Patch Nov 11th

It's been a hot second since the last patch! This one's mostly little fixes and comment resolutions.

Cantrips are now considered to take up 1 space in a Runebook. Previously it was undefined, now keeping Cantrips in a Runebook is actively inefficient.

Biotic Recharge now does not pay out stamina when you get hit in a Ward.

Added an exception to the Pin and Shield martial arts so you can't perform a Knockout or Execution on the same turn that you begin the Pin or Shield, to prevent one-turn KOs. This is kinda klugey and I'd like to add a more elegant solution later.

Changed the SRAD to target Resistance.

Changed the Control Burner to hit all targets in a line, while removing its +1 to attack.

Changed the wording on the Sniping tag to reduce confusion with another keyword

Specified what happens when you try to use the Stealth Takedown with no ranks in Stealth (you need to be adjacent).

Added the Agile property to the Duelling Poncho to align it more with the Found Cloth

Specified that pulling someone with the Leash spell is a Move action, and how much you move when you do that

Specified that **Portal **is 1 tile wide

Exempted attacks with Aura, Cone and Audio range from the effects of Smoke Grenades

Changed the Irostatic Capacitor's Overclock effect from +1 duration to +1 radius, because the Overclock effect kinda did nothing

Specified that Blend In only gives you one free language

Haemophagy's Enthrall was missing a stamina cost. Oops

The Range Tables in Appendix B were still referencing old Sniper Training

Changed Knight's Vow so that dropping it when it's not your turn is a Reaction, because that's potentially relevant

Added the Armoured keyword to the SPQR Rubicon and Vicimus.

Changed pegasus' Stormwalker ability from Body + Acrobatics to Body + Fitness in line with other weather modification abilities

Cost of the Gym lifestyle upgrade cut from 5 to 3, because it's the same price it was back in 0.2 when skills were more expensive

Slight mistake on the Rocket ammo type where the columns were misaligned

Changed wording on Burning Storm to be clearer that the ball of fire slows down temporarily when it hits someone

So, quick aside!

This story arc is over - Sunjackers Volumes 1-3 - but I'm not finished with this world, or these characters. I love these doofy little babies too much to abandon them. They just need something new to tackle, rather than the scrambled together story I improvised out of whatever bits and pieces I had lying around after a year of just throwing stuff at the wall. Nighthaze is also not going anywhere. However, that will be at some point in the future - in the short term I need a break from this world, and I'm going to spend some time focussing on other projects. You'll be hearing more about those very soon, at most I'll need like, a month to six weeks to get that prepared.

Also, I can't let it be unsaid: the internet is kinda undergoing some... instability right now? Tumblr included. Know that I have not rushed the ending here to move on with dealing with that - I've had this ending in mind for years now, it's just fortuitous timing that's let me stop this particular ride just as it's getting rough. That said, the break will give me the time I need to assess the situation patiently, without also trying to keep a comic updated at the same time.

One of the things I will be trying to jump on during the intermission will be the print edition so keep your eyes peeled for that - but also brace for a roughly 70 page book, so it's going to be more expensive than the other two. I also need to reform my shipping pricing on Etsy because shipping has gotten so much more expensive in the last two years. Given the up-front expense of printing I'm considering running an Indiegogo for it instead of doing Etsy pre-orders, what do people think about that?

Anyway. Boy howdy. This is kind of surreal. Finishing my second comic, and the first one I've managed to make a living off of. Being a full-time webcomic artist was like, one of my childhood dream jobs and here I am. I'm gonna sit down with a nice cup of tea and uh... try to have a normal one.

January Project - 2024 Pitch

My First 3D modeling project was a model done for a 3D modeling class called "Intro to 3D modeling" which was the room of a tabletop character I was playing as at the time. Aichmir was a Child-like car tinkerer who uses her passion for cars to help her cope with the world falling apart around her. The room and system was Captain Horse's @nighthazerpg based on @askthesunjackers. Thus the world will be referencing the world of Sunjackers and Nighthaze directly. Here were the original renders for the original project:

The current renders are quiet simplistic and lack several elements that I have learned since making the model, and wanted to start the new year off working on the 3D models.

The file project will be a scene in maya, I am basing the model off of a lot of buildings in Chicago which have a lower floor dug into the ground. It will include an exterior and an inside space. The full project will be a complete model of the apartment, including the garage/aichmir's room, a living room, and a bedroom for another character/roommate. Here are some of the completed props:

I want you...r character sheets!

It's been a hot minute since I last sent out a Nighthaze feedback form and while development has slowed down as I've been working on other things. In this new feedback form I want to see as many real, actually-played character sheets so I can try and aggregate as much data as possible about the decisions you guys are making with the game. I've also included a space for you to input toy builds - sheets you've made without the context of a campaign. This questionnaire should be a little shorter than the previous forms, it's just a case of digging up links! There's also space for comment, some 1-5 scale questions, etc. I'd appreciate it if you took ten minutes to help me make Nighthaze the best it can be!

The Vampire And The Mage

As she got herself ready for her little coffee date, Astrea didn’t stop talking to herself and Nighthaze. The baby flying fox watched from her bed sheets. 

“Maybe it won’t be bad. It’ll be fine,” she nervously drawled, making eye contact with her familiar, “Maybe he’ll be nice. Maybe he'll be kind. May-,” she faltered as she pulled her curls and the few dread locs into a ponytail. 

The only response from Nighthaze was his chittering. 

Astrea nodded, “You’re right. He’s going to be like the rest. What am I thinking he’ll be nice?”

She tossed a pile of outfits next to Nighthaze. 

“What do you think, little buddy? What should I wear to impress this Ivan?”

She separated the shirts, looking across the colorful fabric. She picked out a nice corset blouse and a lace up skirt. Nighthaze squeaked his approval. She threw on the first earrings and necklaces she found, tossed a notebook into a bookbag along with a pencil and headed out the door. The baby flying fox slipped out ahead of her. 

Not having any more distractions, the fear of being outside her room set in. There were a few times -on her way down to the cafe- that she’d come close to turning back. But if this didn’t happen, she’d get in trouble. Probably. Most likely. 

So she took a deep breath despite a pounding heart and sinking stomach. And took a seat out on the patio of Lavender’s. She glanced over her shoulder every few minutes. Realizing the anxiety of possibly seeing a certain three warlocks was becoming overwhelming, she pulled that notebook out and began scribbling down notes. 

Ivan stood tall over the ginger haired barista as he ordered a medium hot cocoa. He tucked one -of a few strands of silver hair framing his face- behind his ear. 

He gave the shop a quick glance, looking for the small elven warlock he was engaged to now. His red eyes locked onto the dark golden curls, anxious eyes and small frame. He pointed to the young elf and said to the barista, 

“I’m also with her.”

The cheery red head just nodded and he strolled to the back doors. He came to the table she was writing at.

“Hello. Astrea, if I’m not mistaken?”

She smiled up at him, setting her pencil down. 

“That’s me,” she said, voice wobbling, “Astrea.”

She closed the notebook around the pencil. 

As she tried to resist the urge to make herself smaller or even keep looking over her shoulder, she set the notebook down in her bag. Leaning back, she took her new fiance in. White hair, red eyes she knew were under his preferred sunglasses. A tee shirt and jeans. Very tall. 6′ 2″ if she had to guess. 

Nighthaze crawled out from under her curls. He chattered at the tall vampire, tilting his head. 

Ivan sat down, his eyes trained on her. 

“I’m Ivan.”

He didn’t take the shades off, preferring them. His red eyes were infamous, the only part of him people recognized. 

Looking down at the bat with curiousity, he tilted his head. 

“Your familiar?,” he asked, “I didn’t know warlocks had them. Isn’t it a fae tradition?”

“Yeah,” she nodded, “It is.”

She cupped her hand under the baby flying fox’s head. He took the invitation and crawled into her hand. 

“My grandpa and uncle both hold rank in the Seelie Court in the Fey Wild.”

She glanced around, trying to make it seem like a casual taking in surroundings. 

“This is Nighthaze. I found him in a cave.”

“I assume he’s always with you?”

He paused as the waitress dropped off his hot cocoa, looked the elf up and down. She was a terrible actress. Or he had just mastered reading people. She was tense and constantly took in their surroundings. After a few beats of watching the fear, he leaned forward over the litle table and whispered,

“Don’t worry. I have guards all over campus. You can relax.”

He leaned back in his iron seat,

“I promise I won’t touch you without your consent.”

When she barely eased, it became clear to him. For once, he was not the thing she was scared of. So softly he added, 

“And no one else will either. That’s a promise.”

She smiled a little then. It made her look peaceful. But then his red eyes hidden by his shades flicked to her teal ones. She was feeling anything but peace. It was a warzone back there behind those pretty eyes. 

But she said, “Thank you for that. You’re very tall and imposing.”

Ivan paused, the heavy cup in his pale hand right against his lips. He set it down, glancing down at his own body. And then he scanned Astrea from top to bottom, taking his time. He allowed himself to imagine her standing beside him. 

“You’re dainty. My mother is six feet tall. Father is six foot six. It’s their fault I’m so tall.”

“Well compared to the Antanov’s, the Gyo’s are a bunch of short stacks. Aside from my brother.”

Despite the storm inside, Astrea giggled a little to herself. Dainty. That reminded her of something those three had called her in that cave. 

She plowed past those particular feelings with, 

“What’s your favorite sweet?”

Because as scared as she was to be outside of her room, this arrangement with Ivan Antanov was important to mother. She couldn’t mess this up by acting too strange. Mother would be angry. And she didn't want that right now. For that reason, she continued to remind herself to smile. Look sweet and happy so he won’t walk away. 

Ivan sipped his hot cocoa. 

He had spent enough time with ministers and people who were masters at manipulating their own emotions. He knew a forced laugh when he saw one. Every thing the little fox had done so far had been forced. Everything had looked and sounded uncomfortable. 

He made a note of that.

“I hate sweets,” he stated with a smile. 

“So that’s not hot cocoa I smell from your cup? Or is it specifically sweet drinks that you like?”

“You’re correct. It’s hot cocoa. I like warm sweets.” 

He took a leisurely sip, “If we’re talking about a candy bar, I wouldn’t eat it.”

He set the empty cup down before folding his arms and across his chest. He leaned back, against the iron of the seat, knees parted. 

“Shall we get to business then?”

When Astrea nodded, hiding nerves under a smile and small nod. 

“If this engagement is going to work I’m going to need you to stop hiding.”

“I’m not hiding. I’m sitting right in front of you.”

He chuckled, “I think you know what I’m saying, little fox. Stop masking your emotions for the sake of our families.”

‘your family’ was what he didn’t say. 

He continued on, “I need this engagement to happen. Therefore, your thoughts and feelings about it won’t scare me off.”

She practically froze. And then admitted defeat,

“Well-”
