So BG3 is currently holding a chokehold on me and I can't help but think of hetasean dnd au. I'll try to limit this to PHB and 5e for simplicity reasons. also sorry I'm not a seasoned DND player at all i played one casual campaign but only actually understood the mechanics after playing bg3 LOL im a highly kinetic-visual person
Vietnam: Any tanky build will do as such I was thinking an atheist paladin would be funny lol. She is definitely the one with the most hands-on experience in battle. Proficient with polearms and shields. I see her more leaning towards martial classes, so like barbarian or fighter. probably fighter. Looks Lawful but actually Chaotic. Hmm... maybe Neutral Good?
Thailand: Monk for the muay thai coolness. Not sure about his subclass tho... most of them don't sound lethal and brutal enough. Definitely Lawful Evil.
Malaysia: At first I was thinking of a gunslinger build (just so I can give him a loooooong boy ala Malacca era) but the fighter subclass, because he doesn't come off as the artificer type to me. Either that or barbarian for the tiger rage. Now him being a druid would allow him to actually turn into a tiger, but honestly Mal as a character doesn't seem so druid-y to me--Oh wait. he skips meetings to catch sea creatures and talks about social harmony... maybe he could be a druid. Chaotic Good.
Singapore: Any class that relies on high INT, like wizard . Ok I said I'd limit to PHB but war magic is so him. The other schools just doesn't scream poisoned shrimp enough for me. Lawful Neutral.
Indonesia: At first I was thinking of cleric to match his worldflags counterpart but Indo as a warlock is a delicious thought. Besides, Pact of Talisman mechanic sounds like typical indo black magic shenanigans. Of course the talisman must be a haunted ornate keris. Then later another idea came: what if he's a multiclass bard-monk?? The mechanics match up with pesilat Betawi as it's tradition to roast your opp with pantun (type of Malay poem) before commencing the beating. So like, Vicious Mockery -> Flurry of Blows . but if Thai is already a monk, Indo will have to relinquish that role for diversity reasons. I'm on the fence between True Neutral and Chaotic Neutral.
Philippines: Him being a bard is a no-brainer because filipinos and singing!!11!!! also after playing a bard, there seem to be more of roasting a dude than singing But hear me out: deadly dex-based fighter. Or since he already has Pien, why not a beast master ranger? If we really need to play that Catholic Trauma™ then Piri could be a cleric. never paladin tho. Two-weapon proficiency, twin blades because he's a gemini. Same alignment as Indo awww twinning!!! but leaning more on chaotic
this is still a brainstorming post maaaaybe I'll draw their designs some day...... what do y'all think???? I'd like to hear some suggestions 🙌

What are your OCs' favorite weapons or fighting styles? What weapons would they want to learn how to use, either for efficiency or just because they think it's cool?
Marco: prefers to sit behind the scenes and control his robots, he should probably learn at least some self-defense honestly lol
Salacia: prefers a shield and her control over water, can also use a polearm, xiphos, and bow and arrow, she'd love to learn some Atlantean fighting styles for Tuatlall <3333
Tuatlall: prefers magic, isn't much of a fan of physical combat
L'Harann: has superpowers (eye lasers best!!!) but is also good with her fists without them, she'd probably do well learning kickboxing
Experiment 929: likes to use her newfound superstrength to throw things like cars
Lea: prefers manipulating sound waves into knife-like projectiles and fighting with a bo-staff, practices (and teaches) jujutsu and taekwondo, she'd love to learn capoeira and kungfu
Megitsune: prefers fighting with dual-swords and jujutsu
Eoland: doesn't usually need to fight beyond using her superspeed, one punch at mach-2 is plenty for most people lol
Barbara: same as Eoland, she'll also do a few rounds of normal-speed boxing with Eden and Ira
Hartley: prefers to use her flute to hypnotize people to do what she needs them to or uses her robotic rats, she can throw a solid punch if she needs to but she could use some self-defense lessons also
Yǔqí: tries not to fight at all but will try to distract whatever hero is trying to stop her while her snakes finish what they need to do and make their escape
Eden: the police on Earth-63 don't really use weapons but she's a very good boxer, she'd love to learn karate as well
Ira: is also a very good boxer and he practices tai chi
Cisca: very much does not consider herself a fighter both before and after gaining her powers, though she's not opposed to using her powers to defend herself and her friends
Savitar: see Barbara
Mallorie: SPEED! FORCE! SWORDS!!!
Kal: he's literally Superman lol
Ricki: prefers her escrima sticks but is also proficient with a bo-staff, batarangs/birdarangs, shuriken, and practices kungfu, judo, taekwondo, and aikido, she'd love to have a better mastery of sword fighting
Jessie: prefers knives, particularly favors her kris, kunai, and cinquedea (and of course, the All Blades), she's also proficient with batarangs/birdarangs, shuriken, and practices muay thai, judo, and taekkyeon - although outlawed on all of Earth-63, she's also very good with projectile weapons including guns (where she got the guns, she'll never tell), she'd like to get better at archery
Tiff: prefers her bo-staff but is also proficient with batarangs/birdarangs, shuriken, and practices kendo (she was on her high school team), judo, and aikido, she'd like to get better with knives (she will die before she asks Jessie for help tho lol)
Dami: prefers their katana, is also proficient with knives, a bo-staff, batarangs/birdarangs, shuriken, and is absolutely not opposed to biting people, she also practices kungfu and muay thai and would like to learn more martial art disciplines
Gabi: prefers to turn into a tiger but her other go-to animals are gorilla, snake, bat, cat, dog, or octopus, she'd like to see if she can turn into extinct or alien animals
Laska: prefers her bow and arrow, would like to learn how to fight at close range
Piper: prefers to use her sound control for speed and defense, she'd love to learn how to use it on the offensive
Lara: practices hapkido, would like to learn other martial arts
Jisoo: prefers to use the ice side of her powers, she feels like the fire side is too dangerous but she'd definitely like to learn how to better control it
Alex: practiced qin na and fenced in high school and college
Dan: practices shuai jiao, would love to learn how to use some ancient greek weaponry
Amara: prefers her bow and arrow and fire powers, practices taekwondo, would like to get better with a sword or spear
Mendel: doesn't have any formal training but his punches are still fairly powerful and he'll also bite, he's trying desperately to get some sort of training lol

Close fitting top with elbow length sleeves that is fairly tight fitting but allow room for movement. It is a kind-of-faded saffron color similar to the breast color of the Fenghuang. Over which she wears her leather and metal armor. Then over that, layers of very thin (almost diaphanous cloth) that are very loose fitting so it is easy to slip out of or just shuck off when needed. That builds up in colors until the outer layer where the skirt section splits off into separated 'tails' of colors. That way, in terms of movement and flow, the clothing picks up the slightest breeze and floats. Creating the illusion of effortless gliding and flight while allowing the character's movement with her clothes to punctuate her body language as she herself moves. The idea being that just the act of movement portrays elegance and effortless poise. When Zhou Chen moves with purpose all the outer layers will immediately flow behind her also heightening the impression of a hunting bird striking at its target

Tifa’s Fighting Style
One of the things that impressed me most about FF7R is Tifa Lockhart’s combat. Her mechanics were dazzling. Her combos left me awed. Her style was so realistic, but... what was it? Naturally, I did some digging, and happened to stumble across a blog where most of the work had already been done. So this post is courtesy of Flowerslightning, with thoughts and elaboration on my part. THANKS AND CREDIT TO THIS WONDERFULLY INSIGHTFUL BLOGGER (do check out her tumblr for more fantastic content).
First, let’s note that Tifa’s combat design is very much in the field of fighting games. To some degree at least, developers take inspiration from real-life arts. The style of Tekken’s Lei Wulong, for instance, is based on the Drunken First. Street Fighter’s Chun Li uses the model of Chinese Kenpo.
The FFVII devs - to my knowledge - have revealed nothing on Tifa’s inspired martial arts background. She adopted the monk style (the fisticuffs of FF-verse) from a traveler named Zangan. That’s all we know. She trained (obviously very hard) as his pupil for the 2 years between Cloud leaving Nibelheim and Sephiroth burning the town. Zangan then brought her to Midgar and continued his travels. The only path for discerning real-arts inspiration is through observing Tifa’s fights - though even such attempt is limited. Her style is not as straightforward as Lei’s or Chun Li’s. She seems to employ a mix of martial arts, specializing in the offense and using speed and dexterity to her advantage.
Here are the main styles that Flowerslightning deduced, supported by some of Tifa’s abilities.
1. Muay Thai [demonstrated by Somersault].
This is the known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” and is commonly referred to as “Thai boxing”. It differs from traditional kickboxing (which has its roots in Japan) most notably in being an 8-point instead of 4-point striking system. In other words, Muay Thai employs elbow and shin strikes in addition to kicks and punches. Tifa’s kicks, I would say, are actually more akin to kickboxing, for Muay Thai places emphasis on heavy kicks involving the shin bone. Yet her acrobatic style is very akin to the latter.
In addition to the key boxing techniques of both the Thai and Japanese art, Tifa’s elbow maneuvers provide further evidence for the former. This is most evident during her fight with Loz, where she uses her elbows for offense and defense. One could say she expanded her Thai-based skills during in the 2 years that followed saving the world.
Running a new bar and raising two under-10-year-olds would have left at least a... smidgen of free time, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Muay Thai [demonstrated by Refocus].
Some may suggest this move of Tifa’s is a Taekwondo technique (we’ll get to that lovable sport soon, don’t you worry), but I agree with Flowerslightning in that her jumping style is more Muay Thai. Almost all Muay Thai techniques use movement of the entire body, rotating the hip with each kick, punch, elbow and block. This to me is the obvious discerning factor. Tifa exquisitely throws her whole body into the majority of her combos and limit breaks, ground and aerial alike. Specifically through that neat hip rotation. Refocus is but one example of many.
PS. Don’t you just love her boots? The gloves are really something but, those red boots... Just look at them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Taekwondo [shown in Overpower].
Literally the “Way of the Hand and Foot”, this is a Korean martial art set apart by its emphasis on kicks. Head-height kicks, jump spin kicks, swift kicks, the list goes on. (But of course, there’s plenty of hand blocking and take-downs too.) Did you know that Taekwondo is part of South Korea’s military training program as well as their national sport? Its skillset is heavy in self-defense.
Tifa is mostly an offensive attacker (and wow, do her strikes deal devastating damage). Yet her aerial maneuvers and acrobatic footwork certainly have elements of Taekwondo. What makes the Taekwondo kick-style unique is its elaborate, advanced forms. Xtreme 720s, for instance, are underpinned by precise technical soundness and accuracy.
Yes, these are literal 720° mid-air turns with a SERIES of kicks timed in utmost precision. They require extraordinary strength. Something Tifa deceptively pulls off with ease, no?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Hēi-Hǔ-Quán [displayed in Starshower].
Flowerslightning deduces this ATB ability to be a Boxing combo. Though to me it looks more like Hēi-Hǔ-Quán (lit. ‘Black Tiger Fist’, a Shaolin striking art from China). Watch her hands closely: the thumbs are curled like the fingers rather than wrapped around them to form a fist. Tifa’s wide stances and acrostic kicks are a little less tiger-esque than Hēi-Hǔ-Quán, but there is definitely resemblance of the style there too.
All in all, she seems to employ a mixture of Shaolin arts and Boxing. Her finger-positions for fast jabs (as in Starshower and the Loz fight) are predominantly of the Tiger Fist. Her more powerful strikes, meanwhile, include Boxing crosses, hooks and uppercuts. The sewer cutscene demonstrates this clearly, when Tifa & Cloud encounter the Sahagin.
And damn, do we love the back-to-back Cloti in that scene. Surely I’m not just speaking for myself here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Boxing [displayed in Unbridled Strength].
Tifa’s aforementioned fist moves and powerful finishing punches are no doubt reminiscent of boxing. Also, she always enters a fight with her fists closed in a boxing stance (whether she will employ Shaolin or other hand techniques is irrelevant). Take her cutscene against the Whispers where she, Cloud and Aerith arrive at Sector 7. She begins with a cross and follows with a rotated hook - one of the most basic boxing combos.
BONUS FACT: Rather than orthodox, Tifa always employs a southpaw stance (right hand and right foot forward). This is the preferred stance of a left-hand fighter. Is Tifa left-handed? Considering her fighting alone, yes is the plausible assumption. Here are a few examples:
     - Unbridled Strength has her delivering a finishing blow with her left hand. We would expect such a move to be done with the power hand.
     - Her single strike that hurls Loz across the church is also with the left hand. This punch is not part of a combo; she could have used either hand.
     - In guard position, her left is the rear hand, to both attack and protect herself.
     - And of course, in southpaw stance, she always begins with a left-hand strike.
However, all of Tifa’s general actions (to my observance) - like bartending, catching Aerith in the sewer, carrying the Buster Sword into Corneo’s quarters, etc. - suggest that she is right-handed. So why use the left, the weaker, as her dominant hand in fighting? Could she actually be ambidextrous? That is a possibility. But weighing up the evidence in addition to Tifa's ingenuity, this could well be out of fighting strategy.
Southpaw can give Tifa a strategic advantage, you see, because of the tactical and cognitive difficulties her enemies would have of coping with a fighter who moves in a mirror-reverse of the norm. In other words, she takes advantage of the fact that most fighters lack experience against lefties. Doing this:
     - opens up chance for a variety of surprise combos;
     - puts her human enemies in danger of KOs by what would otherwise be ordinary strikes; and
     - enables her to trick her opponents should she unexpectedly convert to orthodox during fights.
Pretty damn awesome, huh?
Tumblr media
6. Gymnastics [dodging maneuvers].
Gymnastics, like fighting arts, enhances balance, strength, flexibility and agility - the four areas Tifa excels at. Now, we’ve talked a lot about her strong points. But what of her weaknesses? Players will have noticed immediately that Tifa has a major setback. She can accurately be described as a glass cannon, due to her low HP and defenses that counter-balance her speed and dexterity. That is precisely what makes playing as her so compelling; you get that sense of life or death intensity. The fight feels REAL. She is the least OP character in the party, in addition to by far being the most difficult to master. Utilized properly, she can be the strongest of them all. And wow, is that rewarding or what?
Because of her weak defenses, Tifa must constantly remain on the move, and gymnastics is the quintessential means in doing so. Hand springs, aerial cartwheels - you name it, she’s got it. As if those kicks and uppercuts don’t scream epic enough already. Doesn’t it just make her even MORE amazing?
Tumblr media
So I’ve added Hēi-Hǔ-Quán to Flowerslightning’s conclusion: that Tifa’s combat is Mixed Martial Arts, with her dominant skills as Kickboxing, Taekwondo and Muay Thai. And of course, the interweaving of Gymnastics, which adds an elegance to her epic kickassery.
Tifa lost her teacher after just two years, and spent the last five managing & running a bar, serving as AVALANCHE’s funder & treasurer, and effectively solo-raising Barret’s little daughter. Add two more years, and we have a completely absent Barret, a very sick child in addition to the one she is (now permanently) raising, and a depressed, distant Cloud who has left her to struggle as a solo barkeep, full-time nurse and single mother. How on earth did she find the time and will to master her fighting techniques?
Yes, we are talking about fiction, but this woman is nothing short of incredible. Not simply as a fighter - that isn’t even the start of it. Tifa is, to me, the character who has had it the hardest. Yet she perseveres. And not only that, but she gives. She gives and gives, and doesn’t give up, even when everyone else around her has. In addition, she is the only ‘ordinary’ member of the party: Cloud, on top of military training, had his senses enhanced with Mako & Jenova cells; Barret literally has a gun for an arm; and Aerith as the last Cetra possesses exceedingly strong magic. Tifa, like with everything she does, worked hard to hone her skills. And that, to me, is incontestably admirable.
As Flowerslightning put it, she was “ready to go through hell and yet still remain soft”. And those virtues she held to, where most people would have quit. Compassion and perseverance to the end, the two traits that uphold her - to me - as the most inspiring hero of fiction.

Hi. Look at my cookie run kingdom au.
So the cookie kingdom instead of being one whole kingdom is instead branched into different kingdoms from LINE episodes that together are the cookie kingdom in whole.
Past the witch’s house is the common kingdom. This kingdom is ruled by princess and her father king choco drop and is usually where common cookies and new cookies find a home until they find their way
Primeval jungle is the jungle kingdom, and is ruled by princess tiger lily. This kingdom is mainly home to explorers and more common cookies
Dragon’s valley is the fire kingdom, it’s ruled by king fire spirit and is home to extreme and daring cookies who can take the heat like dino-sour and muay thai/red pepper. This kingdom really makes up most of the army for the whole cookie kingdom.
City of Wizards is the Magic Kingdom. It’s ruled by queen moonlight and queen sea fairy, along with their children peppermint, cream puff, and wizard. The kingdom is home to cookies with extraordinary powers and/or talents like mint choco.
Tower of frozen waves is the sea kingdom and is connected with the magic kingdom, having the same rulers. Cookies who love aquatic life or the cold like snow sugar and peppermint reside here and help the ocean creatures.
Dessert paradise is the paradise kingdom. It is ruled by queen sugar swan and her sons princes whipped cream and wind archer. The kingdom is home to nature loving cookies like herb and cherry blossom who help keep the kingdom with life. Despite his royal status, wind archer prefers to keep it secret and is always disguised in his archer gear to save the kingdom from fallen souls. Whipped cream on the other hand loves showing off his status
Those are the main kingdoms that really are the cookie kingdom in whole. However.. some have discussed rumors of an abandoned kingdom of darkness which had once been a member of the kingdoms.. what happened is a mystery to all, or is it?

Monk Week: Martial Arts Styles
Tumblr media
There are many real-life examples of martial arts that you can pull from to describe your attacks and moves when roleplaying a monk. It’s definitely more flavorful to specialize in one technique so that other players can imagine how your character moves. A Muay Thai monk is going to move a lot differently than an Aikido monk. Think of how distinctly the four different nations in Avatar: the Last Airbender fight. There’s even a short behind-the-scenes video about them. Figure out what sort of style you want to use and that can help you flesh out your monk. Look up some tutorials on moves and styles unique to your martial art and use for your character! All it takes is watching a few online tutorials or demonstrations; it's not like we are giving up roleplaying to learn secret martial arts for forty years. Here is an exhaustive list of well-known martial arts that exist from around the world:
http://www.blackbeltwiki.com/martial-arts-styles
Here are some of my favorites (click the names for videos):
Aikido: Japanese. Focuses on evasion, joint locks, and redirecting attacks away from you. Looks sort of like dancing.
Bajiquan: Chinese. bursts of energy and powerful elbow strikes. Movement is slow and melodic but punctuated by powerful, lightning-fast strikes.
Canne de Combat: French. sporting cane fighting. I mostly just want to see a gentleman monk.
Capoeira: Brazilian. Dance fighting.
Hung Ga: Chinese. Many styles based on animals. (Crane, Dragon, Leopard, Snake, Tiger)
Iaijutsu: Japanese. Art of drawing a sword; many forms.
Kung Fu (Monkey): Ape-like movements to attack from surprising angles or to fool opponents into thinking you are off-balance. This is where the Drunken Master style comes from. Also if you haven't seen that Jackie Chan movie shame on you.
Kung Fu (Praying Mantis): Redirecting attacks, joint locks, pressure point strikes, and traps.
Muay Thai: Thailand. Kickboxing with powerful knee and elbow attacks. Also here’s some bonus Ong Bak
Sikaran: Philippines. Almost exclusively a kicking martial art, with arms and hands used only for blocking.
Taekkyeon: Korean. leg sweeps, high kicks, spiraling arm movements to confuse enemies, soft movements with powerful force.
Example: Drunken Fist
Tumblr media
image source: Jackie Chan in Drunken Master
To give you an example of what sorts of notes you might take, I will do my own with a style that Wizards has already made a subclass for: the Drunken Fist. A lot of people will either be confused or upset I didn't go into detail about the drunken style this week so I might as well sate your hunger for it here. And here is a link to Wizards' stats for the drunk monk for those that were unaware of it. Note that I know close to nothing about martial arts. I am just a guy with access to Google.
Drunken Fist Techniques:
Daoist Style of the 8 Immortals (as seen in the Drunken Master Jackie Chan film). Names can be used for names of moves, words of wisdom, or roleplaying.
Lu Dongbin: leader of the immortals, magic sword on his back. Style involves swaying back and forth to trick the enemy. Fast punches that return to a pose as if holding or drinking from a cup. Move where he kicks behind him.
Li Tieguai: cripple with one leg and a cane. Style is mostly standing on one leg and tumbling. The standing leg is kept rigid and ahead of you while moving. Leg sweeps, drop kicks, and a weird jump-and-tumble while grabbing the rigid leg.
Han Khongli: carries a cauldron of wine. Style mimics this by always returning to a stance with arms outstretched before you as if holding the "cauldron." Though Jackie mostly just does a bunch of punching, Wikipedia says it involves powerful tackles, so use this when describing a grapple attack.
Lan Caihe: immortal with a bamboo basket. Has a “sudden waist attack.” Seems to be holding this imaginary basket higher than the cauldron god and with one hand in front of the other.
Zhang Guolao: the elderly donkey rider. Most of this style involves kicking but has some notable moves. An airborne spinning double kick that ends by falling to the ground face-up, then kipping up into a front flip. Another is with the body rigid on the ground, held up by one arm and hopping while the other arm punches. Another that seems usable for any style is bending over backwards and punching the enemy at chest-height.
Cao Guojiu: the young and clever immortal. Most notable moves were flips, including one flip with his hands behind his back. The Wikipedia says this style includes locks and breaking joints, as well as attacking vulnerable parts of the body. This seems like a drunken Praying Mantis style (based on description alone).
Han Ziangzi: the flute-player. Hands return to a position mimicking holding a flute. This form is often used in the film when blocking or deflecting attacks, mostly with the wrists. One notable move was a raging forward attack with flailing arms.
He Ziangu: Miss He, who "flirts with the enemy to cover her short-range attacks" according to Wikipedia. This is likely the key part of drunken fist, which is luring opponents into a false sense of superiority. Use this when getting up close and personal and for comedic moments. Twist the waist whenever you dodge an attack.
Jumping to the side and backward onto one knee, twisting the waist towards the jump, likely to engage someone who was to your side or while stumbling about the battlefield to suddenly engage a foe.
Named moves found on YouTube:
Lotus Nymph Scattering Flowers: one hand up and other down while waggling fingers.
Han Khonli Waving a Fan: slapping back and forth with one hand.
Attracting the Phoenix with the Flute: In the flute position but spinning backward in a circle to presumably dodge.
Goliath Offering Wine: Cauldron position spinning around for a punch.
General Guan Stroking his Beard: the move itself wasn't notable, more like a position. I would pretend this move is a barrage of attacks or deflections mimicking stroking a beard. The name sounded cool so it's gotta be used.
Other observations:
Snakelike waist movements
Circular arcs with outstretched arms while flailing.
Stumbling has a certain rhythm to it as the center of balance moves back and forth.
Lots of interaction with the ground via drop-kicks or fake-outs or leg-sweeping.
Always miming taking a deep swig to seem off-balance. In-game this can be done by actually carrying a drink in-hand.
Anyway those are the sorts of things I would keep in mind after researching a fighting style. It’s more of a martial ART anyway, so describing your monk’s attacks is more about capturing the feel of it than knowing exactly how to execute every last move.
Tune in tomorrow for some new homebrew subclasses for the monk! (no Drunken Fist but trust me there are some rad ones!)

Most of us know Muay Thai as the most popular martial art produced in Thailand but little did we know that there are several martial arts that are from this beautiful country. On this episode, Jeremy talks about Muay Boran and other martial arts of Thailand. Muay Boran, which literally means “ancient boxing”, is the ancestor to the more famous martial art, Muay Thai. Now you’ve likely heard of Muay Thai Translate roughly the art of eight limbs or eight limb boxing, I’ve read a number of different translations and I don’t speak Thai and I can’t tell you definitively what it means, I have to go on what I’m reading but, Muay Thai is not the only Thai martial art. It may be the most popular today, it may have influenced MMA, actually quite a bit of self defense even in the traditional martial arts here, but it is not only the traditional martial art from Thailand. The most popular martial art from Thailand that is not Muay Thai actually precedes Muay Thai It’s called Muay Boran. Muay Boran or ancient boxing is a martial art that is originally from Thailand in the late 18th century and the ancestor of as I’ve said, the more commonly known martial art called Muay Thai The history of Muay Boran starts with a warrior nai khanom tom in 1767, the kingdom of Ayutthaya, now Thailand, lost after a long series of wars against the Burmese. This war, ended the four century old Siamese kingdom, and may people are held captives and taken to Burma. Among these prisoners was the skilled Thai boxer named nay khanom tom. About 7 years later the Burmese king organized a festival that involved a competition between the Thai boxers and the Burmese boxers. The king wanted to see whose technique was superior because the Burmese had their own different style of boxing. Burmese boxing mainly involve fist for fighting while the that boxing as you might expect, use knees elbows feet and fist. The Thai chose khanom tom to fight against the champion of the Burmese. As part of the custom, khanom tom performed his way kru dance accompanied by music before the fight. KHanom tom defeated and even knocked out the Burmese champion and the Burmese cannot easily accept this defeat, they even went so far as to say that the way kru dance was black magic. After all this, the Burmese king sent another 9 skilled boxers to fight khanom tom, one after the other and none of these Burmese fighters succeeded in defeating them even though khanom tom must’ve been exhausted fighting off ten boxers in arrow. The Burmese king finally accepted defeat and even applauded khanom tom because of his extraordinary boxing skills. Then the king said, according to legend anyway, that “every part of the Siamese is blessed with venom, even with his barehand he can fell 9 or 10 opponents, but his lord was incompetent and lost the country to the enemy.” if you had been any good there’s no way the city of Ayutthaya would ever have fallen.” the victory led to the release of khanom Thom along with his comrades. The Burmese king even khanom Thom his choice of two rewards. Know Thom chose 2 Burmese wives over riches offering the reason that money was easier to find. Even today, his victory is annually celebrated on Thailand on march 17th and they call it the national Muay thay day.
Khanom tom did not use Muay Boran exactly but rather another form of martial art similar to it. There were several ancient boxing styles from different regions of Thailand at that time but they were just lumped together in a  single term, Muay Boran. And we kind of see this today when we talk about karate or we talk about taekwondo. There are variations and you know, can we really get down to what the true and I’m using air quotes as I say this, karate is, the true taekwondo etc. The modern day Muay Boran is different from the original one. Originally, it was used for self defense sn it was part of the training of military soldiers. It involved lethal and ground fighting techniques that included grappling, the Thai embraced the martial art and became part of the Thai culture where fighter from the different regions of the country would gather to test their skills. Eventually, fighters began to wrap their hands and forearms with rope not only to serve as protection but also to wound their opponents. And I suspect those of you that are old van Damme fans, might have some visuals as I’m saying this. The reputation of Muay Boran fighters heightened because of their efficiency in close combat and the best became royal guards to the king. Around 1920s and 1930s, Muay Boran was disciplined and modernized by king rama the 7th so that participants would fight in a ring with a set of rules. It adapted the western style of boxing in terms of referees and rounds and the use of gloves rather than rope to reduce the wounds that can be inflicted during the fight. Moreover, many techniques especially the deadly ones were also banned. And this was the reason why Muay boran’s popularity declined. Because of this reformation, the “ancient boxing” eventually called Muay Thai also referred to as the art of eight limbs. Muay Thai then gained popularity internationally and it produced thousands, tens of thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands of practitioners around the world. But Muay Thai, Muay Boran are not the only Thai martial arts. Here are a few others that I’ll be honest, before we started doing the research I’ve never even heard of.
Muay chaiya. Muay chaiya is an old martial arts founded around 200 years ago by a military leader of the ritana kusin kingdom. It got its name from a town in Thailand. Its techniques are effective against heavier opponents even without using too much strength. However, immediate counter attacks are required because the attacks may not be strong enough to cause heavy damage on the opponent. A Muay chaiya fighter’s defense is difficult to penetrate because much like Muay Thai, elbows and shins are used to block the attacks. Their hops and jumps make them even more difficult to hit as they move around.
Lerdit or Muay lerdrit is a martial art derived from Muay Boran and has a pretty close resemblance in terms of the techniques used. Lert, pardon my pronunciation if anybody bout there actually speaks Thai with a proper accent, means superior while rit means power. So we could translate it to boxing of superior power. Its techniques were also based from the strategies of the special infantry corps which are tum, ground, top meaning crush, chap meaning grab and hak meaning break the joints. Muay lerdit is effective on close combat as fighters are trained to have strong muscles and tendons to perform strikes grappling and finishing blows more effectively. And if you’re like me you might be visualizing someone shin kicking a palm tree right now. There seems to be this broad cultural similarity among these martial arts and I think we see that in every country. You know, when we look at the martial arts of japan, they all have a similar attitude.
Krabi krabong can be called the armed version of Muay Boran. Krabi means sword and krabong means staff. Other types of weapons are also used such as dob which is a single edged sword and ga wich is a bladed staff and maisuksong which is a pair of clubs. According to history, most of the techniques of krabi krabong are influenced by Japanese martial arts such as Okinawan kabuto.
Silat pattani. Silat pattani is a martial art formed, originated in the pattani kingdom which is now a state in Thailand. It has a heavy similarity with gatka wich is an Indian martial arts style. It has no predefined forms but rather has 2 freestyle forms called Ramayana and animal forms. The Ramayana form includes three figures which is for good posture, sitaduwi which is for short movements and fatal attacks, and hanuman which is for strength and agility. Each figure has different behaviors, movements and  mannerisms that should be imitated. The animal form consists of 6 animals which are the deer for agility, monkey for speed agility and impulsiveness, snake for hard and soft techniques that can include blades, bird from the meking eagle rooster and crane, tiger for strength and dragon for locking the opponent using limbs. Initially, Silat pattani doesn’t involve weapons, the practitioners must learn and eventually master the fundamentals before applying the weapons to the techniques. The weapons used include kayu or the bate which are sticks, pari which is a machete, broad sword sort of thing, chinday samping, tombok lembing which is a spear, keris which is a dagger, karambit which is a tiger claw knife and gadak which is a mace. You know I always find it interesting when we talk about martial arts of a particular country, how we can elements from other martial arts in them. As we’re talking about Silat pattani we’re hearing things around animals. If you’ve talked about animals as they relate to martial; arts you’re probably thinking of Chinese martial arts at least I am. And you know, this kind of lends itself to something I’ve said on the show that you know, martial arts are going to have a lot of similarities regardless where they come from because there’s only so many ways we can move our body. And cultural influence can be pretty strong especially when we go back when there weren’t dozens, hundreds, thousands of variations in martial arts when there wasn’t internet, tv and movies, people would share these things. And if you were a newer martial artist, its stands to reason that someone sharing something with you, you’re probably not going to spend years or decades with the opportunity to learn from that person so you’re going to take what they teach you in a short period of time and combine it with what you know, what you understand from your own country, you’re own culture. And thus we see some of this spreading. I think it’s cool.
And there you have it, Thai martial arts that are not Muay Thai We will probably talk about Muay Thai in-depth at some point, I’m enjoying this research episodes they’ve been a lot of fun, I’m learning a lot, hopefully you’re learning something and you enjoy that. If you don’t, well the beauty of the podcast format is you can just skip to the next episode. You can go on to one of the other many, many episodes but you know what, I would like your feedback.
