My Time in New Haven / Yale

I want to make it clear that I did not officially study at Yale and my time there wasn't due to my academic achievements. Instead, I was fortunate to spend three months in New Haven because my best friend is a fellow at Yale.

Back in September of last year, I was juggling numerous responsibilities in New Haven. I was pet-sitting, occasionally babysitting, and sometimes house-sitting. I was also interning at a local refugee resettlement NGO called IRIS, which does fantastic work. Additionally, I attended lectures whenever I could. I simply asked the professors if I could join their classes; some declined, but others were happy to have me. I never missed a class with Frank Griffel on Islamic Law and thoroughly enjoyed participating in Elisabeth Wood's seminar on Contesting Injustice.

September in New Haven was hot, but I was fortunate enough to witness the leaves change colors throughout the month. I quickly found my favorite hangouts: G-Café, Atticus, but especially Book Trader. I even managed to get myself a bicycle for commuting between Wooster Square and East Rock, thanks to a post on Reddit. However, one month was far too short to fully enjoy everything. I knew I had to return soon, especially to see my closest friend again.

My winter was lonely, with little progress at university and nothing really keeping me at home. So, I decided to head back to the U.S. again. Flights were incredibly cheap—I paid just 150 Euros for a direct flight from Berlin to JFK. Since I was subletting my dorm room and didn't have to pay rent in New Haven, staying with my friend this time instead of a host family, I would actually save money by being in the U.S. rather than staying here.

In February, New Haven greeted me with a blizzard, the likes of which I hadn’t seen in years. Determined to make this stay productive, I approached it as a form of self-care and a luxury retreat, even though my accommodation was far from luxurious. I stayed in my friend's law school dorm, sleeping on his carpet after the air mattress his suite mate kindly provided turned out to be broken. Adaptable as ever, I had no trouble making do with the floor.

I depended on my friend to access buildings since I needed his ID or had to sneak in. Still, I aimed to be as independent and busy as possible. I managed to get a bicycle again, this time a racing bike loaned to me by a generous neurology researcher. With newfound mobility, I quickly started exploring the city and surrounding areas. I rode 20 miles on the New Haven Northampton Canal Greenway until the snowy path made further progress impossible.

Attending lectures became a significant part of my routine. I registered for several classes, but the ones I frequently attended were "Politics Without Politicians" with Helene Landemore and "Capitalism as Religion" with Paul North. I also made a point to attend every intriguing talk I could. The most memorable was a European Studies Council talk hosted by Seyla Benhabib, featuring Hans Kundnani and Dmitry Kochenov. Before leaving for Germany, I bought Kochenov's "Citizenship" from Barnes & Noble and spontaneously emailed him to request a signature, which he kindly agreed to. We even exchanged some friendly emails after I returned home. That was such a wonderful experience!

During this stay, I managed to develop a daily routine. I would ride my bicycle, visit dining halls for lunch or dinner, attend lectures, or spend time at Book Trader. Through dating apps, I met some new people, one of whom invited me to Mory's, the legendary club and restaurant. Soon after, I met a guy who is now my boyfriend. Our first date was during my second week, and as the weeks passed, we met more frequently. Together, we explored new bars and pubs, and now I can confidently say I know all the good ones in town. My favorite is The Owl on College Street, a cigar lounge with live jazz music every evening. The band that performs on Wednesday nights is my absolute favorite. I feel very nostalgic thinking about those cold nights, sipping wine in that smoky bar—the smoke having a pleasant, almost vanilla-like aroma.

During my stay, I grew attached to New Haven. Though at times I felt out of place—having no official residence, no key to a personal door, and no courses I was officially enrolled in—it was still the only foreign city where I had spent a significant amount of time. New Haven is far from perfect. The city grapples with high levels of crime and homelessness, starkly evident despite being home to a prestigious private university, or perhaps partly because of it. Sirens were a constant background noise, and one night I stumbled upon a crime scene where a shooting had just occurred. On another occasion, I called the police about boys breaking into a car in Wooster Square, only to find they didn’t seem to care.

It would be wrong to idealize New Haven; its imperfections and dangers remind me a lot of my hometown in Germany. Locals often say not to venture past the Popeyes on State Street, as the area becomes increasingly unsafe. Despite this, I spent a week dog-sitting in Beaver Hills and crossed that street several times a day. The change in the neighborhood's atmosphere is indeed stark, but it's possible to fit in if you don’t act overly conspicuous.

However, I miss New Haven deeply. I feel a profound melancholy for the various parts of the city. Wooster Square, where I sampled all the famous American pizzas; East Rock, where I interned, enjoyed walks, and eventually visited my boyfriend; Baker Hall, with its distinct clean, homey, and warm scent, and classrooms where I spent nights reading, writing, or having dinner with my friend; and Beaver Hills, with its grand houses and the adorable greyhound Mango that I cared for.

I am endlessly happy knowing I will return to New Haven sooner or later, especially since my boyfriend's mother lives there. Additionally, my friend recently found a room in a shared flat in Cambridge, Boston, so I hope to explore that area soon as well. To wrap this up, here are some pictures from my stay:

She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1989 and returned to college five years later, earning her master’s degree in social work from Smith College in Northampton, Mass. 

Bubb worked in HR for three years before moving into corporate HR as an organization development manager for Intel in Portland, Ore. She worked there for 15 years and was its vice president and director of global leadership and learning before joining IBM in 2016.

Bubb: Our big insight was to put the employee experience at the center of onboarding. It involves cross-functional work, IT resources, mobility experiences, legal and compliance. It’s a very integrated experience. If each of those groups is evaluated on success alone, they may find they are executing the process well, but the employees may have 10 different experiences from 10 different departments. By shifting our lens, we were able to see gaps in the onboarding experience that were not visible to us before. We learned that people don’t want to wait until they start the job to learn about the company. They want information as soon as they say yes to the job offer.

We try to create onboarding experiences as much in advance as possible so new employees are focused on building personal experiences. We rely on lots of direct observation, design thinking and an empathy map to understand the pain points of onboarding: What are they hearing? What are they feeling, thinking about their user experience?

“Good enough and getting better” is what we shoot for. Waiting until the process is perfect is too late. 

SHRM Online: I understand that IBM reached out to its employees to get their help in designing the learning processes and platforms. Please tell us how IBM did this. Did you use teams, surveys, other methods? 

Bubb: We engage with many constituencies. Among those we reached out to was our Millennial business resource group (BRG)—we have very rich BRGs—to provide feedback and test products and solutions. The same is true for our manager champions and sponsored users. We’ll engage with them, show them prototypes to help us get a product out the door and ask the question, “What’s the experience we’re trying to create?” Our entire learning platform was defined in this way.

SHRM Online: Is IBM involved with community colleges, universities and high schools in helping to create a skills curriculum, and does the curriculum use apprenticeship programs?

Bubb: IBM started P-Tech, a public-private partnership that will serve 125,000 students this year in 13 countries and across at least 10 states. It allows underserved students to earn, at no cost, an associate degree in six years in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

We co-created the curriculum and have internships and mentorships for the students. The partnership has grown to more than 550 businesses that have joined us to design a new talent acquisition channel for different kinds of employees and to create more inclusion in technology.

We work with 19 community colleges, and that partnership includes IBM providing curriculum reviews and in-class subject matter experts. Apprenticeships have been a huge focus since we launched our registered program. We’re scaling it and have apprentices in 24 different roles, including HR, data science, software development and mainframe administration. These are roles that are critical to our business. Our apprentices are a mix of adults switching careers and people just out of school.

My mother has her own reskilling story. She spent the first part of her career in teaching and sales and went back to school to become a network engineer.

SHRM Online: Please tell us about how learning and development informed your own career progression and trajectory.

Bubb: My career was influenced by saying yes to opportunities and being very experience- driven, and it was complemented by my education and learning experiences.

After getting my undergraduate degree, I attended law school for one year then took a break from school and worked for a small startup, where I was an HR department of one.

I had great mentors and coaches and took a lot of certification programs at community colleges to learn the basics of HR. I used my social work background, which had an emphasis on team development, to serve as a consultant working with individuals and families. I also worked with employers on transforming their teams and creating healthy workplaces. 

I returned to HR, working in employee relations, and gained a good foundation and depth in that specialty. My social work experience helped me look systemically at where opportunities and challenges were for employees, and I partnered with leaders to build stronger organizations. Along the way I strengthened my organizational development background. I eventually took a rotational assignment in operational HR, working in customer care call centers for two years. At Intel, I helped build a leadership culture and worked on CEO succession planning and leadership development.

Barclaycard has begun trialling a new payment concept that streamlines the way consumers buy low-value goods by allowing them to scan and pay for their shopping using their smartphone, without the need to visit a physical checkout.

Grab+Go transforms a smartphone into a ‘pocket checkout’, allowing users to simply scan the items they want to buy as they pick them and then complete their purchase with a single click and walk out of a store.

Barclaycard, which has been at the forefront of payments innovation since it introduced the UK’s first credit card in 1966, has developed the concept in a bid to make purchasing and paying quicker and easier for both consumers and merchants.

Users download the Grab+Go app, create an account and pre-load their payment details, and then use their smartphone camera to scan the barcode on items as they go. When finished, they click ‘I’m done’ and walk out; payment is taken seamlessly and invisibly in the background and the receipt is stored in the app.

The technology has been designed to allow consumers and merchants to take advantage of invisible payments –– the practice of removing the payment process from a purchase journey. Commonplace within many mobile apps but not on the high street, it removes the need to enter card details, a PIN, or even swipe or tap for every transaction.

As well as saving shoppers time by removing the need to queue, Grab+Go offers merchants a brand new, additional way of serving their customers and to meet their demand for quicker, easier and more convenient ways of buying goods.

The concept is currently being trialled by Barclays and Barclaycard colleagues in the staff restaurant in London with Northampton, Teesside and Wilmington in the US to follow shortly – ahead of a planned public roll out.

Usman Sheikh, Director of Design & Experimentation at Barclaycard, explains: “One of the key customer frustrations with shopping is the time spent queuing to pay for items they want to buy – especially when they are in a hurry. Using the latest technology, we’ve developed Grab+Go to streamline the shopping experience by removing the need to physically check out every time you want to buy something.

“The way in which people shop and pay has evolved significantly over the past decade, and as the use of mobile and wearable payments grows, we are constantly looking at how we can use technology to make our customers’ lives easier.”

Sheikh  continues: “An important part of this trial will be getting feedback from colleagues, as well as the operators in the staff restaurants, to further develop the product and proposal. Once the final version is complete, it will be available to our clients to help revolutionise payments in their own businesses.”
