(yes, that’s a Crown Japan 6” colour TV running a movie via digital stream)

Screenshots + clip from a rig I finally got running this week. Streaming a full HD film through a 1980s-era mini CRT using an iMac as the source and the Crown TV as a second screen. Grain, glow, ghosting — all present and correct.

What you’re seeing:

A digital movie (via streaming service) downscaled and output to a Crown Japan 6” colour television

Photos taken mid-playback — complete with scanlines, soft bloom, and that soft edge warble you only get from analog displays

Desktop and browser from the iMac peeking through in one shot — reminder this whole thing’s being routed from a modern machine

Rig Details / Adapters Used: 🔌 iMac (Thunderbolt 3/USB-C) ⬇️ USB-C → HDMI adapter ⬇️ HDMI → RCA/AV converter box (powered, with selectable NTSC/PAL output) 🔌 RCA cables into the AV input on the Crown TV (UHF/VHF, analog input only) 🧠 macOS in extended desktop mode — dragging video windows across onto the CRT like it’s 1998 again

The result is a kind of digital séance — pulling the sharpness of now through the fuzz and hum of then. Glorious, distorted, alive.

Back in the early 2000s, I turned my dead Macintosh SE computer, which had been collecting dust in the basement for a decade, into a Macquarium—a homemade aquarium inside the shell of an old one-piece Mac. I had it set up at work and it was a lot of fun; everyday, the entire office would stop by to say hi to the current fish, usually a Betta named Beta V1, V2, etc. It took a lot of effort though—cleaning and doing water replacement in the middle of a work environment was always a messy, awkward affair. Eventually our office moved and I used that as a good excuse to bring the Macquarium to an end…and it returned to collect more dust in the basement. Now my old Mac has been reinvented again, this time as a Macterrarium, which I don’t think is a thing (yet). The aquarium has been filled with low-maintenance plants, retrofitted with LED lights since it’s dark in there, and will live in my beloved’s new office. Not sure it will work, but we’ll give it a try. It was fun to pull the old Mac off the shelf and check it out again—if you look closely inside the shell, signatures of the entire Mac development team are in the molding, including Steve Jobs.

UPDATE: She's now had the Macterrarium for about nine months in her office and it's been a hit. Only one plant died; the rest have thrived inside the computer, and apparently it's been a great conversational icebreaker for people nervous that they're visiting the boss's office).

buuuut NOT @tomsdesk... A little upgrade to the living room, last week I bought a #Besta TV unit from @ikeauk! The old unit was 150cm, but I think the 55” TV suited a bit bigger of a stand... so this new one is 180cm and I got the legs from Amazon 🎊 Love the minimal feel of it, and how versatile the new unit is! IKEA consistently doing a great job of their furniture, here- and thinking out of the box. Big fan of this #QLED range from @samsunguk and those narrow bezels 😍 It’s a Q60T, if you’re wondering! It gives you an absolutely stunning picture when watching in 4K HDR with thanks to its HDR10+ and Dual LED. The new Tizen OS looks so much sleeker in the dark blue compared to the last white version, too.
