Nos. 13 et 14. — Robe en soie brochée sur chaîne, fond bleu broché or et rose (Dos et devant). Corsage ouvert devant sur chemisette de tulle brodé, et derrière, croisé en cœur sur la même chemisette. Cravate Mercure en mousseline de soie noire. Manches demi-plates à ballon écrasé, avec longues manches de tulle brodé. Jupe à godets avec ruché semblable dans le bas.

Nos. 13 and 14. — Brocaded silk dress on chain, blue background brocaded with gold and pink (back and front). Bodice open in front on an embroidered tulle shirt, and behind, crossed in a heart on the same shirt. Mercury tie in black silk muslin. Half-flat crushed balloon sleeves, with long embroidered tulle sleeves. Godet skirt with similar ruching at the bottom.

Métrage: 17 mètres soie brochée sur chaîne.

fine morning – read a little of Murray – breakfast at 9 5/.. had the fur merchant about 9 ½ or later and Mrs. Howard till 11 – then meant to have gone out to call on Mrs. Fischer but about 11 ½ came Mr. Camidge, our clergyman here, and sat till 1 ½ - nice respectable good sort of man – talked over Mrs. Howard and the price we pay – Mr. C- had heard we were going to leave Mrs. H- I mentioned all that had passed on the subject chez les dames des enfans trouvés and with Mr. Mark, and that we liked Mrs. Howard better the more we saw of her, and had in fact no great thought of leaving her – simply wanted to know whether we paid more than we ought to pay – talked of roads, people etc. etc. no secrets here – everybody asks and tells about the most private domestic affairs – Mr. C- knows little about the country confined to his church here – has been as far as Nijeney – will get us information about

No. 6. — Manteau fantaisie, plissée sur les épaules tout autour, avec col plissé montant et gros nœud à l'encolure. Deux longs pans, garnis de chinchilla, retombent bas sur la jupe.

Chapeau de feutre rond, orné par un nœud alsacien noir et blanc avec aigrette colonel au milieu.

No. 6. — Fancy coat, pleated on the shoulders all around, with high pleated collar and large bow at the neckline. Two long tails, trimmed with chinchilla, hang low on the skirt.

Round felt hat, decorated with a black and white Alsatian knot with colonel egret in the middle.

A l’époque, João Gilberto est devenu un adepte du yoga, il médite. Wendy Carlos photographie les éclipses, et ils adorent l’astrologie. Pour l’occasion, João Gilberto y a écrit Valsa, sous titré « comme sont beaux les yogis ». Trois minutes et dix-neuf secondes de « Da da/dadadadada … », l’une de ses douze compositions toutes nourries d’onomatopées. Le « disque blanc » est exceptionnel.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Il fait partie du « hold-up » pratiqué sur son œuvre, selon les termes de sa fille Bebel Gilberto, rockeuse turbulente des années « sida » à Rio refugiée dans l’East Village, à New York, où elle a inventé une bossa « électronique » dès son premier album, Tanto Tempo, succès planétaire en 2001. En 2017, Bebel Gilberto a fait placer son père sous curatelle partielle. Reclus, amaigri, criblé de dettes et objet de neuf procès en cours, le « Dieu » de la bossa » avait poursuivi une inespérée descente aux enfers, laissant des dettes et des contrats tordus en héritage. Mise en cause, Claudia Faissol. En 2004 cette « socialite » connue à Rio, fan et journaliste, suit João Gilberto au Japon pour réaliser un documentaire. Elle a 34 ans, lui 74 ans quand naît Luiza, troisième enfant de João Gilberto. « Namorada » (petite amie) officielle, Claudia Faissol devient manageuse, signe des contrats par procuration, monte des tournées impossibles, que son compagnon annule. Jugé seul responsable en 2008, João Gilberto est interdit bancaire et condamné à une amende de 2 millions de reais (500 000 euros), qui impayée depuis, s’est alourdie des intérêts.                                                                                                                                                    João Gilberto menait également un procès complexe depuis 1997 contre la maison de disque EMI (propriétaire d’Odéon). Il s’insurgeait contre la remastérisation de ses trois premiers albums, Chega de Saudade (1959), O amor, o sorriso e a flor (1960) et João Gilberto (1961), fondateurs de la bossa-nova. Et pire encore à ses yeux, en 1988, pour le soixante-quinzième anniversaire d’Odéon, la maison de disque britannique avait publié O Mito, un mélange de trente-huit chansons interprétées par João Gilberto entre 1959 et 1961. Les titres sont dans le désordre, le son n’y est pas. Dans un deuxième temps, l’artiste avait réclamé également la révision du taux de royalties, très bas, et le paiement de sommes dues depuis 1964, ainsi que la restitution des masters de ses enregistrements – les bandes mères.                                                                                                                                                                            En décembre 2015, le Tribunal supérieur de Justice de Brasilia donne raison au chanteur, condamnant EMI à lui payer 200 millions de reais (50 millions d’euros), un calcul jugé fantaisiste par la maison de disque, qui fait appel. João Gilberto, via Claudia Faissol, a signé un contrat avec la banque brésilienne Opportunity, propriété d’un habile financier bahianais, sous la forme d’un prêt, garanti par la cession de 60 % de ses droits. Eloigné de « ses démons » sous la pression de ses proches, dont le musicien Caetano Veloso et sa fille Bebel, João Gilberto tentait de retrouver sa santé et sa raison. Et en toutes occasions, même affaibli, celui que ses comparses de bossa-nova et d’errances bohèmes à Rio appelaient Joãozinho (petit João) décochait un regard futé, souriait, se moquait. Car il était vivant. Fine morning – Rather hazy but less so than of late and Fahrenheit 61º and breakfast now at 9 1/4 – In about 3/4 hour and then called in Gross and his wife – I told him of his giving me notice yesterday to leave us – Answer – No! He meant nothing at all! I repeated what he said, and turning to Grotza said I did not know how I could take it otherwise – Of course, she said nothing but I think she was surprised at hearing what had really passed which I said, if it meant nothing, was impertinence – The business lasted an hour – 

It seems the great fault was in Finland – When I would not have the drag put on – (At the steep pitch down upon bridge) – I then said that Gross had after all put the drag on contrary to my orders and that therefore I might well turn to the coachman whether as Gross now said he was a low man or not – And desire that the drag might not be put on for anybody’s order but mine – I would not have it put on against my  orders – 

However, I said I had not intended to give warning, nor was it now my intention till the difficulties of getting them (the servants) home again were less – Gross asked if then I should give them warning as soon as I could suit myself better – I said I should certainly get rid of him as soon as I conveniently could – If I had been in Paris, I should have hesitated a moment – But that at present tho’ I would not pledge myself in any way, I had no thought of returning homewards, and did not know when I should return – However I wished to know what he really did mean, and desired to have his answer in writing – I should have one servant come from England, and it was time for me to know what to do – I could not allow to say a thing one, and say it meant nothing the next – 

Poor Grotza behaved very well – She thought we could perhaps suit ourselves in a month and she could get a place here – She would get a place here where Gross did or not - ∴[therefore] her answer is final – Poor thing – I pity her – perhaps she would be happier anywhere without G-[Gross] than with him – She said her country was anywhere – Gross began to talk as yesterday, but I soon told him I should not allow him to talk thus and mean nothing – I addressed my remarks chiefly to Grotza and told him if he would not listen quietly to what I said, he should leave the room – 

Talked some time to A-[Ann] and then wrote the above till now 11 1/2 – Out at 11 50/’’ drove to the Enfans Trouvés – There at 12 1/4 – Asked for the 2 ladies we had seen the other day – And with them in the large good comfortable salon of Madame la Directrice till 1 10/’’ – 

Explained and had up the girl who had been with the French Marchande des Modes – Nice looking girl Æt[aetatis] 18 – In consideration of having much to learn to give her 10/- per month and 2 gowns – The girl did not think she durst attempt to cut out a gown – But could make it if cut out – Could trim a cap – And comb and clean and curl hair but not dress it for a ball – A very good girl et elle a de l’esprit – Knows a few words of French and can read and write it a little – Can read and write her own language – 

The aide the Lady who speaks English asked where we were and what we paid – All astonished at the greatness of the price – Mentioned an English gentleman and his wife and a servant being boarded and lodged and living in private (a very good table) for 150/- per month!!! Off at 2 2/’’ – In a minute or 2 pass the Schlagbaum barrier and at 2 1/4 cross the river (Moskva) over pont flottant – A wide sandy strand on each side the water, and steepish pitch up from the bridge – At the palace at Kalomensky at 2 35/’’ – 

The old palace of Tartar times where Peter the Great used to be replaced by a good modern house palace simply because belonging à la couronne – Nothing worth seeing in the palace but the immediately surrounding towers and churches (2) very  picturesque – Both à la Tatar – The one nearest the palace white and arcaded round au premier, and 4 broad flights of steps leading to this arcaded portico, one on each side – The church itself, the main building, thus arcaded from this balcony – The other church in the usual style – 5 domes – Very picturesque – 

Strolled in the garden – nice gravel walks and found the clumps of Pinus Cambra that Fischer at St. P-[Petersburg] told us to see – Existing in the time of Peter I. 3 pairs of these trees – The finest of them seated (benched, round) – And certainly a very fine tree – One or 2 very large branches have been cut away and one shortened and the part of it that is left is tied up to the main stem – The habit the manner of growing – The manner of branching of the tree is like that of the oak – It does not at all affect the pyramidal – The colour is a fine dark green and there is a rich tuftiness about the foliage that is very striking – It is the finest handsomest pine I ever saw – We stood observing it some time and then went away and returned 2 or 3 times – I should think it about 10 to 12 ft.[feet] or more? In circumference at the bottom at the level of the ground – Get some of this Pinus for Shibden –

DAVID ZÉROLIVIER FISCHER

OTTO ECKMANN

SA VIE

Peintre, illustrateur et typographe allemand, Otto Eckman s’empare du mouvement Jugendstil, l’équivalent de l’Art nouveau en France. Après avoir étudié à l'école des arts appliqués de Hambourg, puis à celle de Nuremberg, l’artiste fréquenta l'Académie des beaux-arts de Munich. Véritable passionné, Eckmann arrêta la peinture et vendit ses œuvres pour pouvoir se consacrer aux arts appliqués.

À partir de 1895, il commença à travailler pour quelques grandes revues, et illustra les premières de couvertures de Jugend et Pan. Otto s’est vu attribuer plusieurs fonctions; en 1897 par exemple, il créa l'aménagement du cabinet privé du dernier grand-duc Ernest-Louis de Hesseil, mais a notamment conçu le logo pour la maison d’édition S. Fischer Verlag (encore active à ce jour).

Non seulement illustrateur et peintre, Eckmann est également typographe, et créa deux polices de caractères : la Eckmann-Schrift en 1900 et la Fette Eckmann en 1902.

Par ailleurs, l’artiste est également designer et conçoit bijoux, objets, meubles, et vêtements pour femme durant toute sa vie.

Otto Eckmann décèdera en 1902 à la suite d’une tuberculose.

SON STYLE, SON MOUVEMENT

Né en janvier 1896, le magazine Jugend est l’instigateur du mouvement Art Nouveau en Allemagne. Nommé le Jugenstil, ce mouvement est influencé par les français et les britannique. C’est un mouvement qui s’intéresse aux formes de lettres médiévales en restant étroitement lié à l’art académique traditionnel.

Dans le magazine Jugend, l’Art Nouveau figurait sur chacune des pages. La première de couverture notamment, créé en collaboration avec Otto Eckmann en avril 1896, symbolise parfaitement les idéologies du mouvement. Revue contenant majoritairement des textes satiriques et critiques, il tend à devenir nationaliste durant la Première Guerre Mondiale.

Cette première de couverture fût réalisée par Otto Eckmann, en 1896, pour le 14e numéro du magazine Jugend. Il représente une belle et jeune fille est entourée d’Iris oranges portant une couronne de fleurs blanches dans les cheveux. Totalement imprégné du mouvement du Jugendstil, cette illustration combine l’Art Nouveau, le style floral et l’inspiration japonaise.
