Het oude Luxor behoort met zijn circa 900 stoelen tot de categorie ‘middelgrote theaterzalen'. Het biedt een podium aan cabaret, theaterconcerten, kleinere musicalproducties, toneel-, jeugd- & familievoorstellingen.

Op 22 december 1917 openden ondernemers Theo Goeman en Carel van Zwanenburg het (oude) Luxor Theater aan de Kruiskade. Daarmee was het theater het 17de bioscooptheater in de Maasstad. Met 1180 stoelen is het dan de grootste bioscoopzaal van Nederland.[1] Luxor werd ontworpen door architect P. Vermaas. Binnen 10 jaar kwam het theater in de handen van het Duitse Universal Film AG. De nieuwe eigenaren verbouwden grondig: een balkon met 500 stoelen, een nieuwe bredere gevel met kenmerkende lichttoren en grote letters met Luxor Palast.[1] Tijdens de oorlog bleven er tot 1944 filmvertoningen plaatsvinden. Het is een van de weinige gebouwen die ongeschonden bleven bij het bombardement op Rotterdam. Kort na de bevrijding werd het gebouw enigszins opgeknapt en werden er naast films ook regelmatig variété- en toneelvoorstellingen gespeeld. In de jaren 50 en begin jaren 60 ziet het Luxor grote namen en producties: de eerste onemanshow van Toon Hermans, Édith Piaf, Porgy and Bess, My Fair Lady en Heerlijk duurt het langst.

In 1972 begon weer een grondige verbouwing onder leiding van Carel Witz. Bijna alleen de buitenkant blijft staan: geen balkon meer, maar daarvoor in de plaats een sterk oplopende vloer met een laagliggende toneelvloer, waardoor het zicht op het podium sterk verbeterde. Toch begon niet lang daarna voorzichtig de behoefte te komen aan een groter en beter theater; de foyers zijn te krap, de toiletten te schaars en de technische outillage beperkt. Bovendien vertoont het gebouw langzaam maar zeker ook bouwtechnische gebreken.

Sinds 2001 bestonden er plannen om op de plaats van het oude Luxor een nieuw middelgroot theater te bouwen. Wegens geldgebrek dat voortvloeide uit de economische crisis werd echter besloten het bestaande theatergebouw te restaureren. Deze zeven maanden durende restauratie en uitbreiding, naar het ontwerp van de in Antwerpen gevestigde architecte Aude de Broissia, werd eind 2014 afgerond.

De gemeente Rotterdam schreef een ontwerpwedstrijd uit voor de bouw van het nieuwe Luxor Theater op de Wilhelminapier op de Kop van Zuid. In april van 1996 werd de architect Peter Wilson uitgeroepen tot winnaar. De van oorsprong Australische architect, omschreef zijn ontwerp als 'slank, mooi en elegant'. De combinatie van sober en warm sprak de jury zeer aan. In september 1998 ging de eerste paal de grond in, theatraal aangekleed door Hans Kombrink (toenmalig Wethouder Kunstzaken) en Freek de Jonge; het startsein voor het bouwproces. In september 2000 werd het hoogste punt bereikt.

De allereerste voorstelling, een concert door Mathilde Santing, vond plaats op 25 februari 2001. Youp van 't Hek presenteerde op 24 april het eerste exemplaar van een boek over het Nieuwe Luxor Theater dat werd geschreven door Haagsche Courant-journalist Frans Happel. Op zaterdag 28 april was de officiële opening, met de premièrevoorstelling van City van het kleinkunstduo Mini & Maxi. Hierbij was ook (toen nog) koningin Beatrix aanwezig. Daarmee was Rotterdam een groot amusementstheater (met 1527 stoelen) rijker. In het nieuwe theater zijn veelal langere series voorstellingen van grootschalige producties in de genres musical & muziektheater, show & variété, cabaret, theaterconcerten, jeugd & familie, opera en dans te zien.

Het gebouw heeft naast een opvallende architectuur ook een bijzondere belettering in en op het gebouw. Speciaal voor Luxor Theater is een lettertype ontworpen als onderdeel van de corporate identity. Dit letterfont past in elke ruimte waar men een boodschap kwijt wil (One Fits All). Het letterfont heet LUXOR.

Amsterdam 27 september 2018 – Op woensdag 24 oktober viert Mathilde Santing, al sinds de vorige eeuw een van de beste zangeressen van Nederland, haar zestigste verjaardag. Dit doet ze met de lancering van haar nieuwe studio-album: Troublemaker, geproduceerd door Attie Bauw. Een album waar (voor het eerst!) zelf geschreven songs op staan.

Sinterklaas muziek

In huizen Bom/Mendels zijn wij fan van Sinterklaas, bij ons thuis was dat al de fijnste (en voor mijn vader Clown Johnny Mendola ook zakelijk de belangrijkste) periode van het jaar. Maar volgens mij hebben Ilse en Eva de liefde voor Sinterklaas dubbel en dwars overgenomen! Ilse wil het hele jaar geschminkt en verkleed als Piet door het leven en Eva wil de hele dag door dat we Sinterklaas liedjes zingen of opzetten.

Nou vind ik de Sinterklaasliedjes ook heel leuk en gezellig, maar het eeuwige kinderkoortje word ik na 2x repeat wel een beetje zat. Daarom besloot ik vorig jaar op zoek te gaan welke artiesten die ik leuk vindt, misschien ook wel een Sinterklaas cd opgenomen hebben.

Collateral Event of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia

May 2021 – The results of the third edition of the Young Talent Architecture Award, enriched in 2020 with a parallel award in Asia, will be presented as a Collateral Event of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, in an exhibition opening on 22nd May.

The exhibition will take place in Palazzo Mora (European Cultural Centre) and will show all the projects participating in the award with models and publications of the winning projects as well as photos, drawings, videos and images of all the shortlisted, finalist and winner works.

“We were all very much impressed by the level and scope of the submissions and not least by how the students were not afraid to tackle the big issues of climate change migration, not only through long-term projects such as nuclear waste sites but also through sensitive briefs for burial sites and religious worship. Other more straightforward proposals were also decently tackled and robustly researched, beautifully illustrated, showcasing considered solutions.”

On 28th September, an event will bring together the 7 Winners and the ten jury members as well as representatives from the organising institutions, sponsors and supporters. The participants will engage in several conversations on some of today’s most talked about topics regarding architecture. The works selected for the exhibition are all excellent examples of the values of the New European Bauhaus, a movement to rethink and replan Europe which prioritises the environment through a cultural project in which design and sustainability are indissociable.

“As a jury we consider YTAA an open platform for discussion in a global and local scale. The selected projects move through different scales and geographical contexts and the question “How will we live together?” is the guiding thread for the development of proposals that operate in a diversity of ways and show how to face academic projects based on dialogue and cooperation, field research in non-hypothetic realities and inclusion of crossdisciplinarity fields.” Momoyo Kaijima, Atelier Bow-Wow, Asia edition of YTAA 2020 chairwoman.

The jury of the YTAA 2020 and the jury of the Asia Edition of YTAA 2020 are composed of renowned specialists representing diverse schools and trends in the fields of architecture and architectural critique and they will participate in the debate of the 28th September. The YTAA 2020 jury is composed by the chairwoman Martine de Maeseneer (Brussels), Oleg Drozdov (Kharkiv), Rosario Talevi (Berlin), Juliet Leach (London) and Bet Capdeferro (Girona). The Asia Edition of YTAA 2020’s jury is composed by the chairwoman Momoyo Kaijima (Japan), Minsuk Cho (South Korea), Chitra Vishwanath (India), Li Xiangning (China), Eduard Kögel (Germany/China).

YTAA is an inherent part of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award (EU Mies Award), organised by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe with the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, in partnership with the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) and the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE-CAE); World Architects as a founding partner; the European Cultural Centre as a partner in Venice; sponsored by Jung, Jansen and Regent Lighting; and with the support of USM. Bernard#8 - Victoire pour la Santé

VICTOIRE POUR LA SANTÉ est une initiative des habitant·e·s de la rue de la Victoire à Bruxelles pour la journée mondiale contre la commercialisation de la Santé. Cette initiative a été imaginée pour répondre à la campagne "Notre santé n'est pas à vendre" du collectif de soignant·e·s LA SANTÉ EN LUTTE et du Réseau Européen Santé / European Health Network.

Par cette action, nous souhaitons apporter notre soutien au personnel de la santé et devenir le porte-voix de leurs revendications. La libéralisation du secteur a engendré une baisse de la qualité des soins. Il n’est plus acceptable de demander aux services publics de faire plus avec moins pour augmenter la rentabilité au profit des intérêts privés.

Nous déclarons que la rue de la Victoire devient, dès aujourd’hui, un foyer de propagation de solidarité. Nous invitons tout·e·s les voisines et voisins de la rue, et toutes les personnes qui le souhaitent d’ici et d’ailleurs, d’unir leurs forces et déployer leur créativité pour préparer la GRANDE MANIFESTATION DE LA SANTE qui aura lieu après le confinement.
