If you're looking for a definitive overview of the immense and multi-pronged history of house music within the city of London—a movement that house may not still exist today without—look elsewhere, cuz this little playlist ain't gonna be that by any means. What this is instead is a collection of personal faves, some of which are pretty obscure, that have come out of that city in some form or fashion over the years. It has progressive house pioneer William Orbit—who'd later go on to form a partnership with Madonna that'd end up yielding terrific pop bops like "Beautiful Stranger" and "Ray of Light"—the great Ashley Beedle twice, France's Dimitri From Paris remixing Björk (who was living in London when she released "Isobel") and acid jazz stalwarts The Brand New Heavies, a summer party remix of The Art of Noise that has the god Rakim on it, a little-known blissfully bouncy remix of Wildchild's "Renegade Master" that got way overshadowed by Fatboy Slim's remix of it instead, and things close out with a song by a duo called The Hydraulic Dogs that samples liberally from Roger Troutman's iconic vocoder portions of 2Pac & Dr. Dre's "California Love." So, all in all, a bunch of contemporary music legends on here, and yet still a house music playlist like you've probably never heard before. And it's all connected to London in some way! 🙌

Capturing the ambience of Metroid Prime

This first-person adventure offers an impeccably-crafted series of engrossing environments to explore. The Prime Trilogy was collected in a Wii release, which this post explores in parallel with the Gamecube original.

Capturing footage

The definitive way to play Prime is a specialized fork of the Dolphin emulator, called PrimeHack. It brings mouse-look and robust widescreen display to Prime (vanillaTrilogy only offers anamorphic). It also restores certain Gamecube details that weren't correctly ported to Wii.

PrimeHack comes with several cheats that are useful for navigating Prime and capturing footage. We can activate noclip to fly Samus around, ignoring gravity and collision, using the movement keys. This is more robust than using Dolphin's Free Look feature, as our final render and game culling frustums will be aligned (that said, we can always disable culling in PrimeHack's GFX panel).

Removing the HUD and viewmodel

To remove the HUD, we can simply use Dolphin's Free Look to push the render forwards a bit. This works because Prime's HUD is drawn using 3D geometry suspended in front of the player.

We can also remove HUD elements using Prime's in-game settings, PrimeHack's Viewmodel Position options, and/or replacing UI textures using Dolphin's loading feature.

Prime World Editor

This fan-mode editor allows anyone to explore and modify Prime's maps. We can use this tool to identify where ambient sound assets are placed in Prime's areas.

Capturing audio

Amuse can extract and play samples and sequences from games utilizing MusyX. You can use Aruki's PakTool to unpack Prime's archives.

Avoid the Trilogy release for audio recording, as it has issues when compared to the original games (the rain on Tallon IV, for example).

PC port project(s)

Code-named Metaforce, this project seeks to produce a Windows-native version of Prime. There is a decompilation underway as well.

Nintendo Switch remaster

Prime's visuals were overhauled for a 2023 release on Switch. It runs natively in widescreen. I didn't explore this, but it may be possible to achieve some of the above using one of the popular Switch emulators.

Notes and findings

The rain on Tallon IV cycles through four discrete "intensity" (pitch + volume) levels randomly. This is controlled by scripts inside the map file.

There are some unplayed environmental audio cues in Prime's map files, for example howling winds on Phendrana Drifts.

Musk says Twitter will change its logo to an "X" for bird

Elon Musk is planning to make a major change to Twitter by replacing its logo with the famous "X" of a bluebird. He announced the plan on his personal Twitter account and is expected to implement it globally on Monday.

Musk has always had a fondness for the letter "X" and has used the name often in the past, considering that when he bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, he said that "the acquisition of Twitter was the catalyst for the creation of the universal app, X! ".

It's worth noting that Musk's rocket company SpaceX has always ended with an "X," and the online financial services company he founded in 1999 was originally called X.com and is now known as PayPal.

All 3 games in the Prime Trilogy use a file format called MREA, short for Metroid Area. This wiki has extensive details on the file format itself if you're interested in parsing the raw data, but I'd recommend against that since there are some decent tools available (see below).

Good news: There is! Not-as-good news: The project is currently dormant and hasn't been updated in a while, so getting it set up will take some work.

HECL is a tool that converts files from all 3 Prime games into Blender files (or human-readable text), but as you might notice, there are no publicly viewable releases of the tool anymore.

The Metroid Prime modding community has pretty firmly fallen to the Discord side of the Discord/forums war, so I would recommend joining their server and checking out the #metaforce-chat channel. There's a pinned message there with an archived HECL build and some info on setting it up, and the community is very willing to help if you run into any issues.

You'll need about 4 GB of free space, since HECL extracts the entire game rather than specific assets, and I'd recommend setting it up close to the root of your hard drive, because it creates a lot of sub-folders and sometimes runs into issues with path-length limits.

bonus question: do you think the reactor is fission, fusion, matter-antimatter, or something else? i already have my opinion, but curious what others think

I am super ignorant when it comes to real-life physics, but I guess I had assumed fusion? Just cause that seems slightly futuristic, but also still capable of emitting deadly radiation. It also seems to be powered by a bunch of big orange crystals, though, and I have no idea how those fit into any real world reactor technology... Maybe they got them from Xen.
