The journey to The Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi’"You say that you are just a body, but inside of you is something greater than the Universe."AL Iman Al Safii .The Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi’i (Arabic: قبة الإمام الشافعي ) is a mausoleum dedicated to Imam Al-Shafi’i, one of the four Sunni Imams who founded the Shafi’i Sunni Islamic school of jurisprudence. Located at the Imam Shafi’i Street in the City of the Dead, Cairo, the mausoleum is a hallmark of Ayyubid style architecture and historical significance.Inside the mausoleum, some of the original details from the Ayyubid era include a wooden frieze along the walls and the wooden beams that would have supported lamps.[6] Additionally, Imam Shafi'i's cenotaph was added by Salah-al Din, founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. It was made by the woodworker Ubayd al-Najjar Ibn Ma’ali and is dated to 574 Hijra (1178 AD). The cenotaph is decorated with inscriptions in both Kufic and Naskhi script[6] containing Qur’anic verses, accounts of al-Shafi'i's life, and the woodworker’s name.[14] It is also decorated with panels of geometric ornamentation carved into the wood, featuring Ayubbid-style use of tessellations and geometric shapes.[6] One of the Arabic inscriptions on the cenotaph reads: "This cenotaph was made for the Imam al-Shafi'i by Ubayd the carpenter, known as Ibn ma'am, in the months of the year five hundred seventy four. When Metalsmiths Found Their Groove

"On a heavy incense burner made some 700 years ago, a laudatory inscription in Arabic encircles the name of the sultan. From a distance, the inlaid strokes of its naskhi script burst like golden sunrays. For a small pen case of about the same age, only a close-up view reveals a universe of intertwining inlaid designs where silver birds fly inside golden spheres. So opulent are such pieces that it is hard to believe the amount of precious metal in them is small. Mostly, they are made of a common metal alloy that, in the 12th century CE, metalsmiths in the Turco-Persian Seljuq world transformed into luxury ware. Today, it is as iconic of Islamic art as lavishly illustrated manuscripts or tilework tessellated with arabesques and geometry. ..."

The upper portion of the blade double-edged, a fuller extending halfway on each side of the back. The quillons (corroded at the ends) with conical tang and ovoid disc-shaped pommel. Cleaned and conserved condition.

2.📸 A Rare and Important German Knightly Sword with an Arabic Inscription from the Arsenal of Alexandria, circa 1370.

The hilt featuring a large oval ‘wheel’ pommel with prominent raised central bosses, each with an incised cross. A large tetrahedral button secures the pommel to the tang, which has been furnished with two later wooden grip-plates secured by two rivets. The arms of the iron cross-guard curve slightly downwards and widen to flattened spatulate tips. The broad double-edged blade ends in a rounded tip with very little taper along its length. A single fuller runs for approximately two-thirds of the total length on both faces, and within this, also on both faces, is a distinctive maker’s mark with traces of latten inlay. A single-line inscription in naskhi script is engraved within one of the fullers, beginning approximately half an inch from the forte and partially obscuring one of the maker’s marks.

Overall length: 113 cm (44.63"); Blade length: 87 cm (34.25"); Weight: 1.97 kg (4.34 pounds).

The pommel inlaid with a brass cross and a hexagram. The blade struck with the "running wolf" of Passau and traces of brass.

Double-edged blade with a narrow fuller on each side. Round quillons with slightly flared ends. Disc-shaped pommel.

Luster painted beaker, pear-shaped body and short cylindrical neck, deep flaring hollow foot, strap handle with button thumb rest. Decorated in light brown luster on an opaque white glazed ground with touches of blue glaze. Belly has four seated figures in elaborately embroidered robes, foliate cartouches between them, and a background of small scrolling motifs; inscriptional frieze in Persian naskhi script below, while symbols imitate Kufic script inside the rim. Muhammad ibn Abu Sahl al-Harawi (Iranian, active ca. 1200), artist, ca. 1200, Iran

This inkwell is inscribed with invocations petitioning God's graces for the owner. One reads: "With joy, divine grace, fortune, spiritual integrity, piety." The sentiment of the inscribed prayers is appropriate for this ceremonial inkwell, which was likely used for writing official acts of state.

DESCRIPTION

Calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, was elevated above all other art forms in the Islamic world because Allah (God), revealed the divine word of Islam to the Prophet Muhammad (570–632) in the Arabic language. This beautiful double page forms the opening pages, or unwan, of a Qur’an, the sacred book of Islam. Read from right to left, the verses are written in Arabic in elegant naskhi script on a gold ground with florets identifying the ends of the verses. Calligraphers who specialized in beautiful writing often dedicated their lives to copying the Qur’an to grow closer to Allah and receive his blessings. The pages are enhanced with splendid illumination—ornamentation in colors and gold with scrolling vines, blossoms, lozenges, and cartouches within bordered rectangles. Because the book arts were held in high esteem in the Islamic world, decorative motifs created by illuminators were often adopted in other art forms such as metalwork, textiles, and carpets.
