Hey!! You've probably been asked this before, but how did you first get into making music? ✨
honestly? i watched mario paint composer videos on youtube when i was really young and thought "i could do that" so i downloaded mpc onto my mom's computer and messed about with it. turns out i absolutely could not do that, but no one stopped me so now every 3-10 months i curse you all with the latest atrocities in musical composition :3
also i just really like the idea of music as communication; because i'm such a terrible lyricist (and speaker/wordsmith/communicator in general), i Have To pour all the meaning into the composition (more than half a millennium of cumulative western music theory has rather culturally ingrained certain feelings to certain chord progressions and that's occasionally a handy cheat code). ignore that most of the music i post is melancholy, confusion, and doctor who themes, that doesn't prove anything

When did you start making music and art? And do you have any tips for making music and art? I’m not that good at doing both of those things and i wanna improve some more and i was wondering if you could give me some advice, if not that’s fine too, ALSO, i wanna make fanart of your characters but i don’t have any place to share it on because i only have like one social media app but i don’t think you’re on there :((( sorry for making this so long btw....
No worries I probably made my answer way too long lmao. Lots of text again. Click the read more thing for all my terrible tips. As for the fanart, you can maybe link it to me via asks on here, or you can give me your Discord if you have one. I'd love to see what you do, I love getting art from others it makes me really happy 💜
Ok so uhhh ART. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember (yes, cliché). I think I started taking it more seriously when I got a drawing tablet, so 2013 or 2014? I can't remember. Some advice I can give is not to focus on every single pixel, unless you're doing pixel art. I made that mistake when I was younger; nobody is going to see 1 pixel not filled in on a 3000px canvas, it's a waste of time to bother. Focus on simple shapes first then the complex shapes when sketching and try not to do chicken-scratches, try to make continuous lines as much as possible. Here's sketches from 2016 (first) and a sketch from 2022 (second). Just looks cleaner, more dynamic and less clunky. Try practicing that when sketching, it's helped me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Experiment a lot, don't focus on one thing over and over to avoid sameness across drawings, like the same pose or faces. Like I said in a previous ask, study everything around you and the art you see, even when not actively drawing. I have so many references downloaded and things that are aesthetically pleasing or art that I really like. That helps too with inspiration and learning how to do stuff. Another thing that's helped me a lot is doing foreshortening like this, it's a simple technique and I do it a lot. And then all the things you've probably heard 1000 times, study anatomy and color theory and all that boring CRAP. Ok now the MUSIC. I started making music in 2015 (maybe before that if you count Mario Paint Composer lololol). Study MIXING and MASTERING as soon as possible. I never really did that until recently and I get mad at myself that I still can't do it well and think I'm an idiot. I can compose ok, my sound design is sexy, but my mastering is actual dogshit because I didn't learn it early and I've been struggling with it. The technical aspects of music making trip me up so much and I thought it would be okay to not bother looking into it. Learn dat shitttt cuz I didn't and I'm paying for it. It's not all about the composing. I also listen to all kinds of music all day and I try to study everything within the music, like all the instruments and sounds and how they're placed together. Even music I know I don't really like, I can listen to it and appreciate it in another way. Uhh put a limiter on your master track, especially when experimenting with shit. Be mindful of your volume, don't blow ya fucken ears out, take care of your hearing. Experiment with stuff a lot, don't be afraid to learn how to use new things and play around with them. I don't have a lot of tips when it comes to making music lol.
I hope these help somewhat, even if sorta generic. I'm not good at advice and these are just things that have helped me or I wish I knew earlier.

dolores and the giant golem!
i dont know if theres any interest in this kind of thing, but i think like, breaking down stuff is a little fun? so i might just talk about as part of the make this blog cool.
so!
Tumblr media
welcome to this songs guts! dolores and the giant golem, like a lot of cecilyparsley tracks, started with noodling on an instrument until i got a little four bar loop i liked. its on an electric piano preset from ob-xa v by arturia, but i promise i only own that stupid vst because it was gifted to me cause its too expensive but thats a whole other post.
Tumblr media
this is what the a section looks like? i dont know if this would be an a section this is just the four bars i started with. its a combination of played chords and little clicked in midi. people are like "wah dont click in midi you should play it" but like whatever man. chords were played in and little dopbadoop was clicked in. (oh also you can see i use the scale assist thing that ableton has because memorizing that junk is boring) from here i made the little bassline that just follows the chords its right here:
Tumblr media
and its nothing special it just follows the chords but its a little funny ive been using the same bass preset since i was like 18 and its just the actually wait i can show it
Tumblr media
this is literally just the default ableton wavetable that you hold on i just looked it up it doesnt come with the standard edition thats so messed up. well i bought the suite edition because im dumb but just pirate that stuff! anyway thats the bass.
the drums arent even worth talking about its a very simple four on the floor thing with ableton's dry session kit. that kit is on freakin every song ive made because its the only like indie sounding one that comes preloaded and if youre looking for new sounds synths win over drums every time.
and genuinely that is most of the song right there, my vocals are pretty dry with a small room reverb at about 20% wetness and a very small decay time, with a pretty generic compressor on it. i usually only do like one or two takes for vocals because theyre my least part of the song. the only other notable thing is there is a little solo at the end and that instrument is just the mario paint cat sound with these settings:
Tumblr media
and the way you can do this is by downloading something called a soundfont and playing it as an instrument with this plugin which is free! even if you dont use it in music i highly recc looking into soundfonts just cause they're fun. the mario paint one i used is right here and its just all the funny sounds that came with the composer. theyre nice ones to sprinkle into music.
so thats the song! feel free to send asks about it but its genuinely just fun to talk about sorry this post is so long

Cave Story - A Look Back
First off, welcome to my first major post on here! I hope you enjoy yourself! Feel free to reply, share your experiences with this lovely game!
To begin, we need to go back a bit. Back to 2004. 14 year old Gwyn is searching the internet for cool games, and has found a game with enticing graphics, incredibly high user ratings, and no one seems to be able to say anything bad about this game... A few hours later, young Gwyn is utterly transfixed by this wonderfully designed game. Unable to put the game down, they make it to an area called "Outer Wall". A hauntingly beautiful and calming song is playing, clouds are racing past in the background, a green-haired man is standing next to a dragon hatchling. The soft blue tones, lit by the moon and stars... It was a moment that immediately struck me, and stuck with me to this day. Honestly, it feels like years of me playing indie games wouldn't have happened without the memories I shared just now. That game's name is Cave Story.
Tumblr media
If you've been playing indie games, or if you're even tangentially aware of indie games, you've likely heard of Cave Story. The title originally debuted in December of 2004, as a very niche freeware download. I remember stumbling upon the game on an old freeware gaming site, back before "proper" distribution services like Itch.io or Steam existed. The game was quirky, cute, challenging, and the music immediately wormed its way into my head nigh-permanently.
Tumblr media
"Well Gwyn, what's so good about the game, exactly?" How kind of you to serendipitously ask me a question like that to use as a segue! Cave Story is a perfect example of a very simple set of mechanics, jumping and shooting, done in superlative form. It's often likened to Mega Man or Metroid when using a shorthand description of the game, and those are definitely apt. If you took the tight controls and satisfying sounds and effects of Mega Man, then mashed those into the exploratory and mostly freeform gameplay of Metroid, you'd have something very close to Cave Story. Personally, the best thing about the game is the overall feel. The gradual acceleration and deceleration of the main character, and the floatiness of the jumps lends to a bit of a learning curve upon starting the game. However, once you've mastered maneuvering, you'll find yourself slipping in between enemy shot patterns, and laying on the suppressing fire effortlessly. As you're blowing the cutesy enemies away, they burst like piñatas into prizes! Extra health and ammo for your missile launcher, or most importantly, experience triangles! (Affectionately called “EXP Doritos” personally.)
Speaking of experience, Cave Story has a very interesting mechanic revolving around levelling up your guns (with a max level of 3) as you acquire them! Cool! If you get hit, though, your gun will lose experience and even level down, losing power! Oh no! This set of mechanics adds a sense of depth that incentivizes not getting hit, aside from the obvious incentive of not dying.

So the game feels good to play, but tactile feel isn't the only important aspect in the overall presentation! The graphics and sound are also incredibly noteworthy, with one side feeding wonderfully into the other. Firing your weapons, hearing the punchy sounds, seeing the cartoonishly large bullets, and the abundance of particle effects surrounding the explosions... It's a wholly satisfying facet of the game that only serves to raise up the already-impressive package of the game!
Music is a massive driving force for making memories. Good and bad, memories can be painted more vividly with sound. From the iconic first few notes from Super Mario Bros' Overworld Theme, to Sonic's Green Hill Zone... All games that have stuck themselves steadfast in my mind have all had strikingly catchy and well-composed soundtracks that I will generally be found humming when I'm out and about. Cave Story is no exception to this. The music is upbeat and eclectic, with a broad range of emotions to invoke for any given moment. One of the (presumed) antagonists, Balrog, has a dopey theme befitting of his less-than-competent nature. The poor guy (toaster?) tries his best, though. I will say "Mischievous Robot", the theme for the Egg Corridor level, is probably one of my favorite level themes in the game. It's a high tempo, energizing song, and I always find myself trying to run and shoot a little faster because of that song... Which doesn't always end well for me, hah!
Really, I can sit and describe the music all day long, but here's a few recommendations from me when it comes to the Cave Story soundtrack.
Moonsong, Mischievous Robot, Last Cave, Running Hell, and Plantation. Those five are easily my favorites! Enjoy them on YouTube, or the whole original soundtrack for free from - and a huge shoutout to - cavestory.org

... Look, honestly, this whole thing is a really indulgent project for me. I'm going to gush a little bit here. This whole article gives me a chance to really talk about one of my favorite games of all time, and that's really important for me! Every time someone asks about indie games to look into, I'll always say Cave Story. Every time. I've bought it on every platform it's been released on, and hell, I had a PSP that I admittedly flashed to put homebrew applications on it specifically because someone ported Cave Story to it. That's just how much I love this game. To go even further, I've gone as far as to even study the nuts and bolts of the game and quite a while ago, I made a really extensive mod for the game. I added ammo counters to every weapon in the game, which previously only applied to the Bubbline and Machine Gun weapons. I replaced the Polar Star, the first weapon you acquire, with a custom Submachine Gun, with custom gun sprites and bullet sprites... It was pretty hardcore, to be honest! I went really far with this game!
I'll wrap this up by simply saying, please do yourself a favor of playing this wonderful labor of love by one guy. Daisuke Amaya, also known as Pixel. I doubt he'd ever get to read this, but seriously, Pixel, thank you for Cave Story. Everything from the gameplay, to the music, to the inner workings of the game is immaculate and it's a game I will never forget as long as I live. It's something so innately important to me. Genuinely, I love the characters, the setting, every single facet of the game is the standard that I will hold myself to when I finally start making something. I'm competitive as hell, and being able to surpass one of my game design idols would be a crowning moment for me.
As for where you can pick this lovely game up?
Cave Story is freeware, its re-releases aren’t. The original english fan-translated version is available from cavestory.org, but if you want to support Nicalis, and Pixel, buy the 3DS, or Steam versions! They come with added levels, challenge modes, etc! It’s great!
Anyway, thank you dearly for reading and (hopefully) enjoying the first of many articles from me! More are coming quickly down the pipeline!

ロメロ レポート 02: everyday, today
ロメロ レポート1x1 02: everyday, today Kenta Cobayashi x Terrell Davis This post originally appears here: http://themassage.jp/en/romero-report-2/
In this essay, I observe the work of emerging artists Kenta Cobayashi, a photographer who manipulates images with digital tools, and Terrell Davis, a multidisciplinary artist who creates 3D rendered images of the artifacts that surround and compose his life. Using photographic techniques and methodologies, the artists apply various effects, edits, and manipulations to the images they construct. They capture a world that is constantly in motion. One that is simultaneously real and artificial.
Contemporary art that tries to create a portrait of the present is often fleeting. On one hand it can omit the presence of digital culture, on the other, certain artworks scamper to capitalize on selfies, memes, virtual reality, or photoshop gradients. These approaches feel shortsighted and one-sided. Furthermore, while the topic of the real and digital is popular, the gray area in-between that subtly merges the two is often overlooked in favor of extremes. Cobayashi and Davis however explore something in-between the real and artificial, providing a better reflection of our weird-wired selves.
Based in Tokyo, Cobayashi, using his phone as a medium, records images and video of daily life, himself, his friends, and the things around him. Once an image piques his curiosity, he captures it and edits it with Photoshop and other tools. The images, whether neon signs, window blinds, or a portrait, are smudged, stamped, pulled, and stretched into new dimensionalities. This warping of images takes a mundane or common aspect of daily life and redefines it. The editing of the images is arguably a metaphor for the aspects of our lives that  are hard to describe, the things we cannot see, but we feel - the dizziness of wandering through a busy city, or the lasting blur of a neon sign that remains in our minds after we look away. Cobayashi also produces video, zine, and VR based works that further push his exploration of movement and the ecology of contemporary life.

Davis, from the New York area, creates 3D still life compositions of real world objects sourced from the internet. The objects cross cultural and geographic borders, consisting of outdated technologies such as Tomodachis, luxury perfume bottles, metrocards, Japanese snack foods, and boutique flowers. Using 3D editing software, the objects are given new color tonalities and saturation, resulting in radiant compositions. Revealing the aura of objects, the works are comparable to the concept [mono no aware]. The objects are temporal, we know they will come and go from our lives. At the same time, they are given distinct personality, Davis uses editing techniques that present the objects differently than how they look in reality. They appear more closely to how we desire them and view them in our minds.
The similarity in the work of Cobayashi and Davis is their observation and capturing of the things around them that we often ignore. In some regards, the way they edit images presents a more truthful interpretation of what reality looks like in our digitized everyday moments. It is smudged, glowing, and pulsing with vibrancy. Their subject matter of course varies, while Cobayashi focuses on locations, people, and places, Davis is more centered on a pathos or empathy for objects and the internet as a resource that brings the past and present together. Despite the contrast in subject matter, they are both interested in unlocking our perspective of everyday life and everyday things. They imbue these “everythings” with a different filter or way of seeing.
Snapshots and Smudges
There are two points in which Cobayashi and Davis produce their works. First, something based in the real world is captured - a snapshot. Following this, they manipulate it into something unique or unusual - a smudge. Everyday photography works differently from this. While photography and editing is accessible to everyone, we see a lack of creativity. Millions of images of the same thing are present, rich people hanging out on roof tops, Tokyo Sky Tree, New York’s shallow food obsessions, etc. Over and over, these images are given familiar filters and edits, temporarily making us feel like we are capturing something important - though they are quickly deleted or stored away in the digital aether. This mundanity, is countered by advertising - a mixture of images that are simultaneously overly tantalizing, impractical, and awkward. In this way, the images we create and look at on a daily basis are torn between banality and high fantasy. Cobayashi and Davis approach images and everyday life with an interest in exposing the area between these two extremes, which run parallel to our real and digital lives. The content they observe and edit may appear exuberant or eye-catching, but it comes from a place that is regular - a cluttered desk or a friend sitting in a park. The everyday is given a renewed sense of purpose. They capture an elusive hyper-fast socially-connected world, but also demonstrate that it still contains element of slowness, personal space, and intimacy.
A snapshot of our presents selves is difficult to capture. We are constantly moving rapidly into the future, with an obsession over status notifications and new technologies. At the same time, the internet preserves both the past and present. Davis’ method for constructing images comments on this. His compositions blend objects from the past with those of the present. They are borderless. A luxury water bottle is posed next to a Mariah Carey CD, an old school Nokia phone is amongst an arrangement of flowers. The objects remain stationary but emitting light and reflections. They feel simultaneously temporary and locked in time. Regarding still lifes, from an art historical perspective, the compositions Davis creates are more in line with our contemporary lives. The compositions are often top down views, as if we are looking at our own desks. It is a moment where we are trying to find our keys or respond to a text, while we are surrounded by our favorite things that are glowing for our attention.
Kenta’s way of looking at photography is unconventional. Primarily using his iPhone presents limitations in what he is able to capture. The device is limited in flash, zoom, and how it is held, but it also pens up new possibilities. Using a personal device to take photographs allows for unexpected moments and observations to be captured. For instance, while millions of photographs exist of Shibuya Crossing, Cobayashi uses editing to make the scene much more dynamic and emotive. The smudge tool becomes a method for drawing out the persona of the image that cannot be captured by a photograph alone. When he takes a photograph, he is already seeing it in motion, already thinking about how to make his vision possible. There is a sense of capturing life as it is happens; but also through the process of editing, it is about capturing the feeling of what happened. The smudges represent the parts we cannot remember directly as an image, but that we can feel as a memory.
Living in a material world
While Davis is recording or creating the memories of objects Cobayashi is capturing moments and showing how transitory and fleeting they are. Both artists, through capturing and editing, identify and illustrate the feelings or aura that the digital era emits. In contemporary art, this is where the importance of the works exist. Cobayashi and Davis examine everyday things, objects, mundane activities, places and people as if they were remnants or artifacts of the present. Their works are about the objects, things, and interactions that come into our lives that we often overlook. When Kenta captures an image of Kuala Lumpur, he is speaking to the flow of a digitized megapolis and how individuals move about in text-messaging clusters. For Davis, capturing the present is fleeting. The works speak to nostalgia and temporality. Outdated technologies are revived in his images, but placed amongst perishables such as flowers and snack foods. Ironically, Davis sources these images through the internet, which forever preserves their spirit.
Another inspiration worth noting is that both artists take an interest in video games, or at least the aesthetics of video games. Both coming from the 90s, this was a time filled with strange games, and cross-cultural exchange between the US and Japan. Davis has featured remnants of Japanese gaming systems in his works. Whether it be Tomodachis, a PSP playing Final Fantasy, or a Dreamcast. I have also spoken to Cobayashi about games - particularly Kid Pix, a game similar to Mario Paint, where you can create images with strange editing tools and a surprising amount of creative flexibility.  In the contemporary art world, the past lives of artists is often omitted. However, for artists such as Davis and Cobayashi, the past and what was accessible in it, clearly influences their present.
In the present, we spend a lot of time checking our messages, and viewing digital images of real world places.  Entering and viewing the digital world has also become normal. We have applied a digital filter to everything we see and interact with. I believe that Cobayashi and Davis view our present reality quite differently. Their works are observational gestures meant to show us what exists in-between the real and virtual. They offer a better way of seeing what the world really is. It is malleable, editable, customizable, and in a constant state of flux. It is downloadable, accessible, non-geographical.
