this is going to probably be the longest post of my life, and i HATE getting into fandom discourse which is why i don't usually write anything about fandom discourse, but i just want to address some things about our favorite rat grinders so if you want to read, click below

as someone who loves the rat grinders as nuanced antagonists who are also teenagers, i think the rat grinders before they ever joined in on porter and jace's plan were assholes.

i think they were the quiet bullies, the mean people who you never notice until they are mean to you, the ones who seem nice and respectable up close, but talk shit about you the minute you're gone.

i think most of them (kipperlilly in particular) were looking for a reason to be bad. and i know we might not ever get this confirmation, but based off kipperlilly's file and other moments with the trg, i think it's possible this is correct.

they were assholes who needed a reason to be even bigger, more dangerous assholes and most of them took it. and yes, it was either that or be dead, but i want you to know that sometimes that's not even a question. sometimes you don't even care about the other option, you just want to rage.

i think the one time all of them or maybe some of them even thought that what they were doing could be was when lucy died. and that's when i feel bad for them. they had to lock in right there because they all had made a decision, and they all needed to continue it. that's the manipulation.

i know they are kids. they are just teenagers. i work with teens, and guys, let me tell you, some teenagers are assholes. and i don't mean say a funny mean joke asshole, i mean literally going to grow up and be a shitty person asshole. i think some of the rat grinders were those kind of teens.

did they deserve to be redeemed? i think some of them do. i think buddy has a big shot at being redeemed, and i genuinely hated that he died in the last stand and had to make that decision. i think ally is going to try if they can. i think mary ann might be redeemed.

but also, you guys have to remember that this is dnd. i don't think many of you have played dnd before, or if you have you're just really conscientious about everything you do. because as a dm who has played dnd and has made nuanced antagonists, your players are gonna straight up kill them.

brennan knows that. i'm 100% sure he knows that. this isn't scripted. the intrepid heroes aren't thinking about what the fans want every time they play. in dnd, ESPECIALLY in brennan's dnd, it's kill or be killed.

the rat grinder's weren't going to use non-lethal attacks. they were going to kill the bad kids, and they were going to be UNNATURALLY happy throughout it all. they were going to spit in their faces and roast marshmallows on their bodies. they were going to not feel guilty.

sound familiar?

i think the bad kids have been nice to the rat grinders since day one. not kind, nice. they've been polite and nice to them, not going all in until this fight. if this fight happened before the finale, i think the rat grinders would have had more time to be redeemed (ex. see Ragh in season 1 who def would have died in the finale battle if the bad kids hadn't fought him earlier). but the bad kids are stressed and done.

there is no time to be polite and nice when the world is going to end.

i know you liked these characters. i did too. i'm sad to see them go, but even when someone is nuanced and could be redeemed, the person they were a piece of shit to doesn't have to be the one to redeem them. they don't have to be the one to keep them alive and make sure they only get taken the police instead of dead. cause trg would have gone to jail.

aelwyn did. so would they.

people you've wronged don't owe you forgiveness or redemption. trg didn't wrong tbk that bad, but they made them angry, they tried to kill them, and they're probably almost close to ending the world.

i'll miss you rat grinders. you guys were perfect narrative foils, but it was always going to end like this.

now stop being absolute assholes to the intrepid heroes just cause they didn't play how you wanted.

love this fandom, and yeah, d20 get shit wrong sometimes. always make sure to critique your favorite piece of media.

but at the end of the day, this isn't your table to play dnd at. this is theirs and they are having fun. why don't you go and play as the rat grinders in your home game and give them the ending they deserve, or make fanfiction about it?

put your anger into that.

Lucy-Ruben friendship is so so underrated and incredibly important to me. They are roasting marshmallows on the beach with Ivy. Going berry picking with Mary Ann. Randomly thought of the time my friends and I dragged this guy to a picnic with us to cheer him up because he was going through a rough break-up, only for his ex-girlfriend to show up there too. I vividly remember her dancing to Anne Marie and Marshmallow's FRIENDS in the middle of the bus while he was on the backseat with headphones on and tears streaming down his face

Into The Puppet's Circus

Ahem! Tonight...

Today is my birthday, a campfire was set up for my two friends and me so we can tell ghost stories at midnight. I didn't tell my dads that we'd be playing our Mario fangame instead, but I don't think they'll mind it.

"Yo Ann! When we gonna get to that castle ya built?" asked Dan who was impatiently skipping through the levels instead of analyzing them like I asked him to.

"Relax, you'll get there at the speed your deciding to speedrun at mach five" I taunted at him, fixing my strawberry blond space buns.

"You could slow down and enjoy the game instead" said Mike, fixing his glasses innocently.

Dan finally started to slow down his own pace and sat the computer to his side before facing himself forwards toward the screen. At that moment, my dads walked out of the house with the Marshmallows and sticks.

"I thought you kids'd be screamin' Bloody Mary by now." said Pappa.

"Not until I get to your daughter's castle" exclaimed Dan who was still focused on the game.

"Oh? And how many world's left do you have 'til you reach her 'secret' world?" asked Daddy.

That confused Dan while it made me blush in embarrassment.

"They haven't even reached eighteen yet Carol! Let 'em be kids. Besides, for all we know he probably hasn't completed world one." said Papa, handing me the marshmallows and sticks.

"Alright, alright. My bad. Just makin' sure nothing funny happens" said Daddy while being guided back into the house.

"You kids take care" said Papa waving back at us before they both walked inside.

"Ann, why is the game reseting every time I reach one dash four?" asked Dan, turning the computer to me.

I handed Mike the sticks while holding the bag in my mouth before kneeling both to play the game myself, assuming it was just glitching out.

Once I completed the four levels the game did reset, so I went back to quickly fix the code.

" 'Aight, it should be fixed now" I said, turning the computer back to Dan.

I sat right next to him as he played through all four levels, only for the game to reset again.

"Are you kidding me?" I shouted at the game.

Eventually, after multiple attempts of repeating my steps, the game just crashed every time I tried to open it.

"Man, I'm sorry." said Dan.

"No, it's not your fault. My game was working fine this morning. Just go home and get some sleep and I'll call you guys when I fix it." I explained, tears running down my Cheeks.

Dan walk in front of me and then gently lifted my head up. His expression was clearly embarrassed to be face to face with me, but his eye were looking into mine.

"It's gonna be a great game! Don't overwork yourself. 'Aight?" said Dan.

He and Mike then waved back as they walked down the street to their houses.

After putting out the fire and then walking the unopened bag of marshmallows back into a kitchen cabinet, I went to pick up my computer.

Against Dan's comment, I went back into my room to fix the code of my game.

As I open up the file, a random pop-up asked if I wanted to make changes to my computer. Thinking that I simply forgot to update my hardware I quickly clicked yes while laying lazily on my bed. The next image that appeared was of a criminal page. I had lent Daddy the computer for his case since the killer, whose face was on my screen, kicked his into a wall before being shot at.

"Jacklyn the Butcher" read the picture.

I simply closed the tab before my game finally booted up again. But as I took a look at the titlescreen, I noticed it wasn't my game. The sky was pitch black...

Or at least of what I could see from the windows of Peach's Castle. I had originally designed my game to be a 3D collectathon before I made it linear, so I then assumed my game got corrupted by Dan's speedrun.

"Thanks Danny Boy" I mumbled.

I started the game to my playable Bowser. His new moveset was still present so I was able to get moving pretty quickly. While circling around like an idiot, I noticed that I was already inside Peach's Castle. Moving the camera, I eventually spotted a Jack in the Box that resembled a smiling Peach. No eyes, her face slit in half until the crack reached her mouth that had an opening similar to a nutcracker.

It waved at me when I used the first person view. And then it closed its eyes and giggled at me before suddenly snapping my arms to my bed without touching me.

Two Toads sprung out of the floor to cover my screams. Despite that, I could still hear the slamming of the door to my room as my dads tried their best to open it. They had ran up the stairs too late late as my bed started to levitate towards the slowling opening closet that had become a darkened door to the puppet's hidden face.

"Do you hear your parents?" It asked me, looking deep into my eyes as it's mouth raised up and down to the sound of its own words.

"They already took me to my own personal little hell, why don't you join me?" after her last phrase, she lunged straight at me before I kicked her back into the closet from where she came. I then ripped both Toads off of me one by one before throwing them back into that "little hell" with her. My dads finally broke down the door to rush me out of my own room, but not before she came back out to grab Daddy to drag him into the closet. Both Papa and I grasped his arms as she hopped onto his back.

"Ready for my next trick?" she winked at us and giggled as he proceeded to pull him in half, organs flying in her direction.

She then jumped to Papa.

"Run!" He screamed while being torn in half the same way Daddy had died. She quickly cleaned up the bodies an then her face with a napkin before grabbing onto my leg and dragging me into the closet door and then throwing me onto the floor.

"Such a delicate little face. You will make a glorious little toy." she said, gently lifting my head with tears running down my cheeks.

She then rose into the top floor, opening a second closet door and then setting me on the bad.

"Now that your in my world we will get to play an eternal game of hide and seek!"

You will eventually learn to enjoy our little game." she closed her eyes and then slammed the closet shut. When I hurriedly crawled to the door and then opened it, all I could find was a globe playing lullaby music with a clock whose hour hand was moving ever so slowly to the next midnight.

#9 The Ghost at Dawn’s House: Chapter 15

OMG it’s sleepover time!

Next book I’m doing is Karen’s Newspaper. Yes, I’m braving a Little Sister book for this blog but it’s also got some of the funniest moments in BSC history in it.

BSC SLEEPOVER! Surprisingly, the movie choices du jour are mostly “current” stuff - Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Sixteen Candles. These outweigh the two typical BSC movie choices - Mary Poppins and The Parent Trap. I think we can assume Stacey suggested Mary Poppins and I remember Mary Anne saying Sixteen Candles is one of her favorite movies.

They can't choose which two to watch and voting doesn't work. So Kristy picks two out of a hat, since she's the Club President and their Supreme Lord and Master. Ghostbusters and Sixteen Candles it is.

They did makeovers too, compliments of Stacey and Claudia. First of all, Kristy let them do makeup on her without her fake-puking like Dawn in a Burger King? Number two, I pity whoever was on the receiving end of a Claudia makeover. “Claudia, you’ve got it set on WHORE!”

And Mary Anne is fangirling over Cam Geary again. Patience, Mary Anne. You’ll have your own personal Cam Geary in one more book.

While watching the Stay Puft marshmallow man in Ghostbusters, Kristy gets a hankering for s'mores. Of course, Dawn laughs; she doesn't have sugary crap in her house! But she underestimated Claudia and Kristy, who came prepared with an artillery of junk food - chocolate, marshmallows, M&M's, chips...oh, and some crackers for the boring health food people. Damn you and your diabetes, Stacey! You ruin sleepovers!

The candy freaks run off to make their s'mores and Stacey and Dawn roll their eyes at them. While they're gone, Dawn decides to get some revenge. And what better way than to scare the shit out of them with the secret passage? Hey, Dawn must like this idea because she uses it on Mary Anne later on in the series. Dawn explains about her secret passage and Stacey responds, “Hey, I know plenty about secret passages.” No, she agrees to take part in Dawn's vendetta against people who bring sugar into her house.

The s'mores eaters then come back and they all finish the movie. When it's done, Dawn brings them upstairs under the guise of putting MORE makeup on Mary Anne to make her look like Cam Geary's girlfriend Corrie Lalique. Well, when they all go upstairs, Dawn says she and Stacey are going to get some sodas. We then get this wonderful exchange between Claudia and Dawn:

“You have soda?” asked Claudia skeptically. “Or do you mean Perrier or sparkling, saltless mineral water from an artesian well or something?” I tried not to sound sarcastic. “Yes, we have soda. Real soda. Mom bought it for the party. One hundred percent sugar.” “Good,” said Claudia, not cracking a smile.

First of all, how the fuck does Claudia know the word “artesian?” She probably spells it “arteezhun.” Second of all, shut the hell up, Claudia. Dawn was nice enough to accommodate you. Wow, did I just defend Dawn?

Stacey and Dawn sneak into the passage, rap on the walls and the pipes and freak the shit out of everyone inside. Mary Anne goes nuts and screams that it's the ghost and Kristy is all confused. I guess this means there’s more ghosts in Stoneybrook besides Ben Brewer! Well, Dawn and Stacey come out of the passage and everyone laughs over it. Dawn tells them all about it and Claudia immediately wants to go in. But wait! They hear noise coming from the passage. And since it's 1 a.m., it isn't Nicky. Or could it be? Maybe the triplets stuck his hand in a glass of water and he ran out of the house to blow off some steam.

The girls go downstairs to sleep and the next morning discuss what they should do in the last days before they start 8th grade for the 1st of 193 times. And we've seen food in mouth dialogue and allergy dialogue and butchered accents and here we have probably the only case of face-in-pillow dialogue. Mary Anne says, “Having a cookout,” but instead it sounds like “Havee a fuh-fow.”
