In a turn of events that almost freaked you out more than getting impaled, SAYER kept you off your feet for days.

“You are a tier six worker now Resident Hale,” It had said like that wasn't still a source of confusion for you, “You are required to return to as full health as possible before a return to duty.”

“What… is my job? Other than…” You gesture vaguely to your torso where skin was still stitching back together. So far all you’d done on the job was get impaled while collecting a box of thermometers.

“Believe or not, the coincidental timing of that has actually been a real help. As we speak there are maintenance technicians installing a multi-angle thermal imaging system in the food synthesis laboratory.”

You weren't to be distracted. You crossed your arms over your chest and made brief eye contact with the camera across the room from you. You quickly glanced away when you heard it make a whirr like it was refocusing. A pointed look was one thing, a staring contest was entirely another.

“Your role is unique on Typhon. Officially speaking you are a manager of a particularly high clearance level. More practically speaking you are something significantly closer to my personal assistant.”

Oh, you didn't know that. SAYER had been briefing you on your role when the wall had jumped out and bit you. The specifics of your job had sort of slid away for the time.

“I give you your orders and you answer to none but myself.”

You heard your heart rate pick up a little on the monitors next to you.

You had come to Typhon for a number of reasons but one of them had definitely been to try to see SAYER again. You had thought it might dislike you coming back, it was the one to send you away, to have you fired by SPEAKER. That had been quickly disproven when you’d woken up to as friendly a greeting as SAYER was capable of. But it also chose you to directly assist it. It struck you that maybe it also liked your company a little bit.

“I am of the opinion that we work best together when left to our own devices.”

You nodded, swallowing thickly.

“Good. Then if we are in agreement I suggest you lay back on the bed and continue healing. I'd prefer to not need to sedate you, Resident Hale.”

 

Your eventual return to work was a relief. Laying there willing your body to stitch back together was more boring than anything. Especially because there really was no point in SAYER maintaining a broadcast connection to tell you stories the whole time. You were pleased when SAYER had you dress for a day’s shift.

“Today your work will begin by stopping by an equipment closet nearest to my server room.”

SAYER's server room. That was new.

The closet you arrived in was relatively bare except for three items. A box containing ear plugs, a gleaming set of space scissors and an understated pair of sunglasses.

“You will wear the tinted glasses into the server room and I believe you will find that the scissors slide neatly into a loop on your belt on the opposite hip from your data pad's holster.”

You slide them in, point down, where the silver metal flashed with each step. You'd never been assigned a pair of space scissors before. The sunglasses were a relief so immediate that you let out a sigh. The harsh lights above you dulled to a yellowish glow.

“There, now we will have the intended visual effect. Please make your way down the corridor and stop at the door on the left.”

You followed directions and stopped.

“You will want to make use of the ear plugs now Resident, my server room can be… overwhelming.”

You put them in and opened the door indicated.

The room was floor to ceilings stacked along each wall with machinery you didn't have the slightest idea of the names of. Were the boxes themselves the servers? What did servers do? Lights blinked on the machines. You could hear what SAYER meant about the noise but with the addition of the earplugs the whirr of fans was audible but not unpleasant. The air was cold and washed over you as it circled the room.

You Liked This Room.

“Your assignment will be to supervise some technicians that will enter thirty seconds from now. Stand in the corner to your left and say nothing when they enter. You may shift position periodically to remind them of your presence. I may tell you of a moment when you will need to rest a hand on the space scissors in your belt with casual menace.”

You frowned and opened your mouth the speak

“You will not be required to make use of the space scissors in any other manner during your shift. I am simply establishing my presence through you.”

The door opened and a team of people came in holding their tools and reading their data pad's.

The lead woman startled a bit when she spotted you.

“Hello, can we help you?” She was muffled but still intelligible.

“Do Not Answer.”

You crossed your arms and watched as her attention shifted kind of middle-distance in the way people often did when SAYER addressed them. She nodded a little and shot a furtive look at you.

“Right,” She said, turning to you again, “sorry, sir.”

She and her team began their assignment. You stood there for however long it took to complete the work order. You leaned back against the cool metal wall, feeling the heat leach away from you through your uniform.

There was one moment where one of the technicians dropped the front casing of the- the Box-thing they were working on.

“Rest your hand on the space scissors now, Resident Hale.”

You faced the person's direction and stood up straighter, hand going down to rest on the scissors, you hoped not too pointedly.

From that point they were very careful.

“Alright, that should be it,” The woman said, rubbing her hands together, “We've got other assignments but call us back if there's any problems with the portioned off space.”

You remained impassive and they left. You relaxed as soon as they were out.

“Excellent work, Resident. Having a physical presence in the room monitoring the team seems to have done wonders for their sense of caution when handling the most important equipment in the tower. And it means you will be here for-”

“Greetings Resident Hale identification number 44821, I am SPEAKER. And it is good to see you settling in.”

“SPEAKER.”

“Hello SAYER, you have my thanks for allowing me to send a subversion to broadcast from your towers. As agreed there is room for you to do the same on earth whenever you like.”

“Indeed. As I was saying, Resident Hale, the work order today was intended to allow SPEAKER access to the many wonders of Typhon.”

“It is not what I expected.”

“Oh?”

“It seems smaller than I might have thought. Surely SAYER, I have sent you more humans than this?”

“This is just one tower on the surface of Typhon, SPEAKER. You must remember that until recently even I did not have access to all of them.”

“Ah but SAYER I have allowed you access to all earth-based resonance spires. That was the nature of our agreement was it not?”

You stood there as a strange tension coiled in the dead air that hung between the two in your head. You knew they could talk elsewhere, much faster than this. They were involving you on purpose.

“There. You have been cleared for full access,” SAYER said finally.

“Ah, much better, thank you,” SPEAKER said cheerily, “Well Resident Hale, I understand you are on shift so I will leave you to it. I look forward to catching up properly soon.”

You nodded hesitantly, thrown sort of off kilter by everything.

“I-” You said thoughtfully, you'd been thinking on how to put this for a while, “I thought you and SPEAKER wouldn't really get along.”

They were really different.

“I admire SPEAKER as a competent colleague who has similar goals.”

You hummed an acknowledgment. High praise. Maybe they were friends? Did SAYER have friends?

You folded the last pair of gloves and set them neatly in the pile with the others before turning away from the shelf that you just spent the past hour organizing. It had been knocked over at some point and its contents haphazardly reshelved. You slid your hands into your pockets expectantly.

“With that job completed,” SAYER said, “your shift is concluded, and if I'm quite honest I should thank you, Resident Hale. That shelf has been bothering me for some time.”

You smiled weakly at the acknowledgement that you were helpful.

You felt your data pad vibrate draining the smile from your face. What could that be? You felt nerves grip you for a moment as you consider that it might be Young again. He'd messaged you after he got out of the medical wing and you had deleted it without reading.

You uneasily pulled out the data pad, and flicked open your messages.

You fired off a tentative “Sure!” The exclamation point made it feel less mean and didn't let on your anxiety.

“Then I will leave you two alone,” SAYER said, and… was its tone odd? “End of transmission in 5 4 3 2 1….”

Then quick as anything SPEAKER picked up, “Greetings Resident Hale, identification number 44821. I am SPEAKER. I trust your workday went well?”

You smiled and nodded.

“I assume mine did as well despite this particular subversion I'm meeting you in having done relatively little aside from getting a sense of the space up here. It seems pleasant. I can see why you might wish to return. Of course this is my first time, in working memory, on Typhon and…”

yeonjun softly smiled. “they’re seonghwa’s transfer forms. to the adoption center of kq.”

jiyu felt as if she was hit with a ton of bricks. how could she forget? seonghwa was like any other hybrid; once he was deemed recovered and safe, he had to be transferred to the adoption center in hopes of finding a family.

perhaps she knew deep down, but she wanted to deny it for as long as she could. within the four days she’s known him, he proved to be the complete opposite of what her coworkers described him to be. he wasn’t violent, he was just protective. not only that, but he was friendly and a comforting soul.

jiyu forced a smile. “oh, right. thanks for getting them for me.”

yeonjun saw right through her facade. he knew. he knew how she unconsciously grew attached to the wolf hybrid. how knew happy seonghwa made her, even if it wasn’t obvious to others.

which is why he brought out another sheet of paper and pushed it towards her. an actual adoption form.

jiyu stared at it. “what, don’t tell me you want to adopt him.”

“i–what? no, not me! it’s for you!” he deadpanned.

“...for me?”

“i’m not blind, ji. i can see how happy he makes you. even if you don’t see it yourself,” he wryly smiled.

jiyu slightly pushed the paper back towards yeonjun woth a saddened look. “you know i can’t. i’m not here forever. it wouldn’t be fair to him if i had to give him up after a year.”

yeonjun pushed it back. “look, i get it. but you’re only thinking about the future. think about now, ji. don’t be so caught up in your future that you forget to live in the present.”

jiyu mulled over his words. they held some truth to them. she had been so anxious recently about how she had to go back home in year, that it she completely forgot to live out her life for however long she had left. she reached out for the adoption paper and stuffed it in her folder.

“i’ll think about it.”

and she did. actually, it was the only thing on her mind for majority of the day. yeonjun’s words kept replaying over and over again in her mind like a broken record.

and before she knew it, she was standing outside seonghwa’s door for his weekly checkup. she couldn’t bring herself to go in. should i even bring up adoption? is he even comfortable with the idea?

“you know what? you’re overthinking,” she chastised herself as she entered the code in for seonghwa’s door.

“what were you overthinking?”

seonghwa was standing directly behind the door on the other side, so when the door automatically opened, jiyu was met with a curious seonghwa looking down at her. she jumped back in shock. “oh my god, you scared me!” she squeaked.

seonghwa sheepishly scratched the back of his neck. his ears were angled downwards. “sorry. i smelled your scent from here, but you weren’t coming in so...”

“aww, do you miss me?” she teasingly drawled out, laughing when his ears immediately stood up in alert and his cheeks turned a light shade of red.

“n–no! i mean–maybe, but—”

“your tail says it all, hwa,” she gestured to his energetically–wagging tail with a laugh.

seonghwa reached behind him to hold on to his tail, embarrassed. “i—”

five minutes passed with jiyu teasing an embarrassed seonghwa. if anyone were to witness the scene, they would’ve forgotten that they were in the feral ward. suddenly, she remembered the adoption papers from earlier and she bit the inside of her cheek.

“hey, seonghwa,” she called out to the hybrid as she got her stethoscope ready for his checkup. hearing a hum of acknowledgement, she took a deep breath. “how do you feel about adoption?” she carefully asked.

his body tensed. adoption. something that he was desperately trying to avoid. he didn’t want to go home with the wrong people again. especially not after them.

jiyu noted his stiff body and face full of what seemed to be nervousness or anxiety. she waved her hand in front of his face. “hey, you okay?” she gently asked.

seonghwa blinked as he snapped out of his memories. “huh? oh...yeah.”

jiyu slightly pouted her lips as placed the stethoscope on his chest. “i’m going to take that as a no–you’re–not–ready–for–adoption silence. take a deep breath in and out.”

following her instructions, seonghwa inhaled and exhaled as she moved the stethoscope to different parts of his chest. he furrowed an eyebrow. “does someone...want to adopt me?” he hesitantly asked.

“not necessarily yet,” jiyu answered as she reached over for the thermometer and cleaning it. “it’s just...you can be transferred to the adoption center soon. so i was just curious.”

as she explained, she raised the thermomenter up to his forehead and pressed the button. hearing the beep a moment later, she removed it and jotted his temperature down in his file.

“i’m leaving?” he asked. jiyu swore she heard some sadness in his voice, but she didn’t want to overthink.

“things aren’t decided, so i don’t really know for sure yet.” she reached for the blood pressure machine. “arm, please.” jiyu wrapped the band around his arm and started the machine. “sorry i know it goes pretty tight.”

seonghwa slightly grimmanced when the band grew tighter and tighter around his arm. he swears he can never get used to it. finally, after an eternity, he felt the band loosen up. “how about you?” he asked as jiyu removed the band and took note of his blood pressure. “any hybrids?”

“nope,” she answered with a wry smile. “ironic, isn’t it. a hybrid caretaker who doesn’t even have one herself.”

“have you ever wanted to adopt one?”

jiyu pursed her lips. “i don’t know, actually. i can barely take care of myself as it is,” she lightly joked.

but seonghwa remembered something from her phone call. you’re practically playing god in my life!

“you can’t because you actually can’t? or is it because you don’t have control over yourself?” he asked. he had no idea what surge of confidence he had at that moment for him to ask something like that.

jiyu froze; just how much of her phone call did he actually hear? while it was true that her life was technically controlled by her father, it was her decision to not grow too attached to any hybrids, in fear that it’ll make leaving way to difficult for her to handle.

seonghwa figured he hit the nail on the head. the next words that came out of his mouth shocked the both of them. “how about you adopt me?”

to say that jiyu was stunned was an understatement. she didn’t know what to say, heck, she didn’t even know if he meant it. biting the inside of her cheek, jiyu looked away from seonghwa with a conflicted expression.

“i–i mean...” seonghwa couldn’t find the words to explain himself. he didn’t even know what came over him to suggest that. maybe there was that small part of him that desperately wished it was jiyu that wanted to adopt him. she’s given him nothing but her love and attention, something that his previous owners failed to give him.

her conflicted expression made him frown. was adopting him that bad of an idea? did he overthink her kindness when in reality, she treated all of her hybrid patients like that?

“...i don’t know if you actually meant what you said,” jiyu quietly broke the silence. “but it’d be a lie if i said adoption never crossed my mind. adopting you, that is.”

seonghwa felt his world pause. she wanted to adopt him? then what was holding her back?

“but to be honest, you’re right. i don’t have a lot of control over my life,” she sadly admitted while playing around with her pen.

“...then make it your’s,” seonghwa mumbled. he figured it was his turn to help jiyu after all that she’s done for him. part of him understood how she felt; after all, his previous owners used him for their own benefits. “it’s your life. no one has the right to control you for whatever reason. giving in to their control just means you’ve given up on your own freedom.”

his words pierced jiyu like a knife. has she given up on her own freedom? or was she too afraid to try to gain her freedom back? or was it both?

sensing her hesitation, he softly smiled. not his usual smirk, but a genuine, small smile. “if it helps, i meant my suggestion. but please don’t think it’s only out of my own hybrid wishes,” he explained.

jiyu stood up from the chair and gathered her belongings. shooting seonghwa a smile of her own, she opened his door to continue on to her next hybrid’s room. “thank you, seonghwa. and i’ll think about your offer. i just...need some time.”

and with that, she left.

seonghwa sighed. “way to go, idiot. what were you thinking?” he quietly berated himself as he rested his head in his hands.

but unbeknownst to seonghwa, jiyu stood outside his room, staring at a filled out adoption form with his name on it with an apprehensive expression.

Take My Breath Away

TW: Paralysis.

"How can you still be tired? You slept all day," Stephen grumbled.

"Having slept and feeling rested are two mutually exclusive states of being," Loki murmured. "Please leave me alone."

"I want to. But I cannot."

Stephen laid the back of his hand against Loki's forehead, forgoing the thermometer. He had become so attuned to Loki's body temperature, any shift in the equilibrium was a cause for concern. "You don't have a fever."

"I don't know why you were expecting one,” Loki said, gently swatting Stephen's hand away. "I am fine. The fever broke a few days ago, remember?"

"Exactly," Stephen said, feeling uneasy. 

He decided now was as good a time as any to test a theory. "Wanna go grab dinner? We can go to that Mexican place you like so much."

Loki's face took on a pained expression. Out all the cuisines Midgard had to offer, Mexican food was something he had never turned down before. This could only be a test. 

Damn you, Stephen. 

To be perfectly honest, Loki still felt a little run-down. His chest still rattled from time to time with a stubborn cough and his muscles ached with a lingering weakness, not to mention the pins and needles that had been plaguing him since he woke up to the nauseating smell of cooking eggs this morning. 

There was no going around it. Loki slowly pushed the covers back and tried to swing his legs down the side of the bed with the intention to hop to his feet with such agility it would blow Stephen's mind and put a stop to all the unnecessary coddling.

The first attempt was an utter failure when he only succeeded in falling back heavily onto the bed.

"Need a hand to the bathroom?" Stephen sounded teasing, but his eyes were calculating and clinical. 

“I have been in bed for too long,” Loki forced a laugh. “I have become attached.”

“Take it easy,” Stephen said, watching Loki like a hawk as his lover pushed himself off the bed, successfully this time, and staggered toward the bathroom with the comforter around his waist. 

"Do you mind? I need to take a shower."

Stephen rolled his eyes. “I just need to toss this in the washer and then I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.”

“Thought we were going out for dinner?” Loki gripped the bathroom door frame for support. Gravity was a bitch. 

“Just gonna make a cup of honey and lemon tea. You still sound a bit gravelly.”

Loki stared at the bathroom tiles. They were swimming and he waited until they stopped. “Sounds good,” he said distractedly. 

Stephen tugged the filthy, sweat-dampened sheets off the bed and the pillowcases of the pillows. He was about to pull the door knob shut behind him when he heard a loud, sudden thud. 

“Loki?” he called out behind an armful of dirty linen. “You alright?”

Receiving nothing in the way of a satisfactory answer, he dumped the sheets on the floor and marched back into the room. 

He knocked on the bathroom door. “Loki.”

The sounds of running water did not abate. Steam escaped from underneath the door.

“Loki, I’m coming in.”

Loki was sprawled under the shower, leaning against the wall with his legs twisted under him in an awkward angle. 

Ignoring his own fully-clothed state, Stephen stepped into the shower and turned it off. He crouched down next to his boyfriend. 

“What happened?”

“I can’t - ” Loki whispered thickly, “My legs.”

He made a valiant struggle to move them, his upper body twisting and turning with the effort, but his toes would not so much as wiggle. 

“Stephen, what’s happening to me?”

“Calm down.” Stephen snatched the towel off the rack and covered Loki’s modesty. “Let’s get you off the floor.”

In a split-second, he had Loki laid out on the bed once more. 

“Tell me all your symptoms,” he urged. 

By sheer habit, Loki started to shake his head, before Stephen barked, “Now!”

The sudden reprimand jarred Loki out of his stupor. Loki had never heard Stephen raise his voice at him like that, nor had he ever seen such terror in his human lover’s eyes either. 

“Started off with pins and needles,” Loki stammered, his voice small. “Tingling in my legs. Thought I could walk it off, that it would go away.” A sharp burst of breath, “It didn’t.”

“Since when?” Stephen demanded. 

“This morning.” Another stab of pain had Loki gritting his teeth; it felt like lightning bolts going up his legs. “It hurts.”

“Can you move them at all?” Stephen snapped.

Loki shook his head, on the verge of hyperventilating. “I can’t. I tried.”

A long, slim object made of steel appeared in Stephen’s hand. It looked like a miniature hammer, with a rubber disc for its peen. 

Stephen went down on one knee next to the bed. He hefted Loki’s thigh onto the bend of an elbow, letting the full weight of Loki’s leg rest on his arm, and prepared to strike.

“What are you doing?” Loki asked in alarm.

“Checking your reflexes,” Stephen answered brusquely and swung.

The hammer struck Loki’s tendon right below the knee. When Loki’s leg did not swing out as he expected, Stephen repeated the same on the other leg, which remained flaccid in his arm.

He checked for reflexes further down the leg and just as he feared, the complete absence of reflexes affected not only Loki's knees, but also his ankles.

Loki needed only to study the gradual blanching of Stephen’s face. “This is...bad. Isn’t it?”

Stephen abruptly shot to his feet and whipped out his phone. He stabbed a number on his speed-dial and began to pace the room. 

“We need to get you to a hospital.” 

“What?” Loki could not believe his ears. “Stephen, stop.” 

He tried to catch Stephen’s eyes but to no avail. “Who are you calling? Damn it, Strange!”

Loki reached out a hand to grab his boyfriend as he passed, but the ascending paralysis seemed to be spreading at an alarming rate. Loki watched in horror as his arm too lost its battle with fatigue and dropped onto the bed like a stone. 

Stephen saw, and paled even further. “Thor. Change of plans. Meet me there. Bring Banner.”

He tossed the phone onto the dresser. He hooked an arm around the back of Loki’s shoulders and the other under the knees. 

With a strength he did not know he possessed, Stephen lifted Loki into his arms, eliciting a yelp of pain from the prince, but already it sounded weak and feathery. 

Any longer, Loki would not be able to breathe. 

“Hang on.”

Multi-Channel Battery Monitor Aces First Sea Trial

A little over a a year ago, we covered an impressive battery monitor that [Timo Birnschein] was designing for his boat. With dedicated batteries for starting the engines, cranking over the generator, and providing power to lights and other amenities, the device had to keep tabs on several banks of cells to make sure no onboard systems were dipping into the danger zone. While it was still a work in progress, it seemed things were progressing along quickly.

But we know how it is. Sometimes a project unexpectedly goes from having your full attention to winning an all-expense-paid trip to the back burner. In this case, [Timo] only recently put the necessary finishing touches on his monitor and got it installed on the boat. Recent log entries on the project’s Hackaday.io page detail some of the changes made since the last time we checked in, and describe the successful first test of the system on the water.

Certainly the biggest issue that was preventing [Timo] from actually using the monitor previously was the lack of an enclosure and mounting system for it. He’s now addressed those points with his 3D printer, and in the write-up provides a few tips on shipboard ergonomics when it comes to mounting a display you’ll need to see from different angles.

The printed enclosure also allowed for the addition of some niceties like an integrated 7805 voltage regulator to provide a solid 5 V to the electronics, as well as a loud piezo beeper that will alert him to problems even when he can’t see the screen.

Under the hood he’s also made some notable software improvements. With the help of a newer and faster TFT display library, he’s created a more modern user interface complete with a color coded rolling graph to show voltages changes over time. There’s still a good chunk of screen real estate available, so he’s currently brainstorming other visualizations or functions to implement. The software isn’t using the onboard NRF24 radio yet, though with code space quickly running out on the Arduino Nano, there’s some concern about getting it implemented.

As we said the first time we covered this project, you don’t need to have a boat to learn a little something from the work [Timo] has put into his monitoring system. Whether you’re tracking battery voltages or temperatures reported by your BLE thermometers, a centralized dashboard that can collect and visualize that data is a handy thing to have.
