BITCHES ITS SPOOKY SEASON!

Hey guys! This past month our Coalition has been writing our latest Competition: Monsterstuck! Yall should join us in reading and voting from now until October 1st! You can choose between Scariest Monster, Angstiest Injury or Death Scene, Best in Executing a Twist, and more!

There were 12 entries in total, featuring a wide variety of monsters (both scary, and not!) List below the cut for yall to check out.

POV: You are on a coffee date with Dave

Eridan cleared his throat.

"Hella Jeff?" 

"Uhuh," Dave glanced up, then back down at his phone. "Sweet Bro, too. Here." He turned his phone around and held it out to Eridan.

On Dave's phone was a an extremely grotesque and crudely drawn comic, in which two characters, which Eridan could only assume was "Sweet Bro" and "Hella Jeff" engaged in the Charlie Brown football gag, complete with the entire Peanuts strip hyper-compressed in the middle of it, terminating with the red-clad man being minced by helicopter blades. Eridan nodded slowly, parsing it.

"I get it." Eridan said, after taking another moment to think.

"You do?" Dave asked, sounding genuinely surprised.

"What are they talking about, now?" Kanaya whispered to Vriska, watching from across the coffeeshop.

I haven't done much yet with story or anything

The Good, The Bad, and The Alternative: a homestuck fanfic. Chapter 21, an excerpt.

"Sorry-" Rose interrupted the rush of stress-tinged words. "Fighting those vampires ?"

Jade blew out her cheeks and suddenly looked guilty. "Yeah… There was a lot that happened after I came back from Faerie. I ended up in some mountains near one of Dr. Lalonde's labs, and I accidentally stumbled into a pack of vampires after I got lost and sent Bec to find the nearest town. The worst part about the shield was that it knocked me over! I guess it also blasted the heck out of that vampiric centaur, but I wish a shield spell didn't hurt me , y'know?"

"They were trying to kill you?" Rose asked, horrified. Her mind presented Vriska lunging at her, fangs long and gleaming, toxic yellow venom flying from her mouth… She recalled the deep, bone-aching bruises Kanaya had left on John. Jade had been attacked by a pack of them?

"Well, they definitely wanted to drink my blood. I suppose it’s possible they would’ve kept me alive for future meals, but I wasn't about to take any chances. Grandpa always said surrender was just a way to prolong your death. Being a walking bloodbag… he’s shown me autopsy reports. It isn’t pretty." Jade said.

Rose recalled the rifle strapped to Jade's duffel when she arrived at the basement lab.

"Jade, did you… kill those vampires?" Rose asked hesitantly.

Dave wondered if he would spend the rest of his life afraid.

I mean, it makes sense. Animals wanna live, why wouldn't you be afraid of shit that could kill you. He thought. Guess the human brain didn't catch up to everything that came after higher level thinking, though, now I'm afraid of shit like flopping on soundcloud, the vastness of the universe, and also microwaves.

He wondered if any pedestrians would take the sick Stiller shades off his corpse.

It was a good run. He thought. I came, I swagged, I died handsome.

The air rushing past him as he fell from the roof of his umpteenth story apartment building was indifferent to this cool guy's mortal musings.

Some onlookers at the street level gasped and pointed in horror as they saw his small form plummeting.

...

Falling to his death was taking forever. I guess what everyone said about your life flashing before your eyes was sorta true. Nobody says what happens when you're young and the death is taking a proportionally long time. Turns out you can basically chill after all the other stuff is over.

Dave turned over in the air and saw the ground. Oh, now it was approaching much too quickly. He let out an undignified shriek and started flailing.

He heard a nasally masculine voice over the wind suddenly.

"Oh of course now you decide to start flailing."

Dave felt something sharp close around either of his biceps and grip tightly.

"God?" Dave asked.

"Close enough." The voice responded. Dave decided he didn't like God's tone very much.

John narrowed his eyes at Rose as well, and Rose glanced between him and Jade. After a second, she broke, letting out a defeated laugh.

"I believe I see the family resemblance now." she said. "Thought I'm curious when you all found time to plan th-"

Dave let out a choking noise that sounded somewhere between a hiccup and a gasp and a burp.

"Woah, dude, are you alright?" John asked, taking a step towards Dave, who'd doubled over.

He held up a hand, taking a deep breath.

"What'd you just say?" Dave asked, looking at Rose. She blinked a few times, confused.

Jade realized it a split-second before Rose did.

"Dave! We never told you!" Jade shouted, catching the attention of some passerby. She winced at herself, continuing at a more reasonable volume. "Gosh, I guess with everything happening, we forgot."

Dave's eyes were wide, his mouth pressed into a thin line.

"Forgot... What exactly? Just run that by me real quick." he said.

"Dave, me and Jade are related." John said, gesturing at her. "Her dad was my grand-uncle. We're, uh, demigods."

"My grandmother is the Empress of Magic." Jade said quietly.

Dave's expression was unreadable.

Rose's expression was... Frighteningly curious. She was staring Dave down like a snow owl watching a mouse decide whether or not to leave its burrow.

"You made no remarks upon their physical familiarity with each other, Dave." she said. "What did you believe was occurring?"

Dave coughed, then disappeared in a blur. He reappeared a short distance away trying to reenter the apartment building, frantically jamming the code into the keypad. He was too slow. In three long strides, Rose was on him, blocking the doorway with her wingspan.

Jade looked at John. He shrugged.

"Nothing! What's some bicep stroking between long lost friends! Get your hands off me!" Dave struggled against Rose's implacable, pneumatic social pressure as she herded him back to the group.

Jade looked at Dave expectantly, though he seemed to be more worried about John's concerned stare by the way he pointed his shaded eyes away from her cousin.

"Well," Rose prompted from behind him, "tell us. You're among friends."

Dave glanced around for another escape route.

"Dave, what's wrong?" Jade asked. At her side, Bec barked, in a way Jade thought was encouraging, but Dave jumped at the sound.
