NEWS OF THE WORLD (2020) Grade: B-
You get strong performances and good production. The plot isn’t anything special, it's a good film but not a classic. Worth your attention.

See all those words printed in a line one after the other? Put 'em all together and you have a story.

News of the World    [trailer]
A Civil War veteran agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will.
I guess it's about the journey, but it's easy to see where the main story is going early on. Along the way we get some gorgeous landscapes and a few reminders why it was called the Wild West, and why the US is almost as divided today as it was back then.
Hanks is as likeable as ever, the main additional reason to watch is to see Helena Zengel. It'll be very interesting to see how her career will develop in the coming years.

The Climb (2019)
A relationship between two men examined through relationships with women. Mike is the alpha male friend Kyle can't quit coming back to no matter how he abuses the relationship. Kyle is the home Mike can always come back to when things get bad for him. It's not really healthy, but it works for these guys, and mostly works as the basis for an episodic comedy.
There are some cute formal cinematic tricks in the structure of the chapters which usually (maybe always?) start with the audience scrambling to piece together how much time has passed since the last episode and what exactly is going on as we reenter the story. Everything is clarified quickly enough that it's a pleasant disorientation rather than an annoying one. Some of the episodes end with incidental on-screen musical performances which are very cool, but too inconsistently used to be part of the structure of the movie. They should have been included in every chapter, or not used at all.
The Climb isn't consistent enough to be an 'A' comedy, but it's a solid 'B' comedy.

BEST MOVIES OF 2020, #15-11
Had I known that the majority of movie theaters were going to close due to COVID-19 in March 2020, I would have gone to the movie theater a lot more in January and February. Even when movie theaters began re-opening in the Summer and Fall, I didn’t feel the risk was worth it. What few drive-in movie theaters were around didn’t have anything that enticed me to go. And this is me we’re talking about here. No one on this planet wants to go to the movies more than me, but it needs to be safe for me to do so.
The vast majority of movies on this list are movies I saw on streaming or DVD, while it still counts for this list, it didn’t feel the same to see so many brand new movies on the small screen. In the case of movies like Tenet, I definitely felt like it lost something by seeing it on the small screen. There were also tons of movies that were postponed until more audiences are going back to the movies. The lack of overall quality movies lead to grading movies on a curve, where the need for escapism in a terrible time made some movies seem better than they were. Movies that in a regular year would be considered fair seemed good, good seemed great, great seemed spectacular. There were also a lot of films with a really strong performance (or more) but the film itself wasn’t bigger than the sum of its parts (i.e. Jessie Buckley in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Bill Murray in On the Rocks, Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal, and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman to name a few). I probably watched more movies in this year than in any other year (new ones and old ones) and I truly appreciated movies now more than ever. The top-grossing movie of the year was Bad Boys for Life. Here are my picks:
15. The Way Back  Gavin O’Connor
14. I Care a Lot  J Blakeson
13. Mank  David Fincher
12. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom  George C. Wolfe
11. The Climb  Michael Angelo Covino

The Climb    [trailer]
A look at the friendship between two guys that spans over many years.
The funniest opening I've seen in quite some time. Unfolding in one long, uncut scene.
Rarely have I've been laughing at so many moments that actually were so tragic.
Mike is obnoxious, but I guess true friends sometimes are like that. Though I can't really imagine dealing with someone like that for all of my life.
There were so many great tracking shots, it probably made Joe Wright envious.
