I’ve got a lot of baseball on my mind today so I’m just going to throw it all on one post.

1) Glenn Beckert passed away two days ago (April 12, 2020) at the age of 79. He played most of his relatively short career for the Cubs (1965-1975). He was a rock-solid second baseman and part of a great middle infield with Don Kessinger. Primarily a singles hitter, he hit .342 in 1969 yet finished 3rd in the NL Batting Title. Check out this list from that year: Joe Torre (STL) .363, Ralph Garr (ATL) .343, Beckert (CHC) .342, Roberto Clemente (PIT).341, Hank Aaron (ATL) .327, Manny Sanguillen (PIT) .319, Cleon Jones (NYM) .319, Matty Alou (STL) .315, Lou Brock (STL) .313., Rusty Staub (MON) .311. I guess lowering the pitching mound from 15 to 10 inches after the 1968 “Year of the Pitcher” had a positive effect.

2) Jim Frey passed away yesterday (April 13, 2020) at the age of 88. He led the 1980 Kansas City Royals to the World Series. (They lost to Philadelphia.) He went on to manage the Chicago Cubs to their first post-season appearance in 39 years in 1984. (Cubs choked against San Diego, losing a 5-game series after winning the first 2 games.) In 1989, he was the Cubs general manager when a group of youngsters and mostly no-names won the NL East. (They lost to the Giants in the division playoffs.) During the 1987 and 88 seasons, he was a color commentator on the Cubs radio broadcasts. I spent a lot of time on the road back then and listened to a lot of Cubs games on the radio. One of my favorite moments was when, during a game, Frey was asking Lou Boudreau about the College of Coaches from the Cubs early 1960’s team. Hearing Frey pepper Boudreau with questions, Boudreau trying to offer answers suggesting the system made some sense, and Frey’s maniacal laughter after each answer made for superb radio comedy. (You’ll have to Google College of Coaches to understand what I’m talking about.)

3) Kirk Gibson - My wife sent me a post from Twitter that asked, “What is the greatest home run you’ve ever seen in person?” For me it was May 10, 1985, Chicago White Sox vs Detroit Tigers at the original Comiskey Park. It was a balmy spring evening and we were sitting in infield seats on the 3rd base side of home plate. Tom Seaver was pitching. Kirk Gibson hit a home run over the right field roof. It cleared the roof at 350 feet and was an estimated total distance of 525 feet. With my view looking down the first base line, I was able to watch the trajectory of the ball as it disappeared into the night. I’ll never forget that moment.

4) Tony Armas – This is my runner up. It occurred during a Saturday afternoon game at Comiskey Park on April 28, 1984. The White Sox were playing the Red Sox and Tony Armas cranked a line drive into the center field bleachers, only the 6th of 7 such home runs hit in the 80-year history of the ballpark. (As with Gibson’s home run, Tom Seaver was the White Sox pitcher.) Comiskey Park bleachers were small (compared to it’s North Side counterpart Wrigley Field that sports bleachers from foul pole to foul pole). They were just a small section underneath the score board in center field. The center field fence was 415 feet from home plate, but the bullpens were behind it. The actual seating area was about 450 feet from home plate. My wife and I were sitting in the outfield grandstands that day, maybe 20 feet from the bleachers. But here’s the thing; I had left my seat to get beer or food or whatever and I missed it! When I came back, my wife calmly said to me, “You should have seen this home run.” And casually pointing at the bleachers, “It went in there.” I was like, “W-H-A-T?!? There was a home run hit in the bleachers! AND I DIDN’T SEE IT!!!” At any rate, I tried finding video of that home run along with Kirk Gibson’s home run but came up empty. (The other home runs in the Comiskey Park bleachers were Jimmie Foxx (1934), Hank Greenberg (1938), Alex Johnson (1970), Dick Allen (1972), Richie Zisk (1977) and George Bell (1985).

It turned into a two parter hope that’s okay :))

You had been at Cordelia's side for a long while. You'd been a friend of hers growing up at the academy, sharing a love for plants and potions that nobody else really understood.

Both of you were pretty much ignored by all the other girls there, but it swasn’t something either of you minded. Loving being taught by Myrtle and just spending time with one another.

You were growing closer as you got older, and by the age of sixteen you had grown into something hat was more than friends. You held hands under the table at the greenhouse whilst working together with your free hands. You went on walks through the neighbourhood together, going to the woods or a nearby park.

In a little park close to the academy you had your first kiss with her. It was magical and a bit clumsy but it was seared into your memory. your hands clammy with nerves as it lead up to that moment.

You had been talking about the full moon and some of the special potions you two could make this night becasue of it, when suddenly a silence fell. As you had looked up at her you saw her eyes were trained on your lips, and it made your heart skip a beat. you swallowed hard and held her hand as you backed yourself into a tree, so you wouldn’t simply swoon when she kissed you.

Then she leaned in, you closed your eyes, and then her lips touched yours, and it was like everything in the universe was right. This little moment was something nobody could ever take away from you.

Then something happened. Cordelia began to distance herself from you, and you didn’t understand why. So you just kept your head down and finished your studies.

You had left the academy when you thought you couldn't learn any more. You also discovered why Delia wasn’t her usual self. Why she was pulling away. She wasn't your Delia anymore, because her time went to that nasty boy.

It was a few years later when you got a wedding invite and it made your stomach churn. It didn't sit right with you. Hank fucking Foxx didn’t sit right with you, but there wasn��t much you could do about it. You rsvp’ed that you’d come.

The wedding was grand and you could see Fiona poured some good money, or at least some of her powers of persuasion in the wedding. It was bigger than you’d ever imagined Cordelia having. Cordelia was a woman of subtlety, of elegance and class. Your Delia was someone down to earth, and this didn’t seem like the wedding for someone down to earth.

You hugged and congratulated her, and she told you she was surprised you’d come. You nodded and went on your way. Not really in the mood to be your happy self you had always been with her.

Hank came up to you during the evening. Someone about him felt off. Cordelia had always been too sweet, too loving and too fogiving for her own good. Perhaps she wa blinded by this kind side he showed her, because he was outright nasty and mean to you now.

Instead of replying to his taunts, or hexxing him, you just walked away and out of the wedding venue.

This wasn’t worth it anymore.

It wasn’t until a few year later that you’d come back to the academy and back to Cordelia’s side...

Mattie C. Caruthers is a true veteran in the entertainment industry. Her career started in music at Little David Records, where she was an assistant to Monte Kay (founder of Birdland, and manager/jazz producer to Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and the Modern Jazz Quartet). Mattie was part of a small team working on all aspects of the record label, including artist development, publicity, and distribution for records by Flip Wilson and George Carlin, as well as groundbreaking television shows. The company acquired two Grammys and five Gold Records.

Mattie ventured into film and television where she eventually became a director, writer and producer. Her credits include Script Supervisor and Associate Director with Damon Wayans on My Wife and Kids; with Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; and with Jamie Foxx on The Jamie Foxx Show. She was Associate Director on Let’s Stay Together, Cuts, Keenan & Kel, The Parent ‘Hood, and Sinbad.

Mattie worked with Norman Lear as a writer’s assistant, and studied under the watchful eyes of some of the industry’s most outstanding directors such as Andy Cadiff, Joel Zwick, Andy Ackerman, Jamie Widdoes, Shelley Jensen and Ken Whittingham. Her television directorial debut on My Wife and Kids earned Mattie a 2006 NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding Director in a Comedy Series, and a 2005 BET Nomination.

Mattie has worked on a variety of hit movies, TV shows and commercials, alongside Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Pryor, Garry Marshall, Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, and Bill Cosby, among others. Mattie is the recipient of the 2007 Award of Achievement from the African American Film Marketplace and S.E Manly Short Film Showcase. Mattie’s work as a writer-producer includes the screenplay of the full-featured films Black Eye Motoring and Ring Bell Walk In. She also created the sitcom pilot, My Sisters and me and  directed and co-wrote the episode, “Who’s Coming to Dinner,” which was produced by MacMattie Productions.

Currently, Mattie is executive producer to singer-songwriter Torin Floyd; she executive produced his “Take Me Higher” video; directed and executive produced his “Sky High” music video. She has also written and directed a short film about Torin, The Interview. Mattie is the Founder and CEO of MacMattie Productions. The company’s mission is to produce distinctive and successful films. She is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.

This event is with a Director, Producer and Writer who will discuss a variety of topics, including: directing/capturing the writers vision, writing strong characters, creating a compelling premise and/or story, finding your voice, script development, among other topics.

Mattie C. Caruthers is a true veteran in the entertainment industry. Her career started in music at Little David Records, where she was an assistant to Monte Kay (founder of Birdland, and manager/jazz producer to Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and the Modern Jazz Quartet). Mattie was part of a small team working on all aspects of the record label, including artist development, publicity, and distribution for records by Flip Wilson and George Carlin, as well as groundbreaking television shows. The company acquired two Grammys and five Gold Records.

Mattie ventured into film and television where she eventually became a director, writer and producer. Her credits include Script Supervisor and Associate Director with Damon Wayans on My Wife and Kids; with Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; and with Jamie Foxx on The Jamie Foxx Show. She was Associate Director on Let’s Stay Together, Cuts, Keenan & Kel, The Parent ‘Hood, and Sinbad.

Mattie worked with Norman Lear as a writer’s assistant, and studied under the watchful eyes of some of the industry’s most outstanding directors such as Andy Cadiff, Joel Zwick, Andy Ackerman, Jamie Widdoes, Shelley Jensen and Ken Whittingham. Her television directorial debut on My Wife and Kids earned Mattie a 2006 NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding Director in a Comedy Series, and a 2005 BET Nomination.

Mattie has worked on a variety of hit movies, TV shows and commercials, alongside Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Pryor, Garry Marshall, Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, and Bill Cosby, among others. Mattie is the recipient of the 2007 Award of Achievement from the African American Film Marketplace and S.E Manly Short Film Showcase. Mattie’s work as a writer-producer includes the screenplay of the full-featured films Black Eye Motoring and Ring Bell Walk In. She also created the sitcom pilot, My Sisters and me and  directed and co-wrote the episode, “Who’s Coming to Dinner,” which was produced by MacMattie Productions.

Currently, Mattie is executive producer to singer-songwriter Torin Floyd; she executive produced his “Take Me Higher” video; directed and executive produced his “Sky High” music video. She has also written and directed a short film about Torin, The Interview. Mattie is the Founder and CEO of MacMattie Productions. The company’s mission is to produce distinctive and successful films. She is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.
