The Jewish World War I Hero: Benjamin Kaufman
His right arm shattered, Ben threw grenades with his left hand.
Benjamin Kaufman was a Jewish World War I hero who received the Medal of Honor for his exceptional bravery on the battlefield.
Born in 1894 to Russian parents, Ben grew up in Brooklyn, the youngest of nine. He lived in a tough neighborhood, and had to learn to fight. “Unless you could fight in East New York in Brooklyn at that time, you just didn’t have a chance,” Ben later said.
Ben became a talented boxer. He was kicked out of high school for breaking the football captain’s nose, but enrolled in a different high school and excelled, earning a scholarship to Syracuse University. In college, he couldn’t stop fighting and finally left to become a professional baseball player.
In 1917, Ben joined the army and and was assigned to the 77th Division, 308th Infantry, Company K. The 77th had the largest number of Jewish soldiers, and still holds the record for the most number of languages spoken in any military division in modern history. Ben quickly became a sergeant, but refused officer training because he didn’t want to leave Company K. He was so popular with his men that he became known as “best top kick” – slang for First Sergeant – in the U.S. Army.
When Ben faced anti-semitism, he would go out of his way to do something nice for the offender, often winning over his enemy with kindness.
Ben’s unit was sent to France in March 1918.  It didn’t take long for Ben to show his heroic mettle. In one of his first battles, his unit was being attacked with toxic gas. The men were hiding in small dugouts. When one dugout collapsed under heavy fire, a soldier was trapped underneath the rubble. Ben took off his bulky gas mask so he could save his comrade. At this point, a shell exploded right in front of him, partially blinding him. Ben refused medical help but was taken against his will to a hospital. As soon as he could, Ben borrowed a uniform and headed back to his unit. Ben was threatened with court-martial for leaving the hospital without authorization but ultimately was allowed to return to the front.
On October 4, 1918, while serving in an advance detail in the Argonne, Ben and his men came under heavy attack. Two of his men were wounded by German machine gun fire but were unreachable. Ben’s right arm was shattered when he was struck by a bullet. Despite his injury, Ben continued advancing on the enemy, throwing hand grenades with his left hand. He reached the German position and captured an enemy soldier. Ben managed to transport the German prisoner to the American line. He revealed the location of the German army before fainting from loss of blood. The information Ben relayed enabled the American army to continue moving forward.
In recognition of his bravery in battle, Ben was awarded the Medal of Honor – the country’s highest military decoration – on April 8, 1919. The citation said, “He took out a patrol for the purpose of attacking an enemy machinegun which had checked the advance of his company. Before reaching the gun he became separated from his patrol and a machinegun bullet shattered his right arm. Without hesitation he advanced on the gun alone, throwing grenades with his left hand and charging with an empty pistol, taking one prisoner and scattering the crew, bringing the gun and prisoner back to the first-aid station.”
In addition to the Medal of Honor, Ben received nine international awards for bravery, including the prestigious Croix de Guerre.
After the war, Ben became an active civic leader in Trenton, NJ. He directed many organizations including Disabled American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans, and the National Legion of Valor. At age 48, he tried to enlist to fight in World War II, but was rejected due to his age. He died at age 86 in 1981.
For serving his country with great distinction, we honor First Sergeant Benjamin Kaufman as this week’s Thursday Hero.

Hey all. Me and my entire apartment complex are raising money to help the most urgently in need among us, and pay litigation fees to go after our property management company in court.
(The lawyers representing us are doing so at no charge.)
Said property management company has been continuing to rent units in our complex despite serious HVAC and plumbing issues. We've had heat and water shutoffs constantly during this winter, and it culminated at the beginning of this month in them asking everyone on the ground floor to vacate with a 30 day notice.
A little over a week later they sent out a retraction, saying that no one needed to move out, although they'd allow anyone who had already found new housing to end their lease with no penalty.
Then they tried, halfway through the month, to make everyone leave with three days' notice instead, claiming that they couldn't repair the heat and it wasn't safe for us to keep living here.
They sent out that notice on a Friday afternoon, mind you--making it even more difficult to get moving or storage arranged or contact any other leasing offices.
This wasn't legally enforceable, they didn't offer any alternate housing or help finding new permanent housing (at least not until people started threatening to sue), and now they're aggressively trying to get us to break up our collective organizing.
My roommates and I are okay--we're in the group that originally was told to leave and had been planning to move out anyway. But it's still been an incredibly stressful and disruptive experience.
Many of our former neighbors are in much worse situations and could really use help.

Cause-Effect
Toys listed in the Cause Effect Category are selected because they best facilitate the teaching of basic cause-effect. Cause-Effect is an early language concept where and individuals learns that if they do something, there will be a direct result. Such as, if I press a button, a toy will play. When I stop pressing the button, the toy will stop. Toys that continue to play after a switch is released are not suited for teaching this concept, but are engaging and fun once an individual understands Cause-Effect concept. Cause-Effect is a precursor to language development. Cause-Effect language is important because it allows a person to effectively communicate causative relationships between events.
We have several people who help keep our company running, including a retired Air Force veteran who adapts our devices and the mom of a child with disabilities who provides friendly customer support. Pine Island and Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park
Tumblr media
This is Part 2 of Bayport and Pine Island: Part of Hernando County’s Gift to the Nature Coast. Part 1 may be found by clicking on the link. Pine Island Alfred A. McKethan Park is just a boat ride or short drive away from Bayport and features the only public Gulf beach in Hernando County.  Mr. McKethan was influential in the improvements made to what is now Cortez Boulevard, and the only road onto the island: Pine Island Drive. In 1950, the sole residents on Pine Island were the Mr. and Mrs. Plummer, who ran a commercial fishing business.  By the 1960s, their business was closed, possibly due to the purchase of all the land there by a Tampa company. History of Pine Island Housing development started mostly in the early 1960s, and as of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 64.  That number had not changed from the previous census, so speculation is that it won’t increase much for the 2020 census.  However, during a very recent visit to Pine Island, I did see several “For Sale” signs on open lots.  Pine Island Alfred McKethan Park is surrounded by water on three sides. The drive out Pine Island Drive is beautiful. The beach is white sand. Image courtesy of Hernando County. The park sits on three acres, surrounded on three sides by water where sea grasses, fish and crabs enjoy the salt marsh and estuary.  The white sand is so nice to feel between your toes, build a castle, run through, or just sit on.  The tide changes, so it is good to check the times before wading out too far. Pine Island Park Gets a Facelift after Hurricane Idalia Damage Pine Island Park was temporarily closed for significant repairs due to Hurricane Idalia. The storm caused major damage to the infrastructure of Pine Island Park. Staff worked diligently with a local contractor to complete storm damage repairs. Significant renovations to Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park were completed on March 28, 2024, including the playground area. Image courtesy of Hernando County Parks & Rec Department. Hernando County Parks and Recreation officially reopened Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park on March 28, 2024. Normal operation hours are 8:30 am to sunset, 7 days a week. The parking fee is still $5 per car, payable by credit card only. Handicapped placards and Disabled Veterans are exempt from parking fees at all Hernando County parks. No RVs, buses, or trailers are permitted at the park. Storms come in fast at Pine Island. Image by Diane Bedard. An Introduction to the Gift of Pine Island My first experience here was on a hot, sunny day in mid-July of 1988.  It was my second day in Hernando County after driving down from Minnesota.  A soon-to-be co-worker gave me a brief tour of Brooksville and then we headed out to the beach.  The small beach was very crowded, but no one was actually in the water!  I waded in and immediately felt it was where I wanted to be.  Suddenly a man’s voice called out “Ma’am, please come out of the water; there’s a storm coming in.”  It was the lifeguard.  I looked west, and sure enough, there were dark, ominous clouds moving towards us.  The warm water and beautiful view made me want to stay at Pine Island. Image by Diane Bedard. There are no lifeguards now at the Park, so be mindful of the weather and tides! Where would I be if that lifeguard had not been there that day in 1988?  But enough about me. Pay your 5 bits to park at Pine Island Alfred A. McKethan Park at the colorful entrance booth. It helps maintain the park and provide park services. Image by Deanna Kimbrough Pine Island Beach Park Visitor Information Pine Island Beach Park is currently open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset daily and has a $5 per vehicle parking fee, payable by credit card.  The parking lot will accommodate about 100 cars, depending on the size and the precision of the driver (you know how parking lots can be).  Willy's Tropical Breeze Cafe is located in Pine Island Park Willy’s Tropical Breeze Cafe is currently open, serving burgers, wraps, hotdogs, and fried seafood, along with a variety of beverages and ice cream.  Public restrooms are available and there are picnic tables and barbeque grills.  A sandy volleyball court and a fully renovated, nautical-themed children’s playground are available.  Make sure to do a dolphin watch from the observation deck.  Willy’s Tropical Breeze Cafe is open at Pine Island for grabbing a cold drink or fast meal. There are restrooms, picnic tables, barbecue grills, a playground, and a sand volleyball court as part of the fun amenities at Pine Island Alfred A. McKethan Park in Hernando County. Image by Deanna Kimbrough. No Pets Allowed at Pine Island Park People ask if dogs are allowed.  Even though the park used to be pet-friendly every other Saturday morning, the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department decided safety was an issue and ended that opportunity, so no pets are allowed. The Park has been a special place to watch the sunset while enjoying a Drum Circle.  But the group, known for playing hand drums and percussion instruments, had stopped during the social distancing time.  Hopefully, they will return soon. Sunsets at Pine Island are dramatic. It is a great place for dolphin spotting, also. Image by Diane Bedard. Get out and Enjoy the Gift of Pine Island Park Today The beach at Pine Island Park is an amazing place to have a picnic, relax, and watch a sunset, alone or with family and friends.  It can also be a stunning venue for weddings.  The whole park has been renovated and continues to bring joy to young and old. Enjoy the gift that is a beach this summer.  Practice friendly sharing, wear sunscreen, be mindful of the tides, do not feed the animals, do not litter, and keep an eye on the weather!  Read the full article

Wheelchair transportation In Seattle
Seattle is a bustling city with a vibrant and active population. However, for those who are unable to walk due to disabilities, accessing the city can be a challenge. Wheelchair transportation in Seattle is an essential service that provides people with disabilities the ability to move around the city and participate in community activities.
Tumblr media
The city of Seattle offers a variety of wheelchair transportation options, including public transit and paratransit services. Public transit in Seattle is accessible to people who use wheelchairs, with buses and trains equipped with ramps and designated seating areas. Paratransit services, such as Access Transportation, are also available for individuals who are unable to use regular public transit due to their disabilities. These services provide door-to-door transportation and can be scheduled in advance.
Tumblr media
In addition to public transit options, there are also private wheelchair transportation companies in Seattle that offer services such as non-emergency medical transportation and specialized transportation for events and outings. These companies have specially-equipped vehicles that can accommodate wheelchairs and provide a comfortable and safe ride for individuals with disabilities.
One such company is Seattle Wheelchair Transportation, which provides non-emergency medical transportation and transportation for events and outings. Their vehicles are equipped with wheelchair ramps and lifts, as well as secure restraints to ensure the safety of their passengers. They also have trained and experienced drivers who are knowledgeable about wheelchair transportation and can provide assistance with loading and unloading wheelchairs.
Tumblr media
Another private wheelchair transportation company in Seattle is Beyond Ride, which offers non-emergency medical transportation, transportation for events and outings, and transportation to and from airports. Their vehicles are also equipped with wheelchair ramps and lifts, as well as secure restraints and comfortable seating. They also have trained and experienced drivers who can assist passengers with their needs.
In addition to these private companies, there are also ride-sharing services in Seattle that offer wheelchair-accessible transportation. Beyond Ride, both offer wheelchair transportation in Seattle with accessible vehicles, which can be requested through their respective apps. These vehicles have ramps or lifts and can accommodate passengers in wheelchairs.
Tumblr media
While Seattle offers a variety of wheelchair transportation options, there are still challenges that individuals with disabilities face in accessing transportation. One challenge is the availability of wheelchair-accessible vehicles, as not all buses and trains are equipped with ramps or lifts. In addition, paratransit services may not be available in all areas of the city, and private wheelchair transportation companies may have limited service areas.
Another challenge is the cost of wheelchair transportation, as it can be expensive for individuals with disabilities who rely on these services regularly. Public transit in Seattle is free for individuals with disabilities, but paratransit services and private wheelchair transportation companies can be costly. Some organizations and programs, such as Medicaid and the Department of Veterans Affairs, may provide funding for wheelchair transportation, but these may not be available to everyone.
Tumblr media
Despite these challenges, wheelchair transportation in Seattle is essential for individuals with disabilities to access the city and participate in community activities. The availability of public transit, paratransit services, and private wheelchair transportation companies provides individuals with disabilities the ability to move around the city and engage with their community. The city of Seattle needs to continue to support and invest in these services to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to transportation.

Useful Information Update About South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
A national government organization called the South African Social Security Administration (SASSA) was set up in April 2005 to disburse social benefits on behalf of the Department of Social Development. The DSD oversees the Agency but has no operational authority over it. Additionally, it aims to move South Africa's provinces' responsibility for social security under the purview of the national government, under the Department of Social Development (DSD). Busisiwe Memela - Khambula is the company's current CEO. Schedule 3A of the Public Financial Management Act designates SASSA as a public institution.
The processing of applications, application verification and approval, payment of benefits to qualified recipients, quality assurance, fraud prevention, and detection are among the parastatal's primary responsibilities in relation to the administration and payment of social benefits.
The number of South Africans receiving social aid rose from 3.8 million in April 2001 to 11 million in March 2006 and 17 million in 2017. Between May 2020 and April 2021, millions of South Africans received short-term special social assistance payments owed to COVID-19.
Types of subsidies
Different sorts of benefits are offered as social benefits, including:
allowance for seniors (old-age pension) child support Allowance for caregiving. Allowance (if you live on welfare yet need someone to take care of you) (if you live on welfare but need someone to take care of you) allowance for veterans. a payment for adoption. Allowance for disability. For people in immediate need, social assistance in difficult times might take the shape of packages or coupons. Prior to this, the administration of social benefits was the responsibility of each of the nine province governments. However, this caused significant delays and other implementation problems. Due to inhumane payment procedures, high administrative expenses, and the possibility of fraud and corruption in the system used for benefit approval and payment, social benefits festivals may result.
Out of the R155.3 billion allotted for social welfare in 2015, R53.5 billion was set aside for retirees, R47.8 billion for child support, R20.2 billion for disability payments, R8.5 billion for other awards, and the remaining R15.3 billion was used for administration and operations.
Work
A 5-year, Rs. 10 billion contract was given to Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), a division of Net1 UEPS Technologies, to distribute social benefits on behalf of SASSA beginning in January 2012. The Constitutional Court invalidated the offer in 2014 after concluding that AllPay, a competing contractor, had followed illegal procedures. However, the suspension of the judgment allowed SASSA to reopen the procurement process without interfering with pension payments.
The National Treasury puts the sum to be paid into the Nedbank trust account once every month. The state receives any interest generated throughout this time period. Grindrod Bank is the repository for all beneficiary accounts.
Grant recipients may withdraw their benefits without incurring any fees from any SASSA payment location in the country. According to Net1 CEO Serge Belamont, these withdrawals are more secure because biometric security checks are trained on fingerprints. Grant recipients may also withdraw their benefits from an ATM or from specific merchants like Pick n Pay, which has partnered with another Net1-owned company called EasyPay to make these withdrawals possible.
Grant beneficiaries may get loans through Moneyline, another Net1 business. Grant recipients may use credit to buy airtime for their mobile phones via Umoya Manje, another business operated by Net1.
Financial crisis
A ministerial working committee determined in December 2014 that SASSA should handle grant payments on its own. By deciding to source the funding in 2017, SASSA filed a fresh proposal in 2015 but did not award it.
Because legal criteria were breached, re-registering benefit recipients required extra, non-recurring spending for the 2015–2016 fiscal year, which SASSA reflected in the CPS contract.
Pravin Gordhan, the then-finance minister, advised Bathabile Dlamini, the minister of social development, to award a new contract to South African commercial banks and the South African Post (SAPO), forgo biometric identification, and demand a contract that disadvantages other contractors in comparison to CPS.
This proposal was, however, turned down on the grounds that the biometric system eliminated fraud claims totaling R2 billion per year; further work to eliminate duplicate entries could save an additional R2 billion per year; SAPO lacked a banking license; and there weren't enough post offices to distribute the benefits properly.
Dlamini said that he wanted to continue working with CPS until SASSA is ready to take over since there is a lower chance of SASSA not being able to make subsidy payments in this scenario.
She noted that the Department has already finished the first half of its four-phase plan, which will end in 2019 with the transfer of duty to the SASSA, and that the process of awarding funds via the SASSA is well under way. SASSA.
Dlamini said in 2017 that it was only in October 2016 that she discovered SASSA would likely no longer be able to collect assistance payments starting in April 2017.
According to SASSA's estimations, CPS would get around Rs 3.5 billion annually under the extended contract, an increase of between 52% and 59% over the previous one. Later, SASSA denied making such an estimate and said that it was only an adjustment for inflation, which was false.
The current CPS contract cannot be legally renewed because it has been deemed invalid by the Constitutional Court, senior attorney Wim Trengove informed Dlamini in October 2016.
She was also informed that the funding crisis was not a reason to continue using CPS because the emergency was self-created. Dlamini was informed that DSD was required to participate in competitive bidding and, as a result, could not contract with CPS.
The Constitutional Court was also instructed to be informed of SASSA's situation in December 2016 and that it "faces the highly rare potential of signing an extra year's contract with [CPS]".
The agency didn't make its appeal public until February 28, 2017, and then it quickly retracted it the next day using a letter that was dated the day before.
In February 2017, SASSA testified before the Congress' social development portfolio committee that it had encountered difficulties in its search for practical approaches to disbursing social benefits and asserted that, as of April, the only way to do so was to stick with a contracted service provider. deemed ineffective.
Early in March 2017, SASSA's Zodwa Mvulane testified before Congress that the Agency had insufficient time to remove CPS due to legal issues outside its control since it "had just one years, from September 2015, in readiness to become a payments manager." However, SASSA did "little or nothing" up to December before beginning to plan for a post-CPS settlement; the advisory committee had previously gone unheeded for many years.
A letter from Dlamini, sent on February 2, stated that CPS would no longer be required by the end of 2019. A letter from SASSA executive Thokozani Magwaza, sent a week later, stated that CPS would no longer be needed by the end of 2019. Despite having informed Congress that it lacked sufficient time, SASSA also stated before the Constitutional Court that it would no longer require CPS one year after the 2017–2018 fiscal year.
The Black Sash Trust has petitioned the Constitutional Court, via the Center for Applied Legal Studies, to order Dlamini and SASSA to take the required steps to safeguard the pension system. At the time the CPS contract expires on March 31, society and its beneficiaries are safeguarded.
The agreement with the Cash Paymaster Service was extended on March 6, 2017, and the court order was revoked. That contract's constitution was once again put on hold for a further 12 months. The Court recognized that CPS could not be expected to give benefits at a loss and ruled that neither side had "any claim to profit from the danger of infringing upon people's rights." As a result, it requested that CPS continue to offer social benefits at the rates it agreed to in 2012.
According to the Constitutional Court, the "responsible functions of SASSA" have known since April 2016 that they could not uphold an earlier promise to the Court that they would be able to provide social benefits beginning on April 1, 2017.
The Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Mogoeng Mogoeng, said that there was no explanation for Dlamini and SASSA's ineptitude, and the court determined that they were principally to blame for the crisis. Constitutional expert Pierre de Vos claims that the Constitutional Court came to the conclusion that SASSA and Dlamini cannot be trusted to carry out their constitutionally required duties to secure the distribution of social benefits and cannot be trusted to not lie before the court in the future.
DSD spent Rs 30 million on SASSA-related legal appeal fees between 2013 and 2017.
Unlawful deduction
The Social Assistance Act was changed by DSD in 2004 to prohibit anybody other than the recipient from taking money out of their account.

Terry White, USMC, photo c1967. Vietnam veteran.
My earliest memory of my cousin Terry was when he came home right after boot camp and just before being deployed to Vietnam.  I was too young for Vietnam to be on my radar--it was never discussed in school, never brought up in conversations.  I didn’t realize until years later that Terry came home from his deployment full of shrapnel and with part of his skull missing after being caught in a booby trap, and that they had warned my aunt that he wasn’t going to survive.  He did. I didn’t realize that his goofy, overgrown kid-ness was partly the result of brain damage as a result of that injury, and that the disability was severe enough that he was not considered employable.  He didn’t talk to me about Vietnam, but he did talk to my brother about it a little--maybe because my brother was also a Marine.  During deer season, Terry never sat in a stand or blind, but kept moving, and I think now that, out in the woods, to some degree he was back on patrol. If he was drinking and someone started a fight, he would end it. But he treated me like he was my older brother; took my kids fishing and played games with them with infinite patience, and was always engaging, funny, and--to me, my kids, and in any sort of company--spoke with Beaver Cleaver wholesomeness.  I haven’t had the chance to see Terry in several years, but I think of him and the fact that he sacrificed his whole adulthood for his country, and I can never repay that.

The Importance of Transportation Services
Tumblr media
Transportation services are used to move goods, people, and emergency equipment from one place to another. They can be divided into two basic categories: public transport and private transport. Public transport involves scheduled services along fixed routes, whereas private transport involves ad hoc services at the request of the rider. Transportation may occur as part of daily commuting, for business purposes, or for pleasure. You can get more info on these Transportation services on this website.
Whether a company uses a private fleet or contracts a transportation service provider, the right transportation system is vital to improving key performance indicators. The best transportation services will include tracking and reporting capabilities that allow businesses to keep tabs on drivers, inventory levels, and more. This will help businesses focus on their sales and production.
While the national transportation data are relatively uniform, the local data that is reported may differ. The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center provides a list of questions to ask providers. The answers will help the customer make an informed decision on which provider to hire. Those who use private transportation services should also be aware of the rules and regulations that govern them.
There are several types of transportation services, such as own account transportation, which uses transport means owned by the transport user. These users can include motorists using private cars to large industrial companies with fleets. While this type of transportation allows for the simplest and most cost-effective option, there are also risks involved. Private car owners may not be able to fully utilize their vehicles and may not realize full potential.
The transportation of goods is vital for businesses to succeed. By providing reliable and quality services, they can attract loyal customers and increase their revenue. Transportation services ensure efficient movement of products and goods, and serve as a bridge between suppliers and consumers. It also makes a company more competitive and efficient. It's essential to consider the types of goods and services that your company is looking to ship. You can get the best  transportation services here: https://www.puntacanatransfer.com.do/transportation/.
Many industries have different needs. Some require very large volumes, and others are very small. For example, bulk transport is often the most convenient option for sending a few hundred kilograms of cargo. Other modes of transportation, such as trucking and a pipeline, can handle huge quantities of freight. Using these options can provide cost-effective and fast shipping options.
In addition to public transportation, Schuyler County's Transportation Link Line coordinates various transportation options for the local community. It also offers free travel training and information to residents. Other transportation services in the area include van service provided by the Schuyler County Office for the Aging and Veterans Services. For elderly residents, a volunteer driver from the Veterans Services and RSVP can provide transportation for free. These drivers must call in advance to schedule transportation.
A city's transportation supply largely depends on the capacity of its infrastructure. Roads, bridges, and highways can only handle a limited number of vehicles, but trucks and trains can compete for the same road infrastructure. This means that the demand of transport services is often inversely proportional to the supply of them. In addition, the capacity of roads, airports, and railways affect transportation supply. You can get more enlightened on this topic by reading here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_transport.
