William Eggleston
William Eggleston is an American photographer, who was well known for his colour photography. The book I will be talking about is called 'before colour' (2010)  which was shot in Memphis where he was born.
Tumblr media
This particular image I have chosen was a image of a telephone box. I picked this image, because this object is known around the world and it is still around but not used as much, as it may have been used during Eggleston’s time. Eggleston image is a square format, which I thought was more effective as it focuses on the telephone box, and drawings the viewers eye towards the telephone box and look more closely at the details within the object. Even though the image is in black and white we can see that telephone box stands out from the image, because the box is lighter in tones compared to the background. The telephone represents connection to others; the phone has been useful to talk to other or get information across, but in the image there is no one to use the phone. This could suggest that there were no need for them as mobile phone started to because more available. It could be possible that Eggleston came across the telephone box and decide to take a snapshot of the everyday objects. The rubbish left in the box, suggests that the object is not cared for anymore and is just another place to throw their litter. However at the same time it gives us a sense that people has past, or even used the telephone box.
Eggleston’s photographs create a visual narrative, which gives us a sense of his world. David Hickey (2010, p8) states ‘Eggleston created the primary strategies, out of which the “snapshot aesthetic” would arise, but with this caveat.’ This implies he does take caution in what he takes a picture of, but does not necessary mean that he will take time to compose and frame his images. This may imply why he made the background slightly blurry, and wants us to focus on the telephone box. As it is a “snapshot”,David Hickey (2010, p8) expresses that ‘He makes “bad” pictures of bad places. He abandons composition of the world with no composure.’  This quote suggests that this is his way of documenting, and not all images look good, or have to look aesthetically pleasing.

As students, we arrive on campus with a destination in mind. We carry our bags, knowing we can put them down elsewhere once we get there. Lecturers and staff also have offices for themselves, but what about the cleaners? Have you ever wondered where the cleaners would put their bags down after arriving at work?
An adjacent door inside one of the washrooms will lead you to— not Narnia, unfortunately— a room with multiple brooms, tissue rolls, boxes, a single plastic chair with no back, something here, something there and… a rack full of refreshments with shoes at the bottom?
It looks messy and out of place but very much real. The cleaners have a room for themselves depending on where they’ve been tasked to take care of. In this instance, this room belongs to the kakak cleaners of the cafeteria, where they can put their bags and treats safely. They don’t stay much in the room, though, since the hustle and bustle of the cafeteria are constantly demanding their attention.
The door may be ajar sometimes, but no peeking and trespassing! (We see you eyeing that pack of milo.)

Photography: WEPA! Williamsburg, Brooklyn 4/11/24
Last week, I was heading to Brooklyn Bowl to catch Marco Benevento with JOVM mainstay act Ghost Funk Orchestra. I decided to take the train into Long Island City and transfer to a Downtown Brooklyn-bound B62 which runs along Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg — with a stop at North 11th Street and Driggs Avenue. As I was walking the couple of blocks to Brooklyn Bowl, I came across the scene above.…

Larawang Sanaysay
