Alright, some more recommendations for the end of #TransRightsReadathon! Here are some standalones by trans authors I've enjoyed.  These books mostly fall under the sff umbrella except for Confessions of the Fox which is meta-historical fiction.
They are beautiful, heartfelt, creative explorations of humanity, of our drive for connection, self-understanding, love, and survival. So many of these books look at history, personal, and community, aaaand they are filled with complicated, lovable, engaging characters. All of these books gave me something from a soft place to rest to a new way of viewing the world we live in.
Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Most of these authors have other books that are also wonderful. Annnd as always there are so many other fabulous books by and about people who are trans.
One Last Stop by Casey McQuistion
An Unkindess of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

"The thing about me is, I let things go. I let people go. I don't know how to hang on to them; I try, but I hold too tight or not tight enough or something in between and they go. They always go."

Like the best anecdotes, Magic for Liars is hilarious in the moment and tragic if you think about it for too long. It also knows exactly how to make fun of the fact that it takes place in a school for magical adolescents.

I stood in the doorway, watching my sister speak about a theorem I'd never heard of, and tried to recognize the girl I remembered in the woman she'd become.

I don't know how to feel about Magic for Liars. I liked the style and it held my interest throughout, but the ending left me kinda like:

best books of 2023 #9
Magic For Liars- Sarah Gailey
These are books that I read in 2023, not necessarily ones published in 2023. This list is entirely subjective based on my enjoyment.
Honestly, this is one of the best concepts for a book. A murder mystery in a magic school should honestly sell itself. The mystery had so many twists and always kept me on the edge of my seat and the worldbuilding around the school was great. It was really refreshing to see a magic school that felt a lot like a regular high school, just with added magic, instead of rewriting the whole experience as if teenagers or teachers would be entirely different just because they had magic. Then, on top of that, the interpersonal drama and just,,, complexity was really well-written. Some of the interactions felt hard to read, or I hated the decisions that some of the characters were making, but I think that was ultimately because it was all incredibly human.

Tiny Navajo Listens: Magic for Liars
Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey - an #audiobook about magic and the world it lives in and how while different theatrics, nearly always the same humans are at the center of it. #review #fantasy #listening
Hello everyone! The winter seems to have fully showed up now, with below freezing temps for us. As with my philosophy, or at least preference, for times like this is if the weather is going to be this cold, then it should have the decency to snow properly! But nope, just a small dusting of dry snow that has now vanished. Eh, what can you do? Anyway, I got a new review for you today, so let’s get…

WOTN: Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey
Magic for Liars is the latest novel by Sarah Gailey, and it is out of this world. Not literally, though it is a world full of magic, wonders, and murders; oh wait, one of those shouldn’t be here, should it? This is a standalone novel, but there is so much to it. It’s as if Sarah Gailey took the world of Harry Potter and mashed it with a thrilling tale of a private investigator. It’s magical,…

Got a little over 40% through Magic for Liars and suddenly had to throw the book down last night because wtf protag? Look, I clearly have no objection to protagonists who lie their asses off (also see Locke Lamora, Lymond, and frequently Wimsey) but they're actually good at it 😭
But I'll probably come back to this one when I'm in a more generous-to-other-people's-stupid-decisions mood because it's actually really excellent (the whole sister relationship by itself is worth the price of admission, imo, and even if the protagonist is annoying me, she's annoying and making extremely stupid decisions in a very believable and internally consistent kind of way. Also it's a really interesting take on a magic high school). I just had to yell about her for a minute.
-
(there might also be something to the pattern that, with the exception of Lavender House, I really cannot get into books about private eyes. Not even when they're urban fantasy novels by Alexis Hall. I think it might be the protagonist's sense of isolation, or maybe the literal-or-metaphorical film of cigarette residue that coats everything in sticky yellow nicotine? Idk. Something for me to think about)
