Song Review: Widespread Panic - “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” (Live, June 21, 2024)
Some songs require everyone to bring everything to the table.
Widespread Panic’s interpretation of Dr. John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” is one of them. And on June 21, 2024, everyone came ready.
There’s John Bell coaxing eerie moans with a slide. JoJo Hermann plays organ like a man living deep in the blues. The mood changes from New Orleanian groove to straightforward rock ‘n’ roll to freeform music and the tempo shifts frequently across the quarter-hour of juju WSP brings to “Guilded Splinters.” And it seems safe to assume Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater ain’t experienced such gris-gris this just-released performance was captured on professional video.
Grade card: Widespread Panic - “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” (Live - 6/21/24) - A-
