Saxon: Metalhead (1999)
I'm not really a rock critic, I've just been moonlighting as one for 25 years ... sorry for the inconvenience.
But my formal (as in "paid") writing career began a quarter century ago, when I "auditioned" for the All-Music Guide (and passed, I guess) with a slew of Saxon reviews, including one for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal veterans' fourteenth album, the aptly named Metalhead.
So indulge me as I mark both anniversaries by revisiting and revising my opinions about a record that has aged much better than I remembered ...
Trends may come and trends may go, but heavy metal stalwarts Saxon carry on carrying on (as Spinal Tap would put it), year after year, label after label, line-up after line-up, through thick and thin, no matter what.
By the mid '90s, the resilient quintet led by frontman Biff Byford had overcome an unfortunate streak of bad business decisions and misguided artistic directions (basically, hair metal) to forge a respectable comeback, albeit primarily in Europe.
1999's Metalhead arrived in the midst of this comeback, and its title obviously references the earnest, pop-averse, patently "classic" heavy metal hallmarks that allowed Saxon to make this recovery, once they embraced their core strengths once again.
Led by Byford's instantly recognizable voice, the group completed by guitarists Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt, bassist Nibbs Carter, and new German drummer Fritz Randow (*) followed a token special effect intro with the bombastic but unsurprising title track.
So far, so familiar ...
But the ensuing, almost philosophical "Are We Travelers in Time" was one of Saxon's most compelling efforts of the decade, and by the time they reached an epic, eight-minute finale with the equally atmospheric "Sea of Life," they had surprised many a jaded acolyte.
Mind you, the journey between points A and B aren't always as distinguished; in fact, the best I can say about workmanlike head-bangers like "What Goes Around," "Song of Evil," and "Piss Off" is that Saxon had previously sleepwalked through much worse.
And Metalhead yielded two fantastic thrash-outs in the self-explanatory "All Guns Blazing" and "Conquistador -- even if the latter is basically a re-write of "Crusader" in double time and with Spanish guitars, it's nevertheless amazing: quintessential Saxon.
In my original review, I concluded that clearly none of this was groundbreaking stuff and it had little hope of luring younger fans to Saxon's cause, but at least the old metal warriors appeared to be having fun again and no longer trying to be something they're not.
What else could a Metalhead ask for?
* The talented, well-traveled Randow began his career with cult '70s proggies Eloy and Teutonic Southern rockers (yep, that's a thing) Epitaph, before joining quotidian '80s metal band Victory, and, in the '90s, rather cheesy Judas Priest disciples Sinner.
More Saxon: Saxon, Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather, The Eagle has Landed, Power and the Glory, Crusader, Innocence is No Excuse, Back On the Streets 12”, Rock the Nations, Destiny, Forever Free, Dogs of War, Killing Ground, Lionheart, The Inner Sanctum, Into the Labyrinth, Call to Arms, Sacrifice, Battering Ram, Thunderbolt, Hell, Fire and Damnation.

SAXON - Hell, Fire And Damnation
Tumblr media
Arch !

Friday, April 22: Saxon, “Running for the Border”
Coming after 5 consistently enjoyable records that righted the ship for Saxon, Killing Ground was a bit of a disappointment.  There was nothing really wrong with the record per se, as it maintained the sound and approach the band settled on a decade prior, but the flipside to delivering with such consistency over an extended run was that even a slight dip in quality would be noticeable and color perceptions.  And there was indeed a slight dip in quality, as the frequency of the band’s output (a new record every couple years) was bound to lead to wearout. But the key word here was slight, since Killing Ground still had plenty to offer: “Running for the Border” was a swaggering rocker that merged the grooving biker metal of Saxon’s early days with their more recent penchant for power metal, and Biff Byford’s ageless whine remained charming and uniquely his own. This was the sort of track one could imagine Saxon jamming through together in a rehearsal room, and the warm production enhanced that feeling despite being perfectly balanced.  It wasn’t necessarily great that “Running for the Border” was exactly what Saxon had offered in the past and nothing more, but then again, it couldn’t have possibly come from anyone else.

- https://is.gd/ISDNOc
