Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the state police after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and his accomplice Ghulam, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter in Jhansi on Thursday. He praised the officials during a meeting to review the law and order following the encounter. The police also gave him a report on this matter.
"After the encounter of former MP Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and his aide, CM Yogi Adityanath took a meeting on law and order. CM Yogi praised UP STF as well as DGP, Special DG law and order and the entire team," the UP Chief Minister's Office stated, as per news agency ANI.

Earlier, Special Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar informed: "Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and were carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were killed in an encounter with the UP STF team".
"The UP STF team was led by Deputy SP Navendu and Vimal. Sophisticated foreign-made weapons were recovered from the accused. Further details are awaited," the officer added.

New legal aid rules threaten access to justice for asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants, young lawyers warn
Young Legal Aid Lawyers urge Legal Cheek readers to back motion to block regulations
New rules that came into force on Monday 8 June threaten the sustainability of the asylum and immigration legal aid sector and access to justice for the most vulnerable.
Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL) has been working closely with the Shadow Legal Aid Minister, Karl Turner MP, to call on the government to withdraw the rules (Civil Legal Aid (Remuneration) (Amendment) (Coronavirus) Regulations 2020) and to consult with the sector before the new rules cause huge damage.
The sector is on its knees. Research by Refugee Action shows that there has been a 56% drop in the number of asylum and immigration legal aid providers since 2005.
The new legal aid rates will make it financially impossible for lawyers to take on complex immigration and asylum cases. The immigration bar is united in refusing to accept instructions under this new fee model as the changes pose an existential threat to the profession. The regulations set a new legal aid fee for asylum and immigration appeals. These fees have been brought in before a full consultation has taken place, and a full impact assessment has not been carried out.
The standard fixed fee for a case lodged through the courts new platform will be £627 for an asylum case, or £527 for a non-asylum case. The changes will make legally aided asylum and immigration work financially unviable and harm access to justice.
Firms will be less likely to do legally aided immigration cases, particularly those which are complex and demand more time, for people with complicated histories and vulnerabilities. There is too great a risk that they will not be paid for hours of time. The alternative would be to do the bare minimum on a case, for the firm to pay its bills and survive.
Those who are most vulnerable tend to have the most complex cases, such as victims of trafficking and LGBT+ asylum seekers. These are the people who will be denied access to justice by the new rules.
Secure your place: The UK Virtual Law Fair Series 2020
The changes will also have a serious impact on social mobility and diversity in the legal aid sector. If legal aid lawyers cannot earn a fair wage, then those without independent financial backing will not be able to enter or stay in the profession. This will create the invidious situation where there will not be lawyers that look and sound like the people we represent.
#APrayerForLegalAid
With YLAL’s support, the Official Opposition has tabled a fatal motion/prayer to strike down the new Statutory Instrument (SI) by way of an Early Day Motion (EDM 559). YLAL’s #APrayerForLegalAid campaign is a play on words as a prayer is the archaic parliamentary procedure by which the regulations can be blocked.
We urgently need MPs to add their names in support of the fatal motion/prayer. This could result in the SI being struck down before it does too much damage and could force the government to rethink its plans.
We have had a phenomenal response to our campaign so far, with hundreds of people tweeting their MPs calling upon them to support the fatal motion.
The campaign is working. Dozens of MPs have responded to these requests and have added their names. However, we need lots more MPs to add their support.
I have signed this EDM, thank you for getting in touch Rebecca
— Navendu Mishra MP (@NavPMishra) June 8, 2020
We call on all Legal Cheek readers to get behind this motion to defend access to justice. To find out how to get involved, see YLAL’s campaign page.
The more noise that we make, the greater chance we have of being heard and getting the government to rethink these damaging changes to legal aid. This is about the future of the profession and access to justice for those who need it most.
Young Legal Aid Lawyers is a group of lawyers that practise in areas of law that have traditionally been publicly funded. YLAL members include students, paralegals, trainee solicitors, pupil barristers and qualified junior lawyers across England and Wales. They campaign for a sustainable legal aid system which provides good quality legal help to those who could not otherwise afford to pay for it.
The post New legal aid rules threaten access to justice for asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants, young lawyers warn appeared first on Legal Cheek.

Labour MP Sharma says Corbyn will have to step down
Labour MP Virendra Sharma, who was elected for the fifth time from Ealing Southall and becomes the longest serving Indian-origin MP in the House of Commons, believes party leader Jeremy Corbyn will have to step down after its crushing defeat on Friday.Born in Jalandhar district, Sharma, 72, said Corbyn’s consistently ambiguous position on Brexit – ostensibly to appeal to both ‘leave EU’ and ‘remain in EU’ voters – contributed to the party’s loss. Unlike Corbyn, many candidates like him, he said, were clear: to remain in EU.“Corbyn was the centre of several factors that went against the party. Brexit was of course the main issue, but there were also sections of the India community opposing us for the stand on Kashmir. Many in the Jewish community also turned against us”, Sharma said.Eight Labour MPs of Indian origin were elected. Sharma was among sitting MPs who saw their winning margins and vote share come down. He attributed this more to the ‘national trend against the party’, and less to sections of the community campaigning against party candidates. But Sharma, a lifelong trade union activist and who began life in the UK as a bus conductor, is confident Labour will bounce back: “This is a temporary phase. I have seen the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and later. We will change our leader and reconnect with the public more”.According to him, it will be a challenge for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to get his EU withdrawal agreement through parliament, since there were many MPs within the ruling Conservative party and the opposition who prefer remaining in the EU.“Will he get support from all his MPs? The election result may help him portray it as another mandate for Brexit, but he will not be able to unite people like me who want to remain in the EU. In public perception, he is not exactly seen as an evolved politician”, Sharma added.Noting that he has been pressing British prime ministers David Cameron and Theresa May to issue an apology for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Sharma said he would reiterate the demand before Johnson when parliament convenes next week.On the possibility of a free trade deal with India favoured by Johnson, Sharma said that in trade negotiations, it is profit rather than emotion or goodwill that prevails. Both India and the UK will agree to it if it is of benefit to both sides.Sharma becomes the senior-most Indian origin MP in parliament after Keith Vaz, who was elected in 1987, stepped down. Sharma was first elected in 2007 and re-elected in subsequent elections in 2010, 2015 and 2017.Besides Sharma, Labour’s other Indian-origin MPs are Seema Malhotra, Lisa Nandy, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, Preet Kaur Gill, Valerie Vaz, Navendu Mishra and Nadia Whittome. Seven Conservative MPs of Indian heritage were also elected.
