MacDonald Creek/Summit Lake
Summit Lake, elevation 710 m (2329 ft), is a lake in the Central Interior of British Columbia, Canada, located to the north of the city of Prince George. It is the namesake of the community of the same name, which lies alongside the John Hart Highway to the south of the community of McLeod Lake (Fort McLeod). It is at the head of the Crooked River, which flows north to McLeod Lake.
Summit Lake is situated at the divide between the Fraser and Peace basins and so is at the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. As such, it is also the location of the prominence col for Pico de Orizaba, in relation to Denali, meaning also that it is one of the lowest locations along the Continental Divide of North America north of Mexico.

[ The skull is mounted on a custom steel armature, which allows for it to be seen all the way around. ]
"After seven years of work, the best preserved and most complete triceratops skull coming from Canada — also known as the "Calli" specimen — is on display for the first time since being found in 2014 at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alta. A museum news release calls the specimen "unique" because of where it was discovered, the age of the rock around it, and how well it was preserved. Following the floods that tore through Alberta about 10 years ago, the Royal Tyrrell staff were engaged in flood mitigation paleontology work when the triceratops skull was discovered in 2014. Triceratops fossils are rare in Canada. This skull was found in the foothills of southwestern Alberta — an area where dinosaur fossils in general are uncommon — and nicknamed "Calli" after Callum Creek, the stream where it was discovered. Transported via helicopter in giant, heavy chunks, the skull and most of the jaw pieces were extracted over the course of a month in 2015. The rest of the triceratops' skeleton was not found. Roaming the earth roughly 68 to 69 million years ago, the museum says this skull was buried in stages, evident by the fossilization process.  "Paleontologists know this because the specimen was found in different rock layers, and the poorly preserved horn tips suggest they were exposed to additional weathering and erosion," reads a museum blog about the triceratops skull.  "The rest of the skeleton likely washed away," noting that the lower jaws were found downstream. From 2016 to 2023, Royal Tyrrell technician Ian Macdonald spent over 6,500 hours preparing this fossil, removing over 815 kilograms of rock that encased the skull. This triceratops skull is the largest skull ever prepared at the museum and its third largest on display."

Community members, including a local school board and the mayor, are mourning the loss of a local couple, two days after police say their landlord shot and killed them outside their Stoney Creek home.
Carissa MacDonald, 27, and Aaron Stone, 28, are the names of the couple who died, CBC News has learned.
CBC News confirmed the identities of the victims through family members and employers who declined to comment on the record.
The couple were engaged and lived at 322 Jones Rd., police said. The house sits in a quiet area north of Barton Street in Stoney Creek.
Stone was an apprentice electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, according to his Facebook page. MacDonald worked at the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board for the past three-and-a-half years and was a Mohawk College graduate, according to her LinkedIn profile. [...]

What I read in November
This month felt simultaneously like it went on forever, and like it slipped by. I was very busy. I hardly got any reading done compared to my usual. But I did have a lot of fun.
The Jewel of Seven Stars, Bram Stoker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Terror, Dan Simmons ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hannibal: The Military Genius who Almost Conquered Rome, Eve MacDonald ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ nf
Luna, Ian McDonald ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hoka! Hoka! Hoka!, Poul Anderson & Gordon R Dickson ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dracula, Bram Stoker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cicero: The Life & Times of Rome's Greatest Politician, Anthony Everitt ⭐️⭐️⭐️nf
The Worst Journey in the World, Apsley Cherry-Garrard ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️nf
METAtropolis: Cascadia Anthology ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Haunting of Willow Creek, Sara Crocoll Smith ⭐️
Journey to the Center of the Earth, Jules Verne ⭐️⭐️
METAtropolis: Green Space Anthology ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I started off the month with a Bram Stoker novel that I'd never read before, The Jewel of the Seven Stars, and as I always am, when I read Stoker's work, I was surprised by how bold and action-forward the story was, while still having a bunch of atmosphere, and, of course, time for a sensitive, sweet solicitor to fall head over heels in love. I don't know why I'm always surprised by how good Stoker's writing is, he's popular for good reason!
I also reread Dracula for the who-knows-how-many-th time, and was struck by how current all of the action feels, even though it's using the epistolary form, which I often feel can lack in oomph since, necessarily, the action has already concluded in such a way that leaves the characters able to sit down and compose a letter or journal entry about it all. Dracula really feels like any of the characters might be in peril, and the switching between POVs really highlights how anyone could be lost at any moment, and the story would carry on from other pens. The scene where Mina falls asleep over her diary, and then it jumps to Seward describing what they saw happen to her gave me the shivers! And the logs of the voyage of the Demeter were a real spook-fest.
The Terror is one that I've been wanting to get around to for a while, and I was happy to devour it. This must be the second or third Dan Simmons book that I've read, and each one has been very different, but all of them are so striking and so well-written. At this point, I'm probably just going to try and read everything he's ever written. The atmosphere, the creeping dread, the deft and visceral horror. It's all so well done it's fantastic.
Stars awarded at my whim.

Golf Digest's Top Six Courses in Illinois
Tumblr media
Golf Digest, one of the world's leading golf publications, has scored and ranked the top courses in the United States every year since 1966. For its 2023 list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses, the publication sought input from more than 1,800 panelists, who played and evaluated each course based on criteria such as conditioning and character, shot options, and aesthetics. In compiling this list, Golf Digest also creates rankings of the best courses in each state.
Illinois is among the premier states in the country for golf, with six courses ranked in Golf Digest's 2023 America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses list. It also has two courses in the Second 100 Greatest list. According to Golf Digest, the state’s 11th-best course, Beverly Country Club in Chicago, is superior to the top golf courses in major cities including San Diego, Miami, and Houston.
The Chicago Golf Club (CGC) in Wheaton is the state's best course and the 13th best in the country, according to Golf Digest. The club is home to the first 18-hole course in the United States, built by renowned course architect C.B. Macdonald and opened in 1893. CGC has been first in Golf Digest's state rankings every year since 2011 and has been included on America's 100 Greatest list every year since 1971. It has remained relatively unchanged since Seth Raynor, a former surveyor and engineer under Macdonald, redesigned the course in 1923.
The Chicago Golf Club has hosted several notable tournaments since its inception, including the U.S. Open in 1987, 1900, and 1911. More recently, it hosted the Walker Cup, an amateur competition involving teams of American and United Kingdom players, in 2005. It also hosted the 2018 U.S. Senior Women's Open and is slated to host the U.S. Women's Open in 2033 and the Walker Cup in 2036.
Previously ranked as the third-best course in the state, Shoreacres Golf Club in Lake Bluff moved up to No. 2 in Golf Digest's 2023 rankings. Also designed by Raynor, the course features fascinating topography and perhaps the most unique stretch of three holes (11, 12, and 13) on any golf course in the 100 Greatest list. The private course opened in 1921 and has been among the top-five courses in the state since 2017.
Butler National Golf Club in Oak Brook dropped back one spot to No. 3 in the statewide rankings. Created by former PGA Tour player George Fazio, the course features 10 holes with forced carries over water. It was once the permanent host site of the Western Open, but it relinquished its hosting duties in 1990 after refusing to change its men-only policy. Butler National is one of four clubs in the Chicago area that still doesn't offer membership to women.
Canyata Golf Club, Medinah Country Club Course 3, and the Olympia Fields Country Club’s North course are the other three Illinois courses on America's 100 Greatest list. Canyata, in Marshall, was created by developer and energy executive Jerry Forsythe, who wanted to transform 300 acres of his family property into a three-hole golf course. Over time, with the help of architect Bob Lohmann, he built the area into an 18-hole course with artificial creeks, waterscaped ponds, and sophisticated bunkers.
Medinah Country Club Course 3 has hosted several major tournaments since 1949. These include the 2012 Ryder Cup, 2006 PGA Championship, and 1990 U.S. Open. It is slated to host the Presidents Cup in 2026. Olympia Fields Country Club’s North course, meanwhile, hosted the 2023 BMW Championship, 2017 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, and 2003 U.S. Open, among other notable events.

From there it flows north through the mountains. Northeast of the village of Toad River (near Mile 422 of the Alaska Highway), the river joins the Toad River River below the Toad River Hot Springs Provincial Park. 12 km from the mouth the Racing River the British Columbia Highway (Alaska Highway) crosses the Racing River and runs a few miles downstream on the right bank before the highway leads into the valley of the right tributary of the MacDonald Creek.

A Community Seeks to Prepare for Emergencies
With fire season upon us and summer like weather persisting into autumn, residents of Somoma Oaks gathered to meet with Somoma Valley Fire District Capt. Ben Gulson on Oct. 21.
Tumblr media
As posted in the Somoma Valley Sun Longtime residents, Ardath MacDonald and Jude Cameron coordinated the meeting and introduced Capt. Gulson and his team to about 30 people who were in attendance that Friday afternoon at the Somoma Oaks Clubhouse.
Gulson was pleased that Somoma Oaks residents had gathered to revive and restore their SCOPE - Somoma Citizens Organization to Prepare for Emergencies program.
“Emergency preparedness is very important,” said Capt. Gulson. “I can’t emphasize this enough” He also pointed out that having a community or neighborhood that can support and help one another in times of emergency or disaster is vital. “Emergency crews won’t be able to get out to you right away, he said, in the event of a disaster, so if you can handle things that are basic and not life threatening that would be empowering for you and help us too.”
Basic things according to Gulson are “knowing where the gas is and how to shut it off.” “Knowing that if needed there is “at least 25 gallons of water in a water heater” and that water could be used for bathing if running water isn’t readily available in an emergency.
Capt. Gulson who specializes in Disaster Preparedness at Somoma Valley Fire Authority District encouraged residents to be prepared and to take the time to get acquainted with one another. “Just knowing how many people are on your block or in your neighborhood is essential to emergency response in times of disaster or emergencies,” he added.
Something as common as a power outage can really put a neighborhood to the test. Having a neighbor nearby to help with something as simple like opening a garage door, could very well be an important task as seniors might not have the strength to lift or maneuver a garage door opener system once the power goes out.

Cameron and MacDonald who organized the meeting that afternoon explained. “We initially put SCOPE together over 11 years ago and since COVID-19 we realized this needs to be updated and revised.”
Cameron pointed out that Sonoma Oaks is among at least seven mobile home parks in Somoma and the adjacent Agua Caliente/El Verano area.
These parks have mostly seniors as residents and these mobile home parks are in places were there is a wooded path or dense foliage.
Getting emergency service vehicles into narrow roads and tight circular street cul d’ sacs is difficult. “Having a resident or neighborhood group be proactive about getting dead leaves/brush cleared away and trees trimmed on a regular basis is a much needed safety measure,” said Gulson.
Cameron also noted that getting mobile home park management to help is sometimes difficult.
Gulson agreed as he mentioned that mobile home parks like Somoma Oaks are adjacent to creeks and open spaces that belong to the county. “Getting the appropriate authorities to help with maintenance can be daunting,” he said. This is why neighborhood cooperation is essential to help ensure safety.
In addition to the mobile home communities, there are 57 Assisted Living facilities in the Somoma area. According to the latest statistics, seniors make up 9 percent of the population of Sonoma County. Seniors as defined by the Somoma County Department of Health Services are people age 75 and older. Seniors are among the vulnerable in the overall community.
Several of the mobile home parks and Assisted Living facilities are in unincorporated areas of the county. Sonoma County’s unincorporated areas are home to 146,739 residents. That’s about 30 percent of the total population.
A significant number of these individuals live in locations that are very rural and geographically remote. The threat of fire is often present, especially as hot weather continues. Which, is why Capt. Gulson was persistent about the importance of neighborhood cooperation.
Sonoma City Council member Madolyn Agrimonti attended the meeting. She told the Sonoma Oaks residents that “things regarding mobile homes have shifted.”
While mobile home parks are governed by the State of California under The Mobilehome Residency Law (the MRL), each county and local authority must handle issues such as zoning permits, rent stabilization ordinances, etc.
Ann Colichidas, chapter rep for the Golden State Manufactured-home Owners League was also in attendance that Friday and said that GSMOL has been working hard to safeguard the rights of mobile home owners and tenants who are often ignored or mistreated by mobile home park management.
With a County as large as Sonoma, deferring important housing concerns in the hands of local authorities and bureaucracies can be overwhelming. “This is why GSMOL was formed,” said Colichidas. “GSMOL has for 60 years, helped mobile home owners/residents advocate for what they need. Especially for establishing something like SCOPE.”
Agrimonti agreed, pledging her support as she told the residents. “I am here! I’m not going away.”
Pleased with the turnout for the meeting Cameron wants to have a SCOPE program in every mobile home park and senior community in the county.
She said afterwards. “It’s important that we revive our emergency preparedness efforts, because being a senior in a mobile home park feels isolating. It’s as if as a people we are ‘put out to pasture’ said Cameron, as the old saying goes; out of the way -out of sight and out of mind, to some people perhaps. But we are here, she said emphatically. And, we are still members of the larger Somoma community. And we want to ensure that our quality of life remains in tact, just like everyone else.”
