Today's 12 Days of Dollstagram challenge on Instagram is Nutcracker! I find it fitting that Kenleigh is watching Barbie in The Nutcracker, both for the challenge and to commemorate the movie's 20th anniversary. That's right, the very first Barbie movie ever made turns 20 this year! I remember when it came out - I was in middle school. :D Ah, the memories!

This page, from Terrifics 11, always breaks my heart, not going to lie. It really contexualizes Plas’ character into a man who is so committed to being one thing, a hero, that he doesn’t (or maybe can’t) let himself be anything else, like a father and husband.
To me, that gels a whole ton more with his characterization from way back in the Golden Age. Then, you NEVER saw Eel even referenced after issue 26*. He got depressed at the thought of being unable to be a hero. And not because he was a gloryhound, but because it’s just who he is
He lived and breathed being Plastic Man, he never was (or maybe let himself be) anything or anyone else. No romance, no raising a family, just being Plastic Man. His home was even addressed in name of Plastic Man!
So seeing Plas that actually had a family, actually let himself fall in love with someone, raise a son, and then having it all fall apart because he can’t let go of being a hero… it’s sad. But good stuff.
But really, it’s all how I see it, and how I feel about it. It’s probably not what anyone else thinks of it, haha.
* The last story Eel was used as an alternate identity for Plastic Man was issue 14, and was last SEEN in issue 19 (in what I feel is a very character defining moment)

have you ever considered the wasteland is so dirty and full of litter bc in this universe America’s culture never touched on how horrible it is for the general populace. it’s kind of obvious to us now that littering is bad, the environment needs saving, but there’s been PSAs and Keep America Beautiful campaigns and italians crying in buckskin for us to get to this point. and lets not forget that your current environment may seem very clean, but a lot of that is not due to how well the average person tosses their trash, but because there are workers on a local level who pick up litter on highways, sidewalks. people come every week to pick up your personal trash. what would you do with everything you toss if someone did not come once a week to magically whisk it away? i know there are street sweepers sitting in disrepair in fallout 3, so there was at least some level of keeping things clean in the city. but I can’t remember seeing any posters or anything similar about picking up your trash, etc. on the individual level.

Recently, I was commissioned to make a custom Barbie for my husband's coworker. She was looking at a group she was in on Facebook, and stumbled across a photo of a necromancer Barbie. Hubby saw it and immediately said, "My wife could probably make that for you!" She said that would be awesome and even offered to pay me for it. :D
So I looked at the picture and knew right away where to get an outfit, and the rest of the props I could make myself with the exception of the dagger. For the doll, she wanted it to look as much like her in real life as possible - and hubby said her hair is a shade or two lighter than mine. I knew right away which doll to use. My hair shade is so weird and it's hard to find a match, but lighter is no problem! And my Walmart actually had the doll in stock, and she was a super cheap one, so win-win! And I had an extra body at home that had more articulation (and a non-painted-on outfit) that was the right skin tone. Woo! And I had a ton of extra black shoes - so many that I took a picture of them and let her choose which ones she wanted haha.
Next up came the face paint. For this dark/gothic look (that's what she's into and what she wanted), I looked up how to give dolls a smoky eye makeup effect. Then I experimented. I wound up using a small paintbrush and watering down black paint, then lightly brushing it along the eyelids to pull off the look. I replicated the effect for under the eyes, and then I mixed some purple and black paint together to get the lipstick. And I also added some black paint to the fingernails - to which my husband said, "How?!" LOL It blows him away how I can work with such tiny things! :D
I also managed to find some teeny tiny charms on Etsy of a pentagram and an ankh, so I used my little jewelry tweezers to put them on chains. The pentagram was only available in copper, so I painted it silver to go with the theme better.
So then it was time for the photo shoot, and she was ready to go! The client absolutely loved her and paid more for her than what I spent on making her. :D That's a nice feeling, that she was so pleased with her! So here we are, the inspiration, before, and after!

waste and space junk
A bouquet of flowers stuck
in motion blur. Somehow
your sky was sharp
like teeth. But we don't make
shapes from the clouds.
The things our imaginations cannot create
anymore. You see a fluffy puppy-dragon and I look beyond to see
a ring of space trash eating
my chances at stargazing.
I used to be a romantic. But now
all I think about is the amount of plastic
waste it takes to function in a life
I am barely noticing
anymore. A waste.
You see something beautiful in your hands. I see
the gallons of fresh water it took
to accept your flower-accented apology
and all the people who are thirsty.
The fact that something was cut because
it was its time to bloom. Wrapped in more plastic.
I take your
bouquet and know
I am holding a beautiful, dying thing.
