South Africa No Longer Publishing TV Ratings Data
Tumblr media
For the last 10 years or so, South Africa's top television shows and their ratings were posted via the BRCSA's website, however since the beginning of 2025, the Broadcasting Research Council Of South Africa haven't posted a single month worth of ratings.
Thinus Ferreira posted a blog on teeveetee.blogpot.com in which he reports that some insiders in the media and television industries feel the lack of transparency noting that it is impossible to know what is true when it comes to broadcast television viewership anymore.
This comes on the back of some very big changes in South Africa's television viewership of the last 2023.
Hanno Labuschagne wrote an article on broadband.co.za in which he noted how cord cutting had changed the viewing habits of South Africans since October of 2023.
This isn't happening in a vacuum or without reaction from South Africa's local broadcasting powers, both corporate and public.
In March of 2025, Multichoice and DSTV signed a deal with 8 of the top podcasts in South Africa to produce content for television audiences.
While MacG's time with DSTV did not last long in light of these controversies, it all coincides with several podcasts now being aired on South Africa's local broadcaster, the SABC. Skeem GP, Chillin' With Mac G, have all begun airing full hour-long podcast episodes this year and surely more to come.
These changes were at first thought to be the reason ratings have stopped being made public, but over the last few months more details have emerged.
Tumblr media
There is clearly some need for recalibration and refinement of how the BRCSA compiles it's statistical readings, and maybe incorporating YouTube viewership metrics as well, but to completely shut down any and all information is somewhat perplexing.
This need for recalibration isn't just on the data and statistical compilation end either. There are calls for South Africa's local broadcaster the BCCSA to begin regulating South African podcasts.
This is being spurred on by recent controversies involving Mac G and Minnie Dlamini and while the internet is getting their giggles out of it, the ramifications at a regulatory and policy level will be far more wide-reaching than that.
youtube
Khusela Diko is the chairperson of the Parliament Communications Commitee and during her interview with SABC News, she notes how many of the current existing regulatory standards and guidelines were put in place at a time when platforms like podcasts didn't exist and she's also keen to warn that it is not intended as way of policing free speech.
These are massive wide-sweeping changes happening in the television and on-line content creation space, all within the last 5 months, hence why the lack of clarity with regards to television ratings is even more alarming.
Tinus Ferreira reports that The BRCSA have told him that granting free access to those viewership rating undermines the value of being paying a member of the BRC.
So it's increasingly becoming apparent that these stats will now only be available to those that join the BRC, and most importantly those who pay.
Through a combination of cord-cutting and regulatory bodies needing to reassure their members of a competitive edge, has put the entire broadcast industry in a kind of momentary tailspin, and I fear that the real loser in all of this, will be the South African public.
The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa is made up of various heads of media companies and radio stations and the only way to interpret their actions is as an attempt to gain a competitive advantage while at the same time increasing the influence of the Council itself.
I hate to be paranoid but it all of this looks like political maneuvering.
Tumblr media
For more than a decade, tvsa.co.za reliably published the monthly tv ratings and for that entire duration of time, the amount of information being shared has been scaled back more and more.
The report posted by tvsa.co.za was even more damning and justifies my fears, and they report how changes in what was once the South African Advertising Reasearch Foundation, has since been replaced by the Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa, have slowly put more and more limitations on the amount of information that was once freely available.
The erosion of this availability has now turned into no information being available at all. This follows a 2016 price hike in which a R50000 per year fee was imposed for viewership rating data they had previously provided for free.
Does it feel illegal? Very.
There is a case to be made regarding how ethical it is to monopolize information, and I would bet that there is a court case in there somewhere.
Public access to information like this should be a public right, especially if it was once available and accessible and has since been hidden behind a steep paywall.
It's one thing for the BRCSA to look to provide value to the individuals that subscribe as members, it's another to impose austerity behind a paywall.
It's a massive shame and it's not being reported in any mainstream media how transparency is being hidden.

Hi 😁
Give me three words and I'll do a story with them : A character (man, woman, dog, dragon, etc.), a place (forest, city, mountain, castle, etc) and an item (pencil, shoe, paper, instrument, etc).
___________________________________________
Salut 😁
Donnez-moi trois mots et j'en ferai une histoire : Un personnage, un lieu et un objet, réels ou non.
Juste un mot inventé aussi, c'est possible, je lui donnerai un sens.
On se retrouve pour les histoires, a plus tard 👋

as a writer my relationship with dragon age can be summed up by that one interview where it’s gaider, jhep and someone else talking about the exalted march dlc, and at one point someone brings up, “yeah we were gonna have you meet justice still inside of kristoff and he’d be like, ‘kirkwall? i never went to kirkwall.’”
and in the five seconds before i read the next line my brain went, holy shit that’s genius— so anders was never possessed? he was just radicalized the way anyone who had his experiences would be? and the possession was an invention of varric’s— maybe he mentioned justice to varric over drinks once— an exoneration, an insanity plea, and, subconsciously, a personal way of coping with the fact that his friend did something that ripped his home apart. holy shit, that is actually such an incredible way of using the frame story of da2, what the fuck—
and then the next line someone else says, “yep, because the demon that possessed anders was just a random demon that tricked him into thinking it was justice.”
and im just like oh. right. this is dragon age. ok.

Something I really miss about the older Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games is rival couples. Mostly thinking about Animal Parade where rival couples could get married and have kids and their kids can even have cut-scene events playing with your kids.
I'll just say it, getting two NPCs/ characters together is *way* more satisfying to me than player romance/marriageable candidates. Makes it more like you can exist in this world rather than the world existing for you. People keep complaining about characters being "player-sexual", well you know what an easy solution to that one is? Make NPCs/Companions that are just not into you, bro.
