BANGKOK, CONTRASTES DE PASADO Y PRESENTE EN LA CAPITAL TAILANDESA; Por Rosana Saburo

Hiiiiii,
I hope you're watching Century of Love or at least gifs from ep 5 reached you cause there was a crucial bridge scene and I need to know where this bridge is and who better to ask than the bridge expert!
(watch me use the word "bridge" way too often to entice you)
Thank youuu <3
Hi Kat! @troubled-mind
Century of Love: Queer lakorn? I AM ABSOLUTELY WATCHING IT (Khun Chai is one of my favourite qls, so ths is very much hitting the right spots for me. Yes, we lost the poisonous glitter but I guess we got a shiny rock that brings pain in exchange)
I am no bridge expert, but I happen to have found this bridge before 😂😂😂
It goes by several names, like Lumphini-Benchakitti Park Walkway or The Green Bridge, Lumpini Park - Benjakiti Park (location here).
Its name comes from its linking Lumpini Park and Benjakitti Park, the latter has also appeared in Vice Versa (below) (location here)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are the bridge's various appearances in media that I've spotted so far!
Takeover Bangkok with Tay Tawan This isn't a drama, but a travel series to promote various spots in Thailand

Lumphini Park in Bangkok will forever be one of my fave parks in the world because:
A. It’s futuristic and aesthetic.
B. It’s super clean and well maintained. Totally safe at night.
C. Sunset dates are the most romantic.
D. You can hang out with 7 ft long carnivorous monitor lizards who live peacefully among Thai people.

Question from the Fanfic Writers Ask Game:
11. What’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? Also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?
I'm extremaly curious to know what type of fandom research people do and learn about their discoveries.
Hiiii! Thank you for taking interest in this, I appreciate you sending me the ask ❤️ Hmm, I have a weird relationship with research: I always feel I do 1. No research at all and 2. Not enough, when I acknowledge to myself I had to look up at least SOME things for my fics. In general, I am ignorant about a LOT of stuff, so research feels daunting and scary and even when I discover what I want to, I don't know how to incorporate that into my stories or if it's even correct information. I feel super self-conscious about it, which is why I normally don't write fics that require knowledge I'm not at all familiar with. Cowardly, sure, but the potential mistakes are too many for me to take that risk. (I'm learning though! The next fic I'll post will include some Thai cultural stuff related to Dharma that I had to thoroughly study about. I can only hope I won't screw it up.) Self-deprecation aside, I'm going to share some of the stuff I had to research for my fics - posted or not - to help people understand what I mean:
1. I had to look up various medical facts about stabbing (how deadly it is, how much time someone needs to heal etc), due to a scene that involved one in The Knight's Pawn, 2. I looked up videos of Muay Thai sparring matches in order to be able to write a sparring match in The Knight's Pawn - as well as see the differences from western boxing. Muay Thai is also something I've researched for another fic and to properly understand Pete as a character, 3. I had to look up sooo many chess terms for The Knight's Pawn, specifically for the chapter titles and summaries. Fun fact, the title of the fic makes no sense in chess; I told my irl friend who plays chess as an amateur about it and he proceeded to lose his mind lmao, 4. This will sound silly probably, but I studied Bangkok's map in order to be able to figure out a driving path for a trip down memory lane. I specifically wanted to figure out the distance between the main and minor family compounds (fun fact, it's approximately 15 minutes by car and 1 hour via public transport). I also looked up Lumphini Park and it's how I found out about dragon lizards! Very cool creatures, I wouldn't go near one ever, though, 5. I don't know if this one counts, but for the things you can(not) change, I had to watch Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox around 5 times in order to be able to portray the parallels correctly haha, 6. Since just a mission was based on ApoBuild's Bvlgari event, I looked up the venue it took place in, which is Icon Siam near Chao Phraya River, one of the most famous shopping malls in Bangkok, 7. For To Consume and Be Consumed's 1st chapter I had to... um... look up if it's possible for someone to not get an erection even if both the prostate and the penis are stimulated for a long period of time. The results suggested it is, so I tried to not stress over it too much 😅 The reception of the chapter was a lot better than I anticipated too, so I was happy with it, 8. Now, to start off about the fics that haven’t been posted yet and to remain in the spirit of the horny, I've looked up about autoerotic asphyxiation, if it's safe to use ice cream during sex (it isn't), if it's safe to have sex when someone is sick (it depends), the effects of GHB and how damaging a human bite can be (a lot if it's not treated immediately due to the bacteria in our mouths), 9. In the same realm, I've done a LOT of studying about La Pietà, the famous sculpture by our boy Michelangelo, so much so that for a while I couldn't escape it - I was seeing it everywhere. I'll keep the reasons for doing such research hidden for now, but it does involve smut xoxo, 10. I've only scratched the surface for this one, but I have begun studying about chronic pain for a post-canon VP fic I want to write. It doesn't involve smut and I don't think it will, but you never know, 11. Again, idk if it counts, but I've read Uzumaki for a NonWhite/TeeWhite fic I want to write one day, in order to draw parallels and whatnot. I'm very into parallels in case you haven't noticed haha, 12. Last, but certainly not least, the most difficult thing I've been researching and will probably never stop researching is Buddhism. To truly get Pete, you need to understand even the basics of Dharma and there are just so many things I don't know about it. Baby steps, but I'm getting there.

This itinerary acts as your guide, not a rigid schedule, allowing you to craft the perfect adventure based on your interests, whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or a temple enthusiast.

Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha): Pay homage to the massive reclining Buddha statue and explore the temple's maze-like courtyards. This might also be included in a Grand Palace and Temples tour.
Cultural Delights:
Wat Pho Thai Massage School: Learn the ancient art of Thai massage in a traditional setting.
Jim Thompson House Museum: Explore the former residence of an American silk merchant, offering a glimpse into Thai history and culture.
Lumphini Park: Escape the city bustle in Bangkok's largest park, perfect for picnics, boat rides, or simply relaxing amidst the greenery.

crystal NOT in nagasaki, thailand: part three
Hello and welcome finally to the FINAL part of my Singapore and Thailand adventures of winter break 2024! It's been a long journey and I've admittedly grown tired of writing about it, but WE'RE SEEING THINGS THROUGH IN 2024!! Thanks to everyone for sticking around through all of the parts, and I hope at least some of it has been interesting for you. <3
Anyway, let's talk about my last day in Thailand!
Before today, we had mainly been getting around on foot or by motorbike, which was very fun. Using an Uber-like transportation app called Grab in Thailand was incredibly cheap, and if you traveled by motorbike, you could take a 10 minute trip for only about $1 USD. Getting past the awkwardness of riding on a motorcycle holding onto a complete stranger, it was actually incredibly fun. But it's not for the faint of heart, because the bikers in Thailand love to weave through traffic in a terrifying yet admittedly exhilarating way.
Anyway, on our last day we decided to take the metro instead to switch things up, and it was an interesting experience. In many ways it was similar to train travel in most other countries. Most locals used IC cards to enter and leave the trains like Japan, but instead of tickets for single rides, in Bangkok they instead used small black chips, which I liked a lot. Since they're reusable and easy to clean, it seemed much better for the environment!
Tumblr media
It was also funny seeing signs in the metro station forbidding durians from the trains, because of their strong smell.
Tumblr media
I also saw a really interesting sign for the priority seats on the train, which included the standard symbols for the elderly, injured, pregnant, and mothers, but was interested to see another addition: an orange figure representing a monk. Monks are deeply revered and respected in Thai culture, which is one reason for their special treatment. Another is that monks are forbidden from touching women--even accidentally--so by giving them a priority seat, it allows them to better separate themselves from other passengers and avoid any accidental contact.
Tumblr media
That morning we walked around some parks with our local friend who lives in Thailand with his Thai mom and American dad. We first strolled through Lumphini Park, where we enjoyed some tropical greenery and saw some monitor lizards relaxing by the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there we walked along an elevated walkway called the Green Bridge, which took us to Benchakitti Forest Park. Many people enjoy using the walkway for biking, walking, and running, where they can have a nice view of the city and not have to deal with traffic or crosswalks.
I found this cat on the walkway. He's the cutest little obstruction of foot traffic. <3
Tumblr media
The walkway was built over and around the locals' houses, so at times it felt like we were right beside people's windows and intruding on their private space. Our local friend showed us how some of the locals use this to their advantage, selling cold drinks out of the windows of their houses to people using the walkway. There were even a few places where buckets and rope pulleys had been installed, so the houses below could exchange goods and money with the walkers and bikers above.

After a pleasant stroll across the raised walkway, we reached Benchakitti Forest Park. According to our local friends, it used to be a huge tobacco field and processing plant, but was bought by one of Thailand's former queens and converted into a park for the citizens of Bangkok to use. The park was built not only to create more green spaces in the city, but to attempt to teach the people living in the city a little about ecology. Our friend told us that people living in the city can get to experience a mini version of Thailand's rich ecological diversity by walking through the park, because many of them don't leave the city often, if ever. The park also has a water plant which purifies rainwater and sewage into clean water for the city. It's a beautiful area and it's great to see projects like this promoting green spaces and education in urban areas!

After enjoying our walk and getting an eyeful of the beautiful greenery, we stopped at a local restaurant to eat khao soi, a regional dish from northern Thailand. It's traditionally made with hand-cut egg noodles served in a spicy coconut curry broth and topped with crispy fried noodles. I fought my way through the initial spiciness and it found it was very tasty!

After a filling and delicious meal, we met back up with our other friends at the Chatuchak Weekend Market, a huge outdoor market selling lots of cheap and local goods. It's the largest market in Thailand with more than 15,000 stalls. I felt like I wandered through the stalls for forever in every direction and never found an end. I was able to buy several beautiful dresses and jewelry for myself and my partner for very cheap prices, and had to buy a new bag as well to be able to take it all back with me.

Thailand is also famous for muay thai boxing. We didn't have time to watch any fights, but I had a fun time pretending to box with this muay thai statue.

In the middle of shopping, I took a short break with my friends to enjoy some fresh fruit juice and banana roti, a variation of the roti prata we enjoyed in Singapore. It's filled with bananas and topped with sweetened condensed milk, some of my favorite things, so it was of course delicious.

We shopped and walked around the streets a bit more, then split up around dinnertime. I went to a street-side all-you-can-eat barbecue place with a few friends, where we grilled meats and vegetables on a stovetop on the table. Because the weather in Thailand is warm year-round, it's pretty popular and common to eat outside.
Tumblr media
For dessert, our local friend showed us a simple dessert: apple slices dipped in a mix of spices. Even dessert in Thailand is spicy! It wasn't too bad though, and the flavors complemented each other well. My genes are not compatible with south Asia, where both the food and the weather makes me dissolve into a sweaty puddle. Nevertheless, I persist, in the name of the beauty and culinary delicacies of the region.

I had a late flight that evening, so after dinner I headed back to our lodging to pack my things and head to the airport. At the airport I saw a beautiful statue. When I looked it up later, I found that it depicts an event in Hindu mythology called the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. It depicts a scene between the devas (demigods) and asuras (demons), who are pulling on the naga (king of serpents) to churn the water of the ocean to receive the elixir of immortality. The churning brings to the surface several treasures from the bottom of the sea, including a pot containing the elixir. After the elixir is acquired, the devas banished all the asuras out of heaven to the underworld.

Like much of Thailand's spiritual art, it was ornately decorated with impressive detail. It was a lovely cultural send-off as I prepared for my journey back to my home in Japan.
Well, there it is! We've finally made it to the end of my journey to Singapore and Thailand. I was able to learn so much about the cultures of these two places and ate some of the tastiest food I've ever had in my LIFE. I'm incredibly grateful to both my friend's family in Singapore for taking me in and teaching me so much, as well as to my new friends in Thailand who volunteered some of their own free time to show us around Bangkok. Thanks to them, I was able to learn firsthand about the culture from people who actually live there. I truly enjoyed my time and am eager to return again someday to see and experience even more!
Thanks for reading <3
