In sales, there is this quote that you eat with your eyes first. If the item or the sale itself is appealing, the customer will indulge further. That goes for food, cars or even a president or king.

Looking the part is critical to the way HUMANS think and how HUMANS go about making a selection or a choice or a decision

Now, there is a difference between a selection a choice and a decision - for HUMANS

A selection is the process of picking one item from a group of more than one. A selection can be motivated by almost anything like the time of day or the date. A selection can also be made randomly like a random selection

A choice is different from a selection in that it incorporates a comparison of sorts; where one option is compared to another option and the options are weighed, and a choice is made. If the choice is unsatisfactory, then another choice is made. Choice indicates options.

A decision, however, eliminates options. By that I mean, when a decision is made, all other options are cut off - a decision calculates the best choice and then eliminates all other options. Like when a student decides which college they will attend. Once the decision is made, all other options are cut off.

These are human strategies which help us navigate survival and growth. From these, you may be wondering which strategy does God use: selection, choice or decision theory?

The answer is none of these. For God’s ways are not our ways.

Do you know the song Dean wrote as a private birthday present to Jerry? Well, there was that blessed word that you don't quite understand what it is towards the end... when Dean sings "Will I marry Motl??" It seems Motl really says it. But what does it mean?? I started searching on Google and do you know what I found? Motl is a word of Yiddish origin, and is an exclusively male name. The meaning of Motl is "sweet" or "honey", evoking positive and affectionate connotations. It is a name that can be perceived as endearing and charming, reflecting a kind and good nature. And who would Dean have learned this word from if not from Jerry? So basically Dean is saying "I'm going to marry my sweet, loving boyfriend" . BOY. I repeat that Motl is a MALE name. for all that I love Ghosts, I've been getting a very different kind of joy out of watching uploads of a very, very similar show on youtube - The Ghosts of Motley Hall.

Like, a setup where the ghosts actually mostly like each other from the off, so that a huge chunk of the dialogue just goes towards establishing more and more of their meandering, idiosyncratic shared history (especially because the budget was clearly about £1.50 so they have to establish most things through dialogue)... that has its own kind of charm.

October 19th, 2023 - DaR, PIU XX

WE'RE HERE!!! IN THE HOME OF THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!!! it was so surreal that i almost couldn't believe it... finally actually being in the state of my very first tournament... and i sure as hell was gonna make it a good one!!!

we were already here and with little to do before my actual events started, so i went with my family to the rock & roll hall of fame and had a ton of fun there!! was way bigger than we both could've imagined, yet it was filled to the brim with the coolest stuff i've seen in a museum. 10/10 experience, wish i brought back a souvenir but the gift shop was waaay too expensive discounting what we had already paid for the entrance fee.

that was all i really know to do in ohio, so we went on our way first to eat, then to the hotel, and finally... we arrived at the event hotspot. round 1 great lakes mall, where they were already advertising the DDR tournament happening this weekend!

i arrived at the hotspot and was... overwhelmed at first! so many people and so much noise, and it seemed like every cab was occupied. so while i was there, i warmed up with some DaR, feeling the most out of place that i could be even though everyone else here was a fellow rhythm gamer.

after this, i wandered around some more and met some other friends that i didn't know were even coming, like zelenk/voltiva!!! and lolitsme from SCM!!! after meeting and greeting, i still wandered around for stuff to do and found that the PIU cab was completely unoccupied! only being worked on for the stream setup and the like. so i gave it a set in order to warm up for my tourney set tomorrow evening... looking good so far!

i managed to stick around and watch most of the ddr challenges event with voltiva since there wasn't much else to do other than wait in card lines, but it looked SO FUN. i really need to sign up early next time if i even get the chance... but after that, it was time to head to the hotel and rest up, since i had a massive day ahead of me that i didn't want hindered by jet lag! until tomorrow then, see you in the next post!

Anthony Davis / Kyle Motl / Kjell Nordeson — Vertical Motion (Astral Spirits)

One lesson to be derived from this album is that there may be some gold forgotten in your closet. Given the time gap between the recording of this album in 2018 and its release in 2023, plus the Bandcamp page confession by one of the participating musician that it spent some years on a shelf before it made the transition from raw recordings to finished album, one suspects that this album is a product of that moment when COVID confinement compelled people to finally give the storage closet a good cleaning. The vinyl supply-chain disaster can’t have helped. But while no one should be naïve enough to believe that you can’t keep a good album down — c’mon, what do you think this is, a just world? Neither should you ignore the fact that this is a superb recording by an unlikely ensemble.

Between his teaching and his opera composing, Anthony Davis has not made improvisational piano playing a top priority for eons. But it would appear that he’s open to playing with his students. Bassist Kyle studied composition with Davis at University of California-San Diego, and while he was there, he also played in some bands with Kjell Nordeson. Folks with long memories and big free jazz CD collections might recall the Swedish-born percussionist’s work with Mats Gustafsson and Ken Vandermark. But more recently, he’s settled in California and gotten a PhD from UC-San Diego. Davis was part of his doctoral committee.

The three musicians played together several times, but it was Motl who organized the session and selected the material, which includes two of his compositions, one by Davis, and a couple of free pieces. The resulting music doesn’t slot easily into any genre. There’s a precision of pitch that one might associate with classical music, a flowing lyricism that derives from jazz, and a readiness to create with complete spontaneity that is usually the province of free improvisation. Davis’ contributions are thoughtful and lucid, but also confidently spontaneous. Motl reconciles virtuoso bowing with a rough, physical attack that exploits the fact that he’s playing a big, resonant box of wood. And Nordeson, who sticks to the drum kit, is as adept at close shadowing as he is at channeling energy. Their interactions have so much grace and mystery that they sails right over stylistic boundaries while evoking the otherness that art provides as a tool for tolerating the world we live in.
