In today's fast-paced world, where the dining experience is not just about food but also about ambiance and presentation, digital menu boards offer a sleek, modern solution for cafes and restaurants. Digital signage doesn't just enhance your aesthetic appeal; it serves as a powerful marketing tool that can help streamline operations, improve customer engagement, and ultimately boost sales. This blog post will explore the transformative benefits of menu boards, the advantages of digital signage, and tips for implementation.
What Are Menu Boards?
Menu boards are displays that convey information about the food and beverage offerings at a café or restaurant. Traditionally, they have been static displays made of blackboards, printed menus, or screens. With technological advancements, many establishments now opt for digital menu boards, which offer a dynamic and engaging way to present their offerings.
Tumblr media
The Benefits of Digital Menu Boards
Dynamic Content Management: One of the most significant advantages of digital menu boards is their ability to display dynamic content. With digital signage, you can easily update menu items, pricing, and promotions in real time. This flexibility means you can respond quickly to supply chain changes, seasonal offerings, or special promotions, keeping your menu fresh and exciting.
Engaging Visuals: Digital menu boards allow you to incorporate high-quality images and videos that can entice customers. A well-designed graphic can showcase your dishes, highlighting ingredients and presentation, which can increase the likelihood of an upsell. Eye-catching visuals can significantly impact a customer’s decision-making process, leading to higher sales.
Increased Sales: Studies have shown that restaurants and cafes using digital signage experience increased sales. By upselling and promoting specific items through strategically timed promotions or seasonal items, you can guide your customers’ choices toward higher profit margins.
Tumblr media
Better Customer Experience: Digital signage can improve the customer experience by providing clear and easily readable menus. With customizable layouts, you can emphasize popular items or highlight nutritional information, making your menu easily digestible for customers. Additionally, the use of animations and transitions can add an element of entertainment while customers wait in line.
Integrated Solutions: Many digital menu board solutions can be integrated with your POS system, allowing for automated updates based on inventory levels or sales data. This integration ensures that your menu reflects what is genuinely available while reducing the likelihood of customer disappointment.
Energy and Cost Efficiency: While the initial investment in digital signage may be higher than traditional menu boards, the long-term savings are substantial. Digital boards eliminate the need for printing new menus regularly, thereby reducing waste and the costs associated with physical menu updates.

Menu Board Customization Helps Differentiate
Selecting a menu board system to meet your needs can become a frustrating process.  With more and more options becoming available it could be overwhelming.  Personally, I am all about variety being the “spice of life,” but let’s face it, sometimes it just makes it easier when there are less considerations to make; like what cable company to go with.  The thing about menu boards is that although there are a lot of options, they’re all loosely similar.  You have your magnetic systems, backlit systems and direct print systems.  Each one of these is given one spin or another (i.e. wood trim).  So with this in mind, the concern often shifts to, “well I don’t want to look like every other restaurant,” or “well I’m not a restaurant so these won’t work for me.”  There are three things to keep in mind that will help dispel these apprehensions.
Tumblr media
1- The design work will distinguish your system from others
If you are next door to another restaurant and you have the same menu board structure, this is a non-issue.  What people often fail to realize is that it is the design itself that will differentiate you from one-another.  Further, using full graphics vs. a strip and digit layout provides even more opportunity for uniqueness.  Watermarks, gradients, silhouetted images, etc are simply not able to be used with strip and digit layouts.  Ultimately, if you are looking for something that falls outside a particular standard product line you can definitely go the route of a custom system.  A lot of times the word “custom” is associated with high cost.  This isn’t always the case.  Don’t hesitate to inquire.
2- Menu Board companies do more than just fast food joints
There seems to be some trepidation from folks outside the QSR industry to work with menu board companies for their signage.  This is fair considering, like us, they heavily market to that (QSR) segment.  Obviously there are reasons for this.  From a business, competition and level of expertise perspective, it makes sense.  However it should be known that these companies are not limited in terms of the various types of signage they offer and serve to a variety of industries.  Yes, we have worked in automotive, yes we have worked in hospitality, yes we have worked in schools, etc, etc, etc.

𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄
xxii. intense (1.9k written)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he takes a deep breath, hyping himself up as he enters the unusually quiet cafe. he was used to coming at later hours of the day that the serenity he walked into made him feel awkward.
"hi, welcome," despite the warm salutation, the voice did not sound the least bit welcoming. before jungwon could even make a face at the displeasure he felt with the service, another cheerful voice echoed.
"morning and welcome!" the frown on his face disappears before it could even form completely. he felt all the stress from his body drain right upon hearing the most angelic voice he had ever heard in his years of living.
blinking, he turns to the source of the sweet voice. he lets out a soft breath as you tilt your head confusedly at his dazed look. you were so cute like this he was almost speechless, forgetting he needed to order something to not look like a weirdo coming into the cafe for no good reason.
"what can i get for you?" there goes the sweet voice again attempting to render him unable to function once again.
starry eyed, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, he manages to stutter out a response. "u–um, just give me a moment," he scratches the back of his neck sheepishly, embarrassed at the effect you have on him.
he looks up at the menuboard above and almost misses your cranky, unwelcoming coworker snickering at him when you smile kindly at him. you smack renjun on the arm as the older moves to stock up some disposable lids, nagging about the closing team forgetting to do so last night.
"have you been here before? would you like some recommendations?" you ask him when you see him still glaring intently at the menu after a full minute.
he runs a hand through his hair, nodding his head shyly at you. you chuckle, eyes flickering up at the fluffy pastel locks on his head. "hey! we have the same hair colour!" you exclaim, turning sideways to show him your tied up ponytail.
"oh we do?" give him the oscar for best actor right now cuz the way he examines you to confirm it, no one would suspect that he already knew you donned the hair colour.
"oh yeahh we do, yours look really good though!" he compliments, trying to be more comfortable talking to you. being nervous would get him nowhere—he was already falling back amongst the others to begin with.
"thank you! i really didn't know if i would suit it since i've never really gone for lighter colours but with the compliments i'm getting, i think it was a good choice," you let out a giggle and it took all of jungwon to not physically react to how cute you were.
"it was a good choice, yeah," he smiles, still admiringly looking at your tied up hair. "it's my first light coloured pick too actually," he admits, conveniently leaving out that not only was it his first light colour, it was his first time even dyeing his hair all together. but anything for love, right?
"you suit it," you remark, smiling brightly at the boy. it's true, his hair colour matched well with his cute face and charming dimples, giving him a softer look despite the broad shoulders making him look anything but it.
"hi, welcome," the same monotonous voice cuts your conversation short as another customer enters the cafe. thank god for the two counters as renjun automatically makes his way to the second one to attend to the newcomer.
"oh, sorry! i forgot you wanted a recommendation!" you apologise to the boy, turning slightly to point at the menu as you give him a rundown of the menu.
jungwon, of course, had been here a million times before and always got the same drink every time—an extra sweet regular iced hazelnut latte with just a single shot instead of the recipe's double. he needed his caffeine fix for his studying sessions but he doesn't really like coffee so he settled for more sweet and less coffee kind of coffee. he's here for a good time not a long time.
"are you up for a coffee this morning or no coffee? we've got tea too, or non caffeinated drinks as well if you'd like," you offer after letting him know the cafe's bestsellers.
he pretends to think for a moment, thanking the gods above that no other customer had walked in. he was really taking his own sweet time, savouring this moment with you.
renjun throws a bombastic side eye at the younger boy, wondering what was taking so long for him to order. even after he was done taking another customers order and even expediting said order of a small iced americano, jungwon had yet to make a decision on a drink.
"hmm, which one do you like, y/n?" the name drop catches you off guard and you blink confusedly. "o-oh?" renjun once again, having no other form of entertainment at 11:30 in the morning, finds this whole conversation amusing.
first, how painfully obvious it was that the boy is interested in you. second, the boy obviously would know you since he obviously was part of the friend group of that new riki friend you made. how you didn't recognise him was BEYOND renjun but he was past the stage of questioning your idiocy. absolutely no thought behind those eyes sometimes. third, even if he wasn't a regular customer, your nametag was pinned onto your apron for the whole world to see so obviously the boy would use it to address you.
"ummm....my favourite would be the chocolate shake, there's no coffee in it since i'm not really a fan of coffee," you gain back your confidence after remembering you had your nametag on and obviously an attentive customer would make use of it. "but it's a little intense for this time of the day so i get if yo—"
"i'll have that, then," he shoots you a charming, dimpled smile and you couldn't help but melt under his gaze. damn, he's cute.
"oh, um, okay, any pastries to go along with it?" he pauses to think for a while before deciding he didn't want another repeat of the whole 'pick a flavour' situation. "what's good here? can you choose for me? i'm not good with making decisions. i'm not picky so you can just give me anything," he assures you, holding out his card for payment.
he then makes his way to the corner seat after paying, sitting right by the window as he uses his phone to pass time. renjun snickers as he walks by you to grab the plain croissant you had picked for the cute boy while you finished up on the drink.
"do you ever go a day without a customer trying to win you over?" he teases, placing the heated pastry onto a plate and onto a serving tray. "what are you talking about, junnie?" you roll your eyes, sprinkling the topping on top of the drink.
"he was so obviously interested in you. but you do know he's friends with your new friend right? that little study group that would come here like once a week," renjun says matter-of-factly. your jaw drops at this new information.
"what," you say dumbly. "y/nie, i don't know how you didn't notice. he just has a different hair colour now but his face is really easy to remember," he says, pausing to scream an unenthusiastic 'order for jungwon!' throughout the cafe before turning back to you.
you throw a quick smile at jungwon as he collects his order, happy to receive an adorable one back from the cute boy. "not once did he look down at your name tag, by the way. i assure you he already had your name memorised from the million visits before. i bet he's wondering why you treated him like a new customer to our shop," renjun, 24, professional shit stirrer.
"oh no, do you think i hurt his feelings? should i say sorry to him?" you panicked. the older looks around, seeing there wasn't much to be done as it was a slower morning. chaeyoung was inside handling some light paperwork and she would come out only if she was needed or if it was busy. "yeah, go ahead. nothin' better to do anyway,"
you roll your eyes at his remark, making your way to the pink haired boy by the window.
"jungwon," you say ominously, sitting down in front of him with a blank espression. his eyes widen but he continues sipping on the drink while maintaining eye contact with you. "the pastry was a great pick. a plain one goes really well with the sweet drink. thanks," he says, taking another sip of the beverage.
"oh, yeah you're welcome. but not why i'm here," you tell him and he only responds with a confused tilt of his head.
"how did i forget you?" you ask, more to yourself than to the amused boy in front of you. "what ever do you mean?" he feigns innocence.
"you've been here a lot before with riki. you even introduced yourself to us. why'd you act like it's your first time here?" you jokingly glare at him, glancing back at the counter to see if renjun needed help. the older gives u a teasing smile and you roll your eyes, turning your attention back to jungwon.
"okay, yeah i admit i've been here a lot but hey, it's the first time i've tried this drink though. and i don't blame you for not recognising me anyway. we've interacted only once and i had a different look back then," he explains and you huff. "also you were so excited to introduce the drinks to me, i just had to let you do it," his eyes crinkle and those dimples once again make their appearance.
"when did you get it done?" you point to his hair, looking back at the entrance for any new customers.
"just last night actually! i was on tiktok and saw a random person with this hair colour and decided on impulse that i wanted it too," nothing wrong with a little white lie. it's true that he decided it after seeing someone with this hair colour, just that it wasn't on tiktok, and it wasn't just a random person.
"wait, me too! i just did it yesterday afternoon but it was your friend sunoo who convinced me!" you proceeded to pull out your phone from your back pocket to show him your tweet from yesterday, which made him pull out his own tweets too.
this lead to you two exchanging twitters before you changed topics, making small talk with him.
and when you had to resume work to prep for the lunch rush, jungwon continues sitting down at the same spot, giggling internally about the whole exchange with you.
granted, it wasn't a whole hangout like you and sunoo did or a whole arcade outing like you and riki, but if he managed to snag your phone number out of this then that means he's getting somewhere, right?

I actually love English instead of Simlish in the game. For me, it adds to the realism and immersiveness of the game. Find the mod linked below. For me, a lot of little tweaks really make a big difference when you take them all together.
