Packaging-free store Kabas receives climate subsidy

Two projects in the North-Belgian city of Mechelen receive each a climate subsidy of 5000 euros from the city. It concerns the neighbourhood garden 'Noaze'[1] in the district of Muizen and the 'Packaging-free life' campaign by Kabas. The subsidy was created to support committed people of Mechelen who have a clear plan to make the city more climate-friendly, or to prepare the urban community for the consequences of climate change.

“The subsidy of up to 5000 euros and the guidance from the city have proven to be crucial to turn a good idea into a good project in many cases. It is not only the projects themselves that are important: we encourage mutual contacts between the projects and the direct and indirect involvement of many people of Mechelen has a sensitizing effect on the entire city," says Marina De Bie, Alderman of Climate at the City.

Kabas[2], the packaging-free shop in Mechelen, will also receive a subsidy for the 'Packaging-free life' project. The main aim is to conduct an awareness campaign targeting both young people by visiting the store, and the urban community by organizing workshops with specific tips to reduce their ecological footprint. The common thread running through this campaign is to encourage a low-waste or waste-free lifestyle.

According to alderman De Bie, working on a low-waste lifestyle fits in well with the city's ambitions to stimulate the circular economy. “We are not only working on reducing the amount of waste, but also on reusing waste as a raw material for something else and encouraging 'sharing' as the new 'acquiring'. This principle is interwoven in the actions within the city's climate plan and in the ambitions of the city’s spearhead stimulating entrepreneurship. Supporting circular initiatives and raising awareness of circular consumption – such as the reuse of products, avoiding single-use packaging and repairing – is also part of the European CECI[3] project in which Mechelen is a partner. From these different angles and with the support of committed citizens, circularity and the circular economy are becoming increasingly evident.”
