled him from a group of ocs i made like 6 years ago, so im hoping to completely revamp him as i go.
Anyway, some side characters that may or may not come up are Jules' siblings: Luciano, Elias, Cora, Maya and Nicolas. As well as the other two band mates: Elliott and Ashton.

Researching the Women of the Sea, the free-diving haenyeo women.
I first discovered these haenyeo women while researching another free-diver, Kimi Werner, as she traveled to dive with them, searching for answers around her worth as a diver, as a woman, as a new/ soon to be mother. She was welcomed into this diving circle with warmth and wisdom. They spoke of their work, daily difficulties, pregnancies and births out on the boats, the value and freedom they experience being the first accepted working mothers of their culture. I thought this was a perfect research piece to bring into my project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In an article I found, the writer, Luciano Candisani, writes:
“… the sea. I am fascinated by the people whose livelihoods depend on it, and I have come to Jeju to learn more about a traditional way of life that, like many such cultures, is at risk of dying out. At the age of 90, Hyun Seon-jik still spends most of her time in the sea, out beyond the waves of Samdal-ri beach. She swims a five-hour shift with her fellow divers, searching for the seafood she collects for trading. Only shells that have grown over 7cm in size are taken; anything smaller is returned to the water to grow.”
This tradition of diving stems from the 17th century off the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Both men and women used to dive with just the air in their lungs and swim down where they would harvest the ocean floor. However, when abalone was confiscated for tax reasons, the male divers were outraged, leaving en mass, searching for other work. The women were left, turning as before to the sea for survival. After each dive the women would return to their homes, talking in their own haenyeo dialect. They began to practice “then-marginalised shamanic rituals, brought to Korea by nomadic peoples from Siberia and Manchuria around 6,000 years ago. With offerings to nature gods, they would thank these animist entities for the copious sea life received, asking for protection against strong underwater currents, storms, and marine predators.” Today we can see this systematic, unique, cohesive culture, founded and managed by the women themselves, in a society ruled by state ideologies holding that women should be subservient to men.
Throughout history, the haenyeo tradition has remained strong, although now, currently, there are only around 4000 remaining haenyeo divers, as young women do not want to take on the lifestyle of their grandmothers. However, there is a wellness and peacefulness in the intensity of these diving women. They don’t want their daughters to have to live this way, but, as stated in the article, the haenyeo are closer than sisters. The sea is their life and joy.
I was really touched when researching these women decided to create a two part linocut of them in my graphic media section. (The second panel is currently drying in the print room.)

Ocean sanctuaries combat poverty on land. Humanity has a vested interest in conserving the ocean. This year, ecologists discovered marine protected areas—places where fishing is restricted or prohibited—can increase the well-being of people living near them and simultaneously help fish populations. In the Mesoamerican Reef, marine protected areas with the strongest regulations raised relative household incomes of neighboring communities while boosting fish biomass. Children in those communities were also roughly half as likely to suffer stunted growth, a key sign of food insecurity. Understanding how and where these co-benefits occur will be important for developing future protected areas, to ensure they are both effective and equitable.

Tumblr media
#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

A discussion was being had on my friend's FB post about the Orcas who are currently engaging in direct action against rich, captialist assholes by attacking their yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar. Now, that is one of *the* most metal sentences of all time, but thats not important. What is important is that someone in the comments shared this absolutely stellar review of the 1977 film, Orca, which I need all of you to stop and read immediately.
Orca (1977) 10/10 - Greatest movie of all time - Reviewer: DroogAlexK, 8/7/03
Warning: Spoilers
Orca is the greatest movie of all time. I'm sure most people say that their favorite movie is the greatest of all time, but they are all wrong.
Orca brings together some of the finest actors. Richard Harris, who unfortunately will be remembered for some trivial movie about a boy wizard and a throwaway musical about King Arthur, does his finest work in Orca. His portrayal of Captain Nolan, an emotionally torn fisherman coming to terms with the fact the marine animals have feelings, deserved the Oscar. Did he win? No, that is not a strike against this fine film. Charlotte Rampling brings texture to the marine biologist in love with a whale baby killer. The romance between the two is subtle. While most modern Hollywood movies would just throw in a gratuitous sex scene, Rampling accomplishes just as much with confused looks and having her shirt zipped down in one scene. Will Sampson, who is sadly better known for some movie about flying over a cuckoo's nest, also does a fantastic job of playing the Native American guy who says cryptic things and has ice fall on him. Robert Carradine, famous for Revenge of the Nerds, shows great range in not being around much and then being eaten by the whale. Bo Derek never equaled her success in this film elsewhere. I really believed her leg was bit off. She sold me.
The effects were great for the time. Many forget what special effects were like in those days, myself included because I was not born yet, but the point remains. The strange fisheye lens used to represent the whales point of view was genius. And I challenge everyone to find a more realistic looking whale fetus in a movie. You can't, you just can't. The dramatic fight between Captain Nolan and the whale could have easily become silly, but it doesn't. The Arctic Circle is accurately represented as a cold place with many iceberg, some of which whales can thwack themselves upon catapulting middle-aged Irishmen forty feet in the air. Keep in mind, also, this was done without the use of computer graphics. Steven Spielberg did not even put the shark in Jaws until over halfway through the film. Why? To hide a machine so fake that I can only assume one of his children made it at camp. The mechanical killer whale in Orca is almost indistinguishable from the stock footage of killer whales continually played throughout the movie.
In 1977, how many directors were brave enough to shoot a killer whale jumping from one side of the boat, eating actor Robert Carradine, and landing on the other side? Just one, Michael Anderson. His bold choices along with screenwriters Luciano Vincenzoni and Sergio Donati (who both show an above average command of the English languages for native-born Italian speakers) make the film a statement not only about whale hunting and whale forgiveness seeking, but also about humanity. Charlotte Rampling's appeal to Nolan not to go fight the whale just because the whale wants revenge is not just about social protocols of how to make it up to the father of a whale baby you accidentally killed but also an argument against the death penalty. Will Sampson's pointless death is an indictment of the senseless slaughter of tens of millions of Native Americans. When the whale knocks down Captain Nolan's house without any explanation of this whale became such a genius that he can not only knows to knock down structural supports but also can look up addresses in the phone book, it directly shows how our incursion into the world of nature is two-fold. Robert Carradine's tragic death in the film is social commentary on the probability of being eaten if you stand around on a boat being followed by a crazed killer whale. And probably also something about Vietnam, I assume.
And while most in Hollywood choose not to admit it, many have ripped off Orca. The dead baby scene in Trainspotting is suspiciously reminiscent of the dead whale fetus scene in Orca. The creepy quasi-romance between an intelligent female and a somewhat crazy violent child murderer is directly stolen by George Lucas for Star Wars: Episode II. The use of icebergs is blatantly co-opted by Titanic, and I have never heard James Cameron so much as thank Michael Anderson. And don't even get me started on Free Willy. Orca is a complicated story. If you only enjoy movies with obvious heroes and villains, this is not for you. The characters are conflicted. Very conflicted. Take for instance how the killer whale jumps for joy after biting off Bo Derek's leg. The whale shows both glee in his jumps, but also the pain of having lost his family and never being able to bring them back no matter how hard he fights those who took them from him. Like Batman. You see, the only thing black and white in this movie is the killer whale itself. While Orca does not now get the respect it deserves, in time people will realize its genius. Just as people did not understand gravity or continental drift, in time they will come to recognize Orca as the greatest cinematic achievement of all time.

San Francisco - A Walk Through North Beach And Lunch In The Park As I stepped out onto the bustling streets of North Beach, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee cutting through the morning marine layer filled my senses. I made my way to Caffe Trieste, a local favorite for a morning cappuccino. The place was buzzing with the sound of coffee grinders and lively chatter. This legendary caffe is the meeting place of authors, artists and long-time residents. I ordered a cappuccino, and as I sipped the hot, creamy espresso, the steamy cup enveloped me like a warm, comforting hug. As the sun broke through the dense fog, I made my way, coffee in hand to Molinari Delicatessen, a legendary establishment that had been around for over a century. The moment I stepped inside, I was hit with the smell of cured meats and aged cheeses. The place was packed with people clamoring for their signature sandwiches, and I knew exactly what I wanted - the Luciano Special. The sandwich was a masterpiece - layers of Parma prosciutto, sweet coppa, fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, and lettuce on grilled focaccia bread, and within minutes, I was handed a brown paper bag heavy with goodness. With my sandwich in hand, I made my way to Washington Square park, one of the best places in the city to people-watch. The sun was shining, and the park was alive with activity, couples strolling arm in arm, kids chasing each other through the park, dogs running through the grass. I found a quiet bench, and as I unwrapped my prize, the sandwich practically hums with flavor and texture. I took a bite, and the flavors exploded in my mouth. The saltiness of the prosciutto was balanced perfectly by the sweetness of the coppa, while the sun-dried tomatoes added a burst of tanginess. As I sat on a bench, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the deliciousness of my sandwich, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this moment of pure bliss. This was San Francisco at its best - a melting pot of cultures, flavors, and experiences. And as I took my last bite of the Luciano Special, I knew that this was a memory that I would savor for a long time to come. @caffetriesteofficial @molinaridelicatessen (at North Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoptLpXv8SI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
