Oh Cass! 💔

The Cop Idol Storyline/Cass' murder was one of those rare PM storylines that was properly paced and shocking - not least given the time of the year (Christmas) and the light hearted fun of the Cop Idol/Christmas party in contrast with Cass' kidnap attack, the girls getting annoyed at Cass for not turning up and what was actually happening to her at time. Poor Cass being tied up, literally waiting and even begging to know why she was going to die. Poor poor girl 😭😭 (Could have done without even more of the Carl/Craig/Luke/Kerry rubbish during it though!)

In Life Is Sweet Mike Leigh switches his focus from the angry working class and soulless yuppies of High Hopes (1988) to the muddling-through lower middle class, coping with a world they never made but doggedly trying to make the best of it. Andy (Jim Broadbent) hates his work as a chef in an institutional kitchen, but he keeps on at it. Wendy (Alison Steadman), his wife, holds a couple of part-time jobs, one as a children's dancercise teacher, the other as a salesclerk in a children's clothing store. Her cheerful laugh hides disappointment and pain, some of it generated by their twin daughters. Natalie (Claire Skinner) has short hair and works as a plumber, and we sense that there has been some concern from the parents about her lifestyle, though everyone maintains a façade of contentment. Nicola (Jane Horrocks) has unkempt long hair and does nothing but lie about the house, snarling and smoking and mouthing left-wing slogans, and having slightly kinky sex with her boyfriend (David Thewlis). Nicola is also bulimic, a disorder she hides from her parents, though her twin hears the vomiting through the thin row-house wall that separates their bedrooms, and Nicola has been hospitalized before. But the film is decidedly comic, partly because Andy and Wendy have friends who aren't always as helpful as they could be. Patsy (Stephen Rea) persuades Andy to buy a rundown trailer that has been converted into a hamburger stand, with the idea that Andy can make enough money on weekends to eventually quit his job. Aubrey (Timothy Spall) is trying to open a French restaurant with an Edith Piaf theme, the Regret Rien, and when his waitress decamps just before the opening he persuades Wendy to take her place. Disasters ensue, leaving the characters teetering on the line between hilarity and tragedy, as life in Leigh's film so often does. The "sweetness" in the film lies in the fact that Andy and Wendy are genuinely nice people who suffer fools gladly, even if the fools are their own daughters and friends (or each other). Leigh is never content to stick to formula, however, no matter how much the conventional logic of film comedy seems to demand it, so every moment of Life Is Sweet is likely to hold a surprise: The characters do and say things we wouldn't necessarily expect of them. The performances are uniformly brilliant, as we might expect of this particular roster of British actors, and Rachel Portman's lovely, almost subliminal score backs them up well.

Probably the only thing I miss from the PM era (and before, they were amazing at this, probably actually better than the PM times during the section house years!) is the bonding and friendships shown between the officers in full flow outside of the station. It made their relationships inside the station much more believable.

Much more believable than the times like the Gun Runner episodes were Smithy said there was *noone* to tell about him going undercover - noone from the army years (ignoring Tony for obvious reasons)? SO/CO19? Stations before Sun Hill (Yeah... ignoring Vickers for the same obvious reasons)? Hendon? His football team? Essex? School? Locals? Bob? Past officers? Nick who could have left Witness Protection or at least made contact with Smithy given Weaver was dead by then. Not to mention his mum and family members (they never did mention his brother again after PC times...) Yes there were station friends that would know through the station, especially Gina, but I don't buy Smithy having no other friends whatsoever given he didn't know how long he'd have to be undercover for and therefore away for - or the risk of drama/potential death.

(Bonus props for this episode making a big thing of the serial killer and getting the girls home safe in a taxi after the night out... only for the taxi to be driven by the very person they're after 😂😂😂)

Think I might have found the real reason Cass gets murdered though - also in this episode....
