Did Joe really buy an entire vinyl collection just for Riley's visit that moment got me was the talking heads album something you planned from the start or did that connection just happen naturally in your writing

The vinyl collection scene has been one of my favorite scenes. It was kind of a turning point when I was writing - first time I felt like "oh wait, I'm onto something here."

The Talking Heads album wasn't planned at all - it just happened! I was listening to a random playlist while writing Chapter 5 and "This Must Be the Place" came on. It fit perfectly with what I wanted to show about Joe seeing Riley's New Orleans home.

I always wanted to contrast Joe's nice but kinda personality-free space with Riley's chaotic, lived-in home. I wanted Joe to realize that even though they seem super different on paper, he's drawn to something real in her world. That song with its lyrics about home being a feeling rather than a place just clicked with Joe's journey.

When Joe spots that album in the record store, it was my way of showing what was happening inside him - that initial "she's hot and I like her music" from The Tonight Show was becoming something deeper he wasn't expecting.

And yep, he absolutely did buy that small record collection! He'd been thinking about getting a turntable since NOLA, and when she decided to visit Cincinnati, he wanted to make her feel at home. He low-key wanted to make it harder for her to leave and maybe make her want to come back more often.

Obviously Interview with the Vampire season 2 fully consumed all of our lives this year. I hate to go with the obvious answer but yeahh, I think it has to be Don't Be Afraid, Just Start the Tape. I'm actually going to change my answer for song of the year to the Loumand fight.

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

Did you guess NOLA? Because if you did, YOU WOULD BE CORRECT. The food, the trees, the sunsets, the history of it all. I miss her. I must return to her.

10. What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?

Being terribly self indulgent, I had imagined a regency-adjacent au where Caius was some house servant that snuck into balls in the most beautiful gowns, as some noble lady from out of town and maybe Simon was a rogue in a travelling circus he fell for. Very silly nonsense, mostly just to imagine outfits for, shipping nonsense, and melodrama.

17. What is the worst thing you have put your OC through story-wise?

Buuuut the second-worst (recent) thing for Caius would be this:

A well known Daughter of Cacophony, Gretchen Pearl, had an exclusive, invite only show at a well-loved Elysium. She came in from Chicago; it was a huge deal and pretty much The Event to be at for any NOLA vampire. Caius managed to snag an invite by impressing her at his drag show, and Anyone who was Anyone was there. Gretchen was very kind, the performance was amazing, full stop, beautiful and incredible for everyone there, etc etc.

As Gretchen is singing her final song, Caius's sire sidles up to him, tells him, essentially, "I love you, kiddo, and I'm doing this for you" and rushes the stage, stabbing Gretchen in the chest with this super gnarly ritual dagger, before anyone can stop her. Then explosions go off, the venue caught fire, monsters appeared, it was a VERY BAD TIME. The fallout was also bad, and his reception in the clan? Baaaaaaaad. I loved it! Still dealing with aftershocks of the what's and whys of that event.

And bonus:

Pre-story it would be the death of his mother when he was 13, due to heart disease. They were extremely close and she was young when she had him. Afterwards he was shipped off to foster with her sister, who was a homophobic, abusive, religious extremist. Hooray 🎉

What’s a name you like that’s similar to yours? Anna, Joanna, Savannah.

Where did you get the last plate/bowl you ate with from? The last thing I ate was dinner last night and I had that on a paper plate.

How’s your mental health today? It’s okay so far. I’ve had a HELL of a couple months.

What bands and artists did you listen to when you were a teenager? Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, The Shins, Cake, No Doubt, Le Tigre, The Distillers, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Kill Hannah, mc chris. Plus lots more.

Do your feelings get hurt easily? They definitely can.

What sort of restaurant did you last eat at? This Asian-fusion bar for my sister’s birthday.

Do you have a friend who’s always sending you TikTok videos? Do you actually watch them? Yes and yes. Ellen and I send each other Tik Toks all the time.

Have you ever seen a cougar in the wild? Nope.

Will you attend a wedding in the next 3 months? Not that I’m aware of.

Are you good at following instructions? Yes, but a visual aid definitely helps.

What’s your backyard or outdoor area like? We have a decent sized lot for a Chicago apartment. There’s a driveway and a garage so that takes up half, but then on the side of the garage we have a patio that our landlord installed a little while after we moved in. There’s a garden next to it and we have a fire pit with chairs, a patio table and a couple of grills out there. We also hung cafe lights above that whole area. Then there’s a patch of grass and a veggie garden against the back of our building. It’s a really cool little cozy spot and I love that we have it.

Do you like your boss? (or your last boss if you don’t currently have one)? He’s a nice guy but he’s really spacey.

When was the last time you took a selfie? It’s been a bit.

What did you have for breakfast yesterday? A banana and an english muffin with peanut butter.

What do you do to entertain yourself on a long flight or journey? On a flight I just get wifi lol. On a car ride I’m usually the one driving so I have a playlist ready. I recently took a 19 hour train ride to NOLA and I had Bob’s Burgers and The Bear downloaded on my laptop so I watched that and I played cards with my dad and just looked out the window a lot too. Where are you right now? Work.

Have you ever done a hearing test? Yeah, we used to have them in grade school, along with vision tests.

Do you hate small talk? It can be awkward but it’s fine.

What’s the hottest temperature your current town/city has ever had? It’s definitely been over 110F here before.

What programs/applications do you currently have open on the device you’re using right now? This and stuff for work.

How many steps per day do you do, generally? Not enough.
