The Bnei Menashe (Hebrew: בני מנשה, "Children of Menasseh", known as the Shinlung in India[3]) is a community of Indian Jews from various Tibeto-Burmese[4] ethnic groups from the border of India and Burma who claim descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel; some of them have adopted Judaism.[3]: 3  The community has around 10,000 members.[1]

In 2005, a Kolkata-based study found evidence of maternally descended Near Eastern ancestry but suggested the findings were an artifact of thousands of years of intermarriage between peoples of the Near and Middle East.[6][7] In the early 21st century, Israel halted immigration by the Bnei Menashe; after a change in government, the immigration was allowed again. By 2006, some 1,700 Bnei Menashe had moved to Israel, where they were settled in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (before the disengagement). They were required to undergo Orthodox conversion to Judaism, including study and immersion in a mikveh. The immigrants were put in the settlements as these offered cheaper housing and living expenses than some other areas.[33] The Bnei Menashe composed the largest immigrant population in the Gaza Strip before Israel withdrew its settlers from the area.[34] Now they are mainly concentrated in Kiryat Arba, Sderot, Beit El, Ofra, Nitzan, Carmiel, Afula and Maalot.[35][...] Ofir Pines-Paz, [Israeli] Minister of Science and Technology, said that the Bnei Menashe were "being cynically exploited for political purposes."[37] He objected to the new immigrants being settled in the unstable territory of the Gaza Strip's Gush Katif settlements (which were evacuated two years later) and in the West Bank. Rabbi Eliyahu Birnbaum, a rabbinical judge dealing with the conversion of Bnei Menashe, accused the Knesset Absorption Committee of making a decision based on racist ideas.[37] At the time, Michael Freund, with the Amishav organization, noted that assimilation was proceeding; young men of the Bnei Menashe served in Israeli combat units.[36][...] In March 2004, Biaksiama [of the Aizawl Christian Research Centre] appeared on television, discussing the issues with Lalchhanhima Sailo, founder of Chhinlung Israel People's Convention (CIPC), a secessionist Mizo organization.[39][40] Sailo said that CIPC's goal was not emigration to Israel, but to have the United Nations declare the areas inhabited by Mizo tribes to be an independent nation for Mizo Israelites.[41] The region has had numerous separatist movements and India has struggled to maintain peace there.[...] In September 2005, a task force from the Chief Rabbinate's Beit Din (rabbinic court) traveled to India to complete the conversion of a group of 218 Bnei Menashe. India expressed strong concern to Israel about the mass conversions, saying its laws prohibit such interference by members of another nation. It wants to avoid proselytizing by outside groups and religious conflicts in its diverse society. In November 2005, the Israeli government withdrew the rabbinic court team from India because of the strained relations. Some Bnei Menashe supporters said that Israeli officials failed to explain to the Indian government that the rabbis were formalizing the conversions of Bnei Menashe who had already accepted Judaism, rather than trying to recruit new members.

I graduated undergrad at a mediocre commuter college I picked because it was in walking distance to my house and I wanted to have a degree so I could do big boy grad school and ruin my life. But I got my Education from the college I went to the first time round, a small progressive liberal arts school in swannanoa, NC that ranked #1 on the USNWR/Princeton review “high times” ranking, meaning it was the most Weed college, in 2009. It’s got a graduation rate in the 40th percentile usually, sometimes dipping as low as 30%. The weed stuff is not why I enrolled, I quit weed in 2007 due to it being always unpleasant to experience, and graduated to booze, never looking back, but I know and also imagine that some if not many of the students picked the school for that reason. The school is called Warren Wilson College. It’s situated in the blue ridge mountains, breathtakingly beautiful area deep in the hills of the old Country, the land of the mountaineers. Bluegrass music—a commercialized copy of a copy of High Lonesome banjo music carried over from the folk tunes of the British Isles and jumbled up with the slave song tradition of the Black African mountaineers’ slaves—all originated in those hills, in the area encompassing Swannanoa, Asheville, Wilkesboro, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Boone, Ingles, Chowtime, the Sunderland smoke hut, Sage circle smoke hut, and the pond down by the R&R/shop crew building. Much more on that theme to come. I was tremendously lazy so I only applied to one school and I got into it so that’s where I went.

They housed me in what I and others were convinced was the Dorm for Fuckups, a hideous 19th century workhouse lookin building called Sunderfunk (Sunderland), funk referring to the odor it supposedly emitted. I was shacked up with this fella Eric. We didn’t have a lick in common back then at least (now he’s living off the land after having lived in Kolkata, India, and he’s hip to Marxism and things), but we were as close as two fellers of the same height, one with muscle mass (him) and both with long brown hair, terrible personal hygiene, near indifference to academic and work responsibilities, etc. could be. So I guess we had much in common, really. I’d kiss him on the cheek out in the Sunderland smoke hut and he’d smack me in the face and we’d laugh and roll Bugler cigs. We wore each other’s clothes indifferently to who owned what, it wasn’t some communal ownership pact, we just didn’t give a fuck. “Ah man you busted on my minutemen shirt,” I half lamented, cracking the dorm window so we could smoke inside while we drank inside to get ready to smoke and drink outside. Eric had a Southern rasp and an odd sort of lisp, his near functional illiteracy matched by his Faulknerian way with the spoken word. “Listen L,” referring now to the pulling-out phase of the sex he was beginning to have with the first crush I had, the one I stared into with my head craned, the two of us on opposite ends of the Smoke Hut day two of orientation, her serene coolness and piercing mien, until she had to give in and laugh and say oh fuck off, “any textile or fabric in the vicinity is fair game.” I didn’t do a single load of laundry the entire year, including my sheets, and neither did he. But we were cool, and we fucked. Well, eventually I fucked. But we were definitely fucking cool.

Unsafe Buildings Will Be Bulldozed Before Monsoon- BMC

BMC have spotted out many infirm constructions in Hoshanagabad road, Arera Colony and Motia Talab area and decided to demolish them before the monsoon arrives. Aloke Verma, the mayor of BMC has revealed that there 163 locations of the city where there are unsafe buildings which could be possible threat to the citizen. Many of these constructions are illegal and violate the existing real estate rules. According to the mayor many of these constructions along drains and water bodies can lead ruthless flood like Uttarakhand, happened before a couple of years. Uttarakhand witnessed one of the worst disastrous landslide and flood incidents in 2013. In Bhopal too there was an incident like this (not so massive) where seven people had died and in 2016 and over 20,000 were displaced.

“You get to see most of the unsafe properties in north Kolkata, central and some of the southern areas of the extended city. KMC has already in process of demolition of the Property in north Kolkata and the civic body also has promised to compensate the existing inhabitants of such buildings with safe residence and healthy inhabitance, said Mr. Mahesh Somani, Vice President - NAR India & Chairman : National RERA committee, NAR India..

Sudden clearance of these constructions might cause an opposite effect in the mass. Thus, BMC has requested the district collector to inspect these sites and take apt action. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) records say that 9 buildings out of 213 around the water body have the needed building permissions. On the contrary BMC has proposed an Entertainment Park and jetty in the Upper lakeside which is supposed to be the biggest man-made lake in India and protected under the UN Ramsar convention. This lake is the source of drinking water of half of the citizen of the state capital. Green activist Subash Pandey has alleged that this project of BMC is likely to impact the water body and contaminate the drinking water as well.

Malda Diaries: The Joining

It has been a long wait for us in the West Bengal Cadre. 10 weeks into the cadre and we haven’t yet been to our districts. But when the time finally came, I can’t imagine if I could’ve been any more excited have they sent me directly to the district and it couldn’t have been more action packed.

We have spent 6 weeks at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI) in Kolkata and another 4 weeks at another training institute at Kalyani. Though bothbthe places were very kind to us and we enjoyed our stays, but all of us were looking forward to only one thing, joining our districts.

I and Anjana, took Shatabdi Express from Howrah to Malda, the best option as a flight to the nearest airport would’ve meant 4-5 hours drive to Malda, Shatabdi took 4 hours to reach the place. It was a comfortable journey, we got off at the station at around 19:30 and the driver was there to receive us. Got our luggage out, I looked back at the board at the exit, “Malda Town”. So, we have arrived, finally.

It was Saturday night when we have reached Malda, at around 21:00 after settling down, I messaged the DM, that I have reached the circuit house. This place was new, the old circuit house has now become the residence cum office of the divisional commissioner of Malda Division.

The next morning I got up and gave the DM a call and that’s when I knew, it has already begun, “Yes Naveen, I am going to visit a flood affected area, I’ll see you there, I’ll leave in 30 minutes”, said the DM. I was not surprised but yes it was a Sunday and and yes I was not actually expecting it on my first morning but I have most definitely thought about such a scenario. I got up, rushed to the washroom and got ready in 20 minutes. Anjana was still sleeping, couldn’t blame her as we have slept at around 2:00 AM.

I had already called my driver and we were on our way, it was the first time I was traveling on a field visit. Excited, of course, but then I didn’t know what to expect. We have all read about it, floods, and what the administration was supposed to do. But this was different, this wasn’t books, but real life. People were in danger, they were struggling for food and shelter.

I reached Ratua 1 block, it took me more than an hour and that’s when I realised the districts here in Bengal were very big. Not just geographical size but the population too, they were as big as sub-divisions in many other states.

When I reached the BDO office of the concerned block, the DM has just arrived and I saw his vehicle enter the premises just before mine did. I went inside the BDO office, and saw the DM and rest of the block level functionaries inside the office. I met with the DM first and he introduced me to rest of the people there. The DM was very cordial and kind in his reception and response, we talked about my training, LBSNAA, the time we have spent in Kolkata etc.

That’s when, around 30 minutes in, the DM received a call and we left for the spot. It was a 15 minute drive and one could sense the unease in the air. As we approached the one could see more and more people, the crowd started swelling and so did the noise, there were a lot of force and one could see the situation was tense.

We got down and the DM was at the spot in a flash, it was sunny day and the temperature was high with sun on our heads. In a matter of seconds, people have surrounded the DM and as I was just behind him, me and the rest of the people from the administration as well. There were the local MP and MLA also present, they were trying to talk and listen to the people, fight with each other, talk to the DM all at the same time. But the DM has his plate full, he had to listen to the conflicting parties, the various groups of people, reassure them, listen to the politicians and hear them out, try to take their concern on board and also, tell all of them and convince them about his plan.

The issue was that the increasing level of water in the river and breaching of the check dam built to contain the flow. Now a new one was an urgent need but the villagers were split, they wanted a channel diverted first so that this dam doesn’t meet the same fate but any delay now was also very costly as the water was gushing in. Another concern was that of the security of people working on the construction site. Add to all this the relief measures and you get a couldron simmering of a situation made of as many problems as there are ingredients in Indian dishes.

But, my only task here was to observe the DM. It was amazing, how easily he was managing everything. I didn’t hear him shout or raise his voice or show frustration or disappointment. He was listening very calmly even when people were shouting at his officers, though no one even once said anything to or about him. He calmed everyone down and told them about his plan, he reassured the politicians of about There concerns, talked to both sets of people and told them why in his view immediate construction was important but assured that the diversion of channel would also be looked at once immediate relief measures are done. He sat there with them and discussed other local issues, invited them to his office and met with the people.

I could see a mighty river on both the sides of the road, we were in fact at the spot where many such structures could be seen breached. It was a horrifying sight but one which introduced the service to me in the best way possible. It was cutting edge, it was in there, in the thick of the things, among the masses, it was not about an office and a car.

We got into our vehicles and got back to the BDO office. The MLA has come there as well with many of his followers. I could see that he had certain demands and the DM was well aware. It was amazing to see how the DM managed to keep everything under his control.

The day was eventful, the DM asked me to join him in his car and we left back for the city. He asked me about myself, the family, background and other things. I was also curious to know about his experience, he told me about it. It was his third year in the district and he gave me a broad outline about the place and what to expect here. I asked him, “Sir, how has your experience been in the service, on the field?”, he said, “I have enjoyed it”. This short and sweet answer was enough for me to look forward to the district training to begin. As a matter of fact though, it already had. I was out on a Sunday, the whole day, visiting a flood affected area, talking to people, observing the DM and learning all the while. It couldn’t have been better.
