From a sketch book of mine, circa 1993-94.  Animator and friend, Marv Newland kindly drew this for me.  He is a master of sketch book drawing, often publishing his year’s output and distributing among friends.  They are simply terrific.

Bambi Meets Godzilla
And now, a true classic of animation in full. No, really. This little short (which, believe it or not, was intended to be live-action at one point) has been voted by animation experts as one of the 50 Greatest Cartoons in a 1994 book! It came in number 38, beating some real classics. I guess the appeal of this thing is down to being very simple gags really well done. It has been a staple of midnight movie showings as a supporting feature for many years, it even turned up on the VHS of The Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985. I could go on about it, but there is such a thing of over explanation; just take a couple of minutes to watch this nice little 4K scan of an original print...

Network Branding 1988-1990 The Best of Original Cartoons
TV Heaven and HA! TV Comedy Network
Fred/Alan, Inc. New York
For a quick minute in the late 1980s, Nickelodeon's ad sales group could not sell Nick-at-Nite advertising ("no one wants black and white reruns!"), so they decided they'd promote themselves as a comedy network.
So, my Fred/Alan partner Alan Goodman and I brought our original idea of TV oldies to a broken down UHF channel in St.Cloud, Minnesota, and renamed Channel 47 "TV Heaven." We got more publicity in three weeks than Nick-at-Nite got three years. Nick-at-Nite parent MTV Networks threatened to fire us from all their networks and we had to resign TV Heaven.
But not before we made some awesome station identifications with our indie animation friends.
In 1990, MTV Networks revived the idea of an all comedy network in a panic after HBO launched the Comedy Channel. Fred/Alan convinced MTVN to brand theirs as HA! The TV Comedy Network, and we went to work.
(Neither The Comedy Channel or HA! succeeded and they merged, Fred/Alan named the venture "Comedy Central" and the rest is comedy television history.)

A snapshot in time of the animation scene in Vancover, April 1995.  I picked up this free paper while visiting Marv Newland at his International Rocketship studio, so animation was certainly in the zeitgeist then!  Westender, April 6th, 1995.

AX1000 : Contextual Studies in Animation (Semester 1)
For week 4 of contextual studies we looked at short narrative films, first we examined an animation by Richard Condie called The Big Snit, I personally didn’t like the design or animation style but the story was very good and entertaining because the story was clever and comedic, in short it is about a married couple who are having a game of scrabble before they get an emergency bulletin about imminent nuclear attack.
After we watched a short animation by Alison Snowden called Second Class Mail, again personally I didn’t like the style to this animation or much to the story either. The story in brief is about a woman who orders an inflatable husband in the post.
Next, we looked at an animation called The Cat Came Back by Cordell Barker. Personally, I really enjoyed the comedic style of the animation and the story was equally as funny, in short, this film is about a guy who keeps trying to get rid a cat that is annoying him but somehow it keeps finding its way back to him. you can tell that the animator was very influenced by other animations like Looney tunes and various other 80/90′s cartoons.
Following we watched two very short animation by Marv Newland first one was called Bambi meets Godzilla, the animation is minimal, and the design style is very poor but the punchline to the story if funny but sadly that’s all it is; the only thing going good for it was the joke. The second film was called Lupo The Butcher, this animation was visually much better than the previous and was considerably much funnier, the animation is about a very annoyed, bitter and vulgar butcher who is not having the best of days.
Finally, as a group we watched a short animation by Andreas Hykade named nuggets, once again this is an animation I had come across before and I absolutely love it. The animation is beautiful and seamless, the character although quite basic is very likeable and the use of certain colours have been used very cleverly plus the story is amazing, intelligent and meaningful. The gist of the film is about a small bird like character that keeps coming across golden coloured nuggets as it walks which it slurps up, then it is intoxicated for a short period of time from consuming it, which incrementally gets shorter in effect each time it consumes another nugget, this is to representing the creatures ever increasing tolerance to the drug, till eventually they do nothing for the bird all the while it’s physical appearance is vastly deteriorating. The reason for this animation is to highlight the detrimental effects of drug addiction and dependency.

Nickelodeon Camp IDs 1988-1990 from fredseibert on Vimeo.
The MTV network identification work that Alan Goodman and I did that stamped "brand!" all over the channel's launch in 1981, along with the promotion work my team did for the channel, led MTV Networks president Bob Pittman to ask our new, innovative media branding company (the world's first!) to get involved in saving Nickelodeon from extinction in 1984.
We were most excited about the creative work we could do not only with our new indie animation buddies from the MTV projects, but also with some of the newer folks we’d met since that first go. Eli Noyes and Kit Kit Laybourne started us off, but then came Jon Kane, Marv Newland, and eventually David Lubell and Charlex. And, as the years went on our friend, producer/artist Howard Hoffman, who was running a summer animation program at his childhood camp in Maine came in with maybe the most revolutionary idea of our entire tenure with Nick.
Since Alan and I always started with the sound-before-picture probably the most distinctive and memorable element of these new IDs would be our new friendship with singer Eugene Pitt and his vocal group The Jive 5. (You can get the whole story here.)
