Day 28 of #30daysofbiking. I'm glad that the sun came out this morning to warm things up a little. I headed to Teepee Tonka Park. The viaduct is often photographed in Faribault. The Straight River flows from here and joins with the Cannon River just down the road near Alexander Park. It's such a pretty spot. Day 22 of #30daysofbiking. It was a gorgeous day to bike in Owatonna! We parked at Mineral Springs Park and took the city bike trail over to Darts Park and then to Maple Creek Park. The trail follows Maple Creek and there are several bridges to cross and beautiful views of the creek. Mineral Springs Park features a really nice disc golf course, playground, horseshoe pits, and picnic areas. Darts Park features tennis courts, a ball diamond, playground and picnic area. The ride from one end of the trail and back totaled around two miles making it a great ride for families with younger children. Princess Owatonna, featured in this sculpture, was said to have been brought back to health from the waters of the springs that flow in this park. I headed to Owatonna today to ride the Muckle Trail. It begins at Moorehouse Park and heads north along the Straight River. As you begin, you will pass a beautiful mural on the side of the Straight River Sports building. The cool thing about this trail is that there are several bridges and underpasses to go over and under. The trail is only about a mile long and then it turns into the Wildung/Ihlenfeld Trail. This mile + gravel trail continues along the Straight River and goes past the city's municipal treatment plant. It then enters into a riparian woodland along the river. The trail here is a bit sandy in a few spots but still passable. Again there are steel bridges to cross and there are many trees surrounding the trail. Day 8 of #30daysofbiking I headed to Northfield today to ride the Mill Towns Trail, which connects Dundas to Northfield. There is lots to see and the trail and I think kids would especially like it. I started my ride by the Northfield Dog Park and rode over the steel bridge that goes over the Cannon River. The trail goes through Sechler Park, where you will find several baseball diamonds, a picnic area, and a playground. As you pass the ball diamonds, you also pass Post Cereal and several train tracks with many rail cars. After the ball diamonds, you head into a rural landscape, complete with a farm with a few grazing beef cattle on pasture. Then the trail heads into a woods for a bit before you reach Dundas. At Dundas, check out the ruins of the Archibald Mill, which once employed 100 men before it burned down in 1892. The trail ended in Dundas, so I turned around and rode back to the steel bridge. Here a city of Northfield trail begins and heads under Highway 3. On the other side of Highway 3, you will find Lions Park, which has a playground and tennis courts. If you head south on the trail for a bit, you will find the Northfield Area Veterans Memorial Park.
