Leon: As for your notice in all of this, I can easily see through it. But what you are doing is evil. Be sure of this, I will send you to execution!

*Meanwhile, Marc is watching the life feed in his room with Juleka*

Marc: *Gripping his phone togther* I’m evil?! I’m Justice itself, you idiot! Those who stand in my way, including this guy, are evil!

Leon: All the world’s police forces are coming together for this investigation!

Marc: *Grabs the Death Note and begins writing ‘Leon N. Moreau’*

Juleka: Ain’t that something?

Marc: What an idiot. If he’d had just a little bit more of a brain, this could have been interesting.

Leon: The whole world is coming together, and we are certain to find you!

Marc: I’ll show what happens to those who go against Reverser to the whole world!

Juleka: Best counterattack ever!

Leon: We will see an end to your genocidal spree! We will restore society to… *He starts choking before eventually, he passes out right in the studio, dead*

Voice: Splendid. Reverser. Without laying a hand on someone directly, you’re still able to kill them. But, the man you have just killed… Leon N. Moreau… Was in fact a criminal scheduled for execution. This man’s arrest and his verdict were withheld from the media. Even someone like Kira could not have known of him, in other words.

Juleka: Hey! He got you good, huh?

Voice: But… N does exist.

Marc: … N…

N: Now, show us. Try and kill me if you can… Why do you hesitate?

*The audience members try to dissuade N from taunting Reverser*

Audience Membere: Is he sane?!/Hes going the die!/What is he thinking?!

N: Come…. Don’t be shy. Kill me. I know you’re there. You can’t do it, can you? Reverser. In other words, there are those who Reverser cannot kill. This is quite the valuable clue.

Juleka: Yeah, it’s a valuable clue.

N: I’ll tell you this in thanks for the clue. This broadcast just now was said to be worldwide, but… Actually, it was only broadcast in our lovely city of Paris. At staggered times, I intended to air it in other areas, but… There’s no need for that now, is there? Reverser, you’re in Paris

Marc: … No. Whoever this N guy is, by the time he finds me, hell will freeze over. He’s not going to stop me. Not him, not the police, and certainly not Ladybug and Chat Noir. *He scrolls through his photos until he comes across one of Nathaniel* Besides, everything I’m doing, I do it for him.

*Little did he know, Marc words were being mirrored just a few streets over in the bedroom of a certain redhead*

A Guide to the Father of Surrealism: Andre Breton

Considering the topics in my last post, The Two Basic Pillars of French Literature, it'd be best to start this excursion with Andre Breton, the man widely considered to be the father of surrealism. The idea of surrealism is pretty straightforward, but it gets tricky the longer you think about it. Ironically, that's the point.

Surrealism is acquired when one pushes away the rational thoughts and everyday logic that goes into making traditional art. Surrealism is dreamlike, bizarre, and often challenging to understand. Sometimes, it's even difficult to look at. By accessing the subconscious, Breton and his peers could create art that had never been seen before (other than the similar dadaist movement, but that was based more on goofy arrangements of rational imagery).

Breton used his ideas on surrealism and put them into two pivotal works of literature that defined his career: The Manifesto of Surrealism and Nadja.

Le Manifeste de Surrealisme

The Manifesto of Surrealism (1924) is Breton's most famous and widely renowned work. In it, he goes on to explain what exactly surrealism is. Breton was one of many to publish a manifesto on the subject matter. Many of his peers and rivals tried to coin the term and define the movement for themselves, but in 1924, Breton's manifesto became the generally more beloved guide. It would travel the world and be used by artists, writers, filmmakers, poets, and visionaries everywhere. Breton's words would even be included in works he inspired, such as being stamped in braille in Leon Ferrari's famous "Union Libre" pictured below.

Breton's definition of the movement would shortly become famous.

"Pure psychic automatism, by which an attempt is made to express—either verbally, in writing or in any other manner— the true functioning of thought. The dictation of thought, in the absence of all control by reason, excluding any aesthetic or moral preoccupation" (Academy of American Poets).

Discard all logic, and throw away the mindfulness you pay to your work. Surrealism is the logic of dreams, the strangeness in the human subconscious. A twentieth-century American surrealist writer would later simplify the idea to four words: Exterminate all rational thought. I'll let you guess the author.

Nadja

Breton would eventually take this philosophical art theory and apply it himself through literature. In 1928, he published Nadja, a strange novel about a girl. The protagonist rambles on about surrealism, gives a description of a ten-day love affair with a girl named Nadja, and realizes she's insane and that he cannot continue the relationship. Then he gives a detailed monologue lasting a quarter of the length of the novel on how her absence destroys and inspires him.

Nadja is a bizarre text. It's non-linear, borders as a sequel to his 1924 manifesto, and the density of the strangeness makes it a difficult read for most people; that means it did what Breton intended.

Breton can take the reader through his surreality through this dreamy, irrational writing pace. Surreality was considered the world where surrealism took place, eventually helping make surrealism into an ideology, not just an idea. Nadja was the first surrealist fictional work to be published. With it, forty-four images were added to the book to help create another layer of dreamy imagery.

And with that, I will end this post the same way Breton ended Nadja.

Afire [Roter Himmel] (2023)

Leon truly is the perfect asshole. Character studies of "bad" people can be interesting and rewarding, knotty in their morality. Christian Petzold's steaming dump of a film is a hollow and insulting version of that. Already griping from scene one when the car fails and doesn't convey him and his friend Felix fully to their retreat on Germany's Baltic Coast, things can only get worse when the pair realize that Felix' family summer home is doubly occupied. Stranger to them Nadja is mostly heard in initial scenes, loudly fucking someone someone through the night, much to Leon's chagrin. But maybe he should suffer. The writer is a recluse and elitist, turning down all social engagements because his "work doesn't allow it." But what does his work entail? Writing his latest opus, a novel entitled Club Sandwich which he guards jealously and won't allow anyone to read. Previously burned by Felix’ mother’s opinion on it, who he disregards because she is a cleaning lady, he similarly scorn’s Nadja’s negative e response when he eventually allows her to read it, claiming someone who works at an ice cream stand couldn’t “get” his work. But here’s the thing: German has some beautifully specific terms. Schadenfreude being one. When Leon’s publisher comes to discuss the manuscript and stays for dinner, it is revealed that Nadja is a literary scholar PhD candidate working a summer job. Helmut the editor respected her views even before he knew that, and praised Felix’ amateur photography. Both of these people have talent, and Helmut views them as worthy of empowerment. But for Leon, status is all that matters. Helmut has cancer but still works to better the lives others. Meanwhile Leon requires the literal death of his friend and Felix’ lover to be able to write something worth reading. It’s exploitive and sociopathic, suggesting no growth or change from within. Some stories are best left alone forever.

Vineri, cu patru zile înainte de alegerile prezidențiale din SUA, Statele Unite au înregistrat 100.000 de cazuri noi de Covid-19. Această cifră a înregistrat cea mai mare creștere a cazurilor de coronavirus într-o zi la nivel mondial.

În total, Statele Unite au suferit 9 milioane de cazuri de Covid-19 până vineri, sau aproape 3% din populație, cu aproape 229.000 de decese de la izbucnirea pandemiei de la începutul acestui an, potrivit unui raport Reuters, 31 octombrie, „&f2&” .

Autoritățile sanitare din SUA au confirmat vineri că 100.233 de persoane au fost testate pozitiv pentru Covid-19 în ultimele 24 de ore.

Numărul de vineri a stabilit cel mai mare record zilnic de Covid-19 din SUA pentru a cincea oară în 10 zile, depășind cel mai mare vârf zilnic de 91.248 de cazuri noi din ziua precedentă.

Raportul reprezintă, de asemenea, cel mai mare număr de victime zilnice din lume în timpul pandemiei, depășind vârful record al Indiei de 24 de ore în cazuri zilnice de 97.894 înregistrate în septembrie.
