GHOSTBUSTERS: GET REAL #1-4, ANNUAL 2015
2015
By Erik Burnham, Tom Bancroft, Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, Neil Uyetake, Erica Henderson, Evan Shaner, Joe Quinones, Chirs Uminga, Tom B. Long, Shawn Lee, Otis Frampton, Sara Richard, Sean Galloway, Drew Rausch, Matthew Dow Smith, Anthony Marques, Alex Deligiannis, Erik Evensen, Jeremiah Skipper, Ester Salguero, and Juanchoo
Tumblr media
When the "Real Ghostbusters" get transported to the "real" Ghostbusters' Earth, the two teams will start investigating how to put things back to normal, and stop the God known as Proteus from capturing them.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 9
This one was an amazing read. Once more I am amazed on the versatility of Dan Schoening. They man can draw in any style!
But apart from the visuals, the story contains easter eggs beyond just the "real ghostbusters".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to be fair. on that double splash page I had to read the wiki to figure out where some of those came from. But I was really surprised to see the Filmation Ghostbusters in the mix.
The story is simple enough, and fun. Now, I included the 2015 annual because, for some reason it tends to get bundled with this mini-series a lot. While it deals with the aftermath of "Get Real," it is not a continuation of the story.
The annual is a horror story (kind of), and it also introduced Samhain to the canon of the book.
Oh, and James Hong technically appears as the ghost from "Little trouble in Little China."

New Fiction 2022 - December
The Chimes at Midnight by Geoff Trowbridge (2008)
It takes its time to get to the meat until there’s more to chew on in the latter half. Most of these TOS alternate histories were mildly interesting but this one is a cut above.
A Gutted World by Keith R.A. DeCandido (2008)
"What if the Cardassians discovered the Bajoran Wormhole?" This is the question that got me reading all these Myriad Universes novellas in the first place, but because I’m me and a completionist, I couldn’t just skip past the others in the series to get here. I come to Star Trek expanded universe stuff with a DS9 first approach so I was keen to read how the author spun out this alternate history in which the Dominion gets their foothold in the alpha quadrant if they met the Cardassians first. It had a little too much TNG cast for my taste (especially since those characters dominate so many of these stories), but it’s a worthy DS9 tale.
Brave New World by Chris Roberson (2008)
Now we get to a whole lot of Data, so more of TNG. The courtroom stuff doesn’t hit the same way in these stories as it does in the TV episodes, and then all the implications of androids woven into the fabric of the galaxy is strangely not that compelling.
The Embrace of Cold Architects by David R. George III (2010)
Another Data-heavy story. I think these novellas introduce interesting directions with how the Federation will absolutely exploit artificial beings if they have the slightest excuse, but this particular one needed to be its own novel. It ends just as things get interesting.
The Tears of Eridanus by Steve Mollmann & Michael Schuster (2010)
A TOS story that deviates from the prime universe thousands of years before the era we know. It revels in an alternate history in which the Andorians made first contact with Earth, and the Vulcans and Romulans never parted ways.
The Last Generation by Andrew Steven Harris, Gordon Purcell, Bob Almond, Terry Pallot, Mario Boon, John Hunt, Robbie Robbins, Chris Mowry, Neil Uyetake, Andy Schmidt, Scott Dunbier, Justin Eisinger, Mariah Huehner, Bill Tortolini (2009)
I could’ve done without Data and the TNG cast at the center of things (again), but it’s cool to see Sulu flying around being a badass in his Excelsior ship. All these TNG tales feels like the higher-ups asking “Ey, where’s my TNG (money)? I gotta have my TNG (money)!”
Strange World dir. Don Hall (2022)
I loved it, but then I’m a sucker for perilous adventure tales across strange new lands.
Violent Night dir. Tommy Wirkola (2022)
Die Hard meets Home Alone with a blend of Bad Santa and maybe God of War?
Empire of Light dir. Sam Mendes (2022)
I was there for it all the way. Sometimes I remember I’m a normie-ass man but that part that feels like I’m a distant weirdo never goes away, and this movie’s for that guy.
Demon Wind dir. Charles Philip Moore (1990)
I watched this movie within a video game along with its MST3K-style commentary at 2 AM with my youngest brother and what a thing to do and write down.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio dir. Guillermo del Toro (2022)
I mean, of course it’s great. I haven’t read the original story and it sounds like this hews closer to that than the popular perception from Disney’s takes.
Babylon dir. Damien Chazelle (2022)
This could've been dry but instead it’s constantly running at full charge, and even when we slow down to the granular level of filmmaking commentary it’s still a high pressure romp.
Jack and Jill dir. Dennis Dugan (2011)
Eh, I suppose the most impressive thing here is that Sandler sells the idea that’s he's own twin sister to the point that you consider them separate people.
The Whale dir. Darren Aronofsky (2022)
This had the potential to be bleak but instead it’s just genuinely hopeful. The performances come across a little too staged, as does the whole movie I suppose, so it’s no surprise to learn than this was originally a stage play.
The Outer Limits - "The Sandkings" (1995)
Here we go! I’d been thinking about watching the entire 1995 reboot of The Outer Limits and it’s everything I could’ve hoped for. All the 90s actors I remember from Saturday afternoon sci-fi TV, dated effects and production techniques, stories about man’s reach exceeding his grasp. This first episode even features three generations of the Bridges acting clan. The thing about intelligent alien bugs isn’t so compelling, but the overall production makes up for it.
The Outer Limits - "Vanishing Act" (1996)
I was looking for an episode that features New Year’s Day and found this story about a man who time jumps forward by ten years every time he falls asleep. It’s a sci-fi sort of twist on It’s a Wonderful Life and very reminiscent of something you’d see on Star Trek.
Tales from the Crypt - "And All Through the House" (1989)
And since I plan to also watch Tales from the Crypt after TOL, I skipped over to this story about a bad Santa stalking a bad mom.
The Outer Limits - "Valerie 23" (1995)
Here’s a reminder not to fuck around with robots. Don’t do it! Especially not if they’re hot! There’ll more fucked up robot tales in the seasons ahead...
The Outer Limits - "Blood Brothers" (1995)
We get a few stories here about rich assholes trying to live forever. This one does also present an interesting idea: what if we could all be cured of all ailments and live twice as long in the process? What happens when no one’s dying and the population count explodes? In any case, that’s more thought than what goes into the episode’s story. It’s mostly about a rich guy jumping the gun on proper medical testing and getting screwed as he should.
The Outer Limits - "The Second Soul" (1995)
Oh man, I was definitely on the paranoid side of this story as the events unfold. It was nice to get one of these where it isn’t a bleak or worst case ending.
The Outer Limits - "White Light Fever" (1995)
Another rich asshole who literally wants to live forever. And that’s it. Spoiler: he doesn’t get to.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared - Series 2 (2022)
I wanna love this because I loved the original web series, but binging a bunch of TV-length episodes just felt like too much of it. I liked them when they were shorter and spaced out more. Binger beware, I know.

Transformers: Megatron Origin #04
Read Date: February 15, 2023 Cover Date: October 2007 ● Writer: Eric Holmes ● Art: Alex Milne ● Colorist: Josh Perez ◦ Mark Bristow ● Letterer: Neil Uyetake ● Editor: Andrew Steven Harris ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● after the raid on the, uh, energon sport facilities, the prison at Kaon is at 300% capacity ● Starscream going in to speak to a special council ● heheh, councilman: "I am required to list your charges as follows: assault, murder, armed robbery, destruction of state property, inciting civil disobedience, extortion, kidnapping, receiving and selling stolen goods, passing counterfeit funds, firing upon a state senator, multiple counts of attacks on state officers and state property, supplying known criminals with illegal weaponry, vehicle theft, and misrepresenting yourself as a state official." ● Starscream's response (ha!) :
Tumblr media
● Starscreams delivers a message to the council from the prisoners that they (the council) created this proble through their own interests. (I mean… he ain't wrong.) ● they start to take Starscream away but he brings out his arm cannons. Then they hear some loud noise, which Starscream says is "Phase Two for us. The end for you." ● Starscream: "Oh destiny, how it pleases you to caress a few and molest others. In the mines, we had no idea that destiny must be harnessed, kicked and ridden until it takes you in the right direction…" QUESTION: ….just what animals do Cybertronians ride??? The fact that Starscream makes such a poetic metaphor means that riding a living being is in their history… right? ● Megatron has a helluvan arm cannon now ● Kaon in total chaos ● those not under Megatron's command finally evacuate, and the Decepticons have a new name and a city under their control ● 👏👏👏
Synopsis: Having been arrested and detained by Sentinel Prime's Autobot security forces, Megatron's forces are in a tight squeeze, literally and metaphorically - their presence threatens to push the holding capacity of Kaon's Security Services Headquarters to the limit, and Starscream is marched away from the other imprisoned gladiators, seemingly to turn in his fellow rebels.
Starscream is taken before the Kaon Council to testify. As the assembled 'bots read out a list of charges, the Seeker remains flippant, raising the ire of the prosecutors, before finally offering his own two cents: everything that has happened is their fault. Raising his weapons, he and Soundwave easily destroy their would-be captors in a final coup de grace against the old order, and etch their symbol into the meeting room's view screen.
From their cells, the other prisoners hear the bloodshed, and Megatron is pleased: he'd deliberately engineered the entire arrest and Starscream's seeming defection in order to easily slaughter his assembled enemies. Starscream releases his leader and his gladiator crew, who are swiftly joined by every other criminal in the building. With Soundwave providing armaments and badges to the new recruits, Starscream introduces Megatron to the most devastating weapon in the precinct's armory: a new, arm-mounted fusion cannon. Blasting a hole in the wall with his new weapon, Megatron orders the group to attack with an offensive that is as simple as it is destructive: everything burns.
Aboard a pleasure vessel filled with Cybertron's upper class, snooty recreation comes to an end when Megatron's forces launch an attack. Though Thundercracker is uncertain, his partner Skywarp goads him into firing upon the leisure ship, causing it to crash into the city below in a fiery conflagration.
As Kaon burns, Sentinel and the other Autobots fight to retake the city from the insurgents, but it's an uphill fight all the way: the rebels have caused massive damaged, jammed communications with Iacon, and refuse to give an inch of ground. With his options running out, Sentinel realizes that he'll have to deploy the "Apex" as his final contingency plan, ordering his soldiers to hold the line while he falls back to retrieve it.
While Megatron and his troops lead the assault on Kaon, Soundwave meets with his boss, Senator Ratbat. The smug Senator admits that he was behind the disastrous chain of events that led to Megatron's rise to power: not only did he aid Megatron's cause by supplying arms, he was also the one who arranged for Megatron to be removed from the mining operation where he was originally working—and now that Megatron's forces have destabilized the area, the senator is embezzling what he can before moving on to new pastures. Soundwave, however, shoots his former boss, takes Ratbat's ill-gotten gains, and prepares to seal his spark inside a new frame…
As he struggles to get to the front lines, Megatron's advance is briefly halted by a colossal explosion: an explosion that was caused by Sentinel Prime, sealed inside a colossal suit of Apex Armor and ready to throw down with his opposite number. Another salvo of firepower throws the rebel leader off his feet. Believing his enemy dead, Sentinel radios to the other Autobots that he's created an opening in the enemy lines… but learns that he's spoken too soon when Megatron rises once more, using Hound's body as a bludgeon to shatter the helmet of the Apex Armor.
Their struggle takes them over a precipice as they battle while discussing Megatron's goal: Megatron will transform the world by tearing it all down, and Sentinel seeks to uphold the old order from any treachery. The two grapple until Megatron is almost knocked over a precipice; as Sentinel lifts him up to deliver the final strike, Megatron gains a second wind and launches a savage counterattack against the Autobot leader, mortally wounding him. Haivng finally made contact with Iacon, more Autobot reinforcements arrive… just in time to see their leader's broken body lying in a crater. Prowl, assuming command, orders a retreat.
As dawn breaks, Megatron takes stock of his latest victory and the journey that led him to this point. Having fashioned a throne from the remains of the Apex Armor, he discusses his next moves with Soundwave. Now that Kaon has been taken, the next step is clear—the rest of Cybertron shall be conquered. But they will not do it as Cybertronians. From this day forward, they are the Decepticons.
The Great War has begun…

Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century #3 is a fun deep dive into Detmer. We get to know the character a bit better. #comics #comicbooks #startrek #discovery
There are times in your life, where you are the only person people can turn to. In sports, they often glorify this as being born for the situation. I can’t count on my hands how many times I have heard this about the greats like Jordan and LeBron. The truth is  we all have a purpose. There are situations in life which causes each of us to step up. This is where your life experiences inform your…

GHOSTBUSTERS VOL. 2 #1-20
2013-2014
By Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, Andrew Harmon, Evan Shaner, Samuel Plata, Blair D. Shedd, Felipe Torrent, Ester Salguero, Erik Evensen and Neil Uyetake
Tumblr media
The original Ghostbusters disappear and it is up to a new team to fill up the void left by their absence.
But upon their return, things start acceleration into a conflict between two Sumerian deities that could require a human sacrifice... from the heart of the team.
SCORE: 8
While the quality of this volume is similar to the first one, I have to say that my level of engagement with it suffered from time to time, especially in the first half of it. And the only thing I can really point out for it, is that the original team stopped being together most of the time. One obvious reason was the marriage of Winston... an essential distraction for this story to work as a whole.
Some classic characters left out from the first volume, like Louis and Dana come back... but to me, who still hasn't read all the pre-volume one mini-series, the reasons for them being away are a bit mysterious. They do explain why they happened, but I felt like I was missing backstory with them.
Overall the story wasn't as consistent in engagement as the first volume, but it does provide some cool moments you will remember.
As for the art, there are a bit more guest artists in this volume, right around the time my interest was waning. At this point I think Dan Schoening is a must have for this book. His style may be cartoonish (as in editorial cartoons), but you get the idea immediately of who he is drawing.
Next stop for the Ghostbusters will be their crossover with the TMNT, which I already covered in this blog.
