lowk i wanna get into hockey
whats happening now…
has the season started yet..? does it ever even end…
hi !! so glad you want to get into hockey its an incredible sport (and my favourite). right now the nhl regular season is over and the postseason is *almost* over. the stanley cup finals are upon us this week, which i dont know if i'll watch due to um. severely disliking both teams haha. but thats where we are with the season!
regular season runs from early october through early april; each team plays 82 games total in that time, and at the end of the season the four playoff rounds start. my team (vancouver canucks) did *not* make the playoffs this season due to genuinely everything going wrong, but i'm hoping next season will be better -- they're a really fun team despite the curse, and i'm always looking for people to lure into the fanbase, although picking your own team (based on location, vibes, or anything at all) is also a great idea.
(more general nhl stuff below the cut, a LOT more, but if you want more info feel free to jump into my dms!)
there are 32 total teams in the nhl right now, 6 of which have been there since the start -- the other 26 have been added at various points along the way. the teams are divided equally into conferences (east and west), and each conference is divided again into divisions (eastern conference is divided into atlantic and metropolitan; western conference is divided into pacific and central). so each division has 8 teams and each conference has 16 teams.
who makes it into the playoffs is determined as follows: the top 3 teams from each division (so, 12 total) automatically qualify; then the top 2 *remaining* teams from each conference (so, 4 more) are added, to get 16 total -- exactly half the nhl. then each team is matched against another team from the same conference, and they play a best of 7 elimination series to get to the next round, and so forth and so on until we have one victor. this year we ended up having the same two teams for the final round as last year, which is. fine. probably really great if you love those teams, but i *am* biased lmao
it's a game with 60 minutes of total play, divided into three 20-minute periods, with two 18-minute intermissions in between. if a game in the regular season is tied at the end, it goes to 5 minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, in which the first team to score instantly wins. if nobody scores within that time frame the game goes to a shootout, in which teams put their best shooters out in a best-of-three attempt to score on the opposing goaltender. whoever scores more in the shootout wins the game. 2 points are awarded to any regular season win, no matter if its in regulation time or overtime; 0 points to a loss in regulation; and 1 point to a loss in overtime/shootout.
there are three positions in hockey, which i'm going to very briefly explain and give a few examples in the nhl so you can look up different styles of play for each of those positions if you want (sorry i'm just fully nerding out now):
goaltender -- tends the goal. only one on the ice at a time, and generally two on the team. a few great modern examples are marc-andre fleury, roberto luongo, carey price, juuse saros, and thatcher demko;
defence -- general job is prevent opponents from having chances to score. two on the ice at a time, one on each side, and at least 6 on the team. a few modern examples: cale makar, chris tanev, jaccob slavin, quinn hughes, zach werenski;
and forward -- generally responsible for most scoring; 3-person units (known as lines) with at least 12 forwards on the team. lines are divided into left wing, centre, and right wing, and typically players can only play one (or sometimes maybe two) of those positions. examples: sidney crosby, daniel and henrik sedin (twins!!!), alex ovechkin, connor bedard, travis konecny, connor mcdavid ... honestly most of the Big Names in hockey are forwards.
um. there are So Many Rules. this is already pretty long and idek if you wanted this whole essay so i'll leave it here, but as i said already my dms are super open for *any* hockey questions and there are a lot of things like youtube videos explaining nhl rules. although i can definitely do that too fhskkfdkg
oh and there are also other leagues .. whl my beloved junior teams .. pwhl WOMENS HOCKEY coming soon to a city sort of close to me .. there is so much hockey all of the time except during summer but even then there *is* australian hockey i just havent fully gotten into it yet .. okay cutting myself off now this is long enough

i want to get into hockey but i have no idea where to start 😭
hello!!! hockey is a truly wild sport with an extremely rabid and toxic fanbase, but it's one of the toughest, skilled, and most entertaining sports in the entire world. the action and pace of the game is extremely fast, so there's never a dull moment. also in my opinion, winning a championship in this sport is the hardest to achieve in all of sports. but to start out 😅:
this is a really amazing intro post that is pretty all-encompassing of the basics of hockey/rules/stats etc. it's a bit outdated but still a really decent resource
it can be pretty overwhelming to start to get into just with all of the different facets of the game, but many people will typically choose a team to follow (they live near the team, they like the vibes, etc) or they follow a specific player they enjoy and get into various teams that way.
the NHL (national hockey league) is definitely considered the TOP league in the sport. you'll basically find all of the best hockey players in the world playing in this league.
there are currently 32 teams in the NHL, which are grouped based on team location for the most part
Eastern Conference:
Metropolitan Division: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals
Atlantic Division: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs
Western Conference:
Central Division: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Utah Hockey Club, Winnipeg Jets
Pacific Divison: Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights
so just by following a team (contrary to the haters and hockey purists, you CAN follow and be a fan of multiple teams) you can learn a lot about the sport just through watching the games and even listening to the commentary on the broadcasts will give you game insights, which by the way, i have to say they make watching hockey so fucking difficult. so if you don't want to pay for it i would recommend these streaming sites:
nhl66.ir
onhockey.tv (this one has all the leagues usually)
v3.sportsurge.to
i've been watching this sport for a loooooong ass time it's almost embarrassing so if you ever have questions i would be more than happy to answer them :)

My new mutual has encouraged me to ramble
That was a mistake because I could yap for hours
Unfortunately, I also have a job, so I can't yap as much as I want to right now
But i have ideas so just you wait
In the meantime, here is a nice list of how hockey teams are organized because I already have it typed up
(Yes, this is fairly useless information, but shhhhhh)
There are 32 NHL teams and they're all divided into two categories based on time zone and location.
The first category is the Eastern and Western Conferences, and then they're divided in two divisions per Conference.
Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division:
- Boston Bruins
- Buffalo Sabres
- Detroit Red Wings
- Florida Panthers
- Montreal Canadiens
- Ottawa Senators
- Tampa Bay Lightning
- Toronto Maple Leafs
Metropolitan Division:
- Carolina Hurricanes
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- New Jersey Devils
- New York Islanders
- New York Rangers
- Philadelphia Flyers
- Pittsburgh Penguins
- Washington Capitals
Western Conference
Central Division:
- Chicago Blackhawks
- Colorado Avalanche
- Dallas Stars
- Minnesota Wild

- Utah Hockey Club
- Winnipeg Jets
Pacific Division:
- Anaheim Ducks
- Calgary Flames
- Edmonton Oilers
- Los Angeles Kings
- San Jose Sharks
- Seattle Kraken
- Vancouver Canucks
- Vegas Golden Knights
25 of the 32 NHL teams are based somewhere in the United States, and the remaining 7 are in Canada.
I have a map, so here it is:

Hockey Fast Facts
In which a series of random hockey facts are presented to teach the history of the NHL
@heliads
The NHL was founded on November 26th, 1917 and was founded after the suspension of the National Hockey Association
Initially the NHL only consisted of 4 teams for the initial 1917-1918 and all four were based in Canada. The only still active team is the Montreal Canadiens who have often been referred to as the Habs.
Although there were a few teams who joined the NHL after that first season in 1917, none of those teams are still in existence. The second oldest team in the NHL are the Boston Bruins who first joined in the 1924-1925 season. That season consisted of 6 teams in total.
Divisions were first introduced in the 1926-1927 season and consisted of the Canadian and American divisions although one team from New York was included in the Canadian division. Today there are four divisions: the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions.
You may come to hear of people referring to some teams as part of the ‘Original Six’. This is in reference to the six teams that made up the NHL from the 1942 season through the 1967 season. The teams in question are the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The 1967-1968 team introduced 6 new teams to the NHL and creating the East and West Divisions of the NHL. The Original Six were made a part of the Eastern Division with the new 6 teams making up the West Division. Although the divisions would change in seasons after, the East and West Divisions would eventually return and are still used to this day.
Many teams came and went but by the 1974-1975 season, a total of 18 teams were active in the NHL. This season brought change to the NHLs game structure with the introduction of teams being split into Conferences and then Divisions. The Conferences were: Prince of Wales Conference (holding the Adams and Norris divisions). And the Campbell Conference (holding the Patrick and Smythe divisions)
The 1979-1980 season saw a total of 21 teams in the NHL as the WHA (World Hockey Association) disbanded. The four teams were the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques. Only the Jets and Oilers are current teams.
The 1993-1994 season saw a change in title to the Conferences and Divisions as well as teams rearranging and landing in different divisions. The Eastern and Western Conferences with the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions is the current format to this day. However from the 1998 season through the 2013-2014 season there were 3 divisions per Conference.
No hockey was played in the 2004-2005 season due to an unresolved lockout. As such no Stanley Cup was awarded and what is engraved on the Cup for this instance is ‘Season Not Played’
For the most part that brings us to how the league stands today. There were a few more team expansions which bring up the total number of competing teams to 32 but that’s basically league history
Note: I am planning some info posts about the teams where I’ll go more in depth on aspects like expansions, important players, etc. Wanted to keep this post fairly straightforward and as short as I could for the time being!

the teams
remember when I said I renamed all the 21 (AT THE TIME) NHL teams? well here there are; here you go. Also back in 86, the conferences and divisions all had different names. I did not change the conference/division names, but I will add their modern ones. It's all under the thing. don't worry
also, teams have changed divisions/conferences quite a bit. This probably doesn't reflect current conference/division teams (I know for a fact my Red Wings are eastern conf, atlantic div now instead of western, central). Both Eastern and western used to have three divisions in the late 90s.
The AU team names are all Tomcat squadron names.
For reference "City Fictional Team Name (actual name, modern equivalent if different) - Tomcat Squadron number " this also applies to the conf/divs historical name (modern name)
Prince of Wales (Eastern) Conference
Adams Division (Atlantic)
Boston Tomcatters (Bruins) - VF 31
Buffalo Freelancers (Sabres) - VF 21
Hartford Renegades (Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes) - VF 24
Montreal Swordsmen (Canadiens) - VF 32
Quebec Rippers (Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche) - VF 11
Patrick (Metropolitan)
New Jersey Be-Devilers (Devils) - VF 74
New York Starfighters (Islanders) - VF 33
New York Sluggers (Rangers) - VF 103
Philadelphia Screaming Eagles (Flyers) - VF 201
Pittsburgh Hunters (Penguins) - VF 51
Washington Grim Reapers (Captials) - VF 101
Campbell (Western) Conference
Norris (Central)
Chicago Diamondbacks (Blackhawks) - VF 102
Detroit Black Aces (Red Wings) - VF-41
Minnesota Stallions (North Stars, Dallas Stars) - VF 302
St. Louis Superheats (Blues) - VF 202
Toronto Ghostriders (Maple Leafs) - VF 142
Smythe (Pacific)
Calgary Lions (Flames) - Black Lions - VF 213
Edmonton Gunfighters (Oilers) - VF 124
LA Checkmates (Kings) - VF 211
Vancouver Knights (Canucks) Black Knights - VF 152
Winnipeg Hellcats (Jets) - Satan’s Kittens VF 191
Most squad names were chosen because it sounded cool/good saying it all together. Some (Philly and NJ) were chosen because of the similarities to current pro team names (NJ Devils (NHL) and Philly Eagles (NFL)). Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Calgary I did change slightly from the squad name. Vanc/Calg because I already had a "black" in a team name (Aces). Winnipeg because "satan's kittens" is kind of a mouthful; I just used their squadron call sign "hellcats" instead.

Successes: Although the Panthers have yet to win the Stanley Cup, they have enjoyed some good seasons. They have won their division numerous times and made several playoff appearances, most recently in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons.
Roster: The Panthers, like all NHL teams, have a roster of talented players from all over the world. In recent years, notable players have included Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Aaron Ekblad.
Fan Base: Although hockey is not as popular in Florida as it is in certain northern locations, the Panthers have a devoted following. With recent success and promising young players, interest in the team has grown.
Overall, the Florida Panthers play a vital role in the NHL, representing hockey in the southern United States while also adding to the league's diversity and growth.

The Caps and Sharks played each other again today and Shmedia dropped some more quotes, putting it here:
Warsofsky, Carbery Go to Bednar for Advice - by Felicia Keller (link)
Jared Bednar knows a little something about Ryan Warsofsky’s experience this season with the San Jose Sharks.
In Bednar’s first year coaching in the NHL, the 2016-2017 Colorado Avalanche won just 22 games for 48 points, their .293 Points % the third-worst in the salary cap era.
“It’s not easy,” Bednar told San Jose Hockey Now last week, of that first season.
Comparably, rookie head coach Warsofsky and the last-place San Jose Sharks have a .336 Points % with 15 games remaining this season.
Warsofsky said he’s connected with Bednar throughout the year for support.
As has head coach Spencer Carbery, whose Washington Capitals are in a different place in the standings, first in the Eastern Conference with a .712 Points %, heading into Saturday afternoon’s showdown at SAP Center.
Warsofsky, Bednar, and Carbery were all behind the bench for the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, Bednar from 2007 to 2009, Carbery from 2011 to 2016, and Warsofsky from 2016 to 2018.
“He’s been the one guy that I’ve reached out to a lot about our situation. Obviously he took over here [in Colorado], had a tough first year, in a similar sense,” Warsofsky said of Bednar. “He’s been a big sounding board for me and very supportive, obviously, a really good coach, and has won at all three levels. So you just try to lean on him and ask him a lot of questions.”
Bednar noted how difficult it can be when a struggling team is playing well and working hard but the results aren’t coming.
“Eventually the results will come. It’s hard to keep a team that’s losing all the time positive,” Bednar said. “It’s frustrating, because you want your guys to get rewarded for the right type of play, and it doesn’t always come. I think you got to still take the positives out of that, but still be hard on guys when you need to be if they’re not doing the right things.”
Carbery said he’s also learned about focusing on the positives from Bednar.
“What matters is your team’s getting better and your individual players are getting better,” Carbery said. “If you can focus on that day to day, even though it gets hard because you lose and you go through that, but if you can make each individual player a little bit better day after day after day…If you can continue to keep that in sight, which I know Warso will do, this team will continue to get better.”
Carbery – who took over behind the bench for the Washington Capitals ahead of the 2023-2024 season – added that Bednar’s success in turning things around is something he’s learned a lot from too.
“I took a lot from that, even last year” Carbery said. “Beds, he was really good about helping us with this, you have to look at the big picture, and you have to focus on the development. You have to focus on taking the next steps with your team.”
Bednar was able to turn things around for the Colorado Avalanche, making the playoffs the next season, and winning the Stanley Cup five seasons later.
And Spencer Carbery has the Capitals in first place in the Metropolitan Division – and tied for first in the NHL for the moment – in his second year.
Sharks fans surely hope Warsofsky’s trajectory will be similar. But it starts with one day at a time.
“If Macklin Celebrini gets better for the next 600 days, I promise you, the San Jose Sharks will be a better team,” Carbery said, noting that future superstar Nathan MacKinnon was also on the 2016-17 Avs.

When you look at the Sharks where do you see the impact your buddy Ryan has had on the way they've kind of come along here in the last month or so?
Carbery: [They] compete their butts off, continue to get better, um. (pause) And you just know you're gonna get a really really hard working competitive team tomorrow night. So I'm not surprised that they started - what were they, 0 and 9? 0 and 8?
0-7-2 or something like that.
Carbery: Yeah, so now they're - I think I ran the numbers this morning - 9-6 and 1 maybe, since then. Yeah. So there you go. That's not a surprise to me, 'cause I (pause, smile) know him very well and y'know it doesn't matter what - you know what you're gonna get from a [Warsofsky team], they're gonna push us tomorrow night I can guarantee you that.
editor's note: he actually said "warkin" ??? and I've chosen to read the context clues. And for joke purposes my esteemed colleagues have decided he sees Warso's Sharks as pikmin <3
Is he gonna give you something [inaudible] you prepared for [inaudible] some kind of surprise from him of some sort?
(smiling) Oh, I know it. Every time we play a Warsofsky team he's gonna do something - one thing off the wall. I'm planning for it. Something will be totally off-script, that'll be different from the pre-scout that we show.
some important context: Carbery and Warsofsky coached against each other in the AHL - from that first linked article:
“The day before we might chat,” Carbery said. “But once the game gets going -- and I coached against [Warsofsky] in the American Hockey League a bunch in Charlotte -- it’s game on.” How competitive does it get? Warsofsky admitted he changed Charlotte’s neutral-zone forecheck for one game against Hershey to give Carbery and his players a different look from what they saw on their pre-scout video. “I always try to throw a little wrinkle at ‘Carbs,’” Warsofsky said.
Carbery media following morning skate - December 3rd, 2024 [2:25 - 2:57] (link)
[You're] familiar with the coach on the other side, another game where you - maybe there's a little extra motivation for you?
Carbery: (smiling slowly) Yeah.
(everyone laughs)
Carbery: Yeah, any time Wars' - who I've gotten to know really well over our time that we spent together in... (pause, implying Carolina?) developing our friendship he's an ultra-competitive guy, so any time you can stick it to him is a, uh... (long pause while people laugh, nodding and smiling) It's a good day.
Ryan Warsofsky's introductory press conference - June 21st, 2024 [21:30 - 21:45] (link)
Warsofsky: Spencer Carbery, like I mentioned, I worked for him for three years. [He's] head coach in Washington right now. He's the man that molded me into the coach I am, so I need to thank Spence. He's one of my best friends. He's had a huge impact on my coaching career and I can't thank him enough.

(with all fairness to jersey, it isnt unlike the eastern division to NOT have multiple teams in a state. florida has two, pennsylvania has two, n*w y*rk is probably getting another one as we speak... it makes sense for jersey to also make a mess of it! BUT that does mean most gothamites will hate the hughes bros (other than quinn <3) because its a state rivalry thatll be worst than any real one—which is also worrisome when thinking about if a gotham villain will be passionate about home town loyalty...)
but this is very fascinating and leads to so many other questions... when no man's land was happening do you think they were disqualified or did they change arenas—if the later, did it cause some gothamites that stayed to no longer be fans because they felt betrayed? or did they form post nml? in this universe does the vegas golden knights not exist or are they under a new name? or is there two 'knight' teams? does another team in the eastern conference (specifically the metropolitan division) not exist or is it truly just a mess when it comes to fighting for playoff spots? does metropolis have a nhl team and are they the second rivals to the knights? is quinn still for the canucks or does he play for the knights because hockey loves the drama? how many villains were formed because gotham got swept in the first round of the playoffs?
