Wait wait you know what would be funny. In Sylux’s debut game, we’re introduced to Petrasyls and Quadtroids, obviously knock offs of Metroids because the game needed to justify the series title, yet it wouldn’t make sense for actual Metroids to appear in the Alimbic Cluster. So instead we get these inferior versions that are much easier to deal with.
And now Sylux has returned and will likely shed some light on the origins of Mochtroids in Beyond. So what if another ‘character’ returns in some capacity through these knock-off Metroids. What if Mochtroids are shitty clones of Metroids because the Space Pirates filled in missing DNA with that of Petrasyls and Quadtroids. The bootlegs help create another bootleg. It’d be poetic and meta.
Hell, maybe it was Sylux’s idea! If Petrasyls and Quadtroids are native to the Alimbic Cluster and he spent time there, he might’ve come across them. Maybe he suggested them as gap-fillers to the Space Pirates, or they checked out the Alimbic Cluster after Sylux told them about it and came up with the idea themselves.
And by the time he explained that he already had an actual Metroid that imprinted on him to clone with beta-rays, they were still going through with Mochtroids in case they needed to derive an army from just DNA samples; Which was a scenario that eventually did happen, but alas that solution never came to fruition.

Holy FUCK THERE'S BEEN A NEW DISCOVERY
So get a look at this God damn mother fucking date for Prime 4
Tumblr media
20X9
Why is that date so significant, you may be asking?
WELL YOU WONDERFUL LITTLE BASTARDS, BECAUSE THIS SHIT TAKES PLACE 2 WHOLE YEARS AFTER SUPER METROID (20X7)
THIS IS WHY YOU SEE SYLUX WITH MOCHTROIDS AND NOT REGULAR METROIDS
Tumblr media
You can see there that these floating borbs have one fleshy core and not three. Metroid larvae ALWAYS have 3 cores, while mochtroids - especially in Super - have only one
WHICH MEANS, AND THIS IS WHERE MY AUTISTIC ASS COMES IN TO PREDICT SHIT:
>Sylux came in around 20X7 to steal a metroid, at the end of Fed Force
>He gives it to the Space Pirates, which in turn attempt to replicate it to make more
>In that time, 2 and Super have occurred, and likewise the knowledge that mochtroids can be made through the Gamma replication method is learned
>A few years later THESE MOTHER FUCKERS SHOW UP WITH SYLUX IN TOW TO BEAT THE SHIT OUTTA THE FEDS AGAIN
Now granted this may not be true, and has some inconsistencies between when the games actually take place but HOLY FUCK IF WE GET TO SEE SOME ADVANCED MOCHTROID FUCKERY
I WILL GOD DAMN DIE OF EXCITEMENT
HOLY FUCK

Ya girl is sick and bedridden, so I’m doing some gameplay theorizing. Something I’m curious about for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is how Sylux’s boss battle will actually function. For how cool Sylux is from his design and mystery, Metroid Prime Hunters’s gameplay loop did few favors in making an intriguing combatant. Sylux had the Shock Coil, an electrical weapon which could drain Samus’s energy to replenish his own, and a secondary form that left trip mines in its wake. This is all well and good, but how does you defeat him? You uh… you shoot him. You just shoot him. In Metroid Prime Hunters, the gameplay loop revolves around precise aiming against moving targets, a mechanic that worked well enough for a DS game with a somewhat limited control scheme. However, Metroid Prime 4 is a very different game. Lock on alone makes this approach tedious, especially with the Shock Coil allowing Sylux to regenerate health. Given his intro cutscene, it appears he will have some allies backing him up, at least in the initial encounter. I wonder if it’s possible that the Shock Coil’s siphoning function could be tied to the Metroids-ahem, Mochtroids he has, tethering the electrical arcs to the Mochtroids in order to actually make the attack replenish his own health. There could also be certain environmental hazards to use to your advantage. I could also imagine some sort of evolving state, requiring different beam types to deal damage, similar to the Metroid Prime in the first game. Alternatively, there could be specific timing windows to exploit, utilizing specific opening to rain hell during. Imagine having a narrow window during his energy siphoning attack where you could stun lock him, prevent the attack, and deal significant damage, but getting the timing wrong could punish you with even greater damage and siphoned health.

So what are y'all's thoughts on where Metroid Prime 4 takes place? Initially I thought it was after Federation Force which would place it with the rest of the Prime games, but the presence of Mochtroids makes me think it's some point after Super Metroid/Other M. I guess mochtroids were in the Hunters Demo??? Apparently?? I don't know how canon that is.
Def Not after Dread since Samus is in her Classic Varia, but the Red Ship in the trailer is throwing me off.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
For a hot second I thought the trailer might be an opening prequel to the first Prime game (based on the ship), to give some context on Sylux, but Sylux is clearly leading the charge on the federation here
Tumblr media
Plus the Mochtroids being here kind of decomfirms that idea. Current standing is after Other M and before Fusion, or before Metroid II (the Ridley boss fight in Samus Returns makes the latter messy tho).
Either way I am so so so hype for this

Fun fact, those aren't metroids hanging out with Sylux. They're mochtroids! You see them all the way back in Super Metroid! Here's their pixel art!
Tumblr media
You can tell them apart by the number of nuclei in the membrane. Mochtroids, as you can see in the screenshot, have just one. They're essentially flawed clones of metroids. They can still drain life like a metroid, but aren't nearly as durable and can't grip nearly as strong.
Metroids have three - seen here in both 3D model form and pixel sprites.

Sylux being the villain of Metroid Prime 4 isn't a big deal because it's Sylux specifically. It's a big deal because even after all the development hell, they stuck with their guns. They had this idea over 15 years ago and it hasn't changed.
It's a lot like Metroid Dread, where everyone thought the idea was dead, until it was just suddenly made a reality 20 years after Fusion. It's something I love about this franchise.
Tumblr media
Sylux also brings some interesting lore implications into this game too, which are interesting to talk about. Why is he with the space pirates? Timeline wise we don't see them after this game so what does that mean? Why does he have Mochtroids with him? We know he hatched one in Federation Force, but what is he planning with them?
To those who are annoyed that Sylux is the villain because he's from a side game that most people didn't play, don't worry. There's barely anything to this guy yet. It seems like the team just found him cool and wanted to use him again, which I can understand. Just look at him, he's so cool! I'm always down for new villains in this series anyway. It just makes things more interesting.

Note
I noticed that the two Metroids behind Sylux only have one nucleus
Mochtroids? Or something similar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They sure resemble them!
And apparently Mochtroids appeared as holograms in Prime Hunters First Hunt... the demo of the game Sylux comes from... 🤔

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond theory crafting
So. New Prime 4 trailer (hooray). We now have two trailers under our belt, and while neither gives much away, they got me wondering about the arc of the plot. So with what little we know, I'd like to make a guess at what we'll be seeing, and what connects planet Viewros to Samus and Sylux. Theory under the cut.
In the first trailer, Samus discovers that Sylux, the mystery bounth hunter from Hunters, who made significant cameos in Corruption and Federation Force, with a force of Metroids (though as many commentators have pointed out, the single nucleus means it may be a Mochtroid, a failed Metroid clone first seen in Super.
Tumblr media
(While I'll be covering quite a few elements from the trailer, I'm only including pictures for ones where visual elements are relevant to my theory.)
In the second trailer, Samus is transported to the planet Viewros in a burst of light. Viewros is home to the ruins of an alien people called the Lamorn, one of which we see later in the trailer. These Lamorn greatly resemble the Luminoth from Echoes, though this is not so relevant for my purposes. They have tentacled heads with visible brains, resembling the Metroid Prime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see a tentacled alien with a green membrane which are hostile to Samus. They somewhat resemble the Reptilicus from Corruption, which IS slightly relevant for this theory.
Tumblr media
(I think they're called the Acort or The Cohort, but it's hard to tell with the way the narrator delivers the line. Banger character design though.)
Metroid-like green membranes keep popping up as the trailer goes on. The trailer quickly shows several boss enemies (including what surprisingly seems to be an Omega Pirate from Prime 1.) A shot of a Metroid is immediately followed by a large organ that looks like a Metroid larva opening like a giant eye.
Tumblr media
We also get to see a Flaahgra-esque giant plant attacking Samus, with its weak spot being a green membrane, though I admit it's not totally clear with the video quality.
Tumblr media
Why do so many life forms of Viewros look like Metroids? Good question. Before we can get to that, I need to get to the second important part of this theory.
Much of the discussion around Beyond after the first trailer came out assumed that time travel would be involved. I wasn't convinced due to a lack of information, and the evidence is still scanty, but here's why it might be so:
The title "Beyond" could evoke jumping through time.
Samus is transported to Viewros through what seems to be a portal. This bit of evidence is the most common one I've seen, but Samus has been through strictly space-crossing portals in past games, so this isn't a clincher by any means.
The game's logo resembles a black hole, which in real life bend spacetime around them due to their incredible mass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. If it really is the same Omega Pirate (or the Phazon Elite, a similar looking boss from Prime 1), which was killed on Tallon IV, then it's possible the encounter takes place in the series' past. This is the strongest evidence so far, tenuous as it is.
So we have a planet of creatures that resemble Metroids, and the possibility of time travel in the plot. Let these elements coalesce into a proper theory.
Sylux, in the game's opening, attacks with an army of Metroids. Samus confronts them and their Space Pirate allies. Somehow, Sylux pulls out the stops and shoots Samus through time. Not into the past, but into the far future.
In the aftermath of Sylux's attack, Metroids overrun the Federation base and, soon, the planet, wiping out all native life. But with endless years, the Metroids, which have already been demonstrated as being incredibly adaptable to their environment, turn on each other and diversify into difficult niches. The final result is a planet whose entire ecosystem is dominated by evolutionary offshoots of the Metroid species.
The Acort/Cohort and Lamorn's resemblance to Metroids is because they descended from them. In particular, the Lamorn's resemblance to the most intelligent Metroid ever seen, Metroid Prime, speaks to a past as Prime-like life forms. However, something happened to the Lamorn that caused them to become the violent Acort/Cohort, similar to what Phazon corruption did to the Reptilicus of Bryyo.
Samus is recruited (or 'Chosen', as the ethereal life form in the trailer puts it) by the last Lamorn to save her planet. But if Samus returns to her time to defeat Sylux and save the inhabitants of the planet, she will erase the beautiful world that Viewros becomes.
Can she do it? Will she do? Is this on the mark even a little? We will see. But the series is no stranger to ethical dilemmas. These are my thoughts. So let's wait and see.

The Shock Coil Theory
Tumblr media
Sylux’s Shock Coil is a weapon based off of the classic Tesla Coil concept; Thing from which arcs of lightning just shoot out from randomly, usually being drawn to any target(s) that enter range. The Shock Coil is said to be an “unauthorized prototype” that mysteriously disappeared from a Federation laboratory, like the suit he wears.
The phrasing makes it sound as if these were separate incidents; And they also sound a lot like the circumstances in which the Metroid egg was hatched and ‘lost’. Sylux really knows his way around a Federation facility… Furthermore, the fact that the Shock Coil is unauthorized makes me wonder if it’s a banned weapon; Meaning Sylux is wielding blatant evidence of the Federation being shady.
Corruption does mention a Horus Rebellion said to be ‘nasty business’ and it could just be a reference to Warhammer 40k, so I’ve heard, it could also be relevant.
Because to use an example from another piece of media, Star Wars had an Arc Pulse Generator that also functioned like the weaponized Tesla Coil trope…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This thing incinerated victims into ash. Its bolts were drawn to the unique alloy of their armor, but could also be programmed to target other materials as well. Because this armor was made of a unique substance, allies wouldn’t have to worry about being targeted.
What if the Horus Rebellion used a much larger version of the Shock Coil, meant to target multiple people at once? But its use was much less precise, and perhaps accidentally (or not) disintegrated civilians who weren’t supposed to be targeted. Maybe Federation troops were even caught in accidental friendly fire as well.
It could’ve been that the Shock Coil wasn’t tested properly, or maybe it did exactly what it was supposed to. But the wider Federation found out and decried it as a war crime, so the Shock Coil was banned. But some Feds still wanted to use it, so they funded unauthorized development of a perfected, handheld version of the Shock Coil; One that can only target one person at a time, but still deadly, and even capable of draining electricity to refuel itself and whatever it was attached to.
The Shock Coil refuels Sylux’s health whenever they use it; This suggests it drains something from its targets. Given the life force that Metroids drain is meant to be a total enigma, showcasing how advanced and enlightened the Chozo are, the Shock Coil probably relies on bioelectricity. All shocks are just a closed current, a loop, being established for electricity to run through; So the Shock Coil uses neutrinos to close that gap between itself and a target, cycling its and the victim’s bioelectricity in a constant loop the user is shielded from. The victim dies, and their bioelectricity is added to the Shock Coil, which then feeds whatever power suit or other device it’s linked up to.
Corruption also mentioned a Project Dread, whose name was a tongue in cheek reference. But its purpose was to use Metroids as a power source for weapons. If the barren planet and rainforest we see in Beyond are the same area on Sylux’s homeworld of Cylosis, at different points in time? What if the large-scale Shock Coil was used to harvest bioelectricity from the local fauna, in order to fuel whatever the Federation wanted? And this mass death led to the collapse of Cylosis’ ecosystem.
Hell what if they even knowingly murdered a native population for it? Or maybe it was an accident, maybe they didn’t know sapients, Sylux among them, were present beneath the foliage when they swept the Shock Coil across the surface of Cylosis. Maybe they used the power to fuel other weapons to further genocide in a positive feedback loop of destruction.
And the Space Pirates, who have no pretenses of ethics, wanted to do their own take but with Metroids, who can transfer the energy they’ve absorbed into other things if they’re willing; As seen with a Metroid who imprinted on Samus, and used the energy of her enemy to heal her.
Sylux has a Metroid that imprinted on them. They might hate the Space Pirates but they need them to perfect their failed Project Dread, and it’ll be a success because their Metroid will actually obey orders. Maybe they plan to build an enormous Shock Coil, and augment it with the Metroid to absorb all of the life from the Federation, before using that power to finish off what’s left.
This is where the Mochtroids come into play; Just one Metroid is not enough. Mochtroids can drain energy and are obedient; They lack the invulnerability and gripping power of actual Metroids but they don’t need that. Sylux needs energy; Even their own suit’s giant shoulder spikes might function like the Shock Coil, to drain multiple targets at once; Something to pair up with and augment the prototype that Sylux wields. Or the spikes are meant to emphasize the Shock Coil in resemblance.
So why time travel? Does Sylux plan to drain all of this energy to create a super weapon that can stop the Federation’s harvest? In Federation Force, which set up Sylux and their Metroid and the Space Pirates’ continued losses, we got the Doomseye; A giant ship with a giant laser to blow up capital ships.
Tumblr media
Maybe the Space Pirates will build another Doomseye and it’ll be even more powerful with Metroid/Mochtroid and Shock Coil compatibility. Maybe Sylux is here to harvest Cylosis itself, knowing their Homeworld’s fate is sealed regardless, but at least they can be the one to harness their home’s power (because if anyone is entitled to the blessings of Cylosis, if anyone is allowed to make that decision, Sylux is) to destroy the Federation with a weapon to make the Doomseye look like a firecracker. The weapon might not be a traditional laser, but a massive version of the Shock Coil to drain entire cities and fleets with; All as karmic revenge for Cylosis.
The only limitation to hypothetical weapons like that is sufficient power; Phazon could’ve made up for it, but it’s gone now. But vampiric assets can gather so much energy so easily… Normally, the time and power required is better spread out across multiple ships and soldiers, because you don’t need to invest in a cannon when a hammer is sufficient. But what Sylux needs is something to overwhelm the Federation totally and immediately; And with Mochtroids and the Shock Coil, the time and difficulty of acquiring such power has been drastically decreased…
Maybe Sylux dies sacrificing their own energy, which they may have a lot of given their ability to turn into the Lockjaw, to power a weapon to take down their enemies with; It could be the ultimate weapon itself, which while not powered enough for the intended goal, can spite a LOT of Federation ships by obliterating them. So the day is technically saved, the objective technically achieved, but Sylux manages to get a last laugh in by sacrificing a lot of Federation soldiers anyway.
(Sylux also destroys Samus’ gunship because Fuck You and that’s why she has to go back to using the older one from Echoes.)

Samus Returns (the last remake of a Metroid game) was released 8 years ago. Mochtroids seem to return in Prime 4, so we can assume that it probably takes place after Super and maybe has some connections to that game.
I'm just saying. It would be a great time for a Super Metroid remake. Could you imagine the final boss as an actual 3d model. Could you imagine how good Mercury Steam could portray Samus in the cutscenes of this game. Do you think they would leave in the bleeding corpses in the beginning. Crocomire.

MORE METROID BULLSHIT
Alright because I've gotten hyped up on Metroid again, like the autistic fucking gremlin that I am for all things metroid related, let me tell you all about the Metroid
UNDERNEATH THIS BREAK OF COURSE!
LETS START WITH THE BASICS:
SO
WHAT IN THE FUCK IS A METROID???
In the layman's terms, for those just getting into the series either from Dread or the Prime remaster or Prime 4 being REAL: Metroids are little energy parasites that latch onto the heads of their prey to literally suck the life energy out of them in their entirety
Tumblr media
The most important thing to understand is that they are the larval stage of their life cycle
See, when the Chozo were expanding out from their homeworlds, they discovered the vibrant, hollow planet known as SR388 - Ili Agar Nalima, in their language.
And that planet contained the most god-forsaken, horrific parasite to ever exist in the galaxy (right up there with Phazon, which we'll discuss later)
The X Parasite
Tumblr media
See, the X have this horrifying ability to Mimic their host down to the individual strand of DNA and even their memories - like The Thing on fucking steroids. A single X Parasite could infiltrate an organized Galactic society and within weeks, let alone even days, totally convert the populace into more X Parasites.
The Chozo understandably flipped the fuck out and decided the best course of action would be to kill a nuke with another nuke
Enter: The Metroid
The Metroid's lifestyle was made to counter the X Parasite's cycle entirely - As they are utterly immune to the parasitification of their DNA, even outright consuming them entirely should the X pass through their membrane, the Metroids utterly changed the balance of SR388's ecosystem.
Now keep in mind, the Chozo DID understand the implications of an energy-sucking parasite taking over the planet, so when they were first created, they were made only with the intent to have the larvae as just their primary form
Unfortunately, however, there was something the Chozo didn't factor into their creations: their ability to adapt to their environment to an extreme degree
For some reason that's still unknown in the greater metroid canon, Metroids began to evolve, and obtained a life cycle of their own - What were once easily controllable larvae became highly aggressive alphas, betas, gammas, zetas and omegas, and eventually one Queen as well.
Now it's not really known if the Chozo created the Queen with the intent of producing larvae, or if the Chozo mass produced the larvae themselves, but whatever the case was, now they were an uncontrollable animal that had to be sealed away, deeper in the planet itself.
Tumblr media
The biggest thing to note is that this lifecycle gave the metroid an immunity to cold - all larval metroids have an inate weakness to colder temperatures, but metroids past that larval stage on SR388 remain immune or heavily resistant to it.
And this is where the most important thing comes to mind for the metroid.
While All Metroids have an incredible ability to adapt to ANY PLANET'S ATMOSPHERE.
This has allowed their exploitation by other parties and, by extention, the creation of other strains of metroids.
For example, the Mochtroid!
Tumblr media
So in an earlier post I mentioned they're created through Gamma radiation!
THAT IS FUCKING INCORRECT!
It is actually through the use of Beta Radiation!
And they are considered fucking failures!
See, Mochtroids are the results of exposing the baby metroid in Super to Beta Radiation. This can also create actual copies of larval metroids too, but for some reason this had a result of producing Mochtroids too
It isn't exactly stated as to how these Mochtroids are produced, as they could very well just be a failed space pirate experiment to make metroids more akin to their SR388 variant or just attempting to make their own much like the Chozo, but either way, they're real and they're absolutely pathetic.
The biggest thing to note is their singular nuclei, and their very weak grip strength.
Now the Mochtroids we see in the Prime 4 trailer look more akin to normal metroids too, so perhaps this may be a more refined, mass produced version of a mochtroid - like a mass produced jeep, sort of reliable but not as god-tier as the God damn original.
(Car analogy, I know, but bear with me)
But another thing to keep in mind is that metroid morphology will adapt to their atmosphere, as said above, but this can also be a negative for them too
Like the Talon metroid!
See, Talon Metroids have a characteristic to them where they are FAR. FAR WEAKER compared to their Zebes and SR388 variants, but not as weak as a mochtroid
Where Metroids take a shitload of firepower to kill, and need to be frozen to kill, and Mochtroids can just be shot out of the air with a grapple beam, the Talon IV metroid is kind of like a middle ground - you can kill it with conventional arms, but freezing it and firing a missile at it just outright kills it entirely.
Now this could be because of the atmospheric exposure to phazon, but this also resulted in the Hunter Metroid! My Beloved...
Tumblr media
And an artistic concept to boot
Tumblr media
Hunter Metroids developed an adaptation where these mother fuckers hunt from range
No longer do they need to get up close and latch to you when they just fling a tendril at you and just murder your shit in!
They also are just as strong as a Talon IV metroid, however that shouldn't degrade their overall danger
It's very much thought that they're the next step towards the Hatcher Metroid from Prime 3 given their similar appearance, but we'll get to that later.
Eventually in the Phazon Crater, you'll even find Fission Metroids, which are immune to freezing and even split themselves in two as well! And that isn't considering the Metroid Prime, which is a very VERY heavily mutated metroid as well!
The most unique variant is the Aether Metroid imo. It's a Talon Metroid that has adapted to Aether's atmosphere and have this harsh red membrane to them. They're also have the ability to reproduce on their own!!! They have nest structures that incubate their larvae, and these larvae instantly mature through the consumption and exposure to phazon as well! There's also the Dark Metroid but that's an Ing possession we won't cover here.
Prime 3 really deep dives into a metroid life cycle fully exposed to phazon.
The Phaazetroid is a Metroid so heavily exposed to Phazon they're essentially considered a different metroid species with a completely different life cycle.
They start off as miniroids, or little baby metroids
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(These are Infant Metroids from prime 2 but pretend they're miniroids)
Eventually they'll mature and evolve into Phaazetroids, which have a much more unique body shape compared to a normal metroid
Tumblr media
They almost look like Mochtroids, don't they!?
Now eventually these things will evolve again, and we're not sure which ends up next, but eventually a Hatcher Metroid becomes reality - the only metroid in their genus capable of producing eggs
Tumblr media
And then you have the Hopping Metroid, which looks very, oddly similar to the Metroid Prime...
(Unfortunately I ran the image limit here so imagine a funni quadraped little bastard here)
Eventually they evolve into Phazon Hoppers...and then it's implied they eventually become a Metroid Prime themselves, with enough time given to them
Overall, with Prime 4 coming out in 2025, I'd say to expect some more metroid fuckery when it comes to the Space Pirates and Sylux. What those metroids of his may be could very well be a new and refined variant of Mochtroid...or it could be another metroid strain entirely!
But GOD DAMN I can't wait!
Thanks for attending my metroid Ted talk by the way, expect more of this shit eventually.

wait i just realized if prime 4 takes place after federation force because of sylux showing up with mochtroids, what if instead of bringing in other bounty hunters as samus' allies like prime 3 did (as cool as it'd be if spire & noxus pulled up to help deal with the pirates & sylux), they bring back the federation force which have previously successfully combatted the space pirates to help samus clear them out
it could even work as a do-over of samus cooperating with a GF platoon and getting to know each of them like what other M tried, just minus all the adam bullshit and other M's writing as a whole
and since sylux hates the federation and is front-and-center here that's probably setting up another shady fed arc, they could have a whole plot point where samus either has to go against the FF at some point or prime 4 re-uses the deleter plot point (almost definitely not but it'd be cool to see it done in an actually good game) or the FF realizes they're unknowingly forwarding a bad goal so they turn on the federation (and THEN samus fights them before getting caught up on what's going on and why they went rogue?)
