This past Sunday, July 17th, we participated in the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Baseball in Japan with the U.S. Japan Council, Japanese American National Museum, The J. Morey Company, Yanase USA, and Nankai Shochu at the National Center for the Preservation for Democracy. ⚾
The occasion honored Masanori Murakami, fondly known by his teammates as “Mashi”, who was the first Japanese baseball player to play in the MLB. Los Angeles City and County along with California State and Local Officials honored Murakami for his contribution to the 150-year relationship between the U.S. and Japan through baseball.
Over 100 guests also enjoyed a sneak peek of our very own Yuriko Gamo Romer's upcoming documentaries Diamond Diplomacy and Baseball Behind Barbed Wire, at the Japanese American National Museum.

Watch for a longer feature on ABC 7′s Eyewitness News in the coming weeks.

What I find really scary, though, is the media. Especially television, it's so limited as to what it shows. And when that gets out, it really makes people biased, and creates an illusion that the tiny detail they focus on is the whole picture. When I was out in front of Kodemmacho Station, certainly that one block was in an abnormal state, but all around us the world carried on the same as ever. Cars were going by. Thinking back over it now, it was eerie. The contrast was just so weird. But on television they only showed the abnormal part, quite different from the actual impression I had. It just made me realize all the more how frightening television is.

Lyrics :
i could never find the right way to tell you
have you noticed i've been gone?
cause i left behind the home that you made me
but i will carry it along
mm it's a long way forward
so trust in me
i'll give them shelter like you've done for me
and i know i'm not alone
you'll be watching over us
until you're gone
when i'm older i'll be silent beside you
I know that words are not enough
and they won't need to know our names or our faces
but they will carry on for us

Eijun believed he reached a zen state of mind, the pads of his fingers pressed together in between him and the screen of a tablet he borrowed as he stared at the video playing. One did not necessarily need to practice every day to get better at baseball- knowledge was also key in becoming a true ace.
He wasn’t about to nod off and lose the trivia he’s trying hard to memorize. The long-winded script of a forty-eight minute youtube documentary on baseball wouldn’t defeat him. “Did you know,” he intoned, eyes glued to the moving pixels on the screen, “Nomu Hideo was, in fact, not the first Japanese player to play in the U.S? It was a southpaw by the name of Murakami Masanori back in 1964.”
