Tribute to Lalita Deulkar, the well-known playback singer and supporting actress of 1940s in Hindi and Marathi films, on her 14th death anniversary today.

Lalita Deulkar was fairly busy as a film singer in 1940s. She was born in 1925 on Lalita Panchami day. She liked music from childhood. Her uncle Pandharinath aka N. Deulkar was a classical singer and she learnt classical singing from Baburao Gokhale.

Her first step into films was as a supporting actress. She acted in Bombay Talkies films including ‘Nirmala’ and ‘Durga’. Thereafter, she turned to playback singing and provided playback for over 60 films. Her duet with Mohammad Rafi “Mohe raja ho le chal nadiya ke paar” from the film “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1948) became very popular in 1948.

She also provided playback in Marathi films including Prabhat’s “Sant Janabai”, “Vitthal Rukmini”, “Mee Daru Sodali”, and “Suhasini”. Her songs had also been recorded by Young India Gramophone Company. Among them, “raanii jaa_uu sakhyaa re, shobhaa paahuusakhyaa re” became quite popular.

In 1949, she married music director Sudhir Phadke and gradually moved away from films. At their wedding, which took place at the Sahitya Parishad hall in Pune, the well-known singer Mohammed Rafi sang the traditional ‘ma.ngalaaShTak’ in the traditional tune but with Hindi words. He had prepared extensively for this in advance. Her notable films as playback singer include Sajan (1947), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948) and Shabnam (1949).

Lalita Deulkar passed away on May 25, 2010.

Krishna Kalle was a well-known figure in the music scene, striving for recognition during the era dominated by Lata Mangeshkar. Alongside artists like Suman Kalyanpur, Mubarak Begum, Kamal Barot, and Sharda, she worked hard to make her mark.

Krishna Kalle is remembered for several hit songs from the '60s and early '70s. Her duets, such as 'Meri Hasraton Ki Duniya' with Mohammed Rafi from the film 'Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi' (1974), and 'Hume To Maar Diya' with Mahendra Kapoor from 'Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain' (1966), remain etched in the memories of old Hindi film song enthusiasts. Her voice graced the soundtracks of notable films like 'Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain' (1966), 'Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein' (1967), 'Raaz' (1967), 'Naunihal' (1967), 'Shikar' (1968), 'Sati Sulochana' (1969), and 'Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi' (1974).

Born in Karwar and raised in Kanpur where her father was stationed, Krishna Kalle absorbed the cultural richness of Hindi and Urdu during her upbringing. At the tender age of 16, she began singing at the Kanpur Radio Station. She gained popularity through her performances at various Yatra music festivals across Uttar Pradesh. In 1957, she received national recognition with youth singing awards from India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and the first prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The following year brought her the All India Sugam Sangeet Award's first prize, the K L Sehgal Memorial’s Golden Voice Award, among others. Subsequently, she joined All India Radio in 1960.

Arun Date first noticed her talent in Mumbai and introduced her to the music director Yashwant Dev, which kickstarted her career as a Marathi singer. Active in the Hindi film industry from the 1960s to the 1970s, she lent her voice to over 200 Hindi and 100 Marathi film songs, as well as numerous bhajans, ghazals, and devotional songs. Her collaborations included non-film albums with renowned artists like Manna Dey and Mohammed Rafi.

The song Jaane wafa Jaane jahaan & Mere Sapnon Ki Rani

Dear SJ friends..!

Today, I thought of picking two of my personal favourite Shankar Jaikishan songs, both are beautiful gems and real masterworks under their golden baton. Both of them share many common features, for instance, they are composed on waltz rhythm; they have three different musical interludes, each of the three presenting a unique musical style and genre, with beautiful prelude; they are picturized on Shammi Kapoor and they both are one of the Rafi sahab’s bests..! The songs are:

1. Jane wafa jane jahan.. Dil Tera Diwana (1962) Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar Shailendra

2. Mere sapnon ki rani.. Jawan Mohabbat (1971) Mohammed Rafi Hasrat Jaipuri

The “Jaane wafaa jaane jahan..” is a famous Lata-Rafi romantic duet from the musical ‘Dil Tera Diwana'. It’s a dream sequence song, where Shammi Kapoor dreams himself and Mala Sinha as lovers of three different time period and culture, each represented by a specific interlude music.

The song starts with a beautiful 50 minutes long prelude commencing the dream sequence. The whole composition in mukhda and stanzas is extraordinary and outstanding, where each stanza is preceded by a distinct interlude depicting three different scenarios. The first one is western lovers interlude with charming violin themes and waltz rhythm. The second one is an Arabian lovers interlude with brilliant use of percussion, flute, bells and group violins. And lastly, the third one, an Indian lovers interlude, with delightful sitar theme on brisk tabla beats.

Everything about the song is mesmerizing, including composition, orchestration, singing, picturization, performance etc. We all know that SJ were masters of such dream sequence songs, and this is a perfect example...!

The second masterwork “Mere sapnon ki raani..” is a romantic Rafi solo with a situation of musical stage show, where Shammi Kapoor tries to find her dream girl amongst the ladies from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds and finally succeeds getting Asha Parekh, which actually is shown in an immediately following small seperate Rafi-Asha duet.

The song starts with SJ’s beautiful signature violins prelude, followed by three distinct and creative interludes, first in a classic western style, second in an exotic arabian style and the third in unique Hawaiian style, and I just love them all..! Each interlude is preceded by an opening theme on trumpet and orchestra, and each one have a unique awesome theme using different instruments. The compositions in mukhda and stanzas too are equally intoxicating and in a typical SJ-Shammi style.

What a mastery SJ have shown in such theme related lengthy songs..!

Today is the Anniversary of Mohammed Rafi the Elvis Presley of India, whose voice brought to life hundreds of melodies, was born in a village Kotla Sultan Singh near Amritsar long before India attained its independence. But music training beckoned him to Lahore where he cut his musical teeth under the hawk-like eye of Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan. He made his singing debut in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch by rendering a duet with Zeenat Begum, 'Soniye Ni Heeriye Ni' composed by Shyamsunder.

Wadia Movietone was a prominent film company and it was Homi Wadia who saw the talent in Mohammed Rafi and insisted that he sing for his forthcoming film Sharbati Ankhen under the Music directorship of Feroz Nizami. The voice of Mohammed Rafi encompassed a tremendous range, which is unparalleled. The peculiar trait that separates a playback singer from a classical vocalist is not the range or ability as a singer but the voice quality. With Mohammed Rafi it was the ultimate combination that helped him reign supreme in the field of playback singing. His voice quality combined with his unsurpassed range made him stand apart from his contemporaries.

His voice suited any genre of music be it a moving ghazal like 'Aap Ke Pehloo Main Aakar Ro Diye', a plaintive bhajan like 'O Duniya Ke Rakhawale', or a wild and whacky Shanker-Jaikishan composition like 'Chahe Koi Mujhe Jungle Kahe'. Mohammed Rafi added his delectable nuances to the melody and made it immortal. His voice had this unique feature of screen adaptability and when it merged with his intelligence as a singer it helped him to tailor his voice across an array of faces that remain entrenched in our memory books. Comedian Johnny Walker had a voice that was queerly rounded. Mohammed Rafi's take on him was phenomenal in songs like 'Sar Jo Tera Chakraye' under S D Burman in 'Pyasa' and 'Aye Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yaha' from 'CID'. Mohammed Rafi managed to sound exactly like Johnny Walker would if he sang the song himself. Rafi summoned Johnny Walker a day or two prior to the song picturization and then contributed his bit to add to the character Johnny Walker played on screen.

Actors like Biswajit (Pukarta chala hoon main), Bharat Bhushan (Zindagi Bhar Nahin Bhoolegi Woh Barsaat Ki Raat), Joy Mukherjee (Bade Miyan Deewane) are remembered more for the songs that were picturized on them with Rafi lending his golden voice to their average acting abilities.

Mohammed Rafi was known for his altruistic behavior, which was exhibited on several occasions. He has been known to charge just a token amount as his fees for singing songs of Music Directors who could not afford his regular charges. Many times Mohammed Rafi has sung songs without charging a single penny to the Music Directors. A case in point is the film 'Aap Ke Deewane' with which actor Rakesh Roshan began his phase as a Producer-Director. Rafi sang the title song of the film but did not charge any money because he felt that he liked the song a lot and after all, it was only a line, which he had to render. Very few singers were known to be so good at heart. This innate goodness in him came to the fore when he sang most of his songs.

In his glorious career, Mohammed Rafi won the coveted Filmfare Award of best playback singer no less than six times. He was also decorated with the Padmashri by the Government of India. With the advent of Kishore Kumar as a major singing sensation Rafi Sahab's career received a slight jolt in the late 60s and the early 70s but he bounced back with verve in films like Sargam, Karz, Hum Kisise Kam Nahin, Poonam and his last song under the baton of Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the film Aas Paas. He succumbed to the dreaded heart-attack on the 31st of July 1980 -ironically the man was a teetotaler and a non- smoker. He was in his mid-fifties.

His funeral procession was one of the largest that the city of Mumbai has ever witnessed. The world of music lost one of its brightest luminaries on 31st July 1980 but his melodious voice still stops music lovers in their tracks. Tribute to Mahendra Kapoor, one of Hindi cinema's most prominent singers, on his 11th death anniversary. Mahendra Kapoor, who dominated the golden age of Hindi film music for a pretty long time, was born in Amritsar on January 9, 1934, belonging to a family of cloth dealers. The family shifted to Bombay when he was still very young. Interested in music since childhood, he trained under stalwarts like Ustad Meherji, Ustad Niyaz Ahmad Khan and Pandit Tulsidas Sharma. In Bombay, Mahendra Kapoor studied at St. Xavier’s School Bombay and auditioned for All India Radio but was rejected! However, he got his first break when Music Director Snehal Bhatkar got him to sing Tere Dar Ki Bheekh Maanti Hai Daata in Diwali Ki Raat (1956). That year he also sang a song in Lalkar (1956), Is Man Ki Nagaria Se. with Sabita Banerjee but made no waves with his singing. A big fan of Mohammed Rafi, he finally came to the fore in the 1957 when he won The Metro Murphy All-India talent singing competition. Among the judges of the competition were eminent Music Directors Naushad, Anil Biswas, Madan Mohan, Vasant Desai and C Ramchandra. Naushad gave him the song Chand Chhupa aur Taare Doobe to sing for Sohni Mahiwal (1958) starring Bharat Bhushan and Nimmi, Vasant Desai gave him a chance to sing in Schoolmaster (1959), Anil Biswas gave him the duet Stella O Stella from Char Dil Char Rahen (1959). Subsequently, the song from V.Shantaram’s Navrang, “Aadha hai chandrama raat aadhi” sung under the baton of C.Ramchandra became a hit, as did Dhool ke phool numbers like Tere pyar ka aasra chahata hoon”, sung under the baton of N. Dutta for B.R. Chopra. Then, came songs like Chalo Ek Bar Chalo (Gumraah), Neele Gagan Ke Tale (Humraaz) and many others, which made him a household name. In a career spanning five decades, his repertoire extended to songs in Hindi as well as various regional languages. His name however became most closely associated with patriotic songs including ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ in Manoj Kumar’s film Upkaar. His voice has always been associated with Manoj Kumar. His many songs filmed on Manoj Kumar, most of them patriotic are a lot popular. He was a religious soul and had sung many Bhajans too. Apart from his National and Filmfare Awards, Mahendra Kapoor was a recipient of the Padma Shri from the Government of India and the Lata Mangeshkar Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh. He also won the Punjab State award thrice and the Gujarat State Award an incredible six years in a row! Mesmerizing the nation with his melodious voice for more than five decades, he died of a heart attack at the age of 74 on September 27, 2008 in Mumbai. Mahendra Kapoor is no more but his songs like 'Mere Desh Ki Dharthi' will keep him alive in the hearts of countless music lovers across generations.

2) Mohammed Aziz

Even though the majority of the people would not be able to recall him by his name but its quite sure that everyone must be able to remember the famous song My Name is Lakkhan from Ram Lakkhan. Yes, exactly it was he who lent his voice to Anil Kapoor for that famous song. Not only his fans, but a huge portion of the population also used to tap their boots on the beats of this great song. He started his work in the industry with Anu Malik and after that went on to work with some of the several noteworthy music composers of the Indian industry such as Usha Khanna, Bappi Lahiri, etc. He tasted success at the initial; stages of his career itself but somehow failed to fulfill the potential and was not able to take the career forward in this profession. He was nominated twice for the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Once for Dil Tera Kisne Toda(Dayavan) and for the second time for My Name is Lakkhan(Ram Lakkhan).

3) Shailender Singh

The singer whose voice was once considered to be pure liquid gold, Shailender Singh was the brilliant voice in the very popular and loved song Jane Do Na (Saagar). Not denying the fact that the song was not good but it was his voice that definitely made the song even better. He entered the Bollywood world with a bang, he started his career with the movie Bobby in which he sang a total of five songs. Throughout his time in Bollywood, he earned a lot of appreciation and love for his melodious voice and great talent. He had worked with some of the greatest composers of that time like R.D Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and also sang duets with the legendary Amit Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and many more. After the year 1979, his struggle phase began in the industry and his name soon faded away from the industry.
