Twisted Love, by Ana Huang 📷
“I never claimed to be Prince Charming, and my love isn’t a fairy-tale type of love. I’m a fucked-up person with fucked-up morals. I won’t write you poems or serenade you beneath the moonlight. But you are the only woman I have eyes for."
I was so close to DNF'ing this, and honestly, I hate-read my way to the end. It's a shame really, because I feel like Huang isn't a bad writer per se, but her characters are completely intolerable (to me) and she needed to make better choices about what was included in this book.
Firstly, this book has every trope you could possibly imagine and I am not exaggerating. This is every wattpad story ever written crammed into one (too long tbh) book. Brother's best friend, grumpy-sunshine, billionaire CEO who doesn't like anyone else, crazy ex-boyfriend, one bed, family members out for your money, family members who wanted to kill you, oh shit actually you're adopted—everything. EVERYTHING. It's too much.
And even if we put that aside...let's move onto the characters.
Ava: the girl with so much trauma she has night terrors and a mysterious past she can't remember, whose father acts like he hates her, whose ex stalks and manhandles her, and oh yeah, she's SO nice and SO happy and just the BEST PERSON EVER all the fucking time, because none of that affected her. At all. ✔️ Check.
Alex: What isn't Alex Volkov? No seriously, what can't he do? And that's not a compliment.
He drove the same way he walked, talked, and breathed—steady and controlled, with an undercurrent of danger warning those foolish enough to contemplate crossing him that doing so would be their death sentence.
Alex’s parents had died when he was young and left him a pile of money he’d quadrupled the value of when he came into his inheritance at age eighteen. Not that he’d needed it, because he’d invented a new financial modeling software in high school that made him a multimillionaire before he could vote. With an IQ of 160, Alex Volkov was a genius, or close to it. He was the only person in Thayer’s history to complete its five-year joint undergrad/ MBA program in three years, and at age twenty-six, he was the COO of one of the most successful real estate development companies in the country. He was a legend, and he knew it.
“I’m not bragging. I have hyperthymesia, or HSAM. Highly superior autobiographical memory. Look it up.”
Stop. Please, I'm begging you.
And if you thought that might have just been her thoughts about him, well...
I didn’t do sweet nothings or lovemaking. I fucked a certain way, and only a specific type of woman was into that shit. Not hard-core BDSM, but not soft. No kissing, no face-to-face contact. Women agreed, then tried to change it up halfway through, after which I’d stop and show them the door.
You like to take a woman from behind and throw in some dirty talk and degradation babe, it's really not that deep 🥴
It's giving ✨i'm not like other guys✨
So anyway after we filter through at least 3178920 predictable plots and sideplots and just sideways journeys that didn't really need to be in here, finally we get to a third-act breakup (his choice) after which he decides he doesn't like (his choice) and decides to stalk her. For over a year.
“I’ll file a restraining order against you. Have you arrested for stalking.” “You can try, but I can’t guarantee my friends in the British government will comply.” His face darkened. “And if you think I’m leaving you alone and unprotected anywhere, you don’t know me at all.”
Ummm bro, the only danger to her here is you, are you kidding me? And sunny old Ava who was literally stalked by her last boyfriend (and it was a whole damn plot point) is like you know what, I love this guy who's stalking me! I'll give him another chance! Sure!
But wait, wait, wait, only after he serenades her with a love song. I'm not kidding. Oh, and you guessed it—voice of an angel, because there's nothing Alex Volkov can't do.
Personally I feel like ten years have passed since I picked up this book yesterday and some chick was stranded in the rain on the side of the road.
Also, minus ten points for
thick, and hard as a steel pipe—

Just...no. Just no.
I'd love to have something more positive to say but I really don't have anything. The side characters were more tolerable than the main characters and that's the only reason I'm wondering if I should subject myself to the next book in the series, but honestly? I really don't think I can. I wish I'd picked up one of the fanfics on my TBR instead 😶

I don't know if you've talked about this yet but would love to hear your thoughts about Wooyoung and his tattoos (and in turn San as well since they have matching). As a tattoo lover myself I love getting tattoos and think they're such a fun way of self-expression but I known it's only recently where openly get tattoos and are excited/open to sharing them with fans
OK the fangirl flipping out answer is going to come first: Both Wooyoung and San's tattoos make my GUMS itchy with delight because they evince something I want so so so so badly to be true about each of them and them together.
I want Wooyoung to be as free spirited and daring and devil-may-care as he seems. I want him to be inhabiting pieces of the Idol protocol but be thinking of a way of bursting out of it or changing it to suit him better, whatever that might be. He excites me as an artist and performer and public persona, so being tattooed and an Idol, and having all his tattoos be like, a declaration of everlasting friendship with the magical Choi San, or that thing he has on his back about not being alone, or the rose in that interesting black shading? I'M ALL FOR IT. Also, URGE TO BITE is very strong whenever I think about those tattoos.
And San. Oh Saaaaaaaan. San san san. San really has perfect skin. You know? He really does. Poreless, smooth, glossy. And he knows it too. He enjoys having pretty skin and keeps wanting to show more and more of it to people. For him to get a TATTOO on his pretty skin for Wooyoung? Because he wants to be committed to his friend that he found on the job? WHY IS HE SO KIND? WHY IS HIS HEART SO BIG? WHY IS HE SO FUCKING PERSUADABLE? WHAT ELSE CAN HE BE PERSUADED TO DO IN THE RIGHT HANDS?!?!? I get rabies symptoms when I think about San getting that friendship tattoo, the one that Wooyoung must've picked out.
I want their friendship to be real, and be everlasting. I had friends that I thought I was going to be forever friends with, and then I wasn't, and it almost killed me every time, so I want THEM to have that, forever, for real.
The more rational analytical answer under the cut:
You know how I said that Korea tends to stay completely in stasis, until there's like, a sudden click, and then it switches overnight? The social acceptance of tattoos has been kind of like that, and I think it probably happened about 10 or 15 years after the switch on tattoos happened in the West.
Law and MBA programs used to advise Americans that if they wanted to get jobs at the white shoe firms or the big I-banks, they should not get tattoos, and if they must, to get them in 'discreet' places that can be completely covered up by business casual or formal clothing. And then... it didn't matter anymore, right? It used to be that in Korea, you would only get a tattoo if you were just going to drop out of respectable society. Be a criminal, in the worst case (similar to the yakuza) or generally lead a dissolute life or just be some sort of outre artist type. Then it just flipped! Your friendly neighborhood barista at the Coffee Bean might have a little tattoo on her forearm that's constantly visible! Idols, who are supposed to present 'ideal' behavior at all times off stage could get tattoos and show them off!
I have to say though, for the conservative middle class, of which I belong, tattoos are still a no. We're not going to be shitty to people who have them, but we're not going to get them. It's considered daring if someone has her upper ear pierced, in my IRL social circle. I've never seen a single woman with a tattoo or a body piercing at my gym's changing room or sauna.

So, in Brazilian gambling news, the playing of the betting game Fortune Tiger by children and teenagers inside schools has been growing in the country.

Despite being banned in Brazil, Jogo do Tigrinho, as it's known in Portuguese, works on betting websites and apps, and went viral on social media this year.
In June, the Children and Consumption program of the Alana Institute denounced Meta to the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of São Paulo after identifying profiles of young influencers, between the ages of 6 and 17, who promote betting sites by providing access links for children and adolescents. According to Marcelo Lau, coordinator of the MBA in cybersecurity at the Faculdade de Informática e Administração Paulista (FIAP), it is difficult to hold those responsible accountable and punish them. This is because “many of the platforms that offer this type of service do not have any representation in Brazil.”
Even students who benefit from Pé-de-Meia [a program that seeks to encourage students from low-income families to attend high school classes with an yearly amount of R$ 200, or ~US$ 36] are becoming addicted and using the money to place bets online.

i was just curious and you def don't gotta answer, but what type of grad program are you in? did your program require the gre?
I'm in a PhD program for earth and environmental sciences-- or, rather, I'm planning on mastering out of one. ("Mastering out" is basically just taking the master's degree you earn along the way and graduating with the master's instead of finishing the full PhD. I didn't have a master's coming in, but research is kicking my ass so I think I'm gonna flee with the master's and teach lol.) Mine did not require the GRE, and though some programs still do it's becoming increasingly common to not include the GRE as a requirement. Even though I took the GRE (because the summer I took it, I didn't know which program I wanted to go into), I'm really glad that it's more common to drop the requirement for it.
For those who don't know, the GRE is the standardized test for grad school. It was also $205 for me to take, and that was in 2021 so the price may have gone up since then. Grad school applications can really add up, and honestly, the GRE doesn't really predict how well you do in grad school anyway. But there are plenty of (FUNDED) programs that don't require it!
P.S. Do NOT go to grad school if they don't pay you to do it. If they accept you and expect you to pay tuition, it's a soft rejection; if they actually want you they'll leave room in the funding for you. This is true for humanities and STEM degrees, like if you're getting a PhD in English or environmental science, but isn't necessarily true for professional degrees that don't involve research, like MBA programs. This is one of the things that I allow myself to be annoying about because this isn't well-known outside of academia but I do NOT want anyone to be scammed into paying $30,000 that they shouldn't have to pay.
This is way more than what you were actually asking about but anyone is totally welcome to ask me questions about grad school!!

Rainbow Coalition
I hadn’t seen Humboldt Park in what felt like months. And even though I hadn’t been very far at all, just 5 miles up the road on North Avenue in fact, it felt like I had been living in an entirely different world and time. And maybe I was. After all, your reality is mostly in your mind and has very little to do with where you are physically. In a nutshell, Lincoln Park was no longer home.
That’s probably why me and Celeste were having such a hard time getting along lately. I was having the most difficult time focusing and I was becoming extremely difficult to live with. Between legal woes and finding my footing in an industry that was as demanding as you would expect Investment Banking to be, I had become increasingly restless.
Stuck at a red light on North Avenue and California, I couldn’t help but gaze at the Humboldt Building that always seemed to have a line of people that stretched around the block each morning. Maybe they had programs in place that would also be able to help someone with a tortured mind. It was time to put an end to the madness. I’m exhausted from all the running. Certainly there has to be a way to end the racing thoughts and paranoia. It was ending everything else in my life and was on pace to eventually have its way with me as well. I can feel the clock ticking. The soul knows when it doesn’t have much time left with its body.
“I can get out right here.” I said before hopping out the Uber and slamming the door behind me.
I recognized the North Hotel and knew it would be a lot easier to just stay there for the night. Considering that my original plan was to go straight to O’Hare and read my securities textbook until Beatriz touched back down in Chicago, a $48-a-night SRO stay sounded much better than waiting by the carousel for my ex-girlfriend to show up sliding her luggage behind her as she fake laughs with the other stewardesses. Besides, she was just going to lecture me about how I should have never gotten off my medication as she arranged for me to use her American Airlines discount to book a flight to Puerto Rico. Once I pulled the front door open of the hotel, I immediately was relieved from a sub 11 degree windchill. This was the warmest I’d been in a couple days. It was slightly warmer than the Harold Washington Library and much warmer than the McDonald’s and Starbucks.
The lady behind the front desk had a very welcoming expression on her face as I approached her, and I gotta be honest, it was the friendliest expression I’d seen in about a week or so. I tend to recognize those type of details these days.
“Hello, I was looking to book a room just for tonight?” I said.
“Sure. Our smallest rooms start at $60 and our double bedrooms are as much as $120 per night. Do you have any pets with you?”
“The smallest one is fine. Does the room come with WiFi? I work from home and can’t complete my tasks without it.” I explained.
“Yes, all our rooms come with free WiFi . The password is on a menu next to the phone by the bed.” She said.
“Great. I’ll take it.” I said as I slid my credit card from out my Donald Duck wallet.
“Do you have any pets with you?” “No.” “Name?” “My name is Los Cruz.”
Once I got to my room, I threw my backpack that said NIU MBA Program on the bed and raced to the bathroom to turn the shower handles to as hot as possible. As the bathroom mirror steamed up, it slowly began to hide my reflection and I was ever so grateful that it did.
Celeste was right. I don’t even love myself.

Behavioral tactics in Loyalty Programs
Enhancing Loyalty Programs with Behavioral Science
As someone who worked in consulting before my MBA, I've had extensive experience with loyalty programs across hotels, airlines, and credit cards. These programs are fascinating not just for the rewards they offer but for how they apply behavioral science to subtly shape consumer behavior and enhance customer service.
Principles of Behavioral Science in Service
Behavioral science tells us that the timing of interactions and the way options are presented significantly influence customer perceptions. For instance, a hotel might adjust the timing of its check-in process or room upgrades to maximize guest satisfaction. Airlines may strategically offer fast-track security processing to frequent flyers when the airport is busiest, enhancing the perceived value of the loyalty program.
Application in Loyalty Programs
Credit Card Programs: Credit card companies often time their rewards and bonuses to coincide with periods of high spending, such as holidays, to maximize the attractiveness of their offers. The presentation of accumulating points or cash back can motivate customers to prefer one card over another due to the perceived value of 'earning' on purchases. An example of this is the end-of-year "double points" promotions many cards offer, which encourage cardholders to spend more during the holiday season.
Hotel Loyalty Programs: Hotels use customer data to personalize service, which can deeply influence guest loyalty. For example, returning guests might find their room preferences remembered and applied automatically, from pillow type to room temperature. Another strategic use of behavioral science is offering complimentary upgrades or late check-out, which are highly valued by guests and can turn an ordinary stay into a memorable experience, encouraging repeat visits.
Airline Loyalty Programs: Airlines expertly apply the principle of exclusivity through tiered rewards. Frequent flyers earn status levels that come with increasingly desirable benefits, such as upgrades, lounge access, and priority boarding. This creates urgency and a sense of achievement among consumers, who often plan their travel—and even spend more—to reach the next tier. Moreover, the introduction of "milestone rewards" after reaching certain thresholds can keep flyers loyal as they strive to unlock the next set of benefits.
Conclusion
Understanding and applying the principles of behavioral science can significantly enhance the effectiveness of loyalty programs in the credit card, hotel, and airline industries. These strategies not only improve the customer experience but also build a stronger emotional connection to the brand, which is a powerful competitive edge in today's market. Reflecting on my own experiences, I've noticed that the most satisfying interactions often involve a seamless blend of anticipated needs and well-timed benefits, showcasing the subtle power of behavioral science in action.

How Important Is Accreditation for a PGDM Programme?
It is needless to mention the importance of a PGDM programme in today’s world. This postgraduate management diploma programme carries significant weight in propelling one toward career advancement. However, pursuing a non-accredited PGDM programme holds no value. Since, PGDM programmes are offered by autonomous institutions, having different types of accreditation is essential. Hence, when researching institutions, you will find that designated bodies accredit all the best PGDM college in Kolkata.
This brings us to the question- how important is accreditation for a PGDM programme? Why does prioritizing an accredited PGDM course matter? Let’s find out in the blog below.
What is a PGDM Programme?
A PGDM programme stands for Postgraduate Diploma Management programme. It is a 2-year course offered on a full-time basis, tailored to meet industry demands and cultivate industry-relevant managers.
A PGDM programme seeks to impart knowledge of business management through both classroom lectures and practical, hands-on training. Typically, these programs focus on practical learning and seek to expose students to many aspects of the real business environment through internships, industrial visits, live projects, and other activities.
PGDM programmes offer several specializations, like marketing, finance, HRM, business analytics, and so on. One can opt for any specialization based on their career goals, interest, and other factors. That said whatever your reason is for pursuing a PGDM course, it is imperative to choose an accredited program. But what is this accreditation? Let’s find it out in the next section.
What is Accreditation?
Accreditation refers to the process of "getting credited" or recognized. Authorizing authorities typically perform formal assessment and evaluation processes for educational institutions or courses that meet acceptable norms.
It is a procedure that ensures educational institutions, services, and programmes satisfy predefined standards of quality, ethics, and efficacy. Accrediting bodies can be regional, national, or international organizations known for their competence in evaluating educational quality in specific disciplines or regions, like AICTE, NAAC, NBA, UGC, AIU, etc.
Any accredited institutions or programmes demonstrate their quality and legitimacy. It enables students to make informed academic decisions while also ensuring that their degrees or certificates are regarded as valid by businesses and other institutions.
Which Type of B-Schools Can Offer PGDM Courses?
Unlike an MBA, a PGDM programme is not offered by B-Schools affiliated with universities. Rather, autonomous institutions offer PGDM courses. It is called a Postgraduate Diploma rather than a Degree since only universities regulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) are authorized to issue degrees, whereas a PGDM is classified as a Diploma programme. Usually, private business institutions accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are authorized to provide PGDM programmes.
Accreditation for a PGDM Programme: Its Importance
When talking about accreditation, it is worth shedding light on its importance for a PGDM programme. Multiple reasons make accreditation crucial for PGDM courses of which below are a few.
Quality
There are thousands of business schools throughout the country, but not all of them provide great education. So, how do you tell if a business school offers quality education? The answer is in its accreditations. The more accreditations a business school has from reputable organizations, the more it exhibits its dedication to educational excellence. Higher education educational institutions are thoroughly evaluated by accrediting authorities, like AICTE, AIU, NBA, etc., and only those that successfully meet particular criteria and requirements are accredited.
Upto Date Curriculum
Attending an accredited PGDM curriculum means you'll be learning about industry-relevant topics. Accredited PGDM programmes are frequently assessed and reviewed to make sure that the course of study is current and relevant to the industry's latest advancements, trends, and innovations. This ensures that students obtain education that is relevant to current market demands and developments.
Credibility
An accredited PGDM programme is more likely to be acknowledged and valued in the market. Because accreditations represent quality, students who attend an accredited PGDM education demonstrate that they have completed a high-quality curriculum that is in line with current market trends. This, in turn, increases their employability and job opportunities.
Furthermore, the legitimacy of an accredited PGDM programme can be extremely beneficial when seeking admission to further programs such as Ph.D., or an MBA in a foreign business school.
Continuous Improvement
Accreditation agencies conduct official reviews of higher education institutions regularly, making it critical for these institutions to maintain a consistent level of quality. As a result, they are dedicated to ongoing improvement and working to improve the excellent education they deliver.
Employer Recognition
Accreditation evaluations undertaken by different bodies generally assess components such as educational standards, teaching approaches, facilities, faculty credentials, and more. Only institutes that meet the standards for all parameters are accredited.
Participating in an accredited PGDM programme, therefore, demonstrates a high level of management education among candidates, preparing them to become industry-relevant leaders and managers. As a result, candidates' trustworthiness improves dramatically in the view of employers during the placement process.
The Bottomline
In conclusion, accreditations for a PGDM programme are critical. It guarantees the standard, recognition, and relevancy of postgraduate management programmes. Choosing an accredited PGDM course can increase the value of the education and qualifications achieved, thereby improving employment chances in the realm of management.
