Sightseeing in Reykjavik (day 1)

Saturday 8th June 2024 - Reykjavik (2nd post)

First stop from our hotel was Rainbow Street’ quite nearby (Skolavordustigur – a bit of a mouthful!) and a first view of the iconic church, Hallgrimskirkja, completed in 1986.

It was a chilly but thankfully dry day and Sally & I both indulged in some local street food from the ‘famous’ (apparently) Hot Dog Stand near the main square before visiting the impressive ‘Harpa’ Concert Hall & Conference Centre (2011).

Close to the fishing harbour, I spotted the French luxury cruise ship, Le Bellot.

Built in 2020, she’s just 9,900 tons and carries about 180 passengers.

Further along the sea-front, there was this ‘Sun Voyager’ sculpture by Jon Gunnar Arnason (1990).

Meanwhile, at the main cruise terminal in the distance was the much bigger Holland America Line ship Nieuw Statendam, also built in 2020 but 99,900tons and over 2,650 passengers!

We finished up back at the Hallgrimskirkja, where the rather plain interior comes as something of a surprising contrast to its dramatic exterior. Commissioned in 1937, construction on the church, with its 244ft high tower, didn’t start until 1945 but it wasn’t finished until 1986.

At the time, it proved a bit controversial but has become an iconic landmark of Reykjavik. There’s a statue outside of Leif Eriksson (970-1020ad) – the Norse Viking explorer who is believed by many to have set foot on North American soil 500 years before Columbus ‘discovered’ it!

Having more than achieved our 10,000 steps for the day, there was time for Hot Chocolate and Waffles before returning to our hotel for a ‘nanny nap’ before dinner!

De Diergaardesingel met onder andere hotel Statendam en restaurant Bali, 1975-1977.

Deze singel is vernoemd naar de in 1857 opgerichte Rotterdamsche Diergaarde, waarlangs deze singel liep. De Diergaarde werd eind 1939 gesloten in verband met de bouw van een nieuwe diergaarde in de wijk Blijdorp. Daarna werd met de sloop begonnen; het restant van de diergaarde werd verwoest bij het bombardement in mei 1940. Zowel de Stationssingel als de Spoorsingel hebben in de 19de eeuw enige tijd Diergaardesingel geheten.

An evening aboard one of Holland America’s cruise ships is a luxury affair by any standards, but it can be made even more luxurious with elegant experiences at Club Orange or the Pinnacle Grill. The Holland America cruise line is known for its excellent food and superb service, and Club Orange allows guests to enjoy even more…

That’s a keel....

The first piece, the keel, of the soon-to-be luxurious Holland America Line (HAL) cruise ship, MS Nieuw Statendam, was lifted into position in the building dock recently.

Almost 100,000 tons of magnificent ship will rise from here....

The ship is being built in Italy....and is scheduled to be carrying passengers across the Atlantic Ocean by the end of 2018.

When complete, Nieuw Statendam will look like this....

The ship will offer 2,650 passengers one of the finest experiences at sea....for a very reasonable price. (Roughly -- USD $600/day for a couple....USD $400/day for a single....when I average what I paid for travel on other HAL ships....over multiple cruises in recent years.)

Truth be told, Holland America Line is among my favorite cruise lines (along with Cunard Line). 

Since retiring from the U.S. Navy, I’ve spent nearly 250 days aboard nine of the line’s ships (which number 14, at the moment)....sailing all over the world.

They give you an all-around superb experience for your money!

I plan to do a whole lot more cruising....and MS Nieuw Statendam will be one of those ships gently carrying me to faraway places.

Holland America Nieuw Statendam Cruise Ship Tour and First Impressions 2019

De Wilhelminakade met het schip s.s. Statendam van de Holland-Amerika Lijn, 1929.

Het s.s. Statendam was een cruiseschip van de Holland-Amerika Lijn (HAL) en het derde schip met die naam van de maatschappij. Toen het schip gereed was, werd het beschouwd als het modernste schip in zijn tijd. Het heeft dienstgedaan van 1929 tot en met 1940 en voer op en neer tussen Rotterdam en New York. Onderweg werden Boulogne-sur-Mer en Southampton aangedaan. Vanaf 1930 werden 's winters ook cruises gemaakt in de Caraïbische Zee.

De Statendam III werd in Belfast gebouwd op de werf van Harland & Wolff. In september 1924 werd hij te water gelaten, waarna de werkzaamheden twee jaar lang onderbroken werden. In april 1927 kreeg de HAL een staatslening van de Nederlandse overheid, waarna het schip naar Schiedam werd gesleept. Op scheepswerf Wilton werd het schip afgebouwd.

Op 11 april 1929 begon de eerste reis naar New York. De laatste reis vertrok op 24 november 1939 uit New York. Tijdens de Meidagen in 1940 lag de Statendam III afgemeerd op Rotterdam-Zuid aan de Wilhelminakade. Zodoende viel het schip reeds de eerste oorlogsdag in Duitse handen. De Duitsers plaatsten een mitrailleur aan boord om vuur uit te kunnen brengen op de Nederlandse verdedigers aan de andere oever van de Nieuwe Maas, die op hun beurt het vuur beantwoordden. Tijdens deze gevechten brak in de middag van 11 mei brand uit aan boord van de Statendam. Blussen bleek door de oorlogshandelingen onmogelijk en in de volgende dagen brandde de Statendam geheel uit. De verwoeste Statendam III werd in augustus 1940 gesloopt.

Vijf schepen van de Holland-Amerika Lijn hebben de naam Statendam gekregen.

De eerste Statendam voer voor de HAL van 1898 tot 1910.

De tweede Statendam werd als cruiseschip gebouwd, maar voordat het klaar was brak de Eerste Wereldoorlog uit. Het werd in 1915 verkocht aan de Engelse regering, grijs geverfd en voor troepentransport ingericht. Het schip kreeg de naam S.S. Justicia. De Justicia werd op 19 en 20 juli 1918 door UB-64 en UB-124 zes keer getorpedeerd waarna hij zonk.

De vierde Statendam werd voor de HAL gebouwd in 1957. In 1982 werd het schip aan de Paquetgroep verkocht en kreeg het de naam Rhapsody.

De vijfde Statendam voer van 1992 tot 2015 onder die naam. De thuishaven was Rotterdam.
