Notes: This contains spoilers for the main story. Takes place after the event but before they leave. First BoF fanfiction, not the last. Some tags: Whumptober, Whumptober2022, Gen, Story Spoilers. Whumptober day one: This wasn’t supposed to happen.

Nina had no time to weep over the decision her dear little sister had made while her heart felt like a sword had been plunged through it. Nina was the one with the cursed black wings, she was the one ostracized and sent away from her home town of Wyndia, denied her title of princess by the guards and her parents.

Even if their parents revealed their love all along, those wounds would take time and effort to heal(pained as she was, the young woman still held love in her heart for them but it would take time and effort for things to be anything close to good between them again). But her sister, her dear Mina, who believed in her all along, never denied her existence and tried to make it so Nina could return, would never be the same again.

Because of her ancestor unintentionally cursing the Wing Clan out of love for another outside of it, Mina would never get to be a human again. Nina could not be mad at her namesake, however. She had fallen hard and fast for a Dragon Clansman herself and it was Mina’s sacrifice that would allow her to help on the journey they were on.

Mina’s words of encouragement and support repeated over and over, each word a jab to her being. ‘It was never meant to be this way, Mina,’ Nina’s wings folded at her back while she was alone in the groups shared room in the castle still. She could not bring herself to be any kind of at ease now. With the young woman getting ready herself, the others had split up to prepare for their flight to Evrai- to continue the investigation of St. Eva and the churches, to rescue Rand’s abducted mother, Daisy, to save countless lives in the world and the world itself, it seemed.

Things had become increasingly dangerous and complicated in a short amount of time.

‘I didn’t know anything!’

Mina had sounded so, so upset from it; mad at herself for not knowing Nina’s own painful burden and at the curse for separating them so long. Nina had suspected their parents continued keeping her sheltered inside the castle, but to not know of the curse that even the children of Wyndia spoke of so casually was to the extent she did not expect. Not as though Nina had ever told her directly either, figuring that conversation was one best left for the King and Queen to explain.

Nina tried to keep her thoughts in order but unable to keep them from replaying that event over and over, hearing her little sisters voice and her own pounding on the sealed shut doors while she shouted until her throat ached for Mina to open them, to stop the ceremony. To not make a grand sacrifice so young. One that was not reversible.

Mina’s wings were not black. Nina’s hands still ached from how they bled hitting those stone doors.

Her legs had nearly gave way under her when the doors finally opened. Opened when it was over and too late. There, Mina stood having turned into a beautiful, majestic bird with feathers of purple, pink and white.

‘I’ll always remember you, Nina, even if I can never be human again!’

The voice of the memory came close to bringing her to tears, the room spun, her grief keeping her frozen on the spot for a time that lasted too long. Sweet Mina, all too determined to help in her own way to support Nina. Mina saw strength Nina did not, saw use in her dark magic and abilities that would aid in their journey.

Mina that was more sneaky than Nina had given her credit for. The girl was light on her feet, leaving Nina to forget at too crucial a time that her sister could be stealthy, having a sway with some of the kinder guards that would accompany her when she would sneak out of the castle, like she had not all that long ago back in HomeTown and ended up hiring Ryu and Bow to get her precious pet pig Suzy back.

“...Nina.”

“I’m ready, Ryu.” Nina answered after a small pause, grounding herself again. Ryu had spoken her name with a concerned kindness, the rest of it going without saying out loud. If he was back alone, then they were ready and waiting outside. Outside with the transformed Mina.

Her emotions a swirl still, the winged-woman able to keep it steady. Above all else, she was determined. “I cannot allow Mina’s selfless act to be in vain,” Nina said pointedly, turning to face Ryu. His face showed understanding as he nodded, his green eyes easy for her to read in that moment. He stood waiting for her to join him before they continued to meet the rest of their friends.

Rand had offered her earlier to cast Cure on her hands since her own magic was only on the offensive side of it. She had turned him down then, but heading out of the castle doors, Nina would ask him about it, needing to be in her best form. Their mother and father had already bid their goodbyes not long ago, and if Nina could see her mother holding strong while in public. Something long since honed as her days of royalty and dealing with their people. Her tears would be shed once they were gone and the couple were in the privacy of their room. Their father was recovering, not able to give as proper a goodbye and knowing his youngest had done such a thing to help had certainly not done his health any favors. Had he still been as sick as he was, the event could have killed him, Nina was certain.

The sunlight of the morning hit the pair as they approached the rest of the group exchanging encouraging words with one another.

Upon seeing Nina, Mina spread her wings with a loud, excited caw, eager to take them to Evrai, to do something to support Nina after learning the terrible truth of it all. Nina was sure Mina was agreeing with the others and their determination to get going and put a stop to things.

‘I will not let you down, Mina.’

“Plenty of good matches tonight, don’t you think?” Says Nina as she observes all the dancing couples. Meanwhile, this winged princess has no one to dance with, but was too shy to really ask anyone, and so she observes from off to the side. (for anyone you feel the muse for best!)

"Depending on how you look at it." Britany-Adelaida’s ever loose lips began running again. Sometimes it was hard to tell if she was a gossip girl, or if she was just an idiot that liked talking too much.

“Many of the people here aren’t actually couples, their just looking for their latest interest for the night, a temporary interest. Like him, you see that blonde man over there, with the ribbon tie?” Marchioness Marsh leaned a little closer to Nina, pointing at a blonde haired, yellow eyes man. “That man recently broke the heart of a foreign Viscountess, & is looking for his latest fling. There are plenty of men here like him, you must be careful who you show interest in, ma’dam.”

PLAYING: Breath of Fire IV

I’m losing steam, but the game has barely begun...I think..

Last we left off, Nina was insisting we travel to Wyndia to speak to the wind dragon. Cray’s mother tells of a short cut through some ruins (I think). We get to the other side and we have to navigate a swamp filled with anacondas. They’re not violent. They’re part of puzzle. Every time you step on a squeaky board, the snakes move. They can be walked on to reach other areas of the map. It’s a clever puzzle, but executed annoyingly. When they move, it takes about 5 seconds, and you cannot move while they are. The squeaky steps are unavoidable. So most of the time was spent re-rotating snakes into the right position. Clever, but annoying.

We get to Wynida and the king is happy to see his princess. He’s a good man that values what Nina and Cray were trying to do. They all feel pretty confident that the Empire was trying to catch Ryu to use his power as a weapon. The king of Wyndia agrees that summoning the wind dragon is the right choice--so sends us into the bowels of Wyndia keep to find a harp.

I love the look of Wyndia--it’s a cool design with great textures. But like the other areas of the game, it’s very claustrophobic. I wonder if this was necessary due to hardware constraints?

Finding the flute involved tunnels that blow the player back with wind. It was fucking annoying. I actually took nearly a week pause on the game cause I didn’t want to deal with the wind. After getting the flute, we have to travel to a tower to speak with the dragon (freaking JRRPGs...is nothing easy?).

Once again, I took a break. The puzzle of the tunnel looked annoying. The wind occasionally blows upward. You have to time jumping to either ride the wind up or avoid the wind to drop down. It wasn’t so bad...but I’m starting to feel jerked-around.

At the top, we’re cutoff by the bald guy from Ludia. He had sent Scias to spy on us, and now he’s here to stop us. BOSS fight! Scias decides that we’re a noble group, and he’s impressed that we’ll sacrifice ourselves for others. He shows up and helps fight off the Ludian dude, to the bald man’s surprise.

After the boss fight, we use what looks like a windmill to sling shot a people holding basket that sprouts glider wings, allowing it float in the sky. Kinda fun. We then talk to the Wind Dragon. It recognizes Ryu as a dragon, but only part of one. Dragons are immortal and all powerful, but they don’t have much of a will of their own: neither good or bad. Instead, they tend to do as their summoner’s command.

And then...well, I don’t know. It’s been a week since I played and I don’t remember what I’m supposed to do next. I’m having a hard time keeping committed, but I really want to finish it.

I’m taking the fairy village more serious this time. Playing the minigame, I kind of wish there was a mobile game like this. I like the simple sim quality, and it’s about growing the town and surviving, not fighting. Maybe I’ll make my own mobile version ;p

Top 10 Princesses!

((Well, today’s National Women’s Day. I guess I’ll help celebrate it with a Top 10. Yeah, that’s the main reason why I’m doing this. Although I won’t do another top 10 female characters list yet (and when I do, it’ll be separate lists for games, movies, ect), I will at least provide a list of Princesses that I personally enjoy. As usual, keep in mind that this is based on my personal fondness of the characters, so if there’s someone you wanted to see on the list but hasn’t made it, chances are I either don’t like them or aren’t familiar of them (most likely the latter).

Ground rules first. As long as a person has been a princess at least some point in their life, then it counts. I’m also going to disregard my rule of only picking one particular princess from each franchise (don’t get used to it).

I’m also going to judge each character based on how I personally see them as decent Princesses as well as being an overall likable character, so this is your spoiler warning.

Finally, no Disney Princesses (including Kairi from Kingdom Hearts). That’s too easy. Sorry Jasmine. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

Morrigan Aesland (Darkstalkers). Some of you are probably thinking “Wait, Morrigan’s not a princess.” Oh, yes she is! Or, well...she WAS. She was adopted by Belial, the previous ruler of the Makai Realm and she became the ruler herself after his death, which is the reason why Demitri has a power feud with her. That’s right, unlike Prier from La Pucelle, Morrigan’s an ACTUAL Succubus Overlord. Still, I can only put her as high as #10 for this list. While I do like the fact that she’s flirty, fun, and outgoing coughandbisexualcough, it doesn’t change the fact the often spends her time avoiding her duties, usually by traveling to the human world and either cosplay or attract some people, or both. Don’t get me wrong, it makes sense considering that she’s...well...a succubus, and I can understand wanting to take a break from a ruling position, but it’s clear that she doesn’t take her role all that seriously. While it has been hinted that might put more effort into it later on, we won’t know for sure until Capcom spines up and bring us another Darkstalkers game. Come on, you brought back Megaman and Devil May Cry, you can do it for Darkstalkers!

Arcueid Brunestud (Tsukihime). Yeah that’s right. My favorite vampire of all time is only #9 on this list. Like Morrigan, she’s fun, adventurous, and doesn’t like being bored all the time. The reason why I’m placing her higher up than Morrigan instead of making it a tie is because she does at least take saving the world seriously. She feels responsible for the vampire outbreak that’s been going on in the world and has helped train Shiki to be able to fight because she was at a weakened state and couldn’t take some of them on her own. In fact, she used to be serious and gloomy until she interacted with Shiki and started to really get to know the world she protecting, so you could make the argument that despite her carefree nature, she’s more dedicated than before..maybe.

Lady Bow (Mario). You guys might wanna take this with a grain of salt because I didn’t see any confirmation about whether or not her status counts as “princess”, but considering her lady-like personality and the fact that she IS the leader of the Boos (despite there being a King Boo in the Mario franchise), I’m going to count it. Out of all the party members in Paper Mario, she’s my personal favorite. Not only is she useful for stealth and avoiding a charged attack that might do a crud ton of damage, the fact that she can defeat Bowser just by slapping the shit out of him is just hilarious to me. Also despite her having the typical royalty-personality, she has proven that she’s not the leader of the mansion for nothing as not only did she organize some of the boo’s scare routines, but she can also put on a good scare herself. And when her loyal boos were being eaten up by a monster, she didn’t just send Mario to take care of things for her, she actually helps him out and goes with him to save Peach! I wish Nintendo would include her in more games.

Nina (Breath of Fire 4). Even though her older sister, Elena, is actually the one next in line for the throne (well at least she was until her death), Nina is still a decent princess of Wyndia to me. She’s kind, caring, and willing to put her life on the line for the sake of others. She doesn’t take her position into consideration when it came to most if all the decisions she made in the game. She’s a person that wants to help out just because she wants to help, that includes going on her journey to find her sister. She’s extremely worried about her and simply wants to see her again. I can see how this could be a problem in the long run if she inherits the throne, but for now, it’s a good trait to have.

Princess Sally Acorn (Sonic). Am I the only one that thinks Sally not being in Sonic Forces is a wasted opportunity, even if they rebooted the character for the games and kept her kinda separate from the TV show and comics? Granted there might be some licensing issues with Archie, but still. Anywho, the fact that Sally’s not only fighting to regain her kingdom and save Mobius, but also that’s the main driving force in it (at least in terms of the TV show), is pretty sweet. And it’s not just sitting back and coming up with the plans, she gets into the action herself. Heck there are times when she gets upset when Sonic heads off and tries to handle something on his own.

A little detail that a certain someone should take note of, but I digress.

5.

Rozalin (Disgaea). While she is one of those more stuck up princesses, Rozalin does at least have the wisdom to back herself up. Being isolated in a castle for so many years gives her plenty of time to read textbooks that helps at least teach what goes on in the world (including how video games work apparently) and has shown that she’s kind enough to do things for others just because she wants to like when she helped save Taro and Hanako. I also like the fact that while she is willing to put in work, if there’s a way to put in less effort and still get results, she’ll take it, like how she got her job in Disgaea 4.

Sonia Blanche (Shining Resonance). I just finished playing Shining Resonance and I gotta say, I really like all of the characters in it, both heroes and villains. One of my favorites has to be Sonia, Princess of Marga. Not only is she a tomboy with a luxurious taste in clothing (which is kind of rare to see), she’s also constantly preparing herself to take over the throne one day because she genuinely loves the people of Marga. She tends to the needs of everyone as much as she can, going as far as to memorize the names of every citizen in it, even the troops. Also she has a saiyan appetite. No seriously. That has nothing to do with her being a princess, I just find that fun to point out.

Princess Kitana (Mortal Kombat). I haven’t played the rebooted series (well, I did play 9, but not its story mode), so I’m just going by how things were pre-time warp. Kitana is one of those characters who’s the very definition of “beautiful and deadly”. Even after finding out that she’s the Princess of Edenia instead of Outworld, she still makes sure to take care of Outworld affairs like making a treaty with Goro. Not to mention once she did get Edenia back, she made sure to help rebuild it, because let’s face it, there’s a pretty good chance there was a lot of damage left after Shao Kahn took over. And now it’s gone...again, because Raiden reversed time after Armageddon...I really hate Deadly Alliance.

2.

Sapphire Rhodonite (Disgaea). Now here’s someone who’s the textbook definition of “Tomboy”. While she is beautiful, unlike with Kitana, she’s mostly deadly. We’re talking about a girl who goes around on her own and kills villains and overlords just because she doesn’t want to wait around to get kidnapped. If you think about it, it helps the Kingdom in the long run as they don’t have to worry about going into war. The king would already be dead before the battle starts. Even if by some chance she does end up getting kidnapped, she has the strength to free herself from any trap, especially if she sees her husband Almaz in trouble, because she refuses to let him die. I think every princess should take some notes from her.

Pfft! Yeah right. I do like her, but she needs to raise the bar. No, the actual #1 slot is...

Excela Noa Aura (Shining Resonance). Yeah, while Sonia is one of my favorite characters in the game, Excela is THE favorite. You know you’re up for greatness if you’ve been fighting in a war commanding dragons since you were a little kid. Excela is pretty much a tragic villain. Like Sonia, she cares about her people and is kind enough to hear their plights. It’s clear that neither of them really want the war. The only reason it started is because of a power struggle between the noble families looking to take over the empire, and Excela’s lineage hasn’t really been looking very favorably. Despite all the hardships she goes though, she’s willing to take action if it means for the good of the Empire. If there’s a chance that things can be resolved without bloodshed, she’ll take it. She’s by no means cruel. Quite the opposite in fact, She’s very sympathetic. And even after her father dies, her best friend dies, and being branded a traitor, she doesn’t let the hardships get to her and remains focus for the good of everyone. And when all is said and done, she spends time to atone for the mistakes that’s been made by the war like helping rebuild destroyed villages. If there’s any Princess whose side I’d fight by, it’s hers.))

Ann was never truly a fan of such, so for banquets she was hostess of, the Crown Princess left every seat free; leaving it to the guest to decide where they wished to sit.

Lengthy, asinine rambling over an old, formative story ahead. :p

I remember a long time back, somewhere around 17 years ago, I was helping a friend of the family with some moving, and in the process we found a box of Nintendo Power magazines from a couple years prior. I was always THE gamer dude in town and so, seeing my eyes light up at the sight, he gave the box to me. One of the newer issues in the assortment featured a detailed beginners guide to Breath of Fire 2, and as I was a huge fan of the first game (which I had only fairly recently gotten to play, actually), I was super eager to look it over. I hurriedly flipped to the first page of the guide and was greeted by the first image accompanying this post and my eyes were glued. Why? Well, I was a teenage boy with no internet or really any other readily available outlet for teenage boyness soooo the sight of Katt, a red-headed female wearing a low-cut bustier and literally no bottoms was… It was everything!! Best thing I could have possibly hoped for!! Boobs, boobs, boobs! Yay! No pants, no pants, no pants! YAY! *ugh* But yeah, that was indeed the case -at very first glance-… and then I looked leftward and saw Nina.

I think at first I couldn’t even register what my eyes were seeing because I seriously just sat there staring blankly, unfeelingly. I stared, and did not know what else to do but -keep- staring. I thought, “Um, but SHE is fully dressed? She’s fully (and quite elegantly) dressed. No cleavage. No pantlessness. No ludeness. All I can see is just some dumb leg? That’s… That’s not interesting, right, filthy pubescent me? Boobiezz are all that matters, right!? All she has is legs. Just really… really… great legs… and she’s… she’s…”

“Oh my fucking god, she is GORGEOUS. WHAT THE HELL AM I LOOKING AT!?”

It would not be until quite a long time after this that my #1 pass-time activity was no longer just idling around, listening to Master of Puppets (album) on repeat while wistfully gazing at Nina in that picture, like I was studying it to unlock some only just out of reach truth of the universe itself. When I eventually left my parents house under fairly unfavorable circumstances five or so years later, that one issue of Nintendo Power with this one drawing of Nina was one of the very few things that I took with me.

So if it is the case that I’m strong on the waifu-loving weeb-trash side (and I proudly admit it is), it’s because of Nina Wyndia. If I’m a “leg guy” (and I proudly am), it’s because of Nina Wyndia. If I were asked “who is your all-time biggest fictional crush?”, the only answer I could realistically give after nearly 20 years of STILL being a constant in my search history– is Nina Wyndia.

(Helps that she fits my play style to a T too. I HATE using expendable items in any game, so a character who can replenish her own MP on command when you don’t need her nuking stuff and can be taught a healing spell early in the game is my absolute friggin’ JAM.)

And of course you too, dear. Tea or coco?"
