RIIL Credit Union Basketball Championships Press Conference set for March 15 at the Ryan Center

The RIIL Credit Union Basketball Championships Press Conference will be held Friday, March 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ryan Center.

The eight teams that have qualified for the Final Four of this weekend’s Rhode Island Interscholastic League Girls and Boys Basketball State Tournaments will be in attendance, along with members of the Shea High School and Tolman High School unified basketball teams that will be playing an exhibition game in between the state final games on Sunday, March 17.

The Top 12 teams in the Power Rankings after the RIIL Divisional Playoff Tournaments were completed qualified for the State Tournament. In addition, any division tournament champion not previously in the top-12 received automatic bids. The teams that have advanced to the girls semifinals include Barrington High School (#1 seed), North Kingstown High School (#2), Moses Brown (#3) and St. Mary Academy - Bay View (#5). The boys semifinalists include: Classical (#1 seed), Barrington High School (#2), La Salle Academy (#3) and Lincoln High School (#4).

Also in attendance Friday will be representatives from the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, now in their 34th year serving as presenting sponsor of the RIIL Basketball Championships.

Tickets for the RIIL Credit Union Basketball Championships are $10 for adults, $8 for youth and high school students and are available at the Ryan Center Box Office and online at uritix.evenue.net. Visit www.theryancenter.com or www.riil.org for more information.

A life size Lisa Simpson for $1900 in north Kingstown, RI

Deep in the woods of Kingstown, Rhode Island, is a witchy house. It’s estimated worth is $341,427, yet it was originally listed at $500K. It is off the market and is unclear if it was sold- usually it would say it was, but it just says “Public Record- Not for Sale.” Take a look. 

Custom built in 1950, it’s called “The Gingerbread House.” 

It appears to have a garage around the back.

There’s a tiny cottage on the property, also.

Plus another garage.

The odd thing is that they don’t show anything but the upper part of the rooms, which makes one wonder, what is down on the floor that they’re hiding?

This looks like a catwalk. I’m not a builder, but I think that piece of wood should be a little thicker.

This looks nice w/the brick accents and a balcony.

This hall looks like it was repaired or damaged in some way, but this is the biggest glimpse of the rooms they give. 

Here, the catwalk leads to double doors and a small terrace. 

Check out the heart-shaped tub in front of the window.

The beams look like composites of smaller strips of wood.

The property needs a good clean-up. I don’t know what to make of this house. It looks so interesting, but why don’t they show the rooms?

In The Cut por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: Some friends and railroaders gathered in the pouring rain for a little private photo charter on Rhode Island's own little railroad, the Seaview Transportation Company. The little Seaview Transportation Company doesn't have much in the way of scenery or geographic features along its 7 miles of 'mainline' across the Quonset Business Park on the east shore of Narragansett Bay. About the only spot of note is this deep cut through Devil's Foot Rock just west of the US Route 1 overpass at about MP 1.5 where the two legs of the railroad split to the waterfront in Quonset and Davisville respectively. The road's primary locomotive had been hand washed only a few days prior by the road's new VP (and me!) and hasn't looked this good in years. The rain really saturated the fall leaves and the vibrant blue making for a better scene than we expected. SVTX GP10 1855 was built as a GP9 in Aug. 1956 for the Baltimore and Ohio as their #6467. Later rebuilt by ICG's Paducah Shop she bounced around on different shortlines until coming to Rhode Island in 2006 where she was given this snappy paint job. 11th annual RIIL Awards Breakfast slated for May 10

April 20, 2023

     WARWICK, RI - The Rhode Island Interscholastic League will honor 21 individuals, including 16 student-athletes, for their exemplary achievements over the past year at its 11th annual RIIL Awards Breakfast, to be held Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 9-11:15 a.m. at Valley Country Club in Warwick (Registration from 8:30-9 a.m.).

10th October 1918 - Ireland. The Sinking of the RMS Leinster.

Shortly before 9 a.m. the R.M.S Leinster left Carlisle Pier, Kingstown bound for Holyhead. On board were 771 passengers and crew. In command was Captain William Birch, a 61 year old Dubliner who had settled with his family in Holyhead. The Leinster had a crew of 77. Also on board were 22 postal sorters from Dublin Post Office, working in the ship's onboard postal sorting room. There were 180 civilian passengers and 491 military personnel, many of them going on, or returning from, leave. The passengers came from Ireland, Britain, Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

An hour into the voyage and about 16 miles from Kingstown, people on deck spotted a torpedo track in the water. The torpedo, fired by a German submarine, UB-123, missed the ship, and passed in front of the bow. Minutes later a second torpedo hit the Leinster on the port side where the postal sorting room was located. All but one sorter died in the blast or drowned in the flooding sorting room. The survivor was named John Higgins who survived by clinging on to electrical cables while allowing the rising water carry him up to a trapdoor in the ceiling.

Meanwhile the ship turned through 180 degrees in an attempt to return to port while at the same time beginning to launch the lifeboats. At this point a third torpedo hit her in the starboard side and the Leinster sank a few minutes later. Officially 501 people died in the sinking, but modern research sets the figure between 529 and 564 casualties.

The sinking of the RMS Leinster led to the greatest ever loss of life in the Irish Sea. Amongst the casualties were Captain Birch and 36 of his crew. Two of the Leinster's three Royal Navy gunners died. 115 civilians lost their lives, including almost all of the members of the Gould family from Limerick. May Gould was travelling with her five children to join her husband, who was working in a munitions factory in England. One daughter survived the tragedy. Amongst the military casualties was 19 year old Clerk, Josephine Carr from Cork, who became the first member of the Women's Royal Naval Service to die on active service. Her body was not recovered and she is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

UB-123, commanded by Oberleutnant Robert Ramm, hit a mine in the North Sea on 18 October while returning to Germany. She sank with the loss of the entire crew of 35 men.

The members of the Royal Irish Regiment commemorated on this date in 1918, all died in the sinking. Another connection to the Royal Irish Regiment was one of the civilian casualties, Fanny Wookey. Her son, Second Lieutenant Frederick Maurice Wookey, died of wounds in France on 19th March 1915, while serving with the Regiment. Her husband had died in July and Mrs Wookey, having sold the business and the family home, was planning to live in England.
